The city of Gamulur

Jan 24, 2023 4:04 am
The city of Gamulur was originally a small dwarfish town struggling after the Shattering. Some time ago trade was establish with the nearby human and elvish regions brining into Gamulur new people and money causing to city to grow though much of the development is outside the dwarvish city councils control. The dwarves mostly live and work in the inner city, a walled section that is closed to non dwarves, though a few manage the cities interest at the river docks and outer gate. Mostly in the way of collecting tax's. The outer city is predominantly human with a few halfling families as well as an elven business or two.
The outer city is split into four districts, the residential, commerce, docks, and warehouse districts. The residential and commerce districts are patrolled by the mixed human dwarven guard and are considered safe and respectable. The warehouse and dock districts on the other hand have been relegated to the lower social elements.
A recent flurry has been going on for the last couple of months. An expedition based from Gamulur has been exploring a city from the Dawn Age with reports of sections surviving the Dawn War and Shattering. News of this seems to have spread as adventurers, mercenaries, and other of similar though less reputable professions as well. As an outlying trade hub of the dwarven kingdom the city garrison has risen its efforts to maintain peace and redirect the new rougher elements out of town as quickly as possible.

Waking to a new day, hungry as usual, Baruman instantly verifies his surroundings and safety. All is well. Wishing he has saved a bit of the last meal from yesterday he stretches and verifies no one is about before leaving his hidden sleeping quarters.

@wilsric And so begins the tale of Baruman the urchin. Go ahead and describe your situation and begin your day. As this city has only been reference and the above post is the most detailed to date go ahead and add any details you care to. I wil create your first challenge based on what you describve and do.

Baruman walked down to the docks and leant against one of the wooden buildings used as a port office, watching as another new boat sailed towards the shore to join several already there. They were increasingly frequent, and the local gossip that surrounded them had many both scared and excited. Stories of strange monsters and great wealth that could change your life.

Normally he would be on the shoreline looking to make a little coin loading and unloading the boats, but right now, he just wanted to watch the spectacle of these strangers from many races, several of which he had never seen before. Many wore battered armour and carried fearsome weapons, their eyes continuously monitoring all that was around them.

He daydreamed of the distant shores that they had seen, and the adventures they had, and wondered if he would ever have the courage to do the same. His grumbling stomach brought him back to reality. Well, he thought, they're rich, and they need things carried, at least I can earn some money from them. With that, he strode towards the dock .
Jan 25, 2023 2:31 am
The river side docks are full of a mix of barges, flat boats, a few with sails, and even one of the dwarven steam boats. With the increase in human boats the steamers only go upriver now but Baruman remembers when they were prety much the only real ships around. The swift river currents upriver make it hard for other boats but down river is wider and the currents more easily plied by the pole men of the barges and rafts.
As Baruman gets close to the docks he sees two people he reconizes. Hakeack the dwarven dock master and that human clerk in charge of recruiting adventurers. Hakeack is looking over his books and appears relatively free. The clerk has a pair of rough looking humans in tow and is heading towards one of the piers that juts out into the river. Hakeack is usually good for directions where Baruman can pick up an odd job but that human is rarely at the docks and never for too long. The peers are off limits without cause and Baruman has been tossed in the river a couple of times for sneaking in looking for work, coin, or food. It's all the same to Baruman but the dock hand always say he is underfoot, though that is usually only because they are trying to kick him.
Jan 25, 2023 10:59 am
Baruman strode towards the dock, heading towards Hakeack, hoping to pick up some work. From the corner of his eye he caught sight of the human that he's seem hanging around the dock before, talking to the strange adventurers and directing them to various locations to carry out work.

The daydreams of the adventurers still lingered in his mind.

I can't just scrounge for the same work every day, or my life will never change, but these adventurers have travelled the lands and faced all types of foe. How could a tiny fool like me ever do that? I can't just walk up to them and ask for work, those humans look really tough! I have no idea what it involves, they would probably laugh in my face!

He paused, uncertain of what to do, then with a rush of adrenaline started after the human clerk. The clerk and humans were heading towards one of the larger piers, jutting out into the river. This jetty was used by many boats every day, and had crates and barrels stacked up along it's edges, being loaded and unloaded from the boats along it's side. Baruman bent low and moved swiftly, darting between the cargo to remain hidden. If he could get close enough, he might be able hear their conversation and establish what type of work they were doing.

