Menace Under Otari

Wugruk gets to the fishery first. Dante takes a little longer with his maintenance routine - plus, it's more or less just a job. Errich, having spent time poring through his notes and observations, is the last to arrive.
OOC:
You're welcome to do some RP with Tamily and each other! Otherwise...
Quote:
The stairs leading into the basement of the Otari Fishery creak with age as you make your way downstairs to find the beast that has been eating all the fish. In the center of the room, between stone pillars holding up the fishery overhead, are barrels filled with salted fish. Two of these barrels have been smashed open, spilling their contents on the floor. In the east wall is a large hole, opening into darkness.

Just a few moments ago, you gathered with a few other adventurers in the office of Tamily Tanderveil, where she offered you ten gold pieces each if you could put an end to this menace. She was thrilled when you agreed to help her with this simple task, but as you make your way downstairs, you can’t help but wonder if this might be a lot more adventure than you bargained for.
Mar 3, 2023 8:33 pm
"Careful..." Wugruk said to his new companions as he stepped off the last stair into the basement. Nearly instantly the dark of the basement was evident as his world changed to blacks, grays, and whites. "...It could still be here and we should be on our guard, I'll go ahead as I am the most armored and scout" Wugruk shifted the grip on his weapon to hold it one hand and took his wooden shield off his back. He then advanced into the room slowly, his head on a swivel.
OOC:
We should be in Exploration mode, unless Everwinter says otherwise, so I am going to use the SCOUT activity
Quote:
You scout ahead and behind the group to watch danger, moving at half speed. At the start of the next encounter, every creature in your party gains a +1 circumstance bonus to their initiative rolls. Link to Rule
Mar 3, 2023 9:45 pm
OOC:
Thanks for the quote and link! Got a map ready here, let me know if that's the correct marching order. I put Wugruk 10 ft ahead because afaik his speed is 20 ft and scouting moves him at half that rate.
Mar 3, 2023 10:23 pm
Looking at the other human in their little group, "I suppose you don't have a light?", and pulls out a sun-rod. "A limitation our ancestry really needs to evolve..." as he hits it against the staircase to ignite the tip and better see the area. He attaches it to his belt and pulls out a rapier. Errich looks around the room to see if he can spot any clue as to what this monster may be.
OOC:
Perception check?
Mar 3, 2023 10:24 pm
OOC:
Assuming no one wants to get ahead of the scout, then 10ft out ahead is where I'll stay, and move about 10ft at a time watching for lurking danger.
Mar 3, 2023 10:40 pm
Dante descends the creaky stairs leading into the basement of the Otari Fishery, his golden eyes scanning the room with a mixture of curiosity and amusement. He runs his fingers through his luxurious hair, tucking a stray strand behind his ear. "Yes," he answers Errich, "some light will certainly help."

He casts Produce Flame to have a little ball of flame in his palm.

"This looks like it's going to be fun," he remarks with a lazy grin, "I hope you all came prepared to get your hands dirty. This looks like it might be a bit more exciting than Tamily led us to believe."

OOC:
Dante will use the Detect Magic activity. You cast detect magic at regular intervals. You move at half your travel speed or slower. You have no chance of accidentally overlooking a magic aura at a travel speed up to 300 feet per minute, but must be traveling no more than 150 feet per minute to detect magic auras before the party moves into them.
Mar 4, 2023 1:23 am
As his companions follow Wugruk, Dante detects no magical aura nearby. The light from Errich's sunrod along with Dante's flame bring color to the room. Errich notices some of the barrels have been busted open, a few half-eaten fish scattered about. Following the fishy trail, they all notice a narrow opening on the wall: something burrowed its way into the basement.
OOC:
I see that Produce Flame is an attack spell, but since it's also a cantrip, I don't see a problem with using it as a light source. I imagine that Dante can easily tone down the strength of the cantrip so it becomes stable as it hovers over his hand.
Let's do perception all around, please.

As Errich attempts to discern what manner of beast gnawed on these fish, Dante and Wugruk hear some skittering from the dark opening. At first, they expect it to subside, but instead it grows louder... louder than any skittering ought to be.
OOC:
@Manhattan,@Madclergy take another +1 bonus to your initiative. Everyone roll for it! Initiative is a d20 + perception. To clarify, Errich gets +1 (from the scouting), Dante and Wugruk +2 (scouting + successful perception checks)

Dante and Wugruk are startled by three rats, who have no business being that big, turning the corner and quickly advancing towards the party. Despite having been distracted, Errich notices their alarm and is the first to spring to action. ((map))
Mar 6, 2023 10:13 pm
OOC:
@Madclergy, take your turn as well while we wait for @ctme2000. You're spearheading the party anyway. =)
Mar 7, 2023 4:22 am
"Dante, Wugruk, what is it?". He follows their gaze and notices the three large rats speeding menacingly towards them. He tries to remember if anything jumps out about these vermin, though admittedly his grasp on all things natural is limited.
OOC:
1st action - recall knowledge

Wugruk, the rats in plain sight sighed. "This isn't the monstrosity we seek" he then grumbled "...reduced to vermin slayer again" he then advanced on the lead rat and swung his axe at it!
OOC:

Action 1: Stride to H5
Action 2: Raise Shield
Action 3: Strike

Rolls

Dwarven Waraxe - Atk/Dam - (1d20+6, 1d8+3)

OOC:

@ctme2000 love it, I thought Aid was for skill checks only but it actually works for attack rolls - you have a chance to turn this from a miss to a hit :D please take the Aid reaction and describe it as you see fit. I'll let you run with it - this is just a large rat lol nothing special, they're rodents, and use their sharp teeth as their primary weapon. In large numbers and extended presence, pestilence may be a concern, but not in this situation.

I should add: I'm totally down to adjust the DC based on how creative you are in aiding Wugruk's attack ;D
Mar 8, 2023 1:56 am
While his interests in nature never took root, so to speak, the occult was another matter, and Errich had experimented with his fair share of vermin based test subjects. If any of them got too aggressive as a result of said experiments, a quick slit of their underbelly put that to rest. He imagined these particular rodents would simply need a slightly larger and deeper cut for the same effect.

"Wugruk, aim for their underbelly, the quickest way to expose their guts!"
OOC:
2nd and 3rd action? Hmm, don't know atm. Can I go on hold with remaining actions, or does it have to be the full round/action count?

Rolls

Occultism - Aid - (1d20+6)

(3) + 6 = 9

Mar 8, 2023 4:02 am
OOC:
Ok, that roll was unfortunate, but I really like your bit! XD let's fudge the dice =p besides, Wugruk was a little unfortunate in his damage roll too.

As for splitting remaining actions, I don't think it's possible - see the Delay free action. Looks like a turn needs to be taken in its entirety, so feel free to reposition yourself or attempt something else.
See also: Act "As soon as your turn ends, you lose all your remaining actions, but not your reaction or your ability to use free actions."
Heeding Errich's guidance, Wugruk waits for the right moment to strike. As one of the rats tries to look bigger by standing up, Wugruk's blade meets it square in the gut. It looks even angrier now.
Mar 8, 2023 12:44 pm
Wugruk grunted as he pulled his blade across the underbelly of the rodent, a much easier target than the nape of the neck where he usually aimed, though even with the tip the rat looked...angrier...it's whiskers twitching, beady eyes staring into Wugruk's soul.

"Good tip..." he said to Errich while he quietly cursed himself for not having put it to more use.
Mar 8, 2023 5:50 pm
"Ugh. Rats." Dante's delicate brows furrow as he surveys the filthy rodents with their beady eyes and scurrying movements. His nose wrinkles as if he could smell their foul stench, and he’s going to be really upset if the smell clings to him for the next few hours.

With a flick of his wrist, he flings the flame in his palm towards the nearest rodent, the flames illuminating his striking features with a flickering orange glow.

Neither rat can find a way through his well-fitted armor. In its frenzy, the wounded rat fails to notice a bolt of flame whizzing directly towards it. With a nasty squeak, it falls over, its belly seared.

The last rat takes the place of its fallen comrade in a perceived attempt to avenge it.

Action 1: drop rapier (free)
Action 2: pull out bow, knock an arrow
Action 3: Let loose with said arrow.

I'm not sure if the bow attack would take all 3 actions, but let's move forward for now. Go for it, @Madclergy.

edit: looks like it would be 1 Interact action to put away one weapon, another Interact action to draw the bow, and one Strike action to fire. If you Release (drop) the weapon instead of Interacting with it to put it away, you would end up with 1 more action to use. See Wielding Items.

Feeling more than a little woozy here! But I think I get to use this:
Quote:
Trigger An enemy damages your ally, and both are within 15 feet of you.
You protect your ally and strike your foe. The ally gains resistance to all damage against the triggering damage equal to 2 + your level. If the foe is within reach, make a melee Strike against it.

