Discuss your characters

This space is for you to discuss your characters, mostly, character creation stuffs, ideas and concepts, etc.
Jan 20, 2023 5:20 pm
Is this a 3.5 sheet or 5e?
Jan 20, 2023 6:30 pm
Neither unfortunately. I'll get a blank template up that uses plain text.

Alright, whenever you're ready, we can begin character creation.

Sure! Shall I take a crack at it and then you help me fix whatever mistakes I (inevitably) make or would it be better to go through it together?

I’m going to be a disgruntled 42 year old history teacher and football coach.

Just go ahead and get started, it will show what rules I still need to put up here (which are a lot, I know)

As long as you can think of a reason that they'd be investigating and looking into weird occurrences, instead of leaving well enough alone, that sounds great!
Jan 21, 2023 12:10 am
Being a history teacher, his true passion is investigating colonial haunted houses.
Jan 21, 2023 12:25 am
I mean, there's only so many houses and lighthouses to investigate on a 28 square mile island...but I know what you're getting at.

People travel. Teachers get all summer off.

It's true
Jan 21, 2023 1:00 am
I had a fun idea for how Alfie could function in combat and I wanted to run it by you to make sure it’s okay. I’m thinking that, mechanically, he would make an attack roll as normal (maybe with psionics? Is that an attack skill?) but narratively it would be explained as the bad guys being inadvertently affected by the bad luck that Alfie brings with him everywhere he goes (e.g. a roof tile falls and hits the bad guy in the head, rather than Alfie attacking them directly). Would that work? What skill do you think would make the most sense to use for that?

Sounds more like a feat. Skill ranks should only represent the things the character has learned to do. Once I'm not at work, I'll see what feats would work for that.

Okay, great!

My apologies to everyone who's begun working on your characters, I forgot the Chemistry skill! I've added it in to the character sheet
Jan 21, 2023 3:30 am
And the Culinary skill. Sheesh!
Jan 21, 2023 3:35 am
And Criminality! What is happening? Why are these random skills that start with C no longer listed? It's so strange. Okay, I hope that's everything.
Jan 21, 2023 6:53 am
First, I somehow missed Stealth! Okay, I think I got all the skills.

BACKGROUNDS ARE COMPLETE! Occupations are SO much harder. I'm going to work on moving those over, but it'll be even easier if you can tell me which ones are the most interesting to you. I'll get a master list up now.
Jan 21, 2023 11:26 am
I'd like to bring in a character I've played before (not on GP), if you think he would fit the game.

He is a sea captain and the owner of a small (just one ship) deep dive/salvage/recovery company. He actually specialises in treasure hunting and jobs of dubious legality, because, well... criminals pay better than museums. Which makes him a bit of a criminal as well, and no stranger to violence and even murder. Some of his recent jobs have generated too much unwanted heat, so he has come to Motivation to lay low for a bit, and maybe find some small business to invest in for money laundering purposes.

Before getting his own ship, he used to work for another crew, smuggling treasures and artifacts, which he believes might have been magical and/or cursed. He is deeply superstitious, especially when it comes to matters of the sea, and has formed a belief in some deep-dwelling entity he just calls "The Leviathan", which may or may not exist, but performing the occasional small (or not so small) offering definitely lets him sleep better at night.

Neither his ship, nor his crew are anywhere in the vicinity, they exist somewhere in the world but would not interfere in the game. He's basically on vacation now.

I was thinking about playing a Marine. Depnding on your setting... if there's a base in the area it's easy. If there's a base but he needs to be more free, we could always make him a reservist. If there's no base near the town, he can be home on leave.
Jan 21, 2023 4:13 pm
@Monstersaurus90, sorry about deleting your post, I forgot to lock that thread. Oh my gosh! I didn't even realize that they lacked anything resembling an Educator. Thankfully, the rules swear it's easy to create custom Occupations, so I'll just create an Educator Occupation.
Jan 21, 2023 4:23 pm
Merivel, I'd go just a tad lighter on your background, no Murder, but that otherwise sounds fine to me! Heck if it was one death that he agonized over that would be okay.

Think about what ties him to Motivation, family? Friends? Also, say he lost the ship to debt collectors, and his old crew found other jobs; no reason to say they can't live there. Just keep in mind that these are level one characters. They might have accomplished a few things, but nothing too major.
Jan 21, 2023 4:32 pm
MaJunior, I remember that such details were glossed over in those TV shows; until it becomes important, we'll say he lives on Motivation and commutes via ferry. Maybe he lives with an aunt, grandparent, old family friend? Maybe he's married and his wife and kids live there?

One quibble. This is two years post 9/11. To my knowledge, Marines didn't usually stay stateside. However, I know shit about fuck about the military, so if you know of a reason he'd be Stateside, I'd love to hear it (I know that saying is normally antagonistic, but I'm serious, it'd be great to have a reason)

No major Life Accomplishments, he's basically a working dude. It's just that his line of work is on the not-entirely-legal side. As for the murder, I was kinda envisioning something like the occasional shoot-out between rival crews, or a deal gone sour, not exactly something he would agonise over. Imagine him as a low-tier mobster, but on the water.