Yes, roll. On Play by Post I recommend players roll for anything they want to do that has a chance of failure.
Next time rolls with advantage, 3d6, due to your urchin background. Anything within train related to your Background or one of your traits gains advantage.
Moving "purposefully" Barumanacts like he belongs there and is on some job but uses the people and terrain to hide his presence from this who will recognize him and likely stop him. Occasionally ducking behind pulls of cargo to rush ahead he catches up with the clerk and the pair of adventurers in time to hear one of them growing something at the clerk.
Falcon
. . . have to do this junk!? The boss said for you to send us to the expedition so that is what you'll do!
Corwin
It is my job to supply the expedition with what they require. Besides scouts they are also in need of basic manpower. As a laborer you will be on base more, which is where we need you. I've slipped as many of our men into the mercenaries as possible already. Besides we're still short. You assured me your other friend would be with you so I told them I had a halfling. Where are we going to thing another one at this point? Just shut up, do at you're told and wait for more instructions.
Now hurry up and go get the rest of the supplies the boss asked for from warehouse 3.

They stare off for a few moments with the other "adventurer"? standing awkwardly off to the side before tugging on his glowering companions sleeve Come on Fal, lets just do the job. And after one last glare from Fal they turn to head back to the town while the clerk continues down the pier heading to one of the 6 man river boats.
Jan 25, 2023 6:46 pm
Baruman ponders what he has overheard. If these experienced, capable, strong humans aren't getting the adventurous work they want, then why would anybody give a job to a tiny young lad like him? How could he prove that he could be of use to them?

He looks into the freezing cold river running by the pier. The light sparkles on the top of the waves crashing against the wooden jetty, hypnotising him as he struggles to come to a decision. The crash of a chest being thrown out of a nearby boat shocks him out of his reverie. Well, if it comes to it, he's been booted into the icy water more than once before and come out of it OK.

Moving as fast as he can without drawing attention to himself, he scuttles after the clerk, ducking for cover when necessary as before. moving more confidently now, his eyes follow the swaying movement of the clerks pockets, trying to determine which might contain an item of value. The left pocket definitely hangs lower, and sways wider of the clerk's hip as he walks. Hoping this means it contains a purse, Baruman dips into it with his nimble fingers.
OOC:
My plan here is to steal from the clerk, then shout to get his attention, throwing the item back to him while saying 'so you're looking for a short-arse with some skills? Presuming that I don't get caught of course... I'm not sure how to do this, If I'm successful, should I make a second post saying this, and leave you to fill in if it's a failure? Or should I wait for you to respond in either case?

Slipping up behind the clerk, Baruman reaches tho snag a pouch. Though his knife is quick and sharp the strap holding lasts just long enough for the clerk to notice and a hand drops to grab Baruman's but the duende manages to avoid his grasp and make some distance.

"Innept? There's none faster and stealthier than me, I was just letting you know I'm here! I'm hardly about to steal from my future boss now am I? That's right, I know you're looking to employ a little one, and there aren't many littler than me. You won't find anybody nippier and nimbler than me, and I know how to look after myself, so, What's the job?"

His heart beating fast in his chest, the terrified Baruman tries to look the clerk confidently in his eyes.

Looking down at Baruman the man scoffs Sure. thats all as he pats his other pouches, without taking his eyes off of you. Finding nothing amis he glares. So an oportunistic evesdropper as well as a cut purse Fine fine we can do it your way and the old man chuckles with an evil look in his eye.

Reaching into a leather satchel at his side he pulls out a portabe writing desk along with an ink well and quill. Crouching down he arranges things neatly and holds it out to you. The job is an opportunity at adventure. You just sign here. I give you 10 gold and you hop on that boat there tht were loading things onto. This here contract says you will get 10 gold a tenday week of service plus bonuses. All you have to do is a little scouting and vermin removal.
From where you are you can see the parchment is a form mostly filled out with a spot for a signature at the bottom. Though not fully literate you have learned to read most of the common symbols and the form has a short section of this that seems to match what the man says along with a bit about penalties should you break contract or tell anyone about what you do or where you go while under contract. Minimum of 1 month service.
OOC:
Rolling persuasion is fine. Rolling anything is an indicator of intended action by me. The results can be modified by what you do and how you do it so the explanation combined with the roll is perfect.

FYI, here it is not an issue as you are alone but when you get in groups it is a good idea to post as your character. The "Post As" drop down above the post text box will let you select your character.

Baruman looked back over the shore of the town, still bustling with activity. The old fishing shacks where he had earned coin using his nimble fingers to fix the snagged nets. Hakeack organising the unloading of a newly arrived boat. The streets full of people carrying on with their lives as if they didn't understand that he was about to fundamentally change his life. This was all that he had ever known, but 10 Gold. There was no decision now, he had never come near to having such a large regular income.

