Scene 3: The Ceremony

Claire moves closer to the window, somehow attracted by the strange bird and it's apparent obsession. As she does so, she catches a glimpse of the Caretaker returning to the Manor from the graveyard at a hurried pace. Nathaniel, on the other hand, distractedly browses his grandfather's papers on the desk.

"It's Gunther the Caretaker!" Claire announces. "He's outside and just returning to the mansion. It looks like he was in the graveyard."

I'll blame it on joining later and having to catch up 😁

OOC:
Sorry, y'all. Been sick. :( Do we know the caretaker's name? I'd like to open the window and call out to him.

OOC:
been known as the caretaker since the beginning of the game 😁 but I haven’t named a single thing for creepiness reasons 🀣

Alex throws open the window. "You down there! A word, please?"

The Caretaker
The Caretaker looks up surprised and shouts something unintelligible as he waves his hands. Alexander gets the feeling that the man means to come up to meet them... or maybe they should go down. It's not clear at that distance, but the Caretaker looks distressed.
OOC:
If you leave the room without exploring any more, give me a guile roll for noticing stuff passively. risk: nothing to see here. reward1: you notice something as you leave. reward2: you notice something important as you leave xD
Mar 13, 2023 8:23 pm
Alexander thinks about yelling at the caretaker that he works for them, but stops himself. He looks to the others. "So, shall we speak to the man downstairs? Or perhaps check out the library my cousin was so on about?"
OOC:
I think either approach might work. Or the raven? I feel like we've got lots of leads but no real clues yet. Maybe we just need to pick one lead (library, caretaker, raven) and ride it out as far as it will go.)
Mar 13, 2023 8:41 pm
"Let's talk to him first and see what he wants to tell us. We can always still take a look at the library afterwards," Claire suggests.
Mar 13, 2023 8:55 pm
Nathaniel is looking over the Old Man's notes with fascination. 'Why does he have any of this?' He stops and looks up when he realizes the others are talking . . "Oh, yes, uh, let's go see what he has to say." he packs up and puts away the notes, trying to save his place to he can continue later.

The Caretaker

You all go down and meet the Caretaker by the main entrance. He looks very stress about something "Have you seen master Roderick? Is he alright?" he asks immediately "Something happened in town and ... I fear master Roderick may nor be with us any longer "
Mar 14, 2023 5:57 pm
"Something did happen to him," Claire replies. She does not feel like explaining the unbelievable event to the caretaker. "And your suspicion is correct. But what happened in town to make you think that?"

The Caretaker
"In town?" The caretaker asks himself. "Oh yes, that one doesn't look good at all. Oh no it does not, I tell you. Worse in a very long time for the Rookwoods." He starts with a dire tone, casually dropping the actual news "The Knights of the Sacred Congregation, they are burning the Tarhallows' girl. Witchcraft apparently."
OOC:
Introducing Dr_B risk now :D
He looks around the Manor, taking in the Estate before explaining the problem. "It seems she has been talking with Gunther and someone saw master Roderick with some suspicious women in the graveyard... of all places! Doesn't look good at all. Not good to have the Knights digging around. Not good at all, not at a time like this."

The Caretaker looks at Claire for a moment after saying that. He looks at the portraits around the entrance, taking a longer look at one particular painting of a family woman "Did the master's time already arrive? I found Gunther inanimate and I suspected as much". To Claire's surprise, not only he seems to be expecting the unbelievable, he also mentions something may have simultaneous happened to Gunther, Roderick's old and loyal servant.
OOC:
That would be the Waitress

Nathaniel says to the caretaker "You seem, uhm exceptionally calm considering the news. Also, what has become of Gunther?"

The Caretaker
"Well, the Tarhallows' is a sweet girl, but it's not my business. I asked master Elias to go into town and try to manage that problem. His good standing with the King's military might prove useful" The man's attitude has always been a bit disquieting, but given the news, you just can't shake the feeling that something very wrong is going on.

"Oh Gunther? Poor man. Found him collapsed inside that grave he was trying to fill again. However ..." his voice suddenly becomes so serious, it almost feels like an echo in endless darkness "... if master Roderick is not here with us, then he can't lead the family. One of you must take up the mantle. Today."

"What? Why?" Claire asks. "I mean, I guess at some point someone will have to step up and get the family's affairs in order, but it doesn't have to be today. There's time for a mourning period."
Mar 22, 2023 7:21 pm
Alexander nods. "Yes, let's not get histrionic, good man. Although there's been enough weirdness today that I wouldn't be surprised if you told us the house will eat us if we don't declare a successor this instant." He smiles at the joke, then swallows the grin. "The house isn't going to eat us, is it?"
