Finding the Way

Jan 30, 2023 2:37 pm
OOC:
@Yuun your journey begins here
The wagons trundle along over the rough trail being shaped from the rough countryside. Consisting of 8 large wagons reinforced with magics and pulled by large tailless salamanders and over 30 people the group has had a rough time following the trail, blazed by earlier wagons, to the expedition.
As this is not the first group from the nation's, to the east of the expedition, it only has a minimum contingent of guards and the odd adventurer paired up and used as scouts. Much of the travel has been a mix of exhausting drudgery and occasional frantic activity fighting of beats and the occasional bandit group.
The Basecamp should be reached within the next several days if the cleric to the good of travelers is correct and you are excited to be done with the trail.
Jan 30, 2023 2:45 pm
Yogitus had the unfortunate fate of having the worst of partners.
Rupert
Rupert lacks even the bar of courtesy, compassion, discipline, and practices in personal hygiene. Having offended almost everyone in the group he had gotten you relegated to patrolling the wagon trains back trail.
Your job, as Rupert refuses to do anything but keep up with the wagons, is to stay a couple of minutes being the main group and watch for signs of being watched or followed
OOC:
Give a basic into and description then tell me how you are handling Rupert.
Jan 30, 2023 4:16 pm
At the back of the expedition, Yogitus watches as Rupert kicks a few stones, complaining yet again. Yogitus draws his hood closer around his neck and takes in a deep breath of the countryside, the dust from the salamander wagons, and Rupert's distinct odor. A mantra for patience comes to mind, and he slowly recites it to himself as he takes his steps in behind the expedition line.

"Gobinday, Mukanday, Duaaray, Aaparay..." Yogitus recites quietly.

As he finishes the mantra, he turns to thoughts of the journey thus far, Master Buan, and the history of Ki. Rupert spits in his path, and Yogitus wonders how such an expedition will take him to his goals, especially with men like Rupert in tow.

Yogitus begins the mantra again, recognizing that patience often solves a problem or, at least, delivers solutions. At least on this day, he is able to enjoy a nice walk.
Jan 31, 2023 2:12 am
Yogitus is glad that the dust from the wagons and beast rarely reaches them at their remote scouting. Rupert insists on staying close to the wagons but has been threatened with no food if they wagon master catches sight of him closer than 150 yards. So your compromise is to follow as close as possible while staying to cover and resting for a minute or two if you get too close. You reason this should satisfy your posts requirements.

One such time as you are about to move closer and are about to step from the cover of the small grove you have been watching and resting in a flash of movement catches your eye.

Give me a standard test to catch any details on what caught your eye and explain your next steps. You need to be back up in sight of the wagon train every half an hour, so about 15 minute from now.
Jan 31, 2023 3:49 pm
The flash is so quick that Yogitus misses any details, only noting the speed of moment being quick. As he watches the nearby trees and dry overgrown grass, he sits still for a moment considering whether the flash may have been a bird or rabbit. He rests on the decision that there is no sense in assuming safety.

Yogitus motions to Rupert.

"Rupert. It's time we start heading back to check in with the wagons." Yogitus looks around another time. "And let's keep quiet for a little bit. I may have saw something."

As you move to head back realize Rupert isn't moving. Turning you see the man at spear point a few feet away.
kobold
The figure holding the spear is a 3 foot scaled figure. A kobold. Moments later a second, then third kobold steps into view holding their spears ready but not yeat attacking.
Feb 1, 2023 6:57 pm
Yogitus observes the creatures as they emerge from the brush, joining one that has tipped it's spear at Rupert's throat. While no worse for wear, the man seems surprised and nervous.
OOC:
I rolled to notice anything unique for narrative purposes. I've chosen the details below.
Yogitus remains confident. Three short lizards don't seem too difficult to handle, and they haven't outright attacked. They may be more interested in robbing them than killing. On the other hand, the lizards pushed out of the brush one at a time, meaning there is a chance that three is just the beginning. Either way, the wagons need to be warned of potential threats and it'd be best not to report that Rupert had been slain, at least for Yogitus' own reputation.

Yogitus adjusts his stance lower, but ready, as to look directly into the lead lizard's gaze. Like tea, find strength in hot water.