I'm fine with him having lost the ship. I don't actually want him to have had deep ties to Motivation to start with, more like building them now? He's looking for a nice, quiet place to start over, maybe buy a new boat, he's struck a few friendships already, maybe even with some of the other PCs.
Jan 21, 2023 5:30 pm
The vast majority of Marines (well, our military in general) are always stateside.
Jan 21, 2023 5:34 pm
Merivel: You know what? As long as you can stick the landing, and make a character that would fit smoothly into a TV show like Charmed or even Everwood, and have bonds that tie him to Motivation, I don't care how we get there.

Also, I do like the idea of him living on a house boat, or just in a boat, Like Miami Vice. Let me see how much that might cost and if he could afford it, unless you hate the idea.
Jan 21, 2023 5:36 pm

@EugeneGM What would you recommend for Alfie's occupation? Is it possible to not have one? None of the listed occupations seem particularly appropriate for a high school student hahah :P

Oopsylon: Ah, while one might try to argue for any of them, here are my list of suggestions, with my personal favorites in bold.

Blogger: Listen, I don't know how Bloggers actually make their money, but I know more than a few LiveJournal writers who did just that in their teens.
Cult Member: Doesn't sound like a match for your character honestly, but, hey, anyone can become a member of a cult
Laborer Unskilled Laborer. Fry chef, waiter, sales clerk, shelf stocker, barista, you name it. The go to for teen employment.
Model: Maybe your character models? They could be generically attractive, modeling shirts and pants for Sears or some such thing.
Photographer: Peter Parker did it? Jimmy Olsen as well.
Institutionalized: Okay, stick with me. Despite what you might think, this one isn't an always institutionalized, just a sometimes thing. Maybe the luck thing has really taken its toll. There ARE mental institutions you kind of spend the weekend at, especially at a Summer Colony. Maybe you're in and out of rehab. Maybe you get arrested a ton for little things that aren't your fault. Anyways, this might work.
Vigilante: How is this a job? I don't know, ask the game designers, but Kick-ass was a teen, as was Spider-Man and Superboy. So, unlucky teen by day, LUCKMAN by night. Or just, ASKING DRUNK PEOPLE IF THEY NEED TO TAKE IT OUTSIDE MAN. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

A question about the backgrounds - I'm using the game info page as a reference for the character creation, and it says there that backgrounds give 4 points to be assigned to skills related to that backgrounds. However the Backgrounds forum thread says 6+ INT modifier. Which one is it?

Thanks for the suggestions! Laborer seems the most obvious choice (no idea how I missed it hahah), but I like your take on Institutionalised. Alfie’s life has been very unstable and pretty traumatic thanks to his ‘powers’, so it makes sense that he’d be expected to spend quite a lot of time in therapy… I suppose it could also be argued that high school itself is an ‘institution’ of sorts :P

Jan 23, 2023 2:58 pm
This game uses the standard d20 ability scores, and you get 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8 at character gen. All characters at the start of the game are humans; as such, you increase one score by +2, and two others by +1 each. These cannot be the same score. You may also select a score to receive a -2 to increase two other scores by +2. As before, none of these may be the same scores, meaning you will potentially have three scores with +2, two scores with +1, and one score with a -2.
Jan 23, 2023 4:59 pm
I've been working on the sheet, and now I have a skill question! Or rather, multiple skill questions.

- How interchangeable are skills? For example, Composure and Resolve - can I use one in place of the other during the game? Or is Composure just for social things, while Resolve is more for supernatural? Similarly, if I'm writing a speech (in a language character knows), can I use Writing instead of Linguistics? Same for Endurance/Resistance and Leadership/Presence, can they interchange?

- I don't understand Wits. The description of "acting on emotions" - isn't it basically Taunting/Persuasion? In what situation would one use Wits over something else? I always thought of Wits as what is Cleverness here, hence the confusion. XD

- Maneuvering. What kind of maneuvering? There are already Tactics for command and Vehicle Op for vehicles, and dodging is covered by Reflexes. An example would be nice!

- Also, is Streetwise supposed to be Charisma-based? No objection here, I just usually usually see it in other games as Intelligence or Wisdom.

Yes and no. Some skills do overlap, like Athletics and Acrobatics. However, in your examples, no...almost

Composure = Charisma Saving Throws
Resolve = Wisdom Saving Throws

Writing = Creative writing. Artistry, but writing.
Linguistics = Knowledge of languages. Typically used to decipher codes, ancient languages, know symbols. Forge documents and duplicate signatures. Can be used to write Speeches, which does overlap with Writing.
Endurance = Constitution saving throws
Resistance = Strength saving throws
Leadership = Command others, give them bonuses, motivate them. Can be used over recordings and even via writing.
Presence = First impressions, stand out in a crowd, intimidate and charm without speaking. Need to be present and seen to be used.

