Kent Library

It's a sunny late spring afternoon when you roll up on the library building. There's a local sheriff car parked nearby, the lights cycling blue-and-red. A deputy is sitting in the car with the windows open. He's watching two people who are sitting on the steps of the library.

The two people sitting on the library steps have an odd skin tone, kind of inhumanly pink like a bad shade of lipstick. Their heads are shaved or possibly bald. They wear white thigh-length robes over white trousers. They are barefoot. They seem to be enjoying the sunlight. They're sitting there silently looking at each other.

What do you do?

Janus grabs the 9-45LCR forms and a clipboard and heads over to the local sheriff.

"Just need your signature here, and initial here and here."

He hopes the clipboard-effect will bamboozle the local authorities into keeping their noses out of things. Nothing worse than having to deal with the police as well as an incursion.

From there he heaves out the mapper drones and walks past the "visitors" thinking Lili or Chuck will do a better job interviewing them. He sets the mapper drones down at the opening of the library, flips on the pre-calibration sequence, tucks the link tablet under his shoulder, and sets them free. As the drones head in he begins a perimeter check outside the library on foot.

He hopes in the next fifteen or twenty minutes he'll have a good idea of how big of an incursion this is and that the drones don't cause too much disruption.

Lili double-checks her gear harness and bag; C4, grenades, shoddy-ass shotty, and enough space to grab something worth an extra buck. She takes a moment to look at the sky above the library; it always felt wrong that these things happened even on peaceful, sunny days. Hated that she didn't have a change of clothes, either; tie and blazer it is. She took the bandages off her head, at least.

While Janus does his thing, she turns to Joe and Chuck. "Looks like Janus has the drones and pigs covered. One of you wanna help me chat up these..." She pauses. "Uh, sunburned-looking dudes?"

Assuming at least one of them will, she tentatively approaches the ... visitors. "So, uh, library get a dress code all of the sudden?" She says to one of them.

The man looks up at her. He squints a little in the sunlight.

"Are you ok?" he asks. Lili realizes two things: (a) he's freaked out by her burn scar; (b) he doesn't speak English. But she understands him.

Both of these are not new things to experience around an incursion. (a) is not new, generally. (b) is specific to incursions. Confirmation, there, of what's happening.

Chuck follows Lili's lead and checks his gear. Lili interrupts his check asking to talk to the sunburned dudes. He says, "Yeah, let's see if we can get anything out of them" and walks with her to the steps. Chuck smiles at Lili's dress code crack. He leans closer to her and whispers, "Well, at least these guys don't smell like those weird things we found outside the water treatment plant last month."

Chuck then addresses the refugees, "Where are you from and what are you running from?"

Janus circles the block. Historic houses (a plaque on one of them reads "1645" with an illegible name in smaller font), a lot that's so overgrown he can't tell whether it's vacant, and at the back of the library is a parking lot.

Another cop is here. She is taking photographs of the back doors of the library, which have been decorated with so much CAUTION and POLICE tape. She looks around at Janus. "This is a scene," she says, "it's a closed scene. Did you notice the car over there?" Janus had walked right past it. Glancing back he sees a standard issue sheriff's patrol car with its lights going. No obvious sign that he's in a crime scene. No other cops, either.

"We're from Novydom," says the man who spoke to Lili. His companion nods. "This is?" he turns and looks up at the front of the building. "Kent Library. Huhh. Letters are weird. ... Hey, what ... do you speak Seree?"
Jan 30, 2023 2:25 am
Janus puffs out his cheeks and lets out a long sigh of frustration.
This will complicate things.
A lot.

"Right." He nods and backs away a step or two. Not an apologetic nod. Not backing away with any shame or guilt, though.

He then flicks open a walkie-talkie. "Joe, looks like the police have a closed scene here in the back. Maybe you can come…sniff around a bit anyhow."

He then smiles at the officer and waits and watches. He figure someone got themselves dead at the back exit. Funny, Miss Flowers didn’t mention it. In that moment of waiting, Janus absently taps on the edge of the tablet. Why do those mapper drones always seem to take forever?

He hits refresh one more time.

"Are you ok?" he asks.
"Lost a fight with a hairdryer," she says. Another surprised person, another made-up joke about how it happened. You really did have to make your own fun.

"Novydom, ah-huh..." She says. "Never been. Don't speak that language, but we understand each other, so that works for me. Heard you had some trouble with ... gods, was it? We're problem-solvers, so help us help you." Then, to Chuck only: "Never can get the fun-and-safe candyland incursion, can we?"
Jan 30, 2023 9:09 am
Joe quietly joins Lili and Chuck to check on the refugees. He lets the girl take over, though he can't but wonder if whoever these people are will understand the jokes. Well, he doesn't really, though those weird things outside the water treatment plant... the thought of that smell still makes him sick...

He takes a good look at the refugees. He doesn't know much about religions but the sight of the pink people reminds him of eastern monks from the movies: shaved, robes and barefoot. He wonders if there is a relationship. Probably not. He's not good at these things.

