Chapter 2 - Independent Learning

Mar 22, 2023 9:15 am
As Tannis leafs reverentially through Zanros' spellbook, it becomes immediately apparent why Zanros repeated a year at the Academy: not only was his spellbook a mess, the untidy spidery script interspersed by doodles and drawings, but it appears he was putting most of his efforts into learning magic not on the syllabus. For each spell with a name Tannis recognises, there are two more he has never heard of. The page after Illusory Script is a spell titled The Sick Note Spell. In the middle of the page describing the Invisibility spell there is a side-box titled Wobbly Table, that purports to magically reduce the length of one leg of a table or desk. Even the official spells seem to be adapted for Zanros' trickery - against the Magic Mouth spell are marginalia on how to get the spell to speak in the voice of someone else.

A knock at the door interrupts Tannis's delve into Zanros' trick-filled life.

"You didn't pop down for breakfast, so I brought it up. I hope that's OK. Would you like me to bring it in? Only if you're decent of course. I've warmed everything up. You really should eat and rebuild your strength after all that's happened to you. Not that we're allowed to talk about that. Are you there?"

Tannis recognises the voice of the serving girl he met in the hall. Her habit of stringing sentences together in a torrent of words is unmistakeable.
Mar 22, 2023 9:37 am
Tannis will close Zanros' spellbook, using the Joker to mark his place.

"Yes, please come in," he replies, trying to reign in any frustration in his voice. This woman has nothing to do with his problems, and did not deserve to be treated poorly just because he was burdened. "Thank you so much, this is very kind of you."

Tannis will break from his studies long enough to eat breakfast, before returning to his work. He decides to look over his teacher's spellbook, trusting it will be -- at the very least -- more organized.
Mar 23, 2023 10:21 am
Gavarenth’s spellbook contrasts Zanros’ in many ways, immediately obvious from opening the cover and seeing a well-maintained index, organized first by page number, then by school of magic. Gavarenth had left ample space in the index, presumably expecting to learn many more spells. Tannis had suspected that Gavarenth’s true passion lay in the mastering of evocation magic. Such suspicions are immediately confirmed from perusing the contents.

Tannis turns the pages delicately, soaking in the beauty of it. The handwriting is laboriously neat and richly illuminated. It is half spellbook, half work-of-art. As Tannis lets the blank pages at the end of the book flip over, he notices a pocket set into the rear cover.

That's quite pretty!
Tannis grumbles a bit when he realizes his teacher had nothing noteworthy in his own school of magic. He had suspected that would be the case, but part of him still had hoped he would be pleasantly surprised.

However, out of curiosity he will inspect the small pocket in the back of the truly impressive book.
Mar 23, 2023 12:58 pm
The small pocket contains two sheets of paper, both are titled Summon Ghouls.

The first sheet has tear marks down its left edge as if it had been torn from a book. The page is heavily creased and dark with dirt. The black ink is formed into an archaic script that bears resemblance to common, but uses unfamiliar works and mixes word order. The text is annotated with skulls and at the centre of the page is a dagger pointing downwards with a drop of blood dripping from its point. The drop of blood looks as though it is real dried blood, but is shaped as a teardrop rather than the splatter of a drop of blood falling on the page. In the margin in a scrawl are the notes "take care that they not taste flesh" and "a pound of flesh will be your undoing".

The second sheet is clean and fresh. The text upon the page appears to the same spell, written in common in Gavarenth's neat handwriting handwriting and accompanied by abstract colorful illuminations.

It would appear that Gavarenth was copying and translating the original, but it is not clear why she was not copying into her spellbook. From scanning over Gavarenth's translation, Tannis recognises that this would be a challenging spell for him to learn at his current level of proficiency.
Mar 23, 2023 2:18 pm
"That is... unexpected," Tannis muses before neatly folding the papers as he found them and returning them to the pocket. Setting his teacher's work of art down on his bed, he looks over to Zanros' spellbook and has to smile in spite of the sense of loss.

Zanros had not been Tannis' favorite classmate, as his jokes tended to grate. However... at this point he felt closer to Zanros than anyone else from his school. Something about that moment on the battlefield formed a bond that simply wasn't there before. His vow in mind, he settles in to pour through the prankster's spellbook, disorganized and... haphazard... as it may well be.
Mar 23, 2023 3:43 pm
Tannis pours through Zanros’ spellbook, the origin of many class pranks and some class mysteries becoming apparent as he understands the devious brilliance of Zanros’ magic.