Honestly, me too. Of all the skills, Wits is the one I might remove, or move to Wisdom. Also Cleverness = Intelligence saving throws

-
FlyingSucculent says:

Grapple, trip, shove, disarm, reposition, etc. Melee is used to damage, Manuvering is used to execute combat maneuvers. It was called Unarmed, but I disagreed, as you can disarm and reposition someone using melee weapons, heck, sometimes even Ranged weapons. I was considering calling it Martial Arts, but that's usually only associated with unarmed combat.

FlyingSucculent says:

Streetwise is used to score drugs, track and/or locate someone using social contacts, gather information from others, know rumors and gossip, buy and sell things on the black market, negotiate for protection. The only thing that I know of that fits better with another attribute is finding food water and shelter, but this supposed to be, again, how you use others to find these things, and know the price of illicit goods, although again, that's supposed to be you gathering that information from others. Oh, maybe recognizing people for their street cred?
Jan 23, 2023 5:52 pm
Gotcha, thanks for answering! I'm probably gonna get confused with the overlapping, but hopefully not too much. XD

Also, can you post the Hunter and Investigator occupations, please? (Yeah, I'm trying to do this on a budget. :'D)
Or do you think something else would be more appropriate for a monster hunter? I was considering Vampire Slayer, but I am not sure I want to slay sentient/ex-human monsters... It probably has the correct skill list though...
Jan 23, 2023 6:21 pm
I was going to assume you might be a martial arts instructor. Oh, and I'm going to create a Hóuzi hòu rén (猴子后人) feat for you. That is how you'll be a Monkey.
Jan 23, 2023 6:31 pm
He is more firearms-focused than martial, so something with guns would be more fitting. He does have a staff, but it is a secondary weapon (and a thing to twirl around to be obnoxious), so probably won't be the best match for martial artist.

Here are his original skills, for reference:
[ +- ] Original Skills
So marksman investigator/hunter. Any advice on occupation for this? (I'm going to drop French and Survival, probably.)

And nice, a monkey feat! What does it translate to?

Rolls

Firing Range Instructor
Hunter
Private Investigator

Alright, now I'll start working on that feat
Jan 23, 2023 9:08 pm
Thank you! I think I'm going to go with Firing Range Instructor and assume that monster hunting is his, ahem, unofficial job.

And I'm going to submit the sheet - it's still a WIP, but at least I'm happy with its layout now. XD I automated the roll generation, although unfortunately I found no way to auto-determine dice type (I wish sheets supported IF statements, but alas), so these had to be typed in.

Thank you!
And now more questions - because I want him to be a sailor, but there's neither a background, nor occupation for that (and honestly, I'm fine with Criminal and Technician), can I put Sailing as a Hobby and put the points from there in Vehicle Ops? And then I suppose I need to specify that it's for boats?

About Disadvantages - I'd like my PC to have problems understanding and using "modern" technologies - computers, cell phones etc. Would Limitation cover this? I'll also disregard anything in Technician that has to do with computers and phones.
Jan 25, 2023 11:02 pm
There are a few ways to tackle that. If your character's hobby really is Sailing, you could go that route. But remember you gain a number of skill points in Dexterity skills equal to your Dexterity modifier, and a number of skill points to spend in ANYTHING equal to your Intelligence Score. So you could get ranks in Vehicle Ops from those places. I'd prefer you go that way, and make your character a little more three dimensional using Hobbies to flesh out his other interests.
Jan 26, 2023 12:28 am
Well, let's put it this way - it's something he's been doing for quite some time and really enjoys. From a metagaming perspective, I'd like to bump his skill to at least 1d4 to start with, because tbh I expect it to stay there for the rest of the game.

I'll move some points around, but I'll probably spend at least one "hobby" point there, the rest will go elsewhere.

Also, may I request more info on the "Talented" feat, when you get the time?

@FlyingSucculent, a few quibbles with your character sheet, and a few problems of my own making...

Reputation is Charisma Modifier + ranks in Presence + Level + Misc. The sheet currently doesn't calculate the level into the equation, and there is no slot for a Misc bonus.

The sheet has nowhere for one's Level to be recorded.

It's Animal Ken, not Animal Kinship

This one's on me, there is nowhere for carrying capacity, or a push, pull, and lift score.

This isn't anywhere to record Tool Training or Specializations for skills, which I only introduced today, so that's on me as well

It think that's it for now. Thank for making a sheet that auto-calculates.

Oops, forgot the level indeed. Here is the line for level:
Level: [_level=1]
(Just make sure to post it before reputation.)

As for miscellaneous bonuses, I was simply going to add them by hand, since adding a new column to the table makes it way too wide for my taste. But with specialization, I guess it's going to be too wide anyway now, so I'll mess around and see what looks good.

And here is the reputation with level added and an editable bonus, for now:
Reputation | [_$=floor(cha/2-5)+presence+level]+[_=0] (Charisma Modifier + Presence Rank + Level + Misc.)

