[RECRUITMENT] 5e candlekeep mysteries

Be sure to read and follow the guidelines for our forums.

ClosedDungeons & Dragons 5thPrivate5 / weekGreyWord
Game System DnD 5e scenario based on published book Candlekeep Mysteries that contains 17 short stories. Will start with with first story in the book, but will probably skip some stories (to be decided together with players once we finish first story)

Settings: Forgotten Realms
Genre/theme: each story has it's own genre/theme. First story will be Mystery/exploration

Hook: The characters have come to Candlekeep seeking aid for a stricken town, which could be the home of one or more of them. The settlement has withered this year. Crops have failed, the livestock stands in the fields like stick figures, and the rain has dwindled. A local mage determined that a curse had been levied on the land and recommended that the town seek aid from a sage named Matreous. After some inquiries, the mage found that Matreous was studying in Candlekeep and sent the characters to find him.

Game Duration I'm looking to finish first 3 stories from the book in 6-12 months depending on player activity, but ready to continue with more stories if players are interested.

Post Frequency Post frequency to be defined during recruitment, 5 posts per week would be best. But once we have agreed on frequency I'll keep to it

Player experience I welcome any level of experience and I believe the book will allow everyone to have fun despite of their experience 5e experience

I'm ready to hire up to 10 players. If more than 6 will apply - will split in two groups
First come first serve. @NameAsh, @Sassafras, @Pitrio, @ctme2000, @GeneCortess has priority as already shown interest

How to apply: Just post here which of the following peace enforcement methods are OK with you
Out of combat: story get progress if more than half players posted and 24h passed since last story post
Out of combat: story get progress when any player post his player action
DM roll on behalf of players out of combat if player fail to post in 24H
DM roll on behalf of players out of combat all d20 rolls requested by DM (initiative, saving throws, ability checks)
Combat: side-based, i.e. all players post in any order
Combat: 24h deadline - if player do not post within 24H DM will do turn on behalf of player
Other: please specify

Awesome. I generally would defer to the DM when it comes to progress. I think the combat rules seem sensible, they're more or less the same rules I use. Out of combat I think you should just go with your gut in terms of how fast you progress the story. Personally I like to have a little bit of agency when it comes to rolls, which might seem silly considering the fact that it's all the same digital die roll, regardless if you make it or I do. Group checks and initiatives I would prefer if you roll, but I like to make my own ability checks/saving throws if possible. If there's a consensus from the rest that it's easier if you do everything, then that's okay, but it's just my preference.

I'm rather interested in Candlekeep Mysteries and Greyward is a good GM.

I'm interested as well and I do not have a problem with any of those methods.

This all looks good to me, I'm interested in the 24h pacing rules and the DM taking over when time lapses. I'd be ok if the DM made all the rolls and players just narrated what they wanted to do. Old school OD&D, when the DM was the only one rolling dice.

Hello! Do you think it would be possible to join this game when/if you move on to later stories (lvl 6+)? I have a pre-existing character who was in some of Candlekeep Mysteries stories and I wanted to continue playing him in the same set of adventures. I realize that joining later is probably not very team-building-friendly, but I am okay just being a backup if you need a player later.

I can also restart him at level 1 to join right now, if first way is not an option at all - I just want to play this character, I'm not too concerned with levels. (The only thing that scares me is recalculating the inventory. :'D)

Also, no problem with the game rules!

@FlyingSucculent you are certainly welcome to join later, assuming the game will still be active. I believe we should get to lvl 6+ around autumn. And I would recommend that If you know the first stories already - playing them wouldn't be as much fun.
P.S. Inventory isn't a problem. Just drop everything and start with your main class starting equipment.

Everyone: the rules I posted are the most aggressive practices I've seen other DMs using here. I just collected them all. I'm bit surprised there are no objections. I would actually like to soften them a bit and allow active players to roll their own rolls.

Neat, I'll keep an eye on it then! Or if other players don't mind, maybe I can observe? I'd love to cheer up from the sidelines, and it'd be easier to know when you get to higher levels.

PS: but my soap! I can't possibly go on an adventure without my soap (and a hundred other trinkets I tend to buy because shiny). XD

Moth? Moth was cool.

Nice to build up characters over time and levels. I like long hauls.

Yeah, him; and thanks! I want to get him to level 20 some of these days. :D

You and your moths...

I assumed the rules would only get used when there wasn't timely interaction. Those times when some of us get busy (the game needs to take a back seat for a few days) but keep moving the story a long. I expect that to be the exception and not the norm.
My comment about OD&D was tongue in cheek, that would be a DM nightmare trying to manage the game and everyone's character sheets.

But as a floor to the game, I am comfortable with it. It puts more onus on you as the DM, and as that I'll do what I can to keep to the 5/week (or whatever is decided) post count.

Heyhey! Yep I'm still on board and excited to see how it goes! :)

Regarding the rules:
With rolling I'm all for whatever is better for pacing and not waiting needlessly. I wouldn't want the group to wait for me to show up just to make a saving throw or alike, and I try to write in a way so my next actions should be easy to assume if dm agency is needed. When its convenient and obvious that a roll is needed then the player can just include that in their post so the dm has less workload i suppose.

With story progress, the half players posted and 24h passed seems reasonable to me.

Those are my thoughts, but I'm okay and adaptable whichever rules will get picked and used :) everything is acceptable.

Invites sent to everyone interested. And I still take applications until I end of the week or until I have 12 of them, because 2 teams of 6 is my cap. Let me know if you did apply but see no invite.

Have never tried candledeep mysteries before, but sounds like it could be good fun. I'm in! if you are still recruiting that is.
Jan 5, 2023 8:22 am
@Goldd yes I am still recruiting, but please read "How to apply" and do it properly.

Ye, @GreyWord is a pretty good GM and fun to play with. So you're most likely going to have fun!
Anyhow, i recently purchased the book, since it looked fun. Would love to hear your comments on the adventure! @GreyWord

I will express interest. Progression rules are fine with me, with the caveat that weekends and holidays may intervene. I generally believe that active players will communicate any foreseeable absences with the DM, and have seen that many will request that the DM roll for them due to said absence. Out of combat, I like having the DM roll for the player if it helps move the story along, though flexibility is key since I've seen players and DMs forget about some class features that directly impact the roll. I prefer side-based initiative in combat, but I also have no issues with true initiative order and DM taking the wheel after 24H.

Invite sent to CancerMan and I have 6 players now.
I do not close the recruitment, but anyone who want in may need to wait for either 4 players in total to make the second team.