Rolls

Dwarven Waraxe - Atk/Dam - (1d20+6, 1d8+3)

1d20+6 : (13) + 6 = 19

1d8+3 : (5) + 3 = 8

Mar 10, 2023 3:36 am
OOC:
@Madclergy, if I'm understanding this right, Dante can reduce 3 damage from each strike (for a total of 6 reduction), but you can't perform a strike because the rat that damaged Dante is not within reach.

... or is it that Dante can only reduce 3 damage from the first strike, but not the second? Because you would have spent your reaction before the second strike.
Mar 10, 2023 3:58 am
OOC:
Yea, it's only the first strike, but yea no strike if he's not within 5 feet of me.
Mar 10, 2023 6:09 pm
OOC:
So it reduces 3 damage on the first strike, thank you Wugruk. On the second strike, Dante will use the Shield Block reaction with the Shield spell (Hardness 5) to reduce 5 damage. Dante’s HP would be 11/16.
Dante's eyes widen as he sees the rat dart towards him, teeth bared and eyes wild, sinking its teeth into Dante's flesh. The sharp pain jolts through his body, and he instinctively recoils, but Wugruk is quick to react, swinging his axe to fend off the attack. Seeing the dwarf’s action, Dante raises his magical shield, and it shimmers into existence, as the rat lunges forward once again, biting down hard on the shield, the force of the bite causes the shield to shatter like glass, dissipating into the air. Dante hisses, "Damn rats." He raises his palm, and a small flame ignites, casting flickering light around the dark room as he strikes at the rat.
OOC:
Action 1&2: Produce Flame
Action 3: TBD...If Dante moves right now, would the rat get an Attack of Oppurtunity?

Rolls

Produce Flame (Attack, Damage) - (1d20+7, 1d4+4)

1d4+4 : (3) + 4 = 7

Be it Dante's surprise, the rat's ingenuity, or both: the flames brighten the room for a second, scorching some rubble, and leaving the vermin unscathed.
OOC:
Attacks of opportunity aren't the norm, and the rats don't have it. I reserve the right to withhold such information for future foes =p
Mar 10, 2023 6:41 pm

Mar 11, 2023 6:03 pm
With years of steadied practice, Errich aims his bow and fires again, mimicking Dante's feelings under gritted teeth, "Damn rats."
OOC:
Attack with all three actions, with standard penalties.

Rolls

Short Bow - Attack 1 - (1d20+7)

(15) + 7 = 22

Short Bow - Attack 2 (-5 penalty) - (1d20+2)

(16) + 2 = 18

(15) - 3 = 12

Short Bow - Damage - (1d6+4)

(5) + 4 = 9

Short Bow - Damage - (1d6+4)

(6) + 4 = 10

Short Bow - Damage - (1d6+4)

(4) + 4 = 8

Mar 12, 2023 2:37 am
In a feat of marksmanship, Errich skewers both rats, each with a single arrow. A moment of silence falls upon the party, followed by sighs of relief.
OOC:
Well done! Out of initiative and back to exploration mode. =)

Please mark 80 XP for each of you!
Mar 12, 2023 2:28 pm
Wugruk looked back at Errich, "Your skill with a bow is evident and impressive" he then looked to his own wounds. "I will need a few minutes to heal from my injuries, unless one of you has something that could assist as well?" Wugruk hung his shield and axe in there appropriate place on his back and side and then pressed his hand against the wound on his arm and began to pray.
OOC:

Using lay on hands to heal six points of HP. Putting me up to fifteen, I'd like to take 10 minutes to refocus so I can use that once more to get to twenty one hit points and then refocus once more, another 10 minutes, so I can have it on deck in combat if needed.
Mar 12, 2023 6:07 pm
"Might as well takes a rest." Dante lets out a heavy sigh as he kicks the lifeless rodent away with a look of utter disdain on his face. He runs his fingers through his luscious hair, trying to shake off the memory of the rat's filthy fur touching his skin. He takes a moment to inspect the bite on his leg, a scowl forming on his lips at the sight of the red mark left behind by the rodent's teeth. "Nasty rat." He murmurs.
Mar 12, 2023 7:34 pm
Wugruk just now noticed the bite on Dante's leg. "I'll heal you next, I didn't know you were injured"
Mar 12, 2023 11:47 pm
Nodding at Wugruk, "Thank you for the kind words. I have some experience with treating wounds if you need it.". Looking at Dante, "Same with you Dante. Best to assume these things were diseased."

He sheates his rapier and knocks another arrow in the bow.
OOC:
If magical healing doesn't cover all HP, I can roll Medicine and also have an elixir of life
Mar 13, 2023 1:57 am
Dante scrunches his nose at Errich's warning, "Great. The last thing I need is to catch some disease from these filthy rodents."

He accepts Wugruk's healing, watching the dwarf's work with interest. "I really should look into healing myself." As Wugruk's hand glows with a faint, warm light, Dante lets out a soft exhale and says, "Wugruk, had anyone ever told you that your hands are much gentler than they look?"
Mar 13, 2023 11:37 am
Wogruk looked a bit distressed, or even angry at Dante's expression, "No." but then his face softened, "...but Angradd provides for those who do battle in his honor. Your magic was also quite impressive." After he was finished laying on hands he readied his axe and shield once more. "We should keep moving, we've stayed here long enough"
OOC:
I am happy to let you treat wounds whenever. I just wasn't sure what all skills we had amongst the party and so was trying to get us patched up :)
Mar 13, 2023 2:52 pm
OOC:
Looks like only Errich is trained in Medicine to be able to use Treat Wounds. You'd also need a set of healer's tools, which I don't see in your inventory but feel free to add retroactively.

Does anyone need additional healing? (also lol at Dante's comment)
Mar 13, 2023 3:42 pm
"I can't match the healing powers of your deity Wugruk, but it'll be available if you or Dante need it."
OOC:
ah, makes sense. Thanks GM!
Mar 13, 2023 3:51 pm
OOC:
So how much healing does Dante need? Each use of Lay on Hands heals 6, and I have refocus for 10 minutes after every use (for now). Wurguk needs two uses, so that's 30 minutes we need to sit here if Dante only needs 6 or less.
Mar 13, 2023 3:54 pm
OOC:
Oops I thought I updated Dante’s sheet, but maybe not. Dante needs 5 points of healing.
Mar 14, 2023 12:32 am
OOC:
I'm gonna fast-forward just a little bit because the next section is only about skill checks. Feel free to take any additional healing actions as needed.
As the group enters the narrow tunnel, they leave behind all light save for Errich's sunrod. Wugruk quickly notices a small cliff leading down. It's approximately a 10-foot drop. How will everyone get down safely?
Mar 14, 2023 1:41 pm
"I have something for this" Wugruk unshouldered his pack and pulled out a grappling hook, "We can secure this off up here and then climb down a rope"
Mar 14, 2023 2:49 pm
Rummaging through his own backpack, Errich says "With my rope and your grappling hook, we'll be down there in a moment."
Mar 14, 2023 2:50 pm
Wugruk finds a suitable spot for the hook, gives it a good yank. Sturdy enough.
OOC:
Never go to a basement without rope, after all. @Madclergy, please note the hook and rope will be left behind. Everyone, roll Athletics please.

the crb doesn't mention how many feet of rope on gets, but usually it's 25-50ft in other games. Can I cut about 15 ft of it to use for our climb and store the rest away, in case required later?
Mar 14, 2023 6:51 pm
Wugruk rappels down with ease, clearing the remaining distance with a calculated leap. Dante tries to follow suit, but loses his footing and has to work on regaining control before continuing.
OOC:
@Manhattan, instead of making you roll again, let's just say you struggle a bit and make your way down. Nothing else is going on, so there's no reason to delay.

@ctme2000, that sounds good to me. The beginner box handbook mentions 50 ft of rope, so we'll go with that. Per Wugruk's sheet, he has rope too, so let's say he keeps that one and Errich now has 35 ft of rope left.
Mar 14, 2023 9:09 pm
Errich cuts some of the rope, using only what he expects they'll need, and stows the rest away. Once the others make their way down, he quickly descends with practiced ease.

Before following the group, Errich inspects this strange growth along the cavern walls. He gets closer to some of the bigger specimens, lifts his sunrod up to them, cautiously sniffs... he should've known earlier, but he hasn't seen them in their natural habitat! These are delicious mushrooms, when prepared correctly. Worth a few copper.
OOC:
Book just says they're mushrooms, and unless I start homebrewing, the only other mushrooms I could find were some crazy hazards hahah

"This webbing is more than a little ominous, eight legged creatures be damned. Be alert" Wugruk took out his axe and shield once more as he progressed slowly ahead of the others, moving the webbing with his axe where necessary.
OOC:
Still Scouting as an exploration activity.
Mar 15, 2023 1:14 am
As soon as Wugruk touches a strand of web, everyone hears some skittering from up ahead. The webbing begins to vibrate, and from the cloudy shadows a massive spider emerges just in time for dinner!
OOC:
Perception from all, please! With +1 from Scouting.