It's a personal preference, Animal Ken just sounds weird to me. XD They are basically the same thing, aren't they? Either way, it should be easy to edit, since it's just text!

So, about recording bonuses/penalties. What do you all think about this format?

Alright, this feels petty on my part, but I'm doing this anyway, but not in a mocking manner, I'm open to renaming Animal Ken, I just didn't like calling it Animal Handling:

Ken = one's range of knowledge or sight.
"such determination is beyond my ken"
Similar:
knowledge
awareness
perception
understanding

This is also NOT a hill I want to die on, I'm more explaining my thought process. Modern20 flat out removed the Animal Handling skill, which I disagreed with, and replaced it with the Influence skill and a Feat. 🤢 I didn't like that; Modern20 basically put ALL Social interactions under one skill. It was honestly one of the system's only, and biggest, failings, at least in my eyes.

Sorry sorry! I'll post it here, it's buried in the Athletics skill.

Lifting
How much a character can lift is dependent on his Lifting Score. Calculating your Lifting Score is simple: Strength Modifier + Athletics RANKS + Athletics Skill Bonus + Athletics Equipment Modifier + Athletics General Modifier. These all use their Static modifier.

The table below lists the maximum amount a character can move or lift. How much weight a character is hauling around will also affect his movement and/or defense, as explained below.

Light Load: Your character can lift and carry this amount of weight without penalty.
Medium Load: If your character is carrying this amount of weight he suffers a –10 ft. movement penalty, a –3 Equipment penalty to Defense and a –3 Equipment penalty to the following skills: Acrobatics, Athletics, Arcana (when casting spells), Conjuration (while conjuring), Endurance, Heavy-Weapons, Legerdemain, Maneuvering, Melee, Occultism (when casting rituals), Resistance, Reflexes, Riding and Stealth.
Heavy Load: If your character is carrying this amount of weight he suffers a –20 ft. movement penalty, a –3 Equipment penalty to Defense and a –3 Equipment penalty to the following skills: Acrobatics, Athletics, Arcana (when casting spells), Conjuration (while conjuring), Endurance, Heavy-Weapons, Legerdemain, Maneuvering, Melee, Occultism (when casting rituals), Resistance, Reflexes, Riding and Stealth.
Max Load: If your character is carrying this amount of weight his maximum movement is 5 ft. per round. Your character is also always considered Surprised and has a maximum Defense of 10. Also, your character cannot actively perform any of the skills modified by a heavy load, and take a -10 Equipment penalty when using them reactively.
Push/Drag: Your character can push or drag this amount of weight with a movement penalty of –10 ft. per round, modified by terrain.

You kind of got the roll. Here is what it should look like:

Variable modifier from skill ranks + attribute score's variable modifier + variable modifier from skill bonus + total equipment variable modifier + total general modifier
Jan 28, 2023 12:48 am
Huh, didn't know that ken meant knowledge. Well, I'm not asking to rename it either way, I just named it this on my sheet for my own editing sake. :D (I bet no one noticed, but Vehicle Op's variable is just named Vehicles, too.)
EugeneGM says:

Wait, I'm confused now. What is a general modifier?

Variable modifier from skill ranks = floor(ranks/2)
Attribute score's variable modifier = floor(attribute/2)
Variable modifier from skill bonus - This is any extra bonuses from feats and the like, right?
Total equipment variable modifier - Does this have to be separate? I was going to just add it to bonus, since it wasn't in your equation in the rules discussion. Did you change it?
Total general modifier - No idea what this is. Edit: oh wait, is it the d20?

Edit2: ah, I see, general are situational bonuses/penalties. Got it.

New version for the table, this time with what I think is correct roll (except for general modifier), for Int 14.

Skill Ability Rank Can Be Used Modifier Extra Dice Roll Specialization Tool Training
Academics Int 3 1 2 (feat), 3 (equipment)1d2+1d4+1d6 1d20+1d4+1d2+1d4+1d6SomethingSomething

Does this work?
(...it's not going to look good on mobile, is it?)
Unrelated to the table - does Lucius need Control skill to use his tail?
Also, what feat(s) would I need to have a gun as my off-hand?

I think that you can place specializations, and Training in the same place you put feats, they don't have to be next to skills I do suppose.

Control is only for Super Powers.

No need for anything for off-hand use. You can improve it with the Two-Handed Fighting feat.
Jan 28, 2023 6:24 am
@FlyingSucculent I have a list of notes for your character. Oh, but before I continue, I don't care if you don't have columns for Skill Bonuses, Equipment, and General Bonuses, but make sure to list them correctly; that +2 (feat) bonus is probably a Skill Bonus, which stacks with other Skill Bonuses, but not Equipment Modifiers or General Skill Modifiers.

Alright:

Skills that have 0 ranks have a -4 modifier.

Your character needs 3 Allegiances.

You need one last Hobby.

I think it makes sense for your character to be able to speak Ancient Chinese. In addition, I believe you a missing two more languages.

You need to take two more feats. I recommend at least one be Two-Weapon Fighting.