"Count me in then. You won't regret it. I get the first 10 in advance yeah?"

He took the quill and carefully scratched out the letters of his name as he knew them.

Smirking he takes back the sheet. Good. We've just the job for you. He pulls a smal purse from his satchel and tosses it to you. Inside are 10 GP. He walks off laughing.
Hank
A neaby boatman looks over and with a small guesture gets your attention.
Go get cleaned up and some decnt cloths. The river boat captain won't let you on the boat liket that. I sure hope you know what you're doin kid. That contract is binding. You're in it now. I'll be seein ya. Turning back to pick up a couple os sacks he heads towards the boat you are now destined to be on.
With you intimate knowledge of the town we can skip the shopping. Just let me know what you do to prepare to leave and any items you will be buying. This game does not track money and resources too close so just list your thing in order of importance and I will let you know when your money runs out.
Jan 27, 2023 11:50 am
With the money burning a hole in his pocket, Baruman heads straight to the bakers and buys a meat pie. He devours it quickly, the gravy dripping down his chin, more used to scrounging the stale bread from the previous week that was about to be binned.

Hanks's words still reverberated in his mind. What on earth had he got himself into? What was he going to need to survive outside of the town? Realising that time was passing, and desperate not to miss the boat, he runs around the shops and buys:

New Clothes: strong boots, a warm hat with holes for his ears to poke out of, hard wearing top and trousers with a hidden pocket and a travelling cloak.
A backpack
A bedroll
Rations
Rope
A cosh, hidden in his secret pocket
Lantern
Oil for lantern
Lock picks to replace his worn ones
Small crowbar
Small mirror on a handle
Pliers
Scissors

Baruman looked over his newly purchased items. He had never in his life spent so much money one go! Moving quickly through the streets he heads back towards the boat the he saw Hank heading to.
Jan 27, 2023 2:25 pm
Getting outfitted takes almost the entire hour but you make it back in time. The only real trouble was getting new lock picks and you had to trade in all your old ones to get the new set. The bath with warm water and soap was a rare experience and you wished you could have relaxed into the tub longer.

As you walk up to the boat in your new clothes you get a double take from Hakeack. The dwarf watches for a moment before shaking his head and going back to his business. Hank only give a slight not befit continuing his work. Falcon and his buddy though look you over. You recognize their type as bullies, a lower class than most of the adventurers you've seen pass through here on their way to the expedition base. Corwin is telling with a man you take for the boat captain and they both look at you before separating.
The captain steps into his boat and orders the crew to prepare to cast off and calls for passengers to board the front and stay out of the way.
Quickly getting on the boat, the first to roll have been on that isn't tied up a thrill passes through you. The boat men push off and use their long poles to get the boat into the rivers current where long oars are used to manage it with the captain at the rudder.

A cold blooded welcome
Athria stands outside the dwarven city of Gamulur. The last town she was in was a small human freehold where she overheard a couple adventurers talking about an "Expedition" that has been bringing in a tidy flow of trinkets and relics to sell to nations, collectors, and other fools with too much money and comfort. The tails included some stories about magic and troubles with goblins, kobolds, and fey. Intrigues she spend a while in the freehold looking onto these tails and learned that Gamulur was one of the cities it all started and they were still recruiting.

Though a bit unsure about fighting monsters and the like she is quite comfortable scrabbling though old ruined building and figures scrounging up a few good things to sell of can't be too hard. And so she set out to find her fortune somewhere different and possibly put her old skills to a new use. Archeologist sounds impressive. She's never heard of that guild before digging up old things from the last age and getting paid good gold for it sound like an odd job. At least the owners would all be dead so its not realy stealing.

As she head towards the town gates she ponders her next step. There are a coupe of approaches she could try including simply locating the recruiter and trying to get a slot in the expedition or looking for local connections for a back way into the business. Both have risks as she is an unknown and she is not sure how the locals operate or if the expedition still has an open recruitment policy.

Athria shifts the pack across her back and tugs at the hem of her cloak. The urge to drop to all fours and scurry along to find a discreet way inside suddenly looms as her tail swishes in anticipation. Her throat flexes, letting the green frills across her jaw and head flare upwards for a moment as a stark contrast to her smooth black scales. But the fear of being seen, of a heavy hand striking her for being seen or failing to provide adequate loot was her old life, and she cut those people loose. She sees the men and dwarfs, their soft vulnerable flesh and their hair; a breeding ground for all sorts of parasites no doubt. They have no claws, those stumpy fingers seem literally pointless. Athria always grudgingly admitted the achievements of these soft-skins in war and materials, but physically she always pitied them. They had work, they had the gold lust and that's what she needed them for. Gamulur seemed a mighty big place, and Athria wanted to start feeling it out.