"Well, wouldn’t want you to miss my charming company." Dante says with a extravagant flip of his hair, the dark tresses cascade down his shoulders in an elegant wave.

He reaches out his hand, fingers spread, conjuring a guard dog from the aether. The majestic dog materializes before them, its sleek coat shimmers in the dim light of the cavern, and its teeth gleam in the darkness. Dante points to the enormous arachnid. "See that?" He says to the dog. "Bite it if it comes too close."

Dante's guardian points out a few cocoons nearby, of varying sizes: the dried out husks of the less fortunate. The spider remains the only danger. It raises itself, curls its abdomen, and releases a spray of thick webbing on Errich, catching Dante in its crossfire.
OOC:
This webbing isn't actually AoE, so I'm using 2 spider actions for separate ranged attacks.
Then, the spider retreats into a corner, hoping to avoid those pesky arrows. (map updated)

OOC:
@ctme2000 can still take actions except moving from their position until an Escape attempt is successful.

Top of the round with Wugruk!
Mar 20, 2023 5:12 pm
Blast, the creature had ranged attacks, who would have thought! "Hanging back isn't going to work unless we can get it to follow us." He didn't want to rush into the webbing, having seen how it affected Errich he was sure the rest would immobilize him too. Using fire to burn away the webbing might work, though he wasn't sure how flammable they were, or if they'd catch everything else. But if they were to continue forward he had to kill this spider. Still his torches were in his pack and to light one would take a minute or more. They didn't have the time. It would be better to have Errich free, and to have Dante burn away the webs if possible.

"Dante work on those webs with fire while I free Errich!"
OOC:

OOC: Wugruk is assuming a lot here, if something doesn't play out this way, great, all the more realistic.

Action 1: Move to J10 (I should be in K9 from last turn)
Action 2: Drop lay down carefully Waraxe, Draw Dagger
Action 3: Attempt to free Errich from the webbing with Dagger (not sure if there is a roll needed here)
Mar 20, 2023 5:47 pm
Wugruk drops his axe on a nearby web hammock ((like tossing your phone on the couch)) and begins to carve Errich out of this sticky situation.
OOC:
Thanks for the position correction, fixed!

I think we can approach this in two ways:
1. Wugruk uses his 3rd action to Aid Errich during Errich's turn; or
2. Wugruk Interacts with the web (can't find a better action, see here) in an attempt to quickly release Errich.

Option 1 would have a higher probability of success, but burns 1 of Errich's actions for Escape.
With either option, Wugruk chooses between a straight Dex roll or Athletics (cutting vs ripping). A failure on cutting may harm Errich, but I'll give a circumstance bonus for using the dagger.

Feel free to negotiate these adjudications, we're all learning =)
Mar 20, 2023 6:02 pm
OOC:
Also realized I forgot the multiple attack penalty but let's roll with this since Errich was the primary target anyway =p
Mar 20, 2023 6:38 pm
OOC:

I think I'd rather do the Athletics check and save Errich his action. I will go ahead and roll that.

Mar 20, 2023 7:33 pm
Using the dagger to safely sever a few of the stronger strands, Wugruk then rips the thick webbing with his hands, allowing Errich to now move freely.
OOC:
@ctme2000, go for it!
Mar 20, 2023 7:54 pm
OOC:
Ya! Epic!
Mar 23, 2023 3:23 am
"Most appreciated, Wugruk." as Errich quickly escapes his restraints.

"We need to flush it out of its hiding spot, and to your point Wugruk, burn the webbing. Dante, start blasting."

At this, Errich, places his bow on the ground, kneels, and rummages through his backpack. "There it is...". He takes out a torch (wrapped in cloth), douses it with some oil, and lights it aflame with flint and steel. He then holds it under the webbing, waiting for it to catch.
OOC:
Action 1: Take torch out of backpack
OOC:
Action 2: Light torch
OOC:
Action 3: Burn the webbing

OOC:
I looked into this as well, and Everwinter could rule otherwise, but Taking off the backpack is an interact, retrieving the torch is an action, and then Flint and Steel says, "Flint and steel are useful in creating a fire if you have the time to catch a spark, though using them is typically too time-consuming to be practical during an encounter. Even in ideal conditions, using flint and steel to light a flame requires using at least 3 actions, and often significantly longer."

OOC:
Thanks for looking into it, I wouldn't have thought to search for flint and steel as an item! XD
To keep things moving, I'll be flexible and allow Errich's 3 actions to light a torch (mostly because he's got fuel). (1) Take it out, (2) douse it in oil, (3) then a spark or two should ignite the oil.

Dante is up!
Mar 24, 2023 5:59 am
"Okay, start blasting."

A ball of flame appears in Dante's palm, dancing and flickering to the rhythm. He thinks about it for a moment, then throws it at the webbing, see if it will catch on fire. Looking down at the dog at his feet, he points a finger to the corner of the cavern, where the massive spider lurks in the shadows. "Go. Drag it out of there. Don't let it get the best of you, you're stronger than it is."
OOC:
Action 1 & 2: Produce Flame (at the webs?)
Action 3: Sustain Summon Lesser Servitor

It looks like dog may need to use both of its moves to get to the spider so that's what it will do. Its speed is 30 feet.
Action 1: Move
Action 2: Move

Produce Flame (Attack, Damage) - (1d20+7, 1d4+4)

OOC:
Well, the web doesn't have listed stats and I think Hampering Web is overkill right now, so let's just roll with it. You would've hit the hampering web anyway lol
Dante's fire bolt burns a hole in all the webbing between him and the opposite wall, where it puffs in a small explosion. A bit of the web shrivels and singes, but cannot sustain a flame. Dante sicks the dog onto the spider. The hound dashes through the webs and manages to reach the spider in its corner.
OOC:
Doing Produce Flame one more time will clear remaining webs from that line, let's say from K10 to M4.
Mar 24, 2023 3:09 pm
Threatened by this fearsome creature, the spider lashes out!

Dog sees it coming, and leaps out of the way! Spider tries again, this time sinking its fangs into its adversary.

The spider coils back, waiting for the poison to take hold on the now yelping and twitching dog, and climbs up onto the ceiling of the cave ((still where it is on the map, but 10 ft up)).
OOC:

Wugruk's javelin nearly finds its mark, but the spider curls itself just in time.
Mar 25, 2023 2:06 am
Seeing the torch not having much effect on the webbing, Errich throws it down in irritation. note to self: take a course on arachnology

Following Wugruk's lead, he readies his bow, moves past Dante, and lets loose an arrow at the spider.

Mar 27, 2023 12:47 am
OOC:

Errich takes a moment to aim carefully, and manages to sink another arrow in between a pair of lags. The spider is having a bad, bad day.
OOC:
Dante, now.
Mar 27, 2023 1:04 am
Dante sighs and decides to dismiss the dog, seeing it struggle. He'll move forward, and blast the spider with fire.

Errich's calculated shot bursts through one of the spider's big eyes, nearly killing it twice over. Its legs curl inwards as it remains attached to its web, swinging quietly.
Mar 29, 2023 12:47 pm
"Good job Errich" Wugruk said, only a little sad he had not gotten to kill the beast himself. "Is anyone injured?"
Mar 29, 2023 3:46 pm
Clapping Wugruk on his meaty shoulder, "Worry not, I've a feeling there will be more of these to twain. Everyone keep a sharp eye."

"No injuries here." as Errich goes over to stamp out the burning torch and places it in his backpack.

Then, he blows out a small breath. "That poor dog though." He says regrettably.
Mar 29, 2023 7:52 pm
Wugruk smiled at Errich's comments, hiding a small wince from the clap near one of the wounds from the spider.

Across from the barricade, the main passage continues off into the gloom.
OOC:
To clarify, since I'm being lazy about the map, the barricade blocks a side passage but you can also proceed further into the main passage.
Mar 31, 2023 9:18 pm
His curiosity getting the better of him, "Wugruk, care to help me remove this barricade? There's something in there that looks of interest..."

Dante steps forward, intrigued by Errich's discovery. "Count me in," He says, lifting an eyebrow, "Hidden treasure in the basement maybe?"

He casts Detect Magic to see if there's any trace of magic beyond the tunnel.
Apr 2, 2023 1:08 am
Dante senses no magic within the reaches of his detection. How do you all want to deal with this barricade?
Apr 2, 2023 12:42 pm
Wugruk thought about the course of action, "We definitely shouldn't leave the possibility of enemies behind us." he then put away his axe and shield and began to pry at the barricade with his hands to try and remove it.

OOC:
Is there an engineering check to see what the best course of action would be to remove the barricade, causing minimal noise/structural damage?

Errich looks over the barricade for a weak point. It doesn't look too different from other places that meant to keep him out, and shortly after he's able to suss out a spot.