You are missing your Sanity score.

Just so you know, your Achilles' heel is your Chest. I haven't uploaded it yet, but there is a hit location chart, and 17 is associated with the chest. If you want it to be another body part, let me know. Otherwise, figure out why your chest is your most vulnerable spot.

I might recommend taking more disadvantages.

Remember that one of the only way to earn XP is via your personality traits. The more traits you have, the more chances you have to earn XP.

His bond should tie him to the island of Motivation. I'd advise you say that his friend is living there, maybe as an exchange student? In addition, you still need 3 more bonds.

You still need two more aspirations, at a minimum.

His aversion to meat has two more aversions in there: Levered limbs and shapechangers. I'd list those separately. Not that levered limbs will be coming up that often.

You need at least one fear. Go with snakes, that's a good one for monkeys, right?
Jan 28, 2023 12:10 pm
I have updated the sheet since you last looked at it - it has sanity and -4s already. :D And also different numbers for attributes - which eliminated extra languages (not that they were extra at that moment, I noticed that you changed how number of languages is determined).

Chest vulnerability is easy - his Strength is one of his worst stats, so it's just him being easily winded. XD Or maybe it's all fragile monkey bones.

I don't really want to split meat aversion, I'd rather keep it as is and add two different ones, if you don't mind?

As for everything else, as I mentioned, it's still a WIP; I'm on the fence about a lot of things, so that's why it's missing a bunch of more no-math things. Math is easier sometimes. XD

"For my next action, I'm going to dump an entire ammo can on the ground and make snow angels with my rounds while the monster charges us, k? Cover me."

LMFAO.

I mean, the whole idea is that it's practically impossible...unless you get the drop on them, and you're RAMBO!

Let me see...alright, So Rambo saddles up. He's got a 25 Strength (+7), max ranks in Heavy-Weapons (+10), Dead-Aim (+2 GB), Loner (+2 GB), Sneak Attack (+2 GB), Point Blank Shot (+1 GB), Rapid Dominance (+2 GB), Unstoppable 3 and half HP (+1 GB because GB is at max +10) Attack Focus 1&2 (+2 SB), and Specialized Weapon Training (the +10 from heavy weapons is now +4d10), and has a Mastercraft (+5) Chain-Gun. And all those Extra attack feats.

So, that's 1d20+2d4+8d10-4d10-1d6

Okay, I went nuclear. I think the idea is that most people miss when you spray and pray. Only action heroes are good at that.
Jan 29, 2023 12:01 am
OMG @MaJunior! I didn't know I was editing that!
Jan 29, 2023 12:33 am
Lol

The issue with spray and pray is that it is essentially suppressive fire. Some (many?) bullets will still hit, just because of how many you put in the air... but it seems like in-game, unless you spec into that one thing with all you have, it's just a waste.

It could be argued you should actually have an easier time hitting a target with a handful of your shots, strictly because of how many you're firing.

Good point.

It looks like the old version did something completely different in D20 Modern . -4 non accumulative bonus for an additional 2 damage dice.

Let's just do that. It's nowhere near as confusing.

I still need your input on my Debt situation (I sent you a PM a few days ago). Also, I would like to ask how are we going to deal with character inventory. Unlike DnD and other games where the characters are carrying all their belongings, we all live in a city, have lodgings and consequently own any number of random stuff. Is there going to be some "I own X item" and "I happen to carry X item with me" roll?
Feb 7, 2023 8:28 pm
@Merivel WHOOPS! I thought I had typed and sent a response, but let me do that right now.

About housing:

Quote from D20 Modern, page 93.

The rules for Wealth don’t say anything about paying rent or having a mortgage. That’s because such day-to-day expenses like rent, utility bills, and groceries are already built into the Wealth system-your Wealth score reflects your buying power after paying for such basics.

SO...that kind of answers the question. Let me do a write up; I think I will create a Disadvantage called Homeless as well.
Feb 8, 2023 1:22 am
I wasn't talking about the lodgings, but rather what's in them.

I mentioned DnD as an extreme opposite of our situation. There the PCs often lead a rather nomadic life, they carry everything they own, so all their equipment is listed on their character sheets. Weapons, armour, 50ft of hempen rope, candles, rations, potions and so on. Depending on how strict the DM is, it can be very heavy on resource management.

We however will be living in a town and each of us will be lodging somewhere (at least to begin with, lol). The amount of stuff people accumulate in their dwellings is insane, it would be impossible and unnecessary to list everything our PCs own on the character sheets. But there might be times when that would be important. Let me give you a few examples.

One of us has been hurt while fighting something supernatural. We can't take them to the hospital, so we retreat to one of the PC's lodging and try to patch up the injury ourselves. Ok, but what do we have at hand? Do we even have a first aid kit? None of us has it in their character inventory. We are in someone's house, it would make sense that there would be one, but it's by no means a certainty.

Another one: again, something supernatural is happening, we need to draw some protective sigils or whatever in salt. Do we have salt? Do we have enough salt? Seems like a trifle, but what if it's the middle of the night, and lives are hanging on the line?

