A Bitter Pill To Swallow

The City of Graybridge

The City of Graybridge
Aging, cracking facades, flickering lights illuminating out-of-date ads in the thundering rain, sirens in the distance giving hints of crime, death and injury just barely far enough away to allow them to be ignored.
Graybridge is not a pretty place at the best of times, and this dark, wet October is far from the best of times. The old, ruined streets are littered with dirt, with cheap, broken Halloween decorations that didn't even last the month they were made for, with garbage that nobody bothers to pick up. Seemingly neverending rain has been soaking the city's people to the bone all month, discouraging anyone from stepping a foot outside if they don't absolutely have to.
This Wednesday turned out to be one of the worst in regards to the rain. Ice cold drops of water hammering down in a heavy, constant, neverending cascade. It's no wonder the streets are all but abandoned this dark October evening...

Thin streaks of water flow underneath the small, high up window, betraying that its aged frame is no longer able to hold out the elements. Cold wind, carried through cracks in the walls and doors and windows is barely counteracted by an old, loud space heater in a corner of the room, trying to make a hospitable place for up to a dozen people for whom chairs have been placed in a loose circle in the middle of the room. But despite this optimistic estimate for attendance, ten minutes after the scheduled start of the weekly meeting for those affected by metahuman violence or activity, there are only two people gathered here in the cold church basement - David Draven and Augusta Ang.

Just as Dave is certain no one else is going to show up to this meeting anymore, the door opens and a familiar face leans into the room. Brock Kaminski is a regular attendant of the group whom Dave knows fairly well at this point. Most often, he shows up alone. Sometimes, he comes with his girlfriend Anna. Occasionally, she comes without him. The two metahumans are in a long-standing, mutually abusive relationship, which is always the reason for their presence here. Tonight, he seems to be alone, deep circles underneath his eyes from what looks like lack of sleep. "Uhm, Mr. Draven," the young man says. "There, uh, is something going on outside. Thought I'd tell you. You always tell me not to get involved in anything, y'know."
OOC:
Dave, the location you have available for these meetings is not very welcoming. What do you do to try and make it as inviting as possible? Which of your regulars were you hoping would show up today but hasn't?
Augusta, there was another event you were invited to this evening. What was it and why did you choose to come here instead?

Caine and Sloane Department Store

It was supposed to be Melissa's day off. Instead, Mike called her in a panic, letting her know that Paul and Emma had both called in sick and that he desperately needed someone to help with the store today. And so, here she is, soaked through, as was inevitable in the thunderstorm going on outside, hammering against the windows and shaking them with every perfectly simultaneous flash of lightning and clap of thunder.

Here she is, but no customers. Barely anyone is crazy enough to pick an evening like this one to go shopping, so the large, multi-storey department store is almost completely empty. Not that that means she can relax. Mike has decided that this is the perfect opportunity to start decorating the store for the Christmas season, which means plenty of decorations to hang up, stickers to attach to the windows and Christmas hats to place on mannequins while the same Christmas playlist as every year plays quietly over the speakers for her motivation.

Mike meanwhile is busy sorting through the seasonal wares, deciding which to put in the discounted section and which to keep at full price for now. In this work, he somehow always manages to stay at least somewhat close to Eva, who may not have an actual obligation to be here but who has nonetheless braved the rain to spend the evening between clothes, accessories, household wares, toys and many other things, most of which are far out of the price range set by her meager wage from working at Dark Lips.

While the store is mostly empty, Eva isn't quite the only customer. There's a couple searching for just the right toaster, a teenager eagerly comparing the labels on the boxes of liqueur-filled chocolate and one or two other rain-soaked people just wandering aimlessly as they're sheltering from the weather outside. A jingle at the door announces it opening for another customer, drawing automatically the involuntary attention of both Melissa and Eva. A man stumbles inside, swaying as if heavily drunk. He's dressed in a cheap plastic parka to protect against the rain, his face is slack and his eyes unfocused. As he moves further inside and the automatic door closes behind him, he stumbles into a small keychain display, knocking it over. If he notices, he shows no reaction and just continues wandering aimlessly inside.
OOC:
Melissa, what plans for the evening did you have to cancel to show up here? And why did you immediately regret agreeing to cover the shift once you arrived?
Eva, what did Mike promise you to try and get you to come into the store today? And why did you actually decide to come?

Melissa hated rain. It always ruined her hair and made it frizzy. She spent a considerable amount of time fussing with it using funds she didn't have, but appearances were important for the social climber. She hadn't been entirely happy with the coloring at the beauty salon she frequented. It was something new and it just wasn't working for her. She had just finished adding some highlight to said hair when she got the unexpected and unwelcome call from her boss.