Together, Errich and Wugruk take down the barricade without causing it to crumble. As the party steps farther into the passage, Dante senses magic within the large chamber ahead.
Quote:
Beyond the barricade, an old cavern corridor winds down into the earth, ending in an ancient burial vault lit by a strange torch with a blue flame. Alcoves line the walls, each one containing a rotten wooden coffin, while the center of the room has a raised platform holding a stone sarcophagus.
Apr 3, 2023 1:56 pm
Wugruk once more returns his axe and shield to his hands, "We now walk among the dead, careful..." Wugruk kept a steady eye on the coffins, but more so on the sarcophagus, always ready for danger!

Rats would've been a welcome sight. Instead, the party watches bony hands pry open the lids of four of the coffins, as sunken eye sockets, void of life, mark their prey with an unnatural glow. From the central sarcophagus, a fleshy, rotting corpse struggles to break free.
OOC:

"A cursed one!" Wugruk replies to Dante, "Let's use the entrance to this room as a choke point, Errich retreat back!"

OOC:
Added initiative order and baddies to the map. Go for it, Errich.

"I don't know how chokepoints work!" Dante says. A flick of his wrist sends a ray of frost shooting out from his fingertips, aimed directly at the rising zombie. Then he casts shield on himself.
OOC:
Action 1 & 2: Ray of Frost
Action 3: Shield

Disgusted by these creatures, Dante fails to steady his hand and the frost ray leaves a trail of ice needles across the room.
Apr 7, 2023 12:12 am
Wugruk steps back a bit and readies an action to strike one of the undead creatures when it comes closer, "Lure them back to where we only have to face one at a time, I'll hold them, and you pelt them with your magics!"

As a reminder, Wugruk can shield block. Otherwise, Errich is up!
Apr 7, 2023 9:27 pm
Wugruk snapped his shield into place as the skeleton raked it's finger bones, sharpened to claws surely from scratching the inside of it's coffin, down on him. The shield absorbed most of the blow but he still felt a faint trickle of blood from his right cheek.
OOC:
Using Shield Block Reaction. Wooden Shield will absorb 3 of the 5 due to it's hardness. So then the 2 damage remaining will go to both Wugruk's hit points (20/22) and the Shield's HP (10/12, shield breaks at 6)
Apr 11, 2023 2:24 am
Seeing that Wugruk meant staying at the mouth of the tomb entrance and not barricade, he curses, and heads back next to Wugruk, cursing himself again as he sees the bony claws get past and rake across his companion.

He hurls the bottled lightning at the skeleton.

omg I just realized the map didn't update for some reason. Fixed now.
@ctme2000, you only need 1 stride to get in range, so would you like to do anything else with your remaining action? And where would you like to end up on the map? Also, who's your target?
Apr 13, 2023 1:06 pm
OOC:
I'll move up to B10 then, and throw the bottled lightning at skeleton 4. For my remaining action, can I do a knowledge check to get more info on the skeletons/zombie, in particular weaknesses? Is this akin to DnD where you had to strike with the flat of your blade vs. pierce in order to do damage?
Apr 13, 2023 1:45 pm
OOC:
Yes, you can do a Recall Knowledge, which I've rolled in secret below.

Certain weapons have the Versatile trait followed by the type of damage they can deal. A shortsword, for example, can deal piercing or slashing damage.

Rolls

Errich: Recall Knowledge

Apr 13, 2023 1:48 pm
Errich doesn't know much about these unholy creatures. He suspects they have certain advantages that make them decent guardians, in addition to not requiring sustenance or sleep. He can only conjecture what these could be.
Apr 13, 2023 1:52 pm
OOC:

Apr 14, 2023 6:54 am
"Ugh, nasty skeletons!" Dante exclaims, disgusted. With a flick of his wrist, he conjures a fiery orb that crackles with heat and hurls it at the nearest skeleton. As the undead horde continues to close in, Dante quickly weaves a protective shield around himself with a series of arcane gestures, a shimmering barrier of magical energy that pulsates with a soft blue glow.

Wugruk's weapon cannot find purchase. The skeletons retaliate with their rusty scimitars and precarious shortbows.

shortbow damage to Wugruk - (1d6)

(1) = 1

Apr 15, 2023 12:30 pm
Wugruk deftly dodges each of the attacks, shoving aside claws, deflecting arrows with his shield. His armor stops a few of the blows from making it through, and end the end a single arrow sticks from his wooden shield where it would have pierced his leg. Wugruk snarled at the undead in retort!
OOC:
What incredible luck! I will use Shield Block to reduce that 1 damage to 0, no damage to Wugruk or the shield as it's below the hardness level of the shield.
Apr 15, 2023 2:12 pm
OOC:
That's right, now it was me who forgot about shield block lol

From where I'm at, if I were to use my arrows, would my companions possibly get hit, or act as cover for the enemy?
Apr 16, 2023 2:40 am
OOC:
No chance your companions would get hit, but skellies get a +1 to AC for lesser cover. On a related note, I gave Wugruk a +2 from Sk3's arrows because the skeletons don't really cooperate with each other. But even though Dante and Wugruk are both in front of you, I'm cool with just a +1 assuming basic communication. =)

Not quite, and the skeleton stands! These skellies are really interesting creatures. =) Will talk about them in rules discussion after this.

Nah, nothing happens on crit failures for strikes. Perhaps a more ruthless GM may incur a house rule of friendly fire =p
Unleashing his barrage, Errich's second shot flies straight into the skeleton's skull. The arrow shatters within the empty bone chamber, somehow interrupting the magic that powers this guardian. The skeleton collapses.

Have a look at everything that's at your disposal. Inventory, actions, feats, hero points. I'll allow Errich to use a hero point to reroll the first attack if you'd like. Otherwise, Dante's turn.

Wugruk's turn. He's currently flat-footed (-2) but has the +1 from Dante's ward. You can try to escape the grab (note it counts as an attack and will incur MAP). Strike is still doable while grabbed, as far as I can tell, and won't suffer penalties (other than MAP).
Apr 28, 2023 5:44 pm
Wugruk felt the warmth of the Forbidding Ward magic on his back, it gave him a little piece of mind but he was still stuck in this rotting monsters arms! "Filthy undead, release me!" he growled as he attempted to escape!

*After escaping*
Prying loose from the Zombie's grip Wugruk dropped to one knee for a mere moment before swinging up at the creature with his axe and once again raising his shield to try and defend himself "If I fall..." Wugruk said between breaths, "...return me to the forge fires from whence I came!"

Here is the rules on this for reference:
Quote:
Additional Knowledge
Source Core Rulebook pg. 506 4.0
Sometimes a character might want to follow up on a check to Recall Knowledge, rolling another check to discover more information. After a success, further uses of Recall Knowledge can yield more information, but you should adjust the difficulty to be higher for each attempt. Once a character has attempted an incredibly hard check or failed a check, further attempts are fruitless—the character has recalled everything they know about the subject.

Think it's my turn ya?
Wugruk felt the life restoring liquid still lingering in his mouth as his eyes snapped open. Dante stood over top of him seemingly thinking about the creatures in front of them. He slowly gathered himself and stood up. The sounds of the world were still muffled as the blood emptied from his skull from the trauma, his eyes danced wildly, taking in the situation. How long had he been gone? Seconds? Had to be otherwise the dead would have felled the others, or sent him off to the boneyard. He grabbed his axe, his shield was broken, no use any longer, so the weapon he took in two hands.

Dante had the right of it though, they needed to think of how best to dispatch their foes, he tried to pull his mind into focus on the skeleton, what had he learned at the church?
OOC:
I don't think Wugruk recalled knowledge, he has a +4 to religion
Action 1: Stand
Action 2: Recall Knowledge on Skeletons

--EDIT--
Actually I think I'd like to take the free action to delay my last action until I see what the results of my recall knowledge check are

OOC:
I don't think you can use actions and then Delay. Pretty sure you have to delay your entire turn. What you could do is Recall Knowledge first, then ready an action - but you'd remain prone.
May 9, 2023 11:13 am
OOC:
Maybe I am reading this wrong? It seems to be saying that you can delay at any point in the turn. However, really, the recall knowledge check would be handled right when I did it if we were at the table. So I'd be able to stand, ask for the recall knowledge check, get the results, and then determine my action. In Play by Post we try to make things run quickly by posting all three actions, but this seems like a situation where if I want my potential third action to be not wasted I might want the recall knowledge results. So I figured best way to do that was to delay and then hop back in once you had a chance to give me those results. Maybe, not the right way to handle it though so I'll leave it up to you :)

From the delay action, emphasis in bold:
Quote:
You wait for the right moment to act. The rest of your turn doesn’t happen yet. Instead, you’re removed from the initiative order. You can return to the initiative order as a free action triggered by the end of any other creature’s turn. This permanently changes your initiative to the new position. You can’t use reactions until you return to the initiative order. If you Delay an entire round without returning to the initiative order, the actions from the Delayed turn are lost, your initiative doesn’t change, and your next turn occurs at your original position in the initiative order.