How would we resolve such situations, would there be some sort of a luck roll, or a coin toss, or...?

Oh, there's rules for that. I'll find em.
Feb 8, 2023 2:00 am
In the modern world, nearly anything that isn’t illegal is readily available provided one has the money to buy it. As a result, even people on limited incomes might own vast arrays of stuff. Keeping track of everything a hero owns is well beyond the scope of these rules. Instead, it is assumed that characters can buy—or that they already have—anything they need as long as it comports with their income level.

That doesn’t mean that a hero always has everything they need on their person when they need it. Rather, players should note the things their characters carry and consider useful on a day-to-day basis. This includes any weapons their heroes own that they are likely to take with them into a dangerous situation.

Alright, I think I'm done with the sheet! Moved some numbers for skills around, but mostly just added personality traits and specializations.
I also ran out of ideas for tool trainings halfway through, so now it has such gems as "Microwave" (because Lucius can't cook) and "Gun As a Projectile" (as in throwing the gun itself). Not that it's a problem. XD

The only thing I'm not too sure about is equipment, but I hope one smartphone is within my wealth limitations.

Feb 11, 2023 5:45 am
Addendum: Which is to say there were no smartphones in 2003.
Feb 11, 2023 6:45 am
@FlyingSucculent:

I better say this first, and apologies if you already knew this: In this world, normal humans would see Lucius as a human. They don't see him as a Houzi. They rationalize anything supernatural he does. He could even tell people, and they'd not see it. Only humans who witness undeniable evidence of the Supernatural, who don't experience mental distress, can see the truth, and only be allowing themselves to believe, as well as those who are themselves Supernatural.

I changed the tool training from Smartphones to Mobile Phones, as Smartphones didn't exist in 2003. Mobile Phones still had an average adoption rate of around 54%

I changed Routers tool training into Network Engineering. This will work well in conjuction with Laptops and Mobile Phones.

If your character knows how to use computers, they know how to use Microwaves. I changed the Microwave tool training into Microwaved Meals Specialization

I changed Gun As a Projectile into Improvised Weapons. Unfortunently, you need to name specific firearms, you cannot just list Pistols and Revolvers. Uh...I'll figure out how to add a list?

I changed Silver Bullets to a Specialization in creating Silver Bullets.

I changed your tool trainings into First Aid Kit, Field Surgery Kit, and a specialization in Diagnosing Poisons

I changed Agrresive Occult Creatures into Monsters...because ironically, that's less specific...

Due to their closeness, you could say Samantha is Unmasked, and sees Lucius as he truly is, a Houzi. Up to you.

Nelkkeltekor would normally be a little over the top...but your character is a Monkey being. So, Werecrocs do exist...as do Troglodytes...as do worshippers of Sebek...which one should he be? Edit: OOOH! Or a Gargoyle! Edit 2: OR AN ALIEN!

I'd like to change Blue Pearl Lake to a Lagoon, although we can still name it a Lake. See also: Lake Tashmoo

I really think Lucius should have a rank in Taunting, as his Odd Sense of Humor and Arrogant quirks lend himself to this

Due to your Quirk of being a Daredevil, I have given you a free Specialization against fear in two skills that normally can't have specializations: Composure and Resolve.

For Access you need to select one of those (or two). Also, how did a Chinese national get Confidential Access and a Concealed Carry License? I'm not saying it's impossible, but highly improbable.

You need to select two Perks. You also gain the Unmasked Perk for free as a Houzi.

How old is he?

Gotcha, not a problem for me. Is it okay if Samantha (his best friend) knows? Maybe not necessarily sees, but he probably told her at some point.
Edit: oh, you addressed it later! Cool, she is in the know then.

I thought Marksmanship doesn't have specializations? I originally had things like quick reload and trick shots here, before seeing the restriction. XD
I don't think Lucius would know how to manufacture bullets, so I'll probably change it to something else. Like a specific gun!

Hmm, tough choice. I think I'll go with a were-croc, just so it's a bit more in theme with Lucis himself! (Also so I can draw him. I can't draw aliens. XD)

It was a coast in its first incarnation, but I went with the lake after examining the game's background image. The vibe of a mountain lake in the middle of a forest, with campers and swan boats, you know? I don't mind the lagoon though, as long as it still has the restaurant, campers and boats. XD

I thought about it, but I don't think it's entirely in character. He likes attracting enemy attention, but it doesn't mean that he's good at it! I imagine him being very obvious when he tries to distract or taunt, so most enemies see right through him. (Maybe I'll get a rank in it during the game later!)

Without getting too much into state laws and whatever... in broad strokes, any US citizens can get a concealed carry permit. (As far as I know that would include those with dual citizenships.) I see this as a chance to use all those laughably bad "alternate phrases" you hear on TV and, more often, in workplaces.

Look, everyone knows "shut the front door" really means "shut the fuck up," but it gets us past the censors, so we use it.