"Hello friends. We mean you no ill will and are merely traveling through. Perhaps you saw our expedition earlier?"
OOC:
Not sure how you want to direct any combat scenario as the GM. I'm not looking to initiate it unless I have to, but I don't know if I should explain what I would like to attempt then wait for you to tell me to roll advantage, disadvantage, standard and describe the results. Or do you want me to take the initiative and roll what I feel and describe what I do if successful?

My thought was to potentially experiment with being a changeling. Can I instantly mimic a kobold now that I've encountered one via Mimic? Or would you like to have some constraint on this ability to keep things less chaotic?

The kobolds vary slightly in color, from ddep red to so dark it is nearing black but still red in hue, size by a few inches, and horn placement, style, and size. As you speak a larger more muscular kobold of midnight black scales steps out bearing a large and heavy looking shield. Nodding to the others they take a half step back and Rupert scrambles behind you. The shield bearer glances disdainfully at the cowering Rupert with a snort or contempt.

Kobold Shield Bearer
Turning to you the sheild bearer speaks in a hissing rumble We are aware of the expedition. We have no trouble with you but our lord wishes to speak with a representative. His anger and the actions of certain of your people grows You can come now and take the message our ancestor wishes you to take or go first to your base and return within 3 days.
Will you come now?
Feb 2, 2023 4:09 pm
Yogitus looks up to the large lizard before him, noting the obvious command he has over the smaller in the group and his look toward Rupert who now mutters curses to himself.

The expedition is surely going to be wondering what the hold up is. Yogitus thinks calmly and takes a breath. Rupert will surely stoke fears if he goes back to the caravan, leading to more violence distrust with these creatures. He is also a burden here. To fight a heavy stone is a waste of it's energy."

A slight breeze flows in water-like currents over the tall grass. Despite the roughness of the land and journey, there is beauty in this place. Yogitus sighs.

"Perhaps you'd allow both? This man can return to the expedition and inform them of my departure. I will come with you." Yogitus points to Rupert. If you send me to the expedition, I assure you they will leave Rupert and your message behind."

Kobold Shield Bearer
Very well. The kraven thing may leave and you can come with us. We will accompany you to within sight of the wagons so they will know you are with us.
Nodding to the others he snaps a few words in a gutteral hissing language and the kobolds form up. Rupert makes haste as the full size of the kobold squad is revealed to include 8 regular kobolds, the shield bearer and another who looks to be some kind of mage.
Walking with the kobolds you march quickly behind Rubert and in a few minutes catch sight of him scrambling up to the wagons waving. A few moments later other figures are seen and you wave to them and they wave back as teh scouts all return to the wagons and form up. Turning you head off with the kobolds and see the wagons start back up, resuming their own journey.
OOC:
I will get another post in later. let me know if you have any questionf for the kobolds.
Feb 3, 2023 3:49 pm
Yogitus follows the lizards, unsurprised that the wagons would continue on so quickly. Do not be dragged done by weight you should not carry. A few of the warriors seem to be looking at Yogitus, eyeing his movements carefully. Even so, Yogitus feels a sense of calm and is glad to be rid of Rupert.

He looks to the leader who uses his size to push a path through the grasses and brush of the landscape, taking them on a path off the road the wagons had been using.

"Is the journey far," Yogitus asks. "And I'm called Yogitus, btw. What should I call you?"

Kobold Scale Sorcerer
The robed figure answers You may address me as Herald. It is a close translation of my title and your throat cannot sound out my name properly. I am glad to see a person of courage and reason. Our ancestor has already talked with another of the guards escorting wagons to your base but sensed the object of his desires come into focus then vanish.
His anger was great and he has called in more tribes. He suspects some from your expedition were involved but has yet to ascertain if the pact was broken.
Here he pauses But he has also to date not received any tribute from your people. He cares little for most things your people are after but he is a dragon. If you can convince your leaders to send a portion of the wealth of rare metals and gems that are recovered this would calm his ire at your people. The other groups are openly hostile or ignore us and our ancestor. Soon they shall pay for their arrogance.
You walk for about half an hour, veering more west than north. Entering a swamp you are glad you have a guide as many of the paths are below the water surface and hard to follow as floating vegetation hides much in the water.
There is our goal and Herald points to a low hill in the distance.