While he is lost in his thoughts, mostly fantasizing about the "monks'" martial prowess and flying kicks, he gets the message from Janus. He picks up the walkie-talkie and grunts back as a vague and general acknowledgment as he starts to sneak around the building and sniffing, making sure to go the opposite way Janus took, hoping he can get inside whatever the police closed as Janus distracts them.
OOC:
Would sneaking be Prowess or insight? I may had picked the wrong stats xD

OOC:
Prowess for sneaking. Strong hit.
Joe circles the block counterclockwise as Janus went clockwise. He passes around the front, side, and back of a large white Methodist church on a fine green lawn with towering elm trees. The trees and the building have been there quite a while. On a whim, he cuts across the parking lot behind the church and heads straight to a gap in a wooden fence along the side of the lot. There's a certain smell from that direction ...

Stepping through the gap he steps into a line of pine trees that are planted right against the fence, and almost trips on a bleeding pink body that is dressed in very torn-up white garments. The body is torn up about as bad as the robe. The eyes are open. It's not immediately apparent whether the body is breathing, but first guess is "no."

Glancing up from the body, through the pine branches, Joe sees a parking lot with a couple of older cars, a book return bin, a sheriff patrol car with cycling lights, and the back of the library - he's sure about that because there's a sign that says Kent Library. He also sees Janus, who appears to be talking to someone out of his view in an alcove where the back doors probably are.

Joe probably can't be seen where he is.

This part always kind of freaks Chuck out. It's like watching a foreign movie with voice over actors. The man's lips are moving but what Chuck hears doesn't line up with the motions of his mouth.

"No, we speak English here, but we won't have trouble understanding each other. You'll get used to it. Did you come out of this building or from somewhere else?"
Jan 30, 2023 3:26 pm
"Yeah, we came outta there," says the so-far silent friend of the man who's puzzled by fonts. "Lotsa books in there, huh? Library. That makes sense. Yeah, we were at the library in Novydom and walked through the doors to the reading room and instead we were in this building here. We'd like to stay."

"FEMA Agent 211-2." Janus says matching the disinterested. Playing it cool. "Just a bit of recon before we go in. Looks like you've got your work cut out for you."

He nods his head at the taped door, daring her to talk about an active investigation. The civilian-incursion paperwork is gnarly, Janus has seen the protocols FEMA dumps on the local police. "If this is your first rodeo, make sure to get those photo worksheets double-signed by evidence control. Before and after download. FEMA pencil pushers are twitchy about chain-of-evidence."

Seeing Janus talk to someone, Joe holds off reporting back for a moment. He tries once or twice to figure out what is going on before turning his attention back to the pink body. He checks for vital signs where he expects them to be found (you never know with these aliens) and, lacking any obvious evidence of life, kicks the corpse, just to be sure.

But it is the smell of the blood that attracts him the most. He tries to figure out if the refugee left a trail as he escaped from whatever wounded them or any other clue to where and how they were mortally wounded

The "corpse" twitches and spasms and moans when Joe kicks it. Seems like it's not dead.

"Uh ..." the woman says to indicate that she doesn't understand what Janus is on about. "Right. I'm going to need you to leave the scene, mkay?"

"If you'd like to stay here, Novydom must be worse than LA," she says. "We'll uh, see what we can do about that." She didn't really recall the procedure for this; that was more in the wheelhouse of first and second command. "Tell us a bit about Novydom, will you? We-" She says, gesturing to herself and Chuck, "-might find ourselves there whether we like it or not."

Janus tried not to let it sting, the fact that this officer didn't care. Joe would probably figure out better information anyhow.
With a weak salute, he turns and heads back to the library's front door.
OOC:
Whenever it feels right (I don't want to disrupt the other exchange), Janus will return and announce...
"Mapper drones are busted, again. Let's gear up and get going. Without a map, this will take forever." Then he throws the tablet into the car seat and starts sorting his gear with practiced efficiency.

trying to get a feel for how quick each of us wants this game to flow. I have a post outstanding to @CESN for *less than a day* which feels reasonable to me. I'd like it if we each could check in and post at least every other day or so.

"Yeah," says the pink man. Lili notices he's burlier than the other one, and has a thick scar across the back of his right forearm. Like he got cut by something. The other one sits quietly watching the conversation, with an expression like he's ready to interject if there's something important comes up. "So, yeah. Novydom is like a center, a trade port? In the river canyon. Yeah, the whole city is up on stilts in the river. And there's ... rules. About what we can say and do. There are things we just. Don't. Talk about." He looks with some anxiety at the other one, who still has that nervous-ready-to-jump-in expression. The other one nods slowly, almost comfortingly, as if: Good, you didn't say anything wrong.

Chuck glances at Lili, then looks back to the bigger man and says, "Well, you're not in Novydom now, so you can speak freely to us. We won't tell anyone."
OOC:
I can post once a day. Weekends will be a little slower.