I assume the occassional "damn/dammit" is about as bad as we get.

Alright... submitted, I think I found everything I needed and got it worked out...

Except for Moonlighting. I took the feat, figuring he works at the hospital on weekends or some night shifts, but we need to figure out what the partial benefits are I guess.

Oh, as for Occuption Wealth calculation... does the skill ranks used to determine wealth include the 2 phantom ranks? It says they don't apply to qualifying as prereqs for feats or occupations, but says nothing about wealth calculation.

Also... do we round up or down?

Phantom Ranks do count towards wealth.

Unless otherwise specified, always Round Down.

Let me look up Moonlighting...

Moonlighting
You work two jobs.
General
Effect: You may select a second occupation. This second occupation grants you half the Wealth bonus of a standard occupation and you may only select two of the occupation’s Improved Feats.
Feb 11, 2023 9:20 pm
Nice, that is easier than I figured it would be. Lol

I assume if it isn't mentioned in the feat write-up, it applies normally? (Professional skills, professional training, etc.) Also assuming there are no perks from the secondary occupation?

I guess I'll need General Practicioner then.

Feb 12, 2023 3:03 am
Ok, stupid question regarding wealth and the moonlighting feat.

Moonlighting says the second profession only provides half the wealth bonus of the occupation.

Initially, I took that to mean the bonus as calculated by the most ranks in one of your professional skills... you would effectively get 1/4 (round down) of your skill ranks as a wealth bonus (as opposed to tbe standard 1/2)... but then I remembered you get a wealth bonus for taking Improved Feats. Is that a +1 instead of +2?

Lastly, part of the starting equipment for a general practicioner is a +4 wealth bonus. I wouldn't think that would be halved (it's listed as starting gear) but... moonlighting just says "half the wealth bonus."

Hmmm...you're correct about the first part.

For now, I just think that it applies to those things and not the starting equipment.

Oh, also, I forgot to give them proficiency with Laptops, Mobile phones, and pagers. And to give them a pager. And a Mobile phone charger.

Sheesh. How silly of me!

Honestly, I sort of figured a charger was implied. Back in 2003, every device came with one.

@MaJunior :

For my own sanity, I added a note next to all of your professional skills that they contain ghost ranks. If you really hate it, feel free to delete it.

I've checked my math a few times, and I'm quite willing to say I'm wrong, but it LOOKS like you're 3 points over on skill points spent.
9 points from all your ability score modifiers
16 points from Intelligence score
9 points from Background
4 points from Hobbies

Your reputation is listed as 5, but I believe it should be 4:
-1 Charisma Modifier
+1 Level
+4 Professional Reputation

You still need to assign Tool Training and/or Specializations from your skill ranks.

You should know that on average it takes 13-16 years to become a surgeon. If he really pushed it, he could have been getting college credits at 16 in high school, and with enough credits and dedication, he could finish his undergrad at 19. From there, again, by pushing himself to the limit, he could finish medical school in about 4 years instead of 5 or 6, making him 23. Residency takes 5 to 7 years, and that can't be rushed; at the minimum, that would make him 28...oh, that tracks! Anyways, it sounds like someone who should more ranks in Endurance, and especially Resolve.

I'd revisit his quirks. They're all kind of...blah, and not really quirks. Personally, I'd redefine them like so:

Level-Headed: Doesn't like being rushed Determined: Stubborn, or, Doesn't know when to quit Proud: Prideful Helpful: Self-Sacrificing Good Natured: Non-confrontational

You've named his wife and son, but I still need a description for his best friend, (even if its minimal). His unit is more of his bond with a life outside of Motivation.

He has a lot of combat feats for someone who joined the marines a little less than 1.5 years ago. Maybe drop one and take something else. Personally, I vote for Efficient sleeper...which I see I never added. *Sigh* Let me get that completed...

Edit: Minor quibble, can we call it Limited Government instead of Limit Government? One sounds like he hopes and possibly even strives for a future with a more Limited Government, one that doesn't restrict the rights of others in the name of freedom and safety, and the other sounds like he is dedicated to a one-man crusade to Limit the Government.

Yeah, I underlined the professional skills. Figured that would be sufficient annotation for the "ghost ranks." Notes are fine though, if you prefer.

+1 Reputation from the Career Advancement feat?

Tool training/specializations. Crap, ok yeah. Not sure what to take for those.

I'll redo the quirks I suppose.

The bond to his unit is just that... the people under his command. Camaraderie, Esprit de Corps, Brotherhood, call it what you will.

As for combat feats, neither seems particularly unreasonable... Marksmanship and shooting defensively are pretty basic. Officers carry sidearms, hence focus on small arms. By the time you finish snap-in week, live fire week, and qualifying (that's just in boot camp), then depending on various factors you possibly attend either School of Infantry (9 weeks) or Marine Combat Training (5 weeks), and you qualify with your unit annually (which may happen twice in a year and a half depending on when you join the unit), plus the time the unit put in at the range and training for things like MOUT... there's a surprising amount of weapons training.