Every open door is an invitation 'Ria. Save shadow-walking for later

Athria straightens herself up, to her full 5 feet and pulls down the hood as she approaches the guards. She knows how these humans smile but mimicking it with her needle like teeth never seems to convey the right attitude so she keeps her mouth pursed and gives a short bow. She reaches behind to her pack, where a small tree like a bonsai rests in a clothand rope bundle, leaves and branches twining upward. She plucks a fruit and with a flick of her claws cuts it in two. She offers the halves to the guards, while her head is to the side.

"Good Morrow my Fellows. Please, accept a token from the open road. I seek passage to seek work regarding your noble 'Expedition'. Pray who makes decisions about such things?"

Athria's speech is rather smooth thanks to her human upbringing, yet she can't entirely mask her mouth's natural inclination, and there's a couple of clicks and hisses that escape.

Athria's plan seems to be to get inside the city and do some spying on this Corwin. She'll gauge whether he'd be receptive to her joining without money for passage. If not, she'll try and stow away on the next ship

"Corwin? Most helpful good sirs. And as for keeping the peace, it's my intention you don't even know I'm here"

Athria steps forward only to interrupted by the human with the clipboard. Her mouth opens and for a second the human gets to see the dark red of her mouth and the rows of teeth. Her tongue flicks out and she picks up the scents on the air, particularly the sweat of so many humans in close proximity. Her new found freedom makes her urges for fight or flight a little harder to quell but Athria's determined to be counted as worthwhile, especially if she can do so atop riches and finery.

I am Athria. Couldn't tell you where I'm from, I'm something of a former slave. I intend only to be here long enough to move on for good fortunes. And I'm acquainted with Deaf Charlie on Blinker Street

Her last phrase seems a little odd, having pulled it from her former employer. In thieving circles, going to see "Deaf Chatterbox Charlie on Blinker Street" was code for See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil, a promise not get in the way of another's plans. Athria doesn't expect any present to recognize the phrase, and if they do then they certainly should be inclined to let her be long enough for any local crime boss to give her a shakedown of the rules. The Lizardfolk looks to the Men and Dwarves, waiting to see if she's done enough to warrant getting inside, and ready to run if not.
May 20, 2023 1:56 pm
At a nod from the human with the clipboard the lead dwarf waves you in through the gates. As you enter you see the other human wave you in as well. Only how he does it you learned in your time "working" the city streets means you are being watched. The trouble is this indicates an faction you are not a member of has eyes on you. It can either mean the city watch or another gang.

As you pass through the thick stone gatehouse and into what you know to be the outer city you can tell by the 2 pairs of guards in sight that this area of town has a bit of respectability. The wide street is paved with neatly laid stonework and wide enough for 2 wagons with room to spare. The buildings are mostly clay on the first floor and look to be shops and businesses with a mix of wood and clay on the second and have the look of businesses and and occasional residence. Moving down the street you can tell this is a healthy city and doing good for itself. Some of the towns and villages you have seen since leaving your own were much worse off or just getting started.

Though the shattering has been over for over 50 years it has been a rather difficult time from what Athria has heard. Trouble with the gods and magic abounded not to mention entire regions being rearranged. But that was then and things are looking up now.
Moving through the commercial district Athria finds her way to a large market square that looks to be the hub of the outer city. With the warehouse and dock district off to one side and the residential and commercial districts on the other. The square has 4 roads into it each from the commercial that Athria just arrived on, to the dwarven inner city, to the warehouse district, and to the docks. The market area is wide open and looks to have held many stalls in the early morning. In the mid day head only the permanent structures are present along with a few vendors pushing carts.

May 20, 2023 8:32 pm
The open spaces and clean look of the market makes Athria nervous, she feels exposed. She does take a moment to sniff deeply and try to ascertain the various spices from the food vendors, but decides to make her way for the docks, where she'll be a lot more in her natural element, and will hopefully be closer to this Colwin and the Expedition that promises fortune and glory.
May 20, 2023 9:37 pm
The path to the docks is easy to pick out and you soon make you way to the docks district. Knowing how dock hands operate and the fact that the expedition is a well known topic Athria does not think it will be hard to get details on it. Simply wandering while listening to the locals Athria picks up a smattering of info about the way things work. The dwarves run the city from their walled inner city but have allows the outer city districts a portion of autonomy. The docks are mostly run by humans with several larger businesses being owned and managed by dwarves. The commercial district is a mix of human, dwarf, and hin (halfling/hobit) with the local hin actually managing most public services in the way of bars, taverns, inns, diners, etc. The warehouse district is a mix of dwarven and human interests.