When you Delay, any persistent damage or other negative effects that normally occur at the start or end of your turn occur immediately when you use the Delay action. Any beneficial effects that would end at any point during your turn also end. The GM might determine that other effects end when you Delay as well. Essentially, you can’t Delay to avoid negative consequences that would happen on your turn or to extend beneficial effects that would end on your turn.
May 9, 2023 3:35 pm
OOC:
Yea let's hijack this thread for rules discussion real quick. XD

The reasons I think Delay applies to the entire turn is that the trigger is "your turn begins", and you're removed from initiative to join later as a free action (and remain in that new position thereafter). See also the distinctions between Ready and Delay as some have pointed out here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Pathfinder2e/comments/10xgh5v/understanding_the_ready_action_vs_the_delay_action/

Additionally, the wording "If you Delay an entire round without returning to the initiative order, the actions from the Delayed turn are lost" implies to me that an entire turn is delayed.
edit: for what it's worth, the index entry for Delay in the core rulebook states "take your turn later".

Just to confirm, no one can see these secret rolls, right? XD I hope I'm setting the correct option.
Wugruk doesn't want to go down again. He takes a moment to consider how to defeat these foes. Elemental magic didn't seem effective, and he's pretty sure Errich got lucky with the arrow. Blades were good on the zombie, but there's nothing to slice off from these skeletons.

Both skeletons stow their bows, draw their scimitars, and advance menacingly.
OOC:
Errich's turn!

Rolls

Wugruk Battleborn: Recall Knowledge

May 10, 2023 1:16 pm
OOC:
No it just shows "Wugruk Battleborn: Recall Knowledge", so do I know if I succeeded, critically succeeded, failed or critically failed? Or do I find out the next time I try it? There's a lockout right after you critically fail or succeed? Also from what you wrote I am to take that resistance to elemental magic, piercing and slashing weapons? So safe to assume bludgeoning weapons and good damage would be good?
May 10, 2023 2:41 pm
OOC:
I'd love to keep the results as hidden as possible because of the range of possibility from critical failures to critical successes... but it's tricky because failures mean additional checks are fruitless. If I tell you that you can attempt another check, you can infer that your roll was successful. I think the only way to avoid that is to have you roll again even if your initial roll was a failure or crit failure, and basically ignore the results of the second roll.

I'm not looking to be super serious, so I don't mind telling you whether you can learn more with another check. I'll leave it up to you.

And yes, those resistances check out. Bludgeoning and good/positive are a good bet, though not necessarily "super effective".

Sorry y'all, will post later today.
May 15, 2023 5:36 pm
Heartened that only two skeletons remain, and disheartened that Wugruk went down, then reheartened when he got back up. This glass case of emotions is ready to drag Errich down to the same grimy grave as whence yonder enemies came from.

He violently shakes his head, ceasing such thoughts. "Wugruk, Dante, retreat if need be! I can provide cover with my arrows!"

Another barrage, another lucky shot from Errich, who seems to be getting a knack for finding, among the animated bones, the one without which the skeletons simply crumble. As if a skeleton had a keystone.
OOC:
Almost out of this pickle =) Dante's up
May 17, 2023 8:45 am
Dante's eyes widen with admiration as Errich's arrow finds its mark, toppling another skeleton with precision. "Nice shot!" he exclaims. Drawing upon his own magical prowess, Dante redirects his focus to the lone remaining skeleton, channeling his energy into a searing fire bolt that crackles and dances in his outstretched hand.

Dante just misses (1 action to sustain Ward sounds right) - back to Wugruk!
May 18, 2023 3:36 pm
Wugruk knows his weapon will be less than effective, but he has to try! He rears back with both hands on his axe and drives it forward over and over hoping to connect with the bones of the skeleton!
OOC:
I need to find a bludgeoning weapon for these kind of occasions lol

While Wugruk aptly hits the skeleton, his axe glides over smooth bone to no effect.
OOC:
yep, pesky resists!
OOC:
On second thought, I think Dante would have had to re-cast the Ward because the original target was the zombie, but I'll let it slide for this turn.
May 18, 2023 4:25 pm
The skeleton, unfazed by the fall of its companions, continues to perform admirably.
OOC:
Should've been AC 19 I think - shield wasn't raised. Also can't block. 😬

If I took 7 damage I'm still standing, but barely at 2 hp
May 20, 2023 10:46 pm
Dante agrees with Errich's sentiment, and conjures a small fire bolt in his hand again, trying to drop the last skeleton.
OOC:
Action 1 & 2: Produce Flame
Action 3: Shield... since Forbidding Ward is not active anymore :P

Rolls

Produce Flame (Attack, Damage) - (1d20+7, 1d4+4)

That does it! Dante's fire bolt is the last drop for this undead guardian. =)
OOC:
Everyone take 100 XP and a hero point!
Quote:
After the fight, the heroes have time to look around the room for treasure. The torch is a special magic item called an everburning torch that emits light constantly. Although it looks like fire, it emits no heat and can’t be extinguished! In addition, one of the skeletons was buried with a polished shield carved to look like a roaring lion. It can be used as a shield, or the heroes can sell it for 5 gp due to its fine artistry.
OOC:
I'm not sure what the stats of this shield are. Let's go with steel shield.
May 21, 2023 11:15 am
Wugruk was battered, bruised, and bloody from his wounds. His shield was in pieces, though not beyond repair. He would need some time to recover from his wounds.

"You both fought valiantly, we should take a few minutes here to rest up before moving on" he then slumped down against one of the now empty coffins and began to pray to Angradd to refocus himself.
OOC:
If nobody objects I could use that shield in place of my broken wooden shield, at least until we get out of here and then we could sell it if we so choose. Wugruk will need about 50 minutes to fully heal with Lay on Hands, unless someone wants to do medicine on him as well
May 21, 2023 6:52 pm
Dante's concerned gaze settles upon Wugruk, taking in the sight of his battered and bloodied form. "You look very hurt, Wugruk. Errich, my capable friend, do you have any skills that can help ease his pain and hasten his recovery?"
May 22, 2023 11:30 am
"There is nothing Angradds great forge can't repair Dante." he winced as he laid his hand over one of his wounds and began to pray.
May 22, 2023 5:34 pm
With a relieved sigh, "Takes a beating and keeps on ticking. You're making us look bad, old dwarf." Errich says with a slight grin, as he rushes over to Wugruk.

"Let me take a look at your injuries..."

As a spray of Wugruk's arterial blood washes over Errich, he claps the dwarf on the back, "You'll be just fine."

Rummaging through his pack and pulling out a small elixir of pinkish fluid, "I do have this though, perhaps you should have it."

"Uagha.." Wugruk groaned in pain as Errich looked him over. "...nay lad there is no pride in merely surviving a battle. Decisive victory is in Angradd's honor. But I did learn a lesson here, I need something blunt to strike the undead without flesh to cut." Wugruk took the elixer of life from Errich. "Thank you for this, it will come in handy if I am hurt again in combat. We should rest while we are in a defensive position and clear of the undead, and save this for when it's really needed"
May 24, 2023 12:59 am
OOC:
In the beginner's box, nothing's going to happen if you just linger, so we can say everyone's back up to full and good to go.
Getting back to the main passage, you come across an opening to your left. On top of a 10-foot ledge is a set of old wooden doors tightly shut.
OOC:
The curious must climb up with Athletics; otherwise, you can keep going.
May 24, 2023 11:31 am
OOC:
Good by me, was there anything in that room Wugruk could take as a bludgeoning weapon just in case? Even if it's like a weighted sconce? Also it didn't appear there was objection to me taking the shield, so I'll add that to my character sheet.
Wugruk dropped once more back into position, keeping an eye out for dangers as the group moved through the corridors. When he see's the doors he alerts the others quietly and then moves into position to open them. He presses his ear against the wood grain and listens for any activity on the other side.
OOC:
I think this is a secret perception check yes? If not you can still roll at +4 for Wugruk to speed things along.
May 24, 2023 2:32 pm
"No objections, that shield seems to fit you well. Perhaps one of the skeletons femurs will work as a way to bludgeon them?"

Seeing the doors, Errich scampers up the ledge and also listens in with Wugruk.
OOC:

No traps, but good thinking!
For a bludgeoning weapon, grab whatever seems appropriate. Maybe the sconce that was holding the torch, or a femur like Errich suggested. We'll call it a club, with -2 for improvised weapon.
Quote:
The ancient wooden door creaks open on rusty hinges, revealing a ruined chamber. Mold and rot stain every surface. On the far side of the room is stone statue of a giant squid, its tentacles reaching toward an altar in the center of the chamber. The scum covers almost everything, but it hasn’t touched the silver bowl sitting atop the stone altar. The water in the bowl is perfectly clear.
May 26, 2023 3:06 pm
"What in Angradd's beard is this? An Alter to some fishing god?" Wugruk wracked his brain, thinking if he'd heard of a giant squid religion in the local area.
OOC:
Can I get a Recall Knowledge check based on religion regarding the alter and squid statue?
May 26, 2023 4:29 pm
OOC:
Here goes!
Other than clearly ocean-related, Wugruk is having a hard time recalling what deity or otherworldly entity this may be.