MaJunior says:

OOOOOOH.

To his unit, upon reviewing my character creation rules, yeah, that tracks, I said you could have a bond outside of Motivation. Could you define them? Also, could you also define the patients bond? These summer colonies tend to be part tight-knit communities, part tourists, and part summer residents (with Motivation having an extra 3 month bump into Autumn, due to it's ties to the occult.) They should normally not see much worse than heart-disease patients. Instead, he'll have already seen some weird-ass shit that shouldn't be at that magnitude, like gorings and horrid animal bites, frost bite in the middle of the summer, exsanguinations, and a staggering number of cases of amnesia to accompany all of that.

I guess I'm not entirely sure what you're asking for in terms of defining his unit? Like, do you need me to do a quick and dirty breakdown of structure?

The bond for patients would be a sense of responsibility for anyone he's currently treating. If you're under his care, he gives his all to get you what you need. From fighting with insurance companies to arguing with administration. (From a TV perspective, I see him sort of like Dr. Cox, in that he won't let rules or red tape keep him from doing the right thing.)
Feb 13, 2023 7:21 am
Like names? Or is it too many people?
Feb 13, 2023 7:37 am
It's too many.

As a Leutenant, you're still looking at having like 30+/- Marines under you.

And those are just the ones you're in charge of at that rank. When you pick up Captain, you can have about 3 to 4 times that. Etc.

Kay, makes sense 'den
Feb 14, 2023 2:09 am
So, if I'm right, all I have left is training/specializations... 9 total.

As I'm not entirely sure what to do with them, I may just take weapons specializations?

Tool training is weird to me... like some of them make sense -- you need training and tools to collect evidence or repair a computer... but training for a mobile phone? Everyone knows how a phone works.
Feb 14, 2023 4:52 am
Upon further reflection, I think I've gone a bit off the path with tool trainings. For now, Mobile phones shouldn't be a tool training. I'll be examining others and tighting them up.
Feb 15, 2023 4:41 pm
Alrighty... took 8 trainings, and a specialization. That... should finish me off?
Feb 15, 2023 7:24 pm
Only one thing: You can't Specialize in a weapon without the Specialized Weapon Training feat. Other than that, everything looks good; feel free to start posting!
Feb 15, 2023 7:30 pm
Oohh... ok, that makes sense. I guess I'll swap it real fast.
Feb 15, 2023 8:11 pm
Oh, did you want to find pics for your supporting characters? Or do you want me to do that?
Feb 15, 2023 8:36 pm
I can look around, see what I can find.
Feb 15, 2023 11:46 pm
Sorry for the double post, but pictures got me thinking... how much world building do you want me to do? Like, do you want bullet points for the wife or best friend? Should I design A Tavern? Anything along those lines I can do to help out?
Feb 16, 2023 12:45 am
As much or as little as you like in those regards, at least what you don't want me to detail. Just make sure they aren't Mary Sues/Gary Stu
Feb 16, 2023 1:05 am
Sounds good.
Feb 16, 2023 1:55 am
Oh, and the setting discussion post is where you can contribute if you want to find out ahead of time what I'm thinking of as it relates to the Supernatural elements of the setting
Feb 16, 2023 2:08 pm
So, I'll start by saying I don't want to make full sheets -- I don't think they're needed? Just going with more of a bullet points approach, with some general input on characterization.
[ +- ] Bethany Wallace
[ +- ] Bullet Points
[ +- ] Steven Wallace
[ +- ] Bullet Points
[ +- ] Paul Stibbe

Oh! No need to give them in-game stats, I meant, a 1 sentence description or its equivalent. :p I'll take it though
Feb 16, 2023 7:12 pm
Oh, well... hey, less work for you! Lol

Still going to work on the shop though.
Feb 17, 2023 4:01 am
Alright, I have changed my specializations from Pistols/Revolvers to Ruger .22/Pathfinder respectively (decided to keep Silver Bullets Manufacturing after all, too), added the perks (Unmasked, Tumble and Called Shot) and changed Access privilege to only be for sensitive installations. Anything else I need to tweak? :D

@FlyingSucculent For now, I'm just going to approve, so we can get this show on the road, and I'll nit pick stuff later. But see my comment to MaJunior below...

@MaJunior Speaking of nit picking, here's something I realized, and you wouldn't have known: Instinct is rolled when combat begins to avoid being surprised, and either Reflexes of Wits is rolled to determine initiative. This game won't revolve around combat, but I suspect you'll want your character to be combat ready, if you'd like to move skill points around to get at least one into Instinct.
Feb 17, 2023 6:32 am
Well, I had two ranks in Instinct already... I shifted one point out of science and into Reflexes though.
Feb 17, 2023 9:02 am
! What the hell was I looking at?

Edit: NM, figured it out! Whoops! Sorry ya'll!
Feb 17, 2023 5:59 pm
I have 5 Reflexes and 1 Wits, I'll just grab more Instinct if/when it's time to level up. :P