The bustle is easier to be inconspicuous, and Athria keeps her cloak tight around her. The jostling, the smells are more familiar here and she keeps her wits about her, knowing there'll be some elements here that care not for settling things via the city watch.

The places where people gather to eat and drink are perfect for listening in, and a few choice drinks to the right person can cause loose lips. She starts off asking about Colwin and the current news about the Expedition, but she's also interested if there are other parties keen to get their hands on the artefacts and spoils coming from it's labours. Just because Colwin heads the Expedition doesn't mean he'll offer the best price...

Starting with general questions Athria narrows her focus after getting the feel of the situation and soon learns the Expedition started with the strictest secrecy. However it has been going for a couple of months now and the regular supply runs and influx, and departure, of adventurers has lead to a slow spread of information. The guards, artisans, basic laborers, and researches seem to have only increased and seem quite happy with the situation but the adventuring community is known to be more dynamic and volatile so the change in its personnel in the Expedition is not unusual.
Colwin took up recruiting about a month ago and has been much more lax in what he has let "slip" which has both increased interest and decreased efforts to compete. It seems the expedition has had several conflicts with other organized forces in the area and is only as stable as it is due to their well established defenses. A few river pirates and smuggles have made moves into the region but simply found it better to either infiltrate or rob the expedition than to try and create their own forays into the area. There seem to be other, larger and likely political, forcers watching but nothing has publicly come of it yet. Corwin has gotten a bit of a reputation as one who is familiar with the underbelly of society and suspected of using his position to influence who gets what position when they reach the expedition's base camp. He is mostly a local logistics coordinator but spends much of his time trying to get more adventurers willing to risk exploring for the Expedition.
May 21, 2023 10:01 pm
Best to take the indirect direct approach

Athria slips out of the tavern after getting her answers and steps onto the docks. With the pirates and smugglers thirsty for Expedition spoils, there might be an opportunity to make a good impression. Athria heads further onto the piers, hatching a plan to slip into the shadows and find when the next attempt to steal from the Expedition will strike. And when she comes to their aid she can provide an example of her skills without needing to plead or boast. She looks for a spot that will be prime eavesdropping territory as the small boats and the men that crew them continue their work
May 21, 2023 11:37 pm
Though roughly familiar with docks Arhria regrets not knowing more as she is reminded that the docks are a living and changing environment different from the city streets and alleys she is more familiar with. Still she picks a easy enough "disguise" of an interested out of towner to wander the docks and listen in to many conversations.

After getting bruskly told off a couple of times she moves out of the way to a dead zone she notices where handlers and cargo have little traffic but is still close enough to watch the docks. Mostly ignoring the bruisy dock hands, or at least ignoring their basic activities she watches for changes or odd occurrences. Most likely few of the actual pirates and smuglers pull in to dock here, especially at the same time. The city seems invested in the expedition so are likely trying to keep their end open to the increased business.

Still Athria finally finds a couple of guys who dont quite belong. Interesting enough the pair soon make their way to Corwin, who is recognized from the description she has collected, for a brief discussion. before wandering off. Other than the pair that stood out there are a few buildings and loading crews Athria things may have ties to the criminal element. Nor from anything she can pin point but only the buildings proximity to certain city features and the crews casual way that there always seems to be at least one of the crew in or nearby certain areas.

Do you want to follow the odd pair, approach Corwin, or look into the suspected criminal crew/buildings. If you try something risky give me a test check (2d6) or with advantage(3d6) for appropriate skills/trades
May 22, 2023 6:45 am
The odd pair seems to be the best source of finding out more about Colwin and what's around

Flattening down her head crest and squinting her eyes, Athria tries to diminish any sources of colour on her and drops down low. With deliberate movements she blends into the shadowed recesses of the docks and follows the pair Colwin spoke to, interested in just what things he's up to and if it leads to an advantage for her to get to the Expedition

Athria manages t shadow the two who stalk off in an iritated manor into the warehouse district. She follows the pair to a smaller warehouse where they pause to look around, their first real precaution, before pulling out a key and unlocking a door then slipping inside the building.

Athria looks over the building and nots that the city block it is built on has several small buisness and suspects that not all the "independant" structures are truely seporate. She is has seen multile times the benefits of having adjacent properties conneted out of sight. Even to the oint that minor "removations" allowed the gangs to add secret passages between multiple connected structures before sellling or renting the building space between the pwo main points of interest. Looking over the city block she feels this may be one such area. But this does her no good, just something to remember.

