The Pitch: A "What If?" style game that is thematically similar to Civil War and Days of Future Past. An alternate future where a rising tide of authoritarianism led to a take-over of half the countries by mutant dictators. Many dissidents were captured or killed and only pockets of freedom fighters remain. The exact details will be collaboratively decided among all players and GM. We will be ignoring the usual labels of "heroes" and "villains". Anyone who supports the facist and authoritatian regimes in power are the villains, while any members of the resistance are the heroes. So in short, Iron Man could be a villain while Magneto and Punisher could be heroes.

Characters: This will be a low-powered, alternate Earth-focused game. No cosmic beings, no reality-warping powers, dimension hopping, or anything similar. Think of this as the Rogue One of Marvel games. I am looking for mostly existing B- and C-list heroes (with some exceptions, no custom heroes) that have a unique power that would be helpful to a freedom fighting unit. I'll be pretty strict on character selection so please have two or three ideas in mind if you aren't sure your first choice will fit.

The Politics: The game will explore themes of politics and power, with a bias favoring left-wing politics. This doesn't have to be your personal beliefs as long as you can engage with the ideas through your character.

Timeframe: Looking to start mid-January, giving a week or two for recruitment, character creation, and world building. The exact timeframe depends on how fast this part is done. I don't have an endgoal in mine, as the idea is to have episodic sessions where you make progress reclaiming territories little by little, freeing prisoners, assassinating dictators, etc., with an overarching story describing the changes you have made based on past missions.

Who: I have 2 players already committed so I'm looking for 2-3 more. Pitch 1-2 characters you'd think would work well with the game described above. I'll be pick based on the characters pitched, and the player if I have previous experience with you. If you're interested, post your pitches below! Thanks for reading.

I don't know the system, but it sounds fun to play superheroes.

First choice
[ +- ] Kitty Pryde aka Shadowcat
Back up
[ +- ] Kate Bishop

I also don’t know the system, but I’d be up for trying it. I like the idea of using a street level hero, Daredevil being my first choice (although if he’s too A-level, Jessica Jones would be my second)

Can I do Madrox again? Pretty please?

I would also be new to the system, but one of my New Year's resolutions is to try some new game systems and genres. As it happens, I've never played a superhero RP game either, so I'll toss my hat in the ring.

An array of characters I would have fun playing: Nightcrawler, Magik, Ant-Man, Hawkeye, Cypher

Magik is arguably too powerful to make the cut, but a version of her that never mastered Limbo, or lost control of it, and has more limitations to her teleportation powers could be fun and useful for freedom fighters getting around.

The version of Cypher I'd be interested in playing is one that mastered the ability to communicate in computer code and can 'talk' to computers/tech - I'd play him like a gadgeteer/hacker, someone that helps keep enemies from tracking the group quickly and gets past security systems, etc. Plus, being able to translate/speak to anyone around the world could be helpful if we seek help/shelter in foreign places.

Cyclops
https://i.imgur.com/zl0wfwL.jpg
Joining the guerrilla outfit as a result of the murder of Jean Grey early in the take-over, Cyclops brings his ‘heavy weaponry’ to bear on hostile forces!

Beast
https://i.imgur.com/AVfXc7j.jpg
Always striving to build a better world for mutants and humans, Beast joins the resistance. He brings his brains and brawns to bear against the forces arrayed against him.

Jubilee

Forced to action by the capture or killing of her father-figure, Wolverine, Jubilee joins the resistance. She’s the side-kick, the smart mouth, the scrappy adversary that gets overlooked!

I love this system so much, I really want to play... BUT... people new to the system should really get first crack.

I guess I'll say this... slot me in as an alternate, and let me know if/when you lose any players?

Completely Unfamiliar With the system but as I've been watching lots of Marvel Movies recently, I'd like to pitch myself a character.

Meet Snipe

Snipe Spent many years mastering all guns the Military had to offer given it all and spoiled to the highest level he loved to run into top secret projects areas and use whatever weaponry or other tech they had developed, at first he was lucky whenever tech that was to dangerous was developed he didn't hear about it in time. But then one day his father decided to show him a gun they were devolving which would completely change the warfare for everyone (meaning they would have what they needed to win every time) not waiting for his father's whole explanation he took ahold of the weapon aimed it, unknowingly at the very thing which powered the weapon and fired...

From There you could say everything went downhill the hand in which he held the gun shattered into thousands of pieces as did the gun except for the scope which he'd taken of in favour of shooting without tools used only by those afraid to miss.

Snipe's Father Erased all records of his son ever existing and sent him away only taking the time to replace his shattered hand with a barely functional mechanical one.