"Ugh! Not today," she said to herself, blowing a stray strand away from her eyes. But her boss was a friend and she wouldn't dream of letting him down, but crap! She had wanted her day off to primp and preen for tonight. There was a book signing at Dark Lips Books, an author she adored would be signing copies of his new book and she wanted to look perfect for the occasion. Now she'd have to rush.

As soon as she pushed through the heavy department store doors she knew it was going to be a bad day. Smoothing her wet hair she glimpsed Eva from the corner of her eye. Ignoring the tiresome weirdo she headed toward the boxes of Christmas detritus ... she was not a fan of Christmas ... and that's when the drunk blundered in and knocked over the keychain display which was a pain in the ass to set up with all its small hooks and rings. She had no intention of getting between the drunk and whatever he was after so she went looking for Mike who was unfortunately probably somewhere near Eva.

"Well, I guess no one could resist the lovely Transylvanian weather tonight." the big man said, sighing as he rose to start folding the extraneous chairs. Old and rusty, probably bought as Army surplus after the Korean War, the chairs were bare metal that transmitted the bone-numbing cold of the basement but were still sturdy. "Hate that you had to drive all the way out here for a mostly no-show meeting, Augie." he stacked a few chairs against the inside wall of the basement meeting room, keeping them away from the infiltrating rain that left shit-brown stains along the walls where the rivulets ran their course. "Tho it does open the floor for a more 'how-to' conversation on meta-violence than 'how do you feel about it'...but that's not off the table either. Up to you..." he dumped a lurking spider out of a coffee mug and poured in a lava-hot cupful of the strong coffee he'd brewed to take the edge off the cold in the damp basement. Strong enough to permanently etch the inside of the borrowed "#1 Dad" mug a dirt brown, Dave inhaled the steam roiling from the coffee and readied for a drink when the knock at the door interrupted him.
"Better late than never, Kaminski. Dave looked over his coffee cup at Augusta, trying to gauge her feelings about Kaminski rolling in. "Come in, grab a seat. I brought donuts and coffee. Coffee's hot, donuts might not be... he wandered over to the high, rectangular basement windows, looking out into the bleak rainy night. "Good call not getting involved but what's going on outside?"

Augusta looks into her own coffee. Lots of sugar and lots "cream", a wretched container of white powder that spoke of a world without a soul or any connection to human comfort, a base approximation like robots trying to sing. She looks at the windows and the rain infiltrating inside. Did I give up a night at the museum for this? If I don't start going again, they'll stop inviting me. Sandra Peabody's color exploration is undoubtedly lit, too. She's had that inner argument every day for a month now. She's no closer to a resolution, but ...

She looks fondly at Dave. "You've helped me. I trust your instincts. I'm a monster, I know it, but I yearn for a kind of anonymous recognition. Like Spider-Man, or the Lone Ranger. 'Who was that stranger that helped us? She made a difference.' That kind of thing. You know, what I'd really--"

The door opens and Brock Kaminski comes in. She smiles at him. People always cheer up when she smiles, and that disarms their ire. She's protecting herself in some ways, from the naked vulnerability he oozes.

When he mentions some outside, she asks dumbly, "In this weather?" Concern creeps into her voice at the end of that, as she emotes that anything that allows a commotion to occur in the freezing rain must be singularly important.

Eva is wandering through racks of expensive women's clothing she'll never be able to afford when the man in the plastic parka stumbles into the store, and then stumbles into some display, making a spectacle of himself. The blonde's eyeliner-laden eyes find Mike to see what he's doing; he's actually the reason she's here. As much as Eva likes to window shop and dream about the things she'd buy if she actually had money beyond her paltry salary and the meager tips from the coffee bar at Dark Lips, it's been a long day at work and the woman wouldn't be here if there wasn't the promise of a late coffee and dessert. And that was the key -- Mike was okay. But The Pearl, around the corner? That cheesecake was to die for.

Eva, of course, had never had cheesecake before just a few months ago. There were a lot of things the tall, statuesque woman never had until a few months ago, and she always found it hard to say no to the finer things in life when they made rare appearances in hers. The cold weather has the former special operative in a plaid mini-skirt and dark wool leggings with a hole in one knee. Second-hand Dr. Martens, a black turtle neck that hugs her body in a way that dries out Mike's mouth, and an old denim jacket completes her look. She doesn't have a purse, but carries a worn canvas backpack over one shoulder. It's buckles jingle as she walks down the aisle towards the action, moving instinctively, moving without thought at all as to why.

The messy-haired young woman catches sight of Melissa as she moves and there's a look Eva doesn't know how to interpret. She's still not very good at reading certain social cues or emotions, and derision is one of them. The pretty blonde is looking for her manager, but Eva's already on the scene.