Fortunate for her many fail to think about what others can do when establishing cecurity and only think "what would I do to break in here" Chuckling she sees a couple of options. She can simply walk over and pick the lock, as she sees no other external doors to the building the pair enterd. The buiding the two entered has a couple of windows on the 2nd floor and one is in an alley between the warehouse block and the next. The alley also offers possible acdess to the roof. Though the verticle walls may pose a problem to others Athria is confident in her claws alowing her to scalke the structure easily. The are also the sewers, but those may have other complications and she does not have the time to properly scout them now.

Athria smiles to herself, getting a better sense of Colwin's associates and a familiarity of their methods, at least to her own preconceptions. She sees the lock and is confident in her abilities, but it seems too obvious, too human. The alley and the wall is much more her style: it would give her vantage points without having to commit to going through a door that she has no knowledge of what lies beyond. With a quick check of her surroundings and the security of her things she drops to all fours and scurries through the the alley, before finding a secure grip on the wall. She heads for the window, intending to look through and decide whether to enter through it, or continue to the roof...

Making more noise than she would have liked Athria reaches the window in teh alley and peering through a small crack sees a dark room. She could rend the cheap wooden shutters but a simple thin blade lookes like it could undo the latch. Ensureing her place on the wall is secure Athria slips a thin knife between the wooden slats and soon the window is open to her. She quickly slips into the room and closes the shutters but does not latch them, yet.

The room is dark and dusty but other than a few scraps of wood, old pieces of furniture perhaps, is empty. Athria does not hear any movement or talking at his time and hopes she was not too loud in her slailing the wall.
OOC:
A standard test is 2d6 and any roll with at least on 5 is good. In situations where you have to to prepare or perform you can focus allowing a success on any roll with at least one 4 or higher. Your roll of two 3's would be a fail but I decided you got up the wall but were simpy noisy while doing so. I do this some time when the fail is not realy a stopping point.

Go ahead an roll a stealth and let me know your plan.

Athria seems convinced there is definitely something going on. A space like this should be a prime place for good or business, being so dusty and abandoned would make no sense unless the real money was being made somewhere else. Trying to assuage herself against her previous noise she wraps the cloak around tightly and begins to move between shadows, looking for footprints or scratches that indicate a passage through this space and where they might be.

Athria moves silently across the room and eases the door open. Pausing to listen she hears muffled voices from down stairs. Looking along the corridor she can tell that several rooms are in use, but only those not on the outside of the building. To the far left is a set of stairs heading down. The hall has 3 rooms on the outside, Athria is in the end corner room, and 2 on the inside. Nothing can be heard upstairs, and the conversation downstairs sounds to be from another room as it is muffled and has at least 3 speakers.
May 24, 2023 7:24 pm
Of the opinion that paper and goods can be picked up any time, but a conversation can't be heard after the fact, Athria tries to slip unnoticed downstairs to where the muffled voices can be heard. All this clandestine effort gives her a rush of excitement like the old days and she struggles not to let her head crest flare in anticipation
May 25, 2023 1:41 am
Still moving silently Athria reaches the stairs and looking down sees some light spilling from a doorway with the door hanging loosely about 20 feet from the foot of the stairs. Descending the stairs she has to go on all fours as she feels the stairs shift and bow under her weight. As she creeps along she begins hearing snippets of the conversation, which seems more like a lecture now with only occasional mummers form two of the voices..

A: ... discuss .. important matter ... duty. ... demands souls ... vessels for his power .... Tell me ....prisoners for ....?

B: ... leader. We have ... prisoners, carefully ...... Their ... will be a fitting tribute.

C: The captives are bound within the holding chambers. Their energy is strong, pulsating with the essence our lord craves.

A:How many have you secured?. Have you determined the order in which they will be offered to our lord? The timing and sequence must be meticulously planned for maximum effect.

B: We have only been able to get 2. The city guard here is very thorough since our last gathering. Corwin insists he can only divert a few at a time without suspicion falling on him. And he insists the other chapter growing in the Expedition needs vessels as well.
However, one of the prisoner possesses upstairs has a unique resonance that will please our lord. We believe the ritual should commence with the weaker captive, to awaken our lord so he may fully enjoy the better offering of the second vessel.

A: Your lack of effort to please the lord fills me with despair of you ever being welcomed fully into our lords grace. Only by furthering our lords plans will we pave the way to our ascendance!

(in unison): Hail the grey lord! God of undeath! Hail the eternal darkness!