Rolls

Wugruk Battleborn: Religion (Wis) - (1d20+4)

May 26, 2023 6:40 pm
As the door creaks open, Dante's gaze is immediately drawn to the stone statue of a giant squid, its intricately carved tentacles reaching out towards the central altar. "Well," He says, "I must say, this squid really knows how to make a splash in the décor department." He tries to think what he knows of the significance of the squid statue as well.
OOC:
Can Dante do a Recall Knowledge check?
May 26, 2023 6:44 pm
OOC:
Of course! I'm just gonna do one for Errich too lol
Errich's not sure either, but Dante has a suspicion that it's some sort of cult-related eldritch thing.

Rolls

Dante Everett: Religion - (1d20+3)

After studying the bowl for a bit, "Dante, this seems suspiciously clean after so long down here. Can you detect anything magical about it"?
May 27, 2023 5:09 am
"Hmm..." Dante ponders, "I wonder if this is some sort of cult-related eldritch thing. Let me see..."

Dante casts Detect Magic on the bowl to see if there's anything magical about it.
May 27, 2023 1:03 pm
As Errich and Dante focused on the bowl Wugruk kept watch near the entrance, not wanting anything to sneak up on them.
May 28, 2023 9:22 pm
Dante does sense the presence of magic. The state of the bowl in stark contrast with the state of everything else in this room betrays where the magic comes from.
May 29, 2023 11:39 pm
Dante's keen senses tingle with the presence of magic, his golden eyes narrow as they fixate on the silver bowl, its pristine state amidst the decaying surroundings captivating his attention. "There's magic here. The bowl must be enchanted." Turning to look at the other two, he asks, "Should we investigate more closely?"
May 30, 2023 1:19 pm
"It's intriguing, and may be connected to why we are here" Wugruk said over his shoulder, still watching for anything that might come into the room after them.
May 30, 2023 3:19 pm
Errich tentatively heads up to the bowl, places his hands around the rim, and sees if it can be lifted off.
Jun 1, 2023 2:58 am
Errich picks up the bowl uneventfully, save for a few tiny spores that burst with the movement.

"Well, that was surprisingly uneventful. Dante, can you discern what type of magic enchants this bowl?"
Jun 1, 2023 11:44 am
"Sometimes nothing happening is the greatest blessing of all" Wugruk chirped from his sentinel position. "Are you finding anything of importance? Should we move on?"
Jun 6, 2023 2:44 pm
OOC:
chug! chug! chug!
Jun 6, 2023 5:54 pm
Seeing no traps sprung, and the strange dichotomy between the bowl and it's surrounding area, Errich takes a small wooden cup out of his bag and fills it part way with water.

Looking at his companions, "If this ends me, it was a pleasure knowing you chaps." and takes a swig of water from the cup.

A moment of tension quickly subdues as Errich is that much more hydrated, and nothing else.
Jun 8, 2023 1:58 am
"Well, that was ... disappointing.". He stows the intricate bowl into his backpack, "I'll hold on to this for now, might be worth something to antique dealers or historians. Shall we head back and continue on?"
Jun 8, 2023 11:46 am
"A foolish thing to do without knowing it's effects, I am glad there wasn't more disappointment." Wugruk shook his head, "Let's keep pressing on" he then moved back into scouting position and back into the hallway toward the next room.

Dante lifts an eyebrow, surprised to see the water in the bowl doesn’t have much effect. A smile dances on his lips as he says, "Well, you have to be adventurous sometimes." With a graceful stride, Dante joins the other two, following their lead as they advance into the next room.
Jun 9, 2023 6:27 pm
Following the only path forward, you come across a large room...
Quote:
This large room looks like it was once a storeroom for a building above. At the far side, you can make out what might have been a cage or cell at some point, but it is now full of crates and barrels. Four lizardlike creatures the size of human children are clustered around the door to the cell, trying to pry it open.
Jun 9, 2023 7:47 pm

Jun 13, 2023 2:41 pm

Sorry for the delay! Let me get the map going. There's not much cover, but you can slink along the walls. They're busy and focused on their task at hand. You'd have to approach for them to notice you.

"It seems our scaly friends have found themselves in quite a predicament," Dante remarks. Turning to his companions, he raises an eyebrow. "Should we lend a helping hand?"
Jun 14, 2023 4:37 pm
Wugruk wasn't sure if Dante was being serious or not, but talking would at least give them a better, closer, look at their possible opponents if it came to that. Besides, if it didn't turn to fighting then all the better.

Wugruk nodded in response to Dante, "Good idea"
Jun 16, 2023 2:35 am

Keeping one hand on the rapier hilt, he opens the door and steps away to let the kobolds enter, "After you."
Jun 28, 2023 7:53 pm
Two kobolds begin inspecting the crates and barrels and packing whatever's useful to them. You see they get some old cloth and what sounds unmistakably like a sack of coins. They toss aside some unrecognizable remains of food that either wasn't preserved well enough, or no amount of preservation could've kept it for however long this has been here.

One of them pulls out a shortsword from a crate, and as the little kobold brandishes what to him is almost a longsword, you see a piece of freshly dried fish fall out of its goodie bag.
Jun 28, 2023 9:41 pm
"...weapon! He's got a weapon!...and he looked confident!" Wugruk stepped out from behind the barrels. He didn't want to take chance that the Kobold grew bold and attached Errich.
OOC:
Weren't we here to find out what was stealing all the fish?
Jun 29, 2023 12:59 pm
OOC:
indeed we were
Eyes narrowing, "You there..." Errich exclaims, pointing at the kobold with the short sword, "a friend of ours sent us here to look for fish thieves, and I couldn't help but notice that fish fall from your bag. Care to explain yourself?"

The kobolds are instantly agitated, baring their fangs and gripping their spears. The one with the shortsword drops it, clearly favoring its own weapon.

It's hard to keep track of who's saying what as Errich hears several hissed utterances:
OOC:
Unless someone wants a chance at a difficult diplomacy check, we're rolling init!
Jul 1, 2023 2:21 pm
"I'm a bit tired of fighting, what say we make a truce. You stop stealing any and all fish, give back what you already stole, and I'll not only let you all go, but take everything else found in this room."

Rolls

Diplomacy - (1d20+4)

(18) + 4 = 22

Seeing Errich seem to negotiate with the kobolds, Dante steps out from behind the barrels. He stands tall and composed, his silken dark hair cascades over his shoulders and his amber eyes gleam with a smirk. "Yeah, that's right," He chimes in, his voice smooth and persuasive, ready to support Errich's proposition, even though he does not speak Kobold. "I'd listen to him if I were you."
Jul 2, 2023 1:08 am
The speaker negotiates:
OOC:
Are the private notes driving everyone crazy? XD
Jul 2, 2023 8:00 pm
Keeping eyes on the kobold leader, but speaking behind him, in Common, "Wugruk, Dante, seems our lizard friends here were stealing the fish but have promised to stop. Shall we take their leader on his word?"

Was Errich's last comments made in common? If not then I am not sure Dante or I have heard anything to...say anything to lol

OOC:
whoops, good point point lol. Post updated.
Jul 3, 2023 12:06 pm
Wugruk took a less defensive posture and straightened up a bit, "If ye feel comfortable they are not lying lad, then I think we should. Are they interested in learning to fish? You know the old dwarven saying, 'Mine a man some ore he'll make a blade once, teach a man to mine and he'll make blades the rest of his life', has a double meaning in the philosophical circles, but I always took it at face value"
Jul 9, 2023 4:59 am
"Well said, Wugruk," Dante responds, his voice carrying a touch of admiration for the dwarf's wisdom. "Indeed, teaching someone a valuable skill can change the trajectory of their life, and perhaps these little reptilian rascals could benefit from learning the art of fishing."

He glances briefly at the kobolds, assessing their reactions and demeanor, before continuing. "If they are willing to abandon their thieving ways and embrace the opportunity to learn and grow, then perhaps we can give them a chance to prove their newfound integrity. After all, second chances can lead to remarkable transformations."
Jul 11, 2023 4:01 am
"My companions and I are agree that you stop stealing everything, including the fish, and not only do we let you live, but teach you a valuable lesson in fishing and second chances.". Holding out his hand to the leader, in a readied shake, "Deal?"