Suddenly the water to your left erupts as several tentacles burst out of the water and lash out to grasp several of the kobolds including Herald and yourself. All but one of the tentacles are dodged, and you get the sense the kobolds are not too surprised at the attack. They quickly begin hacking at the tentacle that is pulling one of their comrades deeper into the bog where a mas rises with opening maw. It's intent is clearly to consume the unlucky victim.

The creature vaguely resembles an octopus but has rough skin like an alligator and a massive mouth atop its head with multiple eyes around its body. The main body is 15' away in obviously deeper water but the tentacles continue to grasp at the group.

The speed at which the lizards move to address the correct tentacle is impressive. Yogitus, having no blade, moves into position to defend the soldiers against the remaining tentacles. They monstrous octopus thrashes its limbs about trying to catch hold of another victim.

One tentacle comes toward Yogitus, he prepares his fists. Water, driving force of nature. He takes on a solid stance and attacks in attempt to drive it back.

The limb abruptly halts and recoils as Yogitus thrusts a fist directly into its side.

The lizards behind him continue to target and hack at the nearby limb. Yogitus adopts a fluid stance for movement and evasion. Flow, the paths are multitudes.

Yogitus watches as the lizard behind him is struck from his feet by the tentacle that just swung by. He takes a deep breath and adopts a firm stance, attacking the tentacle holding the other lizard twice, first a solid palm strike followed by a much stronger fist strike in the same location, but both attacks slide off the skin as the tentacle writhes away.

He cartwheels back into a fluid stance, setting up to evade once again.

Yogitus calls out to Herald. "If we focus on freeing your warrior, we may have a chance to get out of it's reach. Unless you have a better idea."

Herald
With all kobolds recovered the kobolds begins to withdraw as quickly as they can and after another minute of frantic dodging and deflecting tentaces you are able to elave the beast behind. Herald thanks you for your assistance and you chat a bit tmore before reaching the hill in the midle of the swamp.

Once you set foot on the solig ground of the large hill you realize this is no small band of kobolds. Estimating based on the camps you see there are likely several hundred kolbolds camped at the base of the hill. In addition you see several groups of lizardfolk(humanoid lizards typically amphibious) and Draconians with various dragon aspects, such as wings, claws, and tails, besides teh common scales.

The trail you folow winds though several camps, with Kobolds only glancing at you when they see you, then up the hill. Nearing the top you spot a large cavern surrounded by piles of rocks and dirt leading you to believe thie cave was excavated not too many seasons ago. At the mouth of the cave Herald instruct you to enter but warns No lights if you want to live.

The tunnel is steep, wide, and strait enough at first that the lack of additional light is not an issue. However the slight curve of the tunnel eventually puts you in near total darknes before you realize there are "Star Grub", a small worm like creature that gives off faint light in darkness, on the ceiling. With the "stars" lighting you way you continue decending until you reach a large cavern. The ceiling is too high to light much of the cavern floor but you are able to discern the cave floor is very uneven with mounds well over 20 though the size is hard to guage due to the poor light.

As you come to a stop and silence fills the cavern you notice a faint rhythmic low and slow sound of wind. With a clatter of stone a massive form shifts in the dark and there are two eye staring at you.

As you stare into the eyes you feel your mind drift over your past life and after a moment (?) you blink and the eyes are gone. In your head you hear/remember a voice
I shall give you a 'Quest' and mission. The mission is for you to remind those at the expedition that there are powerful forces tied to this region. The Infinite Tower has been revealed and may be tied to these schemes. The quest is is for me. If you can find and secure the Dragon Pulse for me I will reward you. Complete the mission or suffer, the quest is yours if you like. The Scaled Seer can answer your questions. You may leave. As your mind clears you feel a slight throbbing on your left forearm.

Stumbling only a bit at first you make your way back up the tunnel and out into the night sky. You must have been inside for some time.
As you follow the trail down the hill you pass a torch and using it light look at your arm to find a new mark. You are greeted by Herald at the base of the hill.