After their chorus the sounds of furniture and feat moving can be heard coming from the room.

Once the conversation became clear Athria no longer felt that getting closer was a good idea and stopped just at the base of the stairs.
OOC:
Let me know if this is too dark for you
May 26, 2023 8:38 am
OOC: No this is fine for me, though a big twist right out the gate is fun!

Reptilian eyes going wide, Athria does her best to evade detection and head back upstairs. She knows there's prisoners and though this Expedition promises riches, she can't let innocent people get sacrificed to some dark deity. And living escapees may be able to create dissention and call Colwin into question, something she certainly isn't ready to do herself yet.

She thinks back to what she's seen so far and wonders where the best place for the prisoners to be kept might be, remembering the conversation about them being upstairs
May 26, 2023 12:49 pm
The two rooms to the interior showed recent use by the disturbed dust on the floor. With only 2 they are easy to check. The higes of the first door start to squeek causing Athria to hiss in anoyance as she gets it just open enough to look inside and easily spots 2 bodies tied up with the rope binding their hands pullling them up to the tips of their toes as they hang there despontdnatly. At the sound of the door one looks away while the other glared at the doorway.
May 27, 2023 6:24 am
Without much time to hang around, Athria's sword comes free of her sheath to slice through the ropes and release the prisoners. The sound of the hinges already gives her pause that this has become a desperate escape and she hisses quietly to them both.

"Gather your strength and follow if you want to live"
May 27, 2023 4:38 pm
The resolute man lands on his feet but the other crumples to the floor, making a slight noise from the fall and he whimpers. The stalwart man glares and the other and snaps at him to stay quiet as he helps him to his feet before grabbing s few things from the floor on the other side of the room Lets go he says, grabbing the other man by the arm and looking to Athria to lead.

Athria has been listening at the door and has not heard anyone coming up the stairs and prays that the fools fall did not alert the cultists to their activities.
May 28, 2023 11:59 am
Nodding with appreciation of the resolute man and his endurance in these circumstances, she keeps her sword ready and opens the door. With these humans in tow any acrobatics to the windows or roof is out, she'll need to find a door on this level and see if it can be opened. With careful steps she moves out of the room and glances quickly in both directions.
May 29, 2023 1:28 am
All is clear in the hall. Turning you gesture to the humans to follow and they move to join you. Turning back to seek for options you see 2 skeletons open the next rooms door and step out. Athria stares at them as they gaze in the groups direction, then charge with a clacking and clattering sound.

Athria sees the skeletons and curses. Men, with their limited senses and prejudices she knows, she can confuse or distract. The dead she can't deceive or hide, there's merely hard bone against scales, and she prefers a situation that gives her every advantage. But there's nothing for it, she's not going to abandon these prisoners, unless her own life is in danger so she raises her sword as they charge. She drops low, using her mass and her tail to knock one to a stumble before hitting it with a strong blow of her sword. After that she keeps low and circles them to keep them at bay...

"If you have any experience in fighting, now's a good time. Or else just find a way out of here!"

Athria avoids the skeletons attack and dodges into the room slaming the door shut. Without a lock or anything blulky to bar it she has to hold it against the skeletons attempts to force it open. A thun allerts her to the arival of a knife thrown across the room by th man who is now scrambling out the window. Athia slams the knife deep into the wooden door frame before rushing after the man and scaling her way down the building.
The coward has fled and the otheman climbs to his feet grmbling about abandoning your resuer before following Athia down a side alley to another street before moving to the main streets.

Once you are a couple blocks away and feeling safer the man turns into a halling run tavren and brings you along. Finding a couple seats in a corner he orders a couple of drinks and meals, waiting for privacy before talking further. Thans for getting me out of there. I need to make myself scarce for a bit and can't take you with me. and he look apologetic about this. I hope you have better luck in your ventures than I have been having recently. What brought you into that building anyhow?
May 31, 2023 11:24 am
With the adrenaline pumping after the narrow escape, Athria tears into the offered food with gusto. She nods her appreciation to Bjorne and nods her head at his statement.

"Of course you want safety after what happened, and this place seems dangerous to you. I was investigating a man I was to seek employment from, and took to following some men he was talking to."

Athria thinks back to the words of the men before her impromptu rescue attempt.

"Do you remember them talking about their plans? Who they were looking to sacrifice you to?"