The leader seems skeptical. "I hope that this works. We remain underground for good reasons. Surface dwellers do not often look kindly upon us." Nevertheless, he steps up to the handshake, which is surprisingly strong for his size. "Thank you."
OOC:
So the beginner's box is basically a dungeon crawl with 19 rooms. This was room 7. XD
If you'd like to continue, I could spin this off into another timeline based on your success... or you could delve deeper.
Jul 12, 2023 2:48 am
OOC:
I'm down for either. Dante, Wugruk?
Jul 12, 2023 2:41 pm
OOC:
I am also down to continue exploring, I feel like our benefactor would want to know of this place and what lurks down here. Plus we need to get the kobolds introduced and integrated with the surface dwellers right?
Jul 13, 2023 4:38 pm
You watch the kobolds leave through a hallway on the northwest side of the room. It's the only way to go. Will you follow them closely, or from a distance?
Jul 14, 2023 1:39 am
"We should stay close, in case they were being dishonest" Wugruk said quietly to Dante and Errich
Jul 14, 2023 7:39 am
Dante nods. "I agree. Let's stay close."
Jul 14, 2023 2:45 pm
OOC:
Let me know if you're trying to be stealthy or just walk right behind them. Got the secret rolls below in case you want to be unseen.

Rolls

Wugruk Battleborn: Stealth (Dex) - (1d20+1)

Dante Everett: Stealth - (1d20+2)

Errich Freeshadow: Stealth - (1d20+7)

Jul 14, 2023 2:50 pm
OOC:
Honestly, I don't think we need to be stealthy, they are supposed to be 'friendly' now so they shouldn't have issues with us following them.
Jul 14, 2023 5:36 pm
OOC:
Agreed, non stealthy. And if they cause issues we get stabby
Jul 16, 2023 4:20 pm
You turn the corner to see the last Kobold not walking, but leaping into the threshold on the end of the hall. They all look back and, without a word, hurriedly continue their trek into the dark room beyond.
Jul 16, 2023 5:36 pm
"That was strange yes? Maybe some sort of trap?" Wugruk said regarding the Kobold leaping into the threshold
Jul 16, 2023 8:31 pm
"Sneaky, little hob..., er, kobolds.". Errich moves closer to the treshold and checks for traps.

Rolls

Thievery - (1d20+7+1)

(10) + 8 = 18

Jul 17, 2023 2:22 am
Expecting a trap to be there, Errich can easily make out the pressure trigger under the tile and disable it.
OOC:
Everyone take +88 xp for the kobolds and this trap =)
Jul 17, 2023 2:43 am
"Good job, Errich!" Dante says as Errich disable the trap. But a trace of annoyance tinges Dante's words as he continues, "Really, those kobolds could have at least given us a heads up about the trap. I don't think they like us very much."
Jul 17, 2023 3:37 pm
"Good job indeed lad!" Wugruk said giving Errich a hardy slap on the back. "But was that an act of aggression, or was the one Kobold left behind to show us how to jump over?"
OOC:
That's 332 xp ya?
Jul 17, 2023 4:18 pm
OOC:
328 by my count:

Quote:
The threshold to this chamber reveals a long room. Two stone statues of priests stand in the corners along one side of the room, facing a towering statue of a man holding out both of his hands, palms up. In front of this statue is a stone altar holding nine golden coins. A voice booms out from the statue.
"In my hands I judge the value of all wealth, raising up whichever is greater. One of these coins is a deception. Find it using only two judgments and receive my blessing."
The Kobolds are nowhere to be seen.
Jul 18, 2023 12:42 am
Wugruk was lost, on both the riddle and the Kobolds being nowhere to be seen. "Drats! We lost them"
Jul 18, 2023 3:23 am
"I guess we'll never know, though I'd like to think it was the latter."

Errich will look over the statues, see if he can glean anything that may help with the riddle.

Rolls

Religion - (1d20+0)

(7) = 7

Jul 18, 2023 1:29 pm
OOC:
As a player when I look at this riddle I get stumped too, there are nine golden coins, one of them isn't a golden coin, a fake. Because the statues hands work like scales, raising up whichever has the greater weight, we'd have to test each one in a brute force, so if we removed 7 of them and put one in each hand it would test them and if they were equal we'd swap them out for two more but that would only eliminate 4 of them leaving 5 to test. If we had 4 judgements then we could use this method. Unless the adderall hasn't kicked in yet and I am speaking nonsense lol

Any other ideas?
Jul 18, 2023 4:49 pm
OOC:
I'll roll religion for the others as well.

As for the tests, you can place any number of coins on either hand, and also leave any number of coins on the altar.
This is the statue of Abadar, the god of wealth and civilization.

Rolls

Wugruk Battleborn: Religion (Wis) - (1d20+4)

Dante Everett: Religion - (1d20+3)

OOC:
Any way with a crafting check I could determine the fake? Or perception just by a weight difference?
Jul 18, 2023 10:02 pm
OOC:
I'll allow a crafting check since Wugruk is well versed in metallurgy. But it'll be a hard DC, since this is basically a divine manifestation wanting to test your wits 😆
Wugruk is sure 2 of the coins are real. But then, the rest look pretty real too. 😜
OOC:
Think about the numbers here... 9 coins, 2 hands, 1 altar, 2 attempts...

I'll admit, I don't see anything written special about the alter? Did you write something and I missed it? I am sorry :(
Jul 19, 2023 3:23 am
OOC:
I'm not good with riddles in real life, let alone ttrpgs, ha.

Is there an applicable skill, as a thief, that I can use to tell which coins may be counterfeit?
Jul 19, 2023 1:51 pm
OOC:
The altar is just where all the coins initially are. And that's ok, the characters can know things the players don't. Let's see...
Working together to examine the coins, Errich and Wugruk eventually realize the first step they can take. They divide the 9 coins into 3 piles of 3. One pile remains on the altar, another goes to the right hand, and the last pile to the left hand.

After an expectant moment... neither hand raises.

Rolls

Dante Everett: Intelligence - (1d20+1)

Wugruk Battleborn: Intelligence - (1d20+0)

Errich Freeshadow: Intelligence - (1d20+3)

Jul 19, 2023 5:29 pm
"What do we make of this lad?" Wugruk said stroking his beard, "So one of the three coins is the fake That is sure"
OOC:
So if we do two of the remaining coins if neither one raises then the third is the fake one, if one does then it's the fake, thats the concept right?
Jul 19, 2023 6:11 pm
OOC:
That's it =)

A loud click comes from the other side of the room, where two doors wait patiently. One closer, on the right, the other at the end of a short hall, forward.

The first door reveals a small chamber...
Quote:
This small chamber contains an old wooden chest emblazoned with the symbol of a key. Behind the chest is a massive contraption of gears and pulleys that looks like the inner workings of some unseen device.
Jul 19, 2023 7:44 pm
Clapping the dwarf on the back, "Excellent job, Wugruk! You solve the riddle, we reap the rewards.". Looking curiously at the contraption, "...Maybe..."

Errich will walk slowly towards the chest to see if it's trapped, or if the mechanism behind it is the trap.

Rolls

Perception - (1d20+5+1)

(6) + 6 = 12

Jul 19, 2023 7:47 pm
The mechanism is not linked to the chest, and Errich does not detect traps here. In fact, despite its symbol, the chest is unlocked.
Jul 19, 2023 11:31 pm
He opens the chest and peeks inside.
Jul 20, 2023 1:19 am
Quote:
The unlocked chest contains the blessing of Abadar. Inside is a pile of coins, a rolled-up piece of parchment, and a small glass box containing a single emerald. The coins consist of 214 cp, 22 sp, and 3 gp.
OOC:
+80 xp for receiving Abadar's blessing =)
Jul 20, 2023 2:54 am
"That is quite the find there!" Wugruk said looking over the haul in the chest. "What do we think the mechanism behind the chest does?"
Jul 20, 2023 8:37 am
Dante's eyes light up with genuine admiration and delight as he looks at Wugruk. "That's very impressive, Wugruk! Good job on the riddle!" He exclaims, his voice filled with genuine enthusiasm. Seeing the treasure inside the chest, his curiosity is picked. He picks up unfurls the parchment, eyes scanning the page, "The words of Abadar, maybe...?"
Jul 20, 2023 3:49 pm
Dante recognizes this as a scroll of magic missile.
OOC:
Book says it's for wizards, but I'll allow Dante to cast it anyway. On a separate note, hope you don't mind the correction: his curiosity is piqued.
OOC:
Crafting check from anyone who'd like to investigate the mechanism, please.
Jul 20, 2023 9:08 pm
Wugruk looked over the mechanism, it wasn't a blade, shield, or armor so he was a bit outside of his realm of knowledge, but it was made of metal and if there was on thing that Wugruk knew, it should be metal.

While it's impossible to discern what exactly this mechanism activates, it's clear that there's something in the next room that is engaged by this set of levers and gears.
Jul 23, 2023 9:57 pm
"Oh sweet! Maybe this will come in handy." Dante says as he recognizes the spell. He tucks the scroll away, looking to see Wugruk and Errich trying to figure out the mechanism. "Maybe we should go see what's in the next room, and it might give us some clues to what this thing does."
Jul 24, 2023 3:40 am
Errich whistles in admiration upon seeing the emerald in the box. "Best to keep this safe." and tucks it into an inner pocket.