"Are you okay, sir?" she asks, blocking his path, looking past him at the merchandise all over the floor.
OOC:
Woohoo, we're launched! Also, this is a stand-in portrait. Will be changing eventually.

"If crime stopped for bad weather in Graybridge, we'd be almost as safe over here as in Annesburg," Brock comments in response to Augusta's comment. He shuffles into the room and shakes out his heavy rain jacket. He eyes the steaming hot cup of coffee in Dave's hand, then says, "There's some struggle going on out there. Looked like some girl getting mugged."
He walks up to the table Dave set up before the meeting and pours himself a scalding hot coffee. As soon as he lifts his cup, the steam becomes less pronounced and without hesitation, he takes a sip. Definitely a less objectionable use of the man's cold powers than what his girlfriend often complains about when she is here. "Thought you'd want to know."

Mike, who had of course managed to find work not far from where Eva was browsing, also looks up at the noise of the display falling and keychains clattering all over the floor. His eyes meet Melissa's and he gestures for her to leave it to him. He then takes a breath and walks towards the man to check what the matter with him is.

Eva is closer, however, and reaches the man first. His hair is grey and he looks maybe not old, but aged prematurely from stress. When Eva addresses him, asking if he's okay, his eyes lock on hers and for a moment, his slack expression tightens. There is fear in his eyes as he soundlessly mouthes something that could be 'No', or maybe 'Go'. And then Eva feels something slam into her, an invisible shockwave hammering into her chest.
OOC:
Let's have a roll from Harrigan with his next post to really get us kicked off. Something to resist the apparent attack. Remember: You always roll one relationship, one value and one asset, then the highest two results get added together for your total. You can spend plot points to add more dice to your pool or to add more results from your pool to your total. Finding a fitting relationship isn't always super easy for every roll. Just keep in mind that the person doesn't necessarily have to be present and look at your statements as well, not just the names.
In Smallville, Watchtower the GM always rolls first to set the target number and then PCs roll (and spend if they want) after that. For this, you'll be rolling against the Trouble Pool, which starts out at 2D6, meaning your target number to beat (not match), is 9.

Augusta looks a Draven and gives him a toothy grin. She grabs her overcoat, complete with a volumous hood, and slips out the side door. Before she steps out, she says, "Mugging is wrong!" with another grin. Her blood rises with the idea of a good fight. Her fists crackle with the prospect of skull bashing some hoodlums. She'll pull off their arms and then tear chunks of flesh from their ... She shakes her head. Focus, Auggie, you need to keep control. You're a heroine, be heroic and shit.

Slipping into the cold rain, she feels the water nearly part around her, as she sneaks to the front and looks around for this mugging.

Dave listened to Kaminski give little detail to his story. Coffee cup still in hand, his brown eyes cut over to Augusta still seated in the chair circle...if two chair could be considered a circle. "Alright. Brock, you hang here and we'll check it out. Can't have people getting mugged at St. Javelina's.
He smirked at the young Asian girl over the sip of scaldingly hot coffee , You up for this, Peter Parker, or you wanna keep Kaminski company? Ang was a conflicted mess, in Dave's estimation, at odds with just about every facet of who she was before and what she is now. He was glad she'd ended up coming to The Group. What she could've become without some kind of guidance was something he didn't care to think about. It seemed like that particular psychological 'sword of Damocles' still hung over her head and held her back, Dave thought. Better than the alternative...
As Augusta eagerly sprang up and headed towards the door, he grabbed his coat and threw it over his arm, Back in a few, Kaminski. Hold down the fort til we get back. Dave exited the basement climbed up the concrete stairs that currently functioned like a combination funnel and waterfall directing the icy rainwater into the overworked drain at the base of the stairwell. The incessant hiss of the heavy rainfall did little for the visibility nor the acoustics of the alleyway between St. Javelina's and the building beside it but the big man scanned around for Kaminski's reported disturbance.

The second Augusta and Dave step out of the shelter of the church together, they can feel the water penetrate their clothes and soak them to the bone. It really is a day to curl up under a thick blanket at home and have a coffee or hot chocolate, not to wander around in alleyways outside. But despite that, the two of them notice what Brock had been talking about, two people right where the alley opens out onto the larger street. A young woman with long blonde hair is being cornered by a taller and far stronger looking man who has his face obscured by the hood pulled up over his head. Both of them turn towards the door where Dave and Augusta just exited at the same time, then the man seems to decide that these two probably won't interfere and he turns his attention back to the woman, shoving her hard enough into the wall behind her to force the air out of her lungs before she can call towards the new arrivals.