I was having a drink with a couple of adventurers,. . . . names of "Falcon" and . . . I guess I never caught the other guys name. It was mostly regular sotrries you know. Then Falcon says he knows a place for a bit of gambling so we head there and I get knocked over the head.
I heard them talking in orcish with what I assume was a big orc. Deep voice and some grunting. You know. Anyway they mostly talked about preparations and some other agent in anoth location. Seems to have a bit of a power strugle going on in their group. They only talked about their "Lord" and promises of eternal "glory" of becoming undead themselves.
shudder Ony it seems they are looking to become greater undead, you know the smart ones. Liches and vampires and the like. Seems they need to earn the privilage by building up their forces by creating undead and the stronger the body in life the better undead they can make. So they have been targeting adventurers ex military and mercenaries.

Athria shakes her head

"It's smart I guess, picking off the people in dangerous work, who no one expects to come home anyway. Won't be easy to take them down

Taking a sip of her drink, Athria looks over to Bjorne and clinks their mugs.

"Hope you have somewhere to go home to, or work far away from here. I don't think it'll be safe for anyone who can point the finger at them. I think I'll stick around, and find the perfect place to sink a knife into their back."

You chat for a while and you can tell that though the man has held up well amost being turned into some kind of ghoul has shaken him. Finaly finishing his meal the man thanks you again. If you need any help just swing by the Steel Falcon hall. It is a mercenary group. We only have a litle office here but I will make sure they have your name. Show thm this and tell them Bjorne gave it to you. The man passes you a small steel coin with a feather on one side and a anvil on the other.

After the an leaves you finally catch the eye of someone you suspect has been watching you for some time.

The most inconvenient thing about humans is that they all are look completely identical. Those flat round faces, devoid of individuality, covered in bare skin and tufts of fur in random places, almost impossible to distinguish one from the other. Forthemore, the lack of a tail and inexpressive body language doom attempts to read their emotions to failure. All these facts definitely made the task more difficult, but the difficulties did not frighten Aashas. If Uallas did that, I can do it too - she thinks, - and if my friend needs me, I'll find out how to help.
In general, there are not many creatures who she could call her friends, so she did not think twice when Uallas invited her to join the Expedition. Besides, she had heard something about it, and the opportunity to explore something new was attractive in itself.

Anyway, two cities were behind, and this one should be where she would finally find a way to join the Expedition. The hardest part is done - now she knows the name of the recruiter. Of course, she needs to find him and somehow distinguish him from other people, but this is not a big deal now. Remembering what Uallas told about politics she decided to talk less and listen more until she figured out how things work, and the tavern was a good place to gather some information first.

Another lizardfolk entering in the company of a human (probably male, but she couldn't say for sure) immediately caught her attention. It was impossible to determine what they were talking about, but for Aashas far more important was the opportunity to meet to someone of her kind here. Not wanting to interfere with the conversation, she waited until the human left.

Shhh, - she says, moving quickly towards the other lizard once the human is far enough away. Perhaps she should have started with an introduction, or at least a greeting, but she forgot how communication actually works - Don't think I've been stalking you, just a couple of questions. How long have you been in this city?

Athria pockets the coin and lets the man go on his way, trying to remember the face and his instructions should she want some safer work. She must be slipping a little for she didn't notice the other lizardfolk enter, and unlike the humans there was no obvious scent to alert her. When Aashas sits down there's a moment of surprise and a flaring of her crest, bright green against her black scales. Her mouth opens for a moment but she gets control of her reaction and shakes her head a little, calming herself. She takes a moment to observe the newcomer, staying completely still. She's a little unsure of what to think. Her egg having been found and sold off, her only experiences with her own kind were her clutchmates, and they were dispersed fairly early on in her life. She doesn't know if she should feel kinship or caution, but decides to be wary until she knows more, especially with the secrets she's just discovered.

"If stalking you were, I must admit you do it well. I arrived today. I've been finding my feet you might say."

She doesn't know the custom but offers a clawed hand in the human manner.

well this is a game to help people get familiar with things but a week is plenty of time. I will move both of you to the expedition base tomorrow unless your characters want to do something specific before.
IRL some times causes hiccups in posting but as a shared game should not stop the story entirely. Because that will actually kill a game.

Athria and Aashas chat for a while before finding a inn to stay the night. The next morning they find and talk with Corwin, arranging passage on the boat that sets off before noon.

Corwin
They are needing people for a bit of everything so all that is requires for free ride to town now is to help protect the boat on route. We have been having a bit of river pirate trouble lately. and he shrugs

Hank
The river boat captain is glad of the extra guard and you set off for a couple of leisurely days floating down the river. You do spot some other boats on the river but no pirates. Hank does not seem concerned If they attack everyone then they eventually end up with a boat full of mercenaries hidden under tarps paid by the merchants who get together.

You arrive safely at the expedition Base (moving story there)