"Good idea Dante." and heads towards the next room.
Jul 24, 2023 6:32 pm
"Safe indeed, and I'll stow away these coins for safe keeping" Wugruk said as he emptied the remaining coin into his pouch. "I agree on taking a look in the next room"
Jul 24, 2023 8:10 pm
Having left the mechanism untouched, you come upon three different kobolds in the next room. They're all busy working in a practice familiar to Errich, even if its implementation has their own flavor: trapmaking.
OOC:
Stealth or diplomacy? =)

"We should try and speak with them, explain that their clan promised to change their ways" Wugruk said to Errich and Dante as quietly as he could so as to not give away their position.
Jul 26, 2023 2:58 am
"Dante, you have a way with words, perhaps you should take the lead. Wugruk and I can assist if need be." Errich whispers to the group.
Jul 26, 2023 7:28 am
Dante nods and steps up towards the kobolds. "My dear friends," He begins with a disarming smile, "I am Dante Everett, and these are my esteemed companions." His gesture includes Wugruk and Errich. "We have been sent here by the gracious Tamily Tanderveil, the owner of the fishery, to investigate the unfortunate matter of the missing fish. We have already had a productive conversation with some of your kin, and they have willingly agreed to relinquish their thieving ways."

"We come not as adversaries, but as potential allies," He continues warmly. "If you also choose to turn away from this path of theft, we offer our assistance and guidance. We'll teach you the art of fishing, so in the future, you need not resort to such means again. How does that sound?"
Jul 26, 2023 3:34 pm
They seem startled once Dante shows himself. One of the kobolds who was giving directions to the others steps up and concentrates on recalling his withering ability to speak in the common tongue.

"You have fish?"

"We don’t have fish, unfortunately. But we’ll teach you how to fish, which is even better! What do you say?" Dante says with a big smile, hoping to convince the kobolds.

"Oke, oke, what uh... what day? You come back, yes? We get more of us, go up, have fishing?"
Aug 7, 2023 1:27 pm
"Way to go lad" Wugruk said under his breath as Dante spoke with the Kobolds.
Aug 10, 2023 7:32 pm
It's becoming increasingly clear that, even though they've entered this agreement, the kobolds don't want you around quite right at this moment.
Aug 14, 2023 11:19 pm
"Why don't you all go and wait for us upstairs. We'll finish up here quickly, and meet you back?" speaking to the leader.
Aug 17, 2023 7:50 am
"That's right." Dante nods, agreeing with Errich, "We'll meet you back upstairs and we can go fishing together right after! Doesn't that sound fun?"

Aug 21, 2023 8:55 pm
"I'm not so certain you can. One of the spider's victims was a kobold. I think his name tag said Larry...maybe it was Jerry?. Anyways, completely eviscerated. Best to get out while you still can."

Aug 22, 2023 4:23 pm

Wugruk gets the same sense - these Kobolds have been working on their surroundings: gathering food, erecting barricades, setting traps... they probably aren't the only ones down here.

"Aye Errich, if they are serious about changing their ways then being free from those that would oppress them will mean they can turn from scavenging and protecting themselves to instead learning skills to subsist without stealing and killing." Wugruk looked back to the Kobolds, "And if they are not serious then these lizard people and fire beasts may still have been a threat to Otari once these ones were eliminated"
Aug 23, 2023 8:59 pm
"Yeah, I'm excited to meet these lizard people and fire beasts... And if we can help these kobolds move from being mere scavengers to becoming capable of helping themselves, then perhaps this entire escapade was meant for something greater than we initially thought."
Aug 23, 2023 9:10 pm
The kobold yells some commands, which Errich translates to his companions, down a set of spiral stairs:
"Three outsiders incoming! Lead them to the stinkers!"

He turns to the party and adds, in Common: "Trap here, here," pointing out what to avoid. "Go now, thanks! Yes, thanks!" Again the sweeping hands.
Aug 24, 2023 1:22 am
Narrowing his eyes, "Most appreciated."

Looking into the darkness of the spiral staircase, "The stinkers?"
Aug 24, 2023 12:49 pm
The kobold is already busying himself with the previously interrupted trap-making work, and ignores Errich. Whether on purpose, it's hard to say.
Quote:
The stairs spiral down deep into the earth before ending in a chamber that looks like it’s been prepared specifically to defend against intruders. On one side of the room, a table has been turned on its side to provide cover, while on the other, crates and barrels have been piled up to create a second barrier.
Aug 24, 2023 1:11 pm
"Are these Kobold fortifications, or 'the stinkers'" Wugruk said of the table, crates, and barrels.
Aug 25, 2023 12:51 pm
Two battle-tested kobolds peek over the table and grunt orders at the party, pointing beyond the barricade going north. You do notice there's an exit to the left as well.
Aug 25, 2023 3:24 pm
"I imagine the 'stinkers' are something else, my friend. Shall we see what's to the left?". Nodding at the barricade, "That doesn't look very inviting."
Aug 26, 2023 6:12 pm
"It seems like they want us to go over the barricade. Maybe we should go check it out."
Aug 27, 2023 3:40 am
Drawing his longbow out, "The barricade it is." and starts walking towards it.
Aug 27, 2023 1:57 pm
"Aye" Wugruk said, feeling slightly dumber for having asked the question to begin with as he made his way toward the Barricades to go around them.
Aug 28, 2023 1:39 pm
Quote:
Beyond the barricade, the passageway meanders briefly. The floor descends slightly and soon becomes flooded by a shallow pool of water. The water appears to be flowing out of a passageway to the right, and a shimmering blue light in that direction reflects off of the water there. The main passageway continues to the left, over the slight depression in the floor where the water has pooled. An overpowering stench drifts from around a bend.
Aug 28, 2023 6:52 pm
"What's that light there?" Wugruk says pointing to the shimmering blue light
Aug 29, 2023 3:56 pm

OOC:
Is this deep enough where it would make sense to tie a rope around me?
Aug 29, 2023 7:22 pm
The water becomes shallower towards that eastern chamber, flowing out of it and pooling near where the party stands. The pool is shallow, not even knee-high for Wugruk. To continue north, one would just have to hop up on the small ledge. The path into the eastern chamber is unobstructed, if wet.

The orb in the southwest is made of brown earth and stone, whereas the one in the northeast looks to be made of glass, and is filled with a swirling cloud. The orb in the far corner holds a roaring flame; opposite that orb are shattered remains and the water that flows down the passageway to the northwest.

Looking over the orbs, his eyes stop at the broken one, "The four elements. I deduce the broken one held water. Perhaps I can put it back together..." and heads to pick up the broken pieces.

"If the broken one held water, and it has created this stream, then what would the others do if they were broken?" Wugruk's curiosity was not enough to drive him to test it, but still it intrigued him.

With a crackle and pop, smoke billows from the fire orb.
OOC:

Kneeling and peeking over the side of the pillar, Errich looks curiously at the sizzling orb. He grabs a medium sized pouch from his belt and fills it with the nearby water, drawing the strings closed. perhaps a good dousing will do.
OOC:
I'm going to Ready an action, if the orb moves toward us or seems like a threat, I'll spin and throw the water bag at it.
Sep 1, 2023 4:42 pm
The initial puff of smoke doesn't go away, instead building up and obscuring whatever's within.
OOC:
Wugruk's turn!
Sep 2, 2023 12:52 am
OOC:
What is in the center of the room there, I may have missed it if you mentioned it.
Sep 2, 2023 1:46 pm
OOC:
No mention of it. Seems to me just an obstacle but I'm happy to ignore it. =p
Sep 2, 2023 11:51 pm
Wugruk was unsure of what was happening, or how he could help, so he stood ready, raised his shield, and waited to see what happened next.
OOC:
Not sure what there is to do here save for investigating those other orbs perhaps? But for now I'll ready and action to attack if an enemy presents itself, and raise my shield.
Sep 4, 2023 6:02 pm
"Uh oh, this doesn't look too good." Dante says, eyeing the sizzling orb. "Looks like it's going to explode..."
OOC:
Thanks for rolling for me :)
Sep 5, 2023 1:29 pm
The flame and smoke roar, advancing with fury against Wugruk as flashes of orange and red streak across the billowing black soot.
OOC:
For those attacking with your readied actions, please roll a flat check (DC 5) which must succeed before the attack can hit.
OOC:
Wugruk's AC is actually 20 with the shield raised, right? idk where I got 19 =p

Errich twirls and whips the pouch at the oncoming fire orb, hoping to intercept before it reaches Wugruk
OOC:
not sure what other modifiers I would get to an improvised weapon, though not really expecting it to do damage I guess.

Errich hits the creature squarely, and from within the smoke you hear a screech. The smoke momentarily gives way to cleaner vapor, and within the cloud you see something that looks like another giant rat, but made of burning hot coals!
OOC:
I've caused your pouch to stop the rat in its tracks and cost its actions as it reels from the water. No damage, however.
@Manhattan Dante's up!
