"Well, if we're about to be ambushed by that abomination again, I'd rather know about it in advance," Alexander says. "I'm going to slip over to the bannister and see if I can't spot it before it spots me..."
OOC:
I'd like to attempt a Guile check. I have two ranks in that. Do I roll 2d6? Or is it 1d6 and roll the second if I'm willing to risk something?
Jan 20, 2023 10:01 pm
OOC:
so you can choose to roll up to 3 dice. The number of dice you roll matches the effort you put on the action: greater effort = more likely to succeed.

However, of you roll a double, you pushed too far and get exhausted (loose one die) or, in the case of 3d6 which is a supernatural effort, also get further consumed by your curse (gain a new mark).

A key point is that the dice you roll don’t need to match the action. It could be 3 of anything you have to roll. The only difference is if they match, the 6 counts as "critical" basically.
Because all actions are about avoiding risks and getting rewards, I asked the players to try to tell me what they want to achieve with the action and how they may mess up. Then I set the risks and rewards and you decide what to roll

OOC:
Got it, thanks! In this case, the reward would be finding out who is making all the noise downstairs. The risk is being spotted, but if that's not specific enough, the risk is that being spotted skulking about will likely draw allegations that Alexander had something to do with Roderick's' petrification.

OOC:
Sounds good. This means that each success can be used to either avoid being seen (risk) or identifying the source of the noise (reward).

OOC:
If I can roll any stat I want -- I seem to have Brawl 3 and Guile 2 and Weird 0. But I'll roll Guile, as that makes most sense to me.
OOC:
Looks like I can either see who's down there or avoid being detected? I want to know who's down there, which I would have seen anyway had I not rolled, I presume? Unless you're suggesting that this noise-maker is trying to be stealthy?

Rolls

Guile to see who's down there - (1d6, 1d6)

1d6 : (5) = 5

1d6 : (3) = 3

OOC:
So the way it stands, you can either see who it is and be seen, or you can go unnoticed but took just a second too long and only get a glimpse of who it is as they move into a different room. That's sort of out I interpret the results here :D

OOC:
I guess I'll be seen, then.

Alexander tries quietly slip over to the bannister to look to the ground floor. He immediately checks the half-open front door is damaged from the strong impact that slammed it. He quickly scans the entrance hall for anyone. As Alexander does so, he notices one of the paintings has forcefully been taken down from the wall. As he tries to look a bit closer, he feels a chill down his spine. The temperature suddenly cools down around him, as if a supernatural force suddenly materialized next to him. He looks around and sees Elias returning to the hall, sword in hand. The soldier looks straight at his cousin and mutters something in an incomprehensible tongue.

Alexander shudders and tries to speak. "Hail, cousin! What's the good... word?"

As soon as Alexander greets his cousin it looks like he disappears.Taken by surprise, he closes his eyes and looks at where his cousin was only to find him still there! Elias continues talking strangely but the words become more understandable as he continues. "You mother. The library! We need to find the library." He rushes up the stairs and then suddenly stops as the crazed look fades from his face. "We don't have much time. Claire is going to kill us!"
OOC:
Just so you can follow OOC, Elias got The Curse of the Speech from the ghost ball. He basically sees and talks to ghosts... and he is loosing it.

As a reminder, since savagebob joined later, Alexander's mother killed herself in the sanitarium she was sent to after going mad

Alexander flits up the stairs behind Elias. The library? That's where Alexander found that shard so long ago... the shard that seems to match the strange pagan statue... "Elias, wait! Nathaniel is up there, as well." Alexander speaks loudly enough that Claire and Nathaniel should be able to hear him. "Claire, though—you'll have to find her if you want to confront her with that sword, dear cousin. She seems to have disappeared."
OOC:
Trying to warn Claire to make herself scarce here without Elias catching on. Let me know if a roll's required.
Jan 30, 2023 6:27 pm
Nathaniel looks to Claire "That sounds more like a warning for us."
OOC:
is there anything I can use to try and trap or tie up Elias?
Jan 30, 2023 6:35 pm
"I'm not going to hide again!" Claire hisses at Nathaniel. "I'm not risking that you all forget me again!"

Elias looks Confused at Alexander "Where is grandfather?"
Feb 4, 2023 2:14 am
Alexander squints at his cousin. Is he in his right mind? Best not to tell him Claire and Nathaniel are up here—let alone that Grandfather is now a statue. "I suppose Grandfather's in his chambers. Shall we go check in on him?"

"Well. That's technically true. Nathaniel whispers.

Deciding that she's had enough of hiding, Claire walks out into view of Elias. "You're looking for me?" she asks him.

Elias nods as Alexander tells him where to find Roderick. "That is strange, I would expect grandfather to be up before the sun." he as he puts is hand on his cousin's shoulder "He must know where the library is."

Before he can make his way to Roderick's room, Claire walks into the hall. Elias looks at the teenager and stops for a moment. Then he smiles warmly. "Ah sister! There you are! How was your early night yesterday?"
OOC:
I don't have Elias' original sheet but he's skeleton had something to do with being overprotective of Claire so this may get weird :D

"Oh, I was attacked by some creature in the graveyard and then my whole family forgot I was even there," she says. "So, you know, the usual."

She then looks him over. "Where were you?"

"You were attacked?" Elias tries to remember Claire being in the graveyard. He turns to the side and whispers something to himself, nods, stops to consider it for a moment, and then turns back to Claire. "It would have been safer with him" he says turning to Alexander "There is still time, if you find that damned library Grandfather has been hiding from us!"
OOC:
Nathaniel is still "hiding" right?