This is where Snipe began to change the once Spoiled Brat realized what life was like for everyone else once he had to live it himself. Then His Father made a big Mistake the last straw for Snipe, he brought some random kid of the street who pretended to be his Son. His father never cared for him just the Image that having his son join that war effort would do for his people that was when Snipe Decided to Rebel he found himself an old design from a gun from forever ago and began building making minor modifications wherever he knew a better way to make something work then he attached this gun to his hand in a way which he could best make use of it. He also took the mechanical aimer from the secret project attached it to just above his eye to allow him to aim after all much of his skill was lost from the loss of his hand and then he Vowed that he would never stop fighting until he saw his father removed from power.

Disclaimer: I don't have an Image because I couldn't figure out how to get one of a Character that didn't already exist.

@KoldikSteelskin

So, the gist I got is that nezz intends for us to play existing characters.

That said, I do love some character creation in this system (although it can have even worse "roller's remorse" than D&D, by far).

As for creating your own character... unless nezz allows for some form of character modelling, the standard creation method is random. You don't pick a concept and then build it -- you roll your race, stats, talents, powers, etc., and then work to make something cohesive out of your jumbled mess of scores and abilities.

Most games (especially more modern ones) don't work that way, but honestly it's one of the things I like most about the system.

Edit: It's also why a lot of GMs just want players to run existing Marvel characters.

Sorry if it was unclear, the game is for existing heroes only. I added some wording to my original post to make it clearer.

I'll leave recruitment up until Saturday and send out invites over the weekend.

No Worries, At least I enjoyed creating a character but I don't think I'm familiar with or Interested in playing a character created by Marvel or anyone else for that matter so I'll give the space to another.

Would Spider-Man be too A-list to be considered? If so, could I try my luck with Punisher, or even Bug.

Dragonling says:

Kitty Pryde aka Shadowcat.

Shadowcat is good. This will be a little in the future so she'd be more of a woman than a teen. No to the other one who I don't really know.

Daredevil would be a great fit.

A+ for Multiple Man

Nightcrawler is always a yes. Magik definitely not lol. No idea who Cypher is but I'm not imagining a high-tech world, more like 1984 but set in the 90s. Ant-Man could be ok, not a fan of Hawkeye as he's not really a mutant and kinda boring.
KCC says:
Cyclops
Beast

Jubilee
Yes to Beast or Cyclops, maybe for Jubilee. I like her as a character, but I don't think her powers will be useful at all.

Might as well pitch a character idea or two as that is what I'm mostly selecting by.
WhtKnt says:

Spider-Man would be ok, especially a Venom-suited one. Punisher would fit great if played well (i.e. not a complete murdering sociopath). No to Bug.

I'll update my list to include one more possibility -

Nightcrawler, Ant Man, Gambit
Jan 4, 2023 6:02 pm
Cypher was a New Mutant. I know he was dead for a long time, not sure about current comics. The X-Men can now pretty much resurrect any mutant. Anywho... his powers are that he understands and can communicate in all languages. Spoken, written, alien, computer, even body language and microexpressions.

That's... pretty much it though.

Alright, as for pitching a character or two...

I think my first pick would be Ghost. He might be too obscure, but I think he'd fit the setting amazingly well... and he has a pretty cool power set. (Also... not related to mutants. A little diversity in the ranks. Lol)

If you want more mutants... Mimic would probably be my pick. Ideally, more of the EXiles version, but I digress.

I guess I may as well throw out a longshot character while I'm at it. Silver Surfer was unable to leave Earth's atmosphere for years, and he would have absolutely gotten involved in something of this scale.
Jan 4, 2023 7:20 pm
Just saw this, and thought I’d throw some characters in! Hopefully get to be DM’ed by you again, Nezzeraj!

Black Panther - maybe he was somehow overthrown and wants to take Wakanda back?

Iron Fist - cause why not? :)

I know this is supposed to be lower-powered, but just thought I’d toss in Robbie Reyes’ Ghost Rider. He’s a pretty cool character and it would be awesome to roleplay him!

Thanks again!

Adult Shadowcat is fine. More appropiate for fighting games anyways.

And well, if you are not a fan of Hawkeye you wouldn't be a fan of Kate Bishop either I guess.
But that's ok. Shadowcat was by far my first choice anyway.

There was a time Hawkeye was using Pym Particles. (EDIT: He used the moniker Goliath during that time, and ditched the bow iirc, but my idea is funnier. Lol)

Hawkeye using a bow to fire telephone poles at bad guys sounds hilarious. 😂

Yeah, it would take some creative licensing to make Cypher play well. That was my thought with pushing the computer-speak a bit, but doesn't really work if there isn't much technology left to speak with.

There really are so many neat characters in Marvel comics. Blade would probably be fun in this setting, too.

OK I selected a group based on character ideas and a mix of players I know and some I don't know so well (or at all lol). I've sent invites to @Dragonling @HeavyDuty03 @KCC @Sassafrass and @WhtKnt. Thanks for everyone who showed interest. If this goes well I'll likely run another and select those who didn't get selected this time.