To Melissa, it looks like the man isn't actually doing anything, just standing there. But then, Eva is suddenly thrown backwards, propelled by what feels to her like the shockwave of a small explosion ramming into her chest. She flies through the air and crashes into a shelf of discounted wares, knocking it over and landing on top of the hard metal frame. If she was an ordinary human, that blow could have easily been enough to at least hospitalize her. Luckily, whatever Eva is, it's not ordinary, so while it definitely wasn't a pleasant experience, she can endure worse than this and keep going.
Mike's eyes widen with horror and after a moment of indecision, he turns and runs over to where the tall blonde crashed. "Eva!" he calls as he climbs over the fallen shelf to check on her.

The man at the door reaches up and rubs his temple as if trying to massage away a headache.

Time for some Stress. Ordinarily, I'd reroll the same pool that caused the stress (excluding any dice that rolled 1s) and the die size that comes up highest would be your stress level. Since I only rolled 2D6, that's not really necessary. You'll take 1D6 stress, but I'll let you choose what type. My suggestion would be Angry, but anything you can justify is fine by me.

All of a sudden, the alley is filled with thick mist. It's hard to see precisely thanks to this limited visibility but it seems to Dave that this sudden change in the environment takes the would-be mugger by surprise, giving Dave a perfect opportunity to slam his full body weight into the man. He lets out a pained scream and is thrown hard to the ground, where he immediately tries to scramble away. To Dave, it appears as if he's attempting to flee.
Almost exactly the same moment, Augusta snatches up the blonde woman and swoops her away from that brief struggle and from her attacker. The woman stares at Augusta, clearly overwhelmed by this entire situation. She looks pretty young, probably a university student in one of the lower semesters. She's also unsurprisingly drenched to the bone in rain water.

As Melissa approaches the man, she feels some sort of power surrounding him, like a pressure that's coming from him. She doesn't get thrown back, however. Not yet, at least. The man turns his head in her direction when she addresses him but his eyes don't quite look at her. He once again forms a word with his mouth but if any sound is coming from him, it's drowned out by the sounds of random items around him being thrown from their shelves or moving as if pushed around. Melissa can't quite make out what he's trying to say, but it could be something like 'Raven'.
Feb 3, 2023 5:38 pm
Melissa's anger instantly turns into caution as the blond stops in her tracks, sensing the aura emanating from the strange man. Seeing various items on the shelves flying into the air she turns her attention entirely onto the man with the oddly unfocused eyes. Her own eyes narrow as she cranes her neck toward him in an attempt to read his lips since she can barely hear him amidst the clattering objects whizzing by.

"What was that? What are you trying to say? Raven is it? Who is Raven?"

The telekinetic blow — or whatever it is — knocks the wind out of Eva even as it sends her flying backwards, crashing through several displays and a sturdy rack full of cosmetics. She lands heavily, flat on her back, tits-up, sliding along the floor until she comes to an ungraceful stop. It’s not very often the messy-haired blonde runs into something in her life that can knock her flat, and hurt her — and she doesn’t like it. Her face is red as she quickly regains her feet, smooths her skirt back down, casts her pack aside and swats Mike’s help away without a second thought.

She’s in a gear now, mentally — one she shouldn’t be in, not in public, not without her control suit — and her fists are balled as she kicks wreckage out of the way and stalks towards the strange man. Kort is in the way and something weird is happening with pressure or telekinesis, so Eva calls out to the other woman as she approaches and tries to get between them. "Melissa! Stay back — this guy’s dangerous!"
OOC:
If she’s able, Eva is going to put herself between them, defensively, dukes up. Had Melissa not been trying to talk to the guy she’d probably just try to sock him, but the other woman is a bit of a calming influence here.
Feb 3, 2023 7:59 pm
"Huh ... what?

At first, Melissa is confused. How does Eva even know that the guy is dangerous? But taking her warning into consideration along with the weird forcefield she had experienced gave her reasons to pause.

Holding her hands up palms out, she steps back. "How do you know?"
Feb 3, 2023 8:27 pm
"Look at him!" Eva says, moving in front of the other woman. "And did you just see me go flying? That was him!"

The woman’s right hand is cocked and she’s moving back an forth a little, light on the balls of her feet. It’s a bit of a startling look given she’s dressed for work at the book and coffee shop — and now looks like she’s spoiling for a fight, and knows how to fight…
Feb 3, 2023 10:20 pm
"He did that? Hmm. Makes sense what with all the crap flying around, but what are you doing now with all the jumping around? Are you one of those ... you know ...special people?"

Melissa watches them both, her eyes flashing back and forth between the two of them, not really knowing what to do next.