He first catalogs the spells with names he recognises:

Minor Illusion
Disguise Self
Distort Value
Illusory Script
Silent Image
Cure Wounds
Detect Magic
Identify
Invisibility
Phantasmal Force
Magic Mouth

And then begins the more laborious task of noting down a summary of Zanros’ weird and wonderful collection:

Illusionary Chair (1st Level Illusion)
Creates an illusion of a chair so that people sit and fall on their arse.

Illusionary Doorway (3rd Level Illusion)
Creates the illusion of an open doorway in a blank space of wall, the room beyond the doorway is lit and the illusion has full perspective to trick people into walking into the wall.

Illusionary Food (2nd Level Illusion)
Must be cast on a rotten item of food. The spell makes the item of food look and smell fresh, and feel whole and firm to the touch. The illusion disappears when the item of food is bitten into or the item of food has rotted to dust.

Illusionary Writing (2nd Level Illusion)
Creates illusionary writing on a surface that can be seen by all but one creature. Casting the spell consumes a writing implement (pen, quill, piece of chalk, paintbrush) that must have been used by the target within last week.

The Sick Note Spell (2nd Level Illusion)
The spell enchants a writing implement to write something in the handwriting of its owner. The writing implement is consumed by the spell.

Homework Copier Pen (2nd Level Enchantment)
This spell magically links a writing implement to a book. Whatever that writing implement writes on other pages also appears in the book.

The Fart Chair (Illusion Cantrip)
The spell puts an illusion on a chair such that after being sat on for more than ten minutes, it begins creating the auditory and olfactory illusions of farts. It is particularly productive, if the person sitting in the seat is restless.

Disappearing Ink (1st Level Enchantment)
Enchants a container of ink such that the ink disappears the next dawn after being written.

Winning Hand (3rd level illusion)
Applies an illusionary change to a card to change its value, whilst keeping the design and appearance consistent with the remainder of the pack of cards.

Never-tied shoe (1st Level Enchantment)
Enchantment placed upon a shoe such that the laces come undone within minutes of being tied. If placed separately on both shoes of a pair there is a chance each time the laces come undone that the laces of the two shoes spontaneously knot together.

The Catnip Curse (1st Level Enchantment)
Curses a person to smell like catnip.

The Cockroach Curse (1st Level Enchantment)
Curses a person to frequently see an illusionary cockroach out of the corner of their eyes, but only during twilight hours.

Wobbly Table (Transmutation Cantrip)
Reduces the length of one leg of a table by a quarter of an inch.

A Duplicate in Sand (3rd Level Illusion)
Creates an illusionary duplicate of an object from an equivalent weight of sand.

You Can’t Miss What You Can’t Remember (2nd Level Enchantment)
The curse causes a person to forget they ever owned an object.

Ethereal Item (3rd Level Transmutation)
Causes an item to become temporarily ethereal and float upwards. Allows items to be extracted from a locked container.

Dreamt-of Wealth (3rd Level Transmutation)
Cast upon a person that is sleeping. An object that exists in their dream disappears from the dream world and manifests permanently in the physical world. The dreamer will notice that the object disappeared in the dream, but this is not usually enough to wake them. The caster gets visibility of the objects in the dream before choosing what to steal, but does not otherwise get insight into the person’s dream.

As Tannis reaches the end of his cataloguing, a thought leaps unbidden to his mind: Zanros, whilst evidently talented, was woefully unprepared for a battle.
Mar 23, 2023 4:07 pm
As Tannis reads through Zanros' spellbook, he cannot help but laugh out loud at some of the spells his classmate was creating.

Tannis is still sullen, but those moments of laughter are honest. In the long run though, they only serve to make Tannis regret losing his classmates even more.

With a heavy sigh, he retrieves his teacher's book and settles on a starting point for his furthering education.

Mar 23, 2023 4:43 pm
As Tannis begins to concentrate on copying his hastily written notes on the Sending spell into his spellbook he hears a knock at the door.

"It's me again. I brought you some lunch. I hope you're not sleeping and that I didn't wake you. You really should go outside and get some air. It's a lovely day outside. It'd do you good. Not that it's my place to say so. Are you there? Can I come in? Or should I leave it outside the door? Did you like the breakfast? Is there anything you don't eat, so I know for next time? I'm planning to cook lamb for dinner. Do you like lamb?"

Tannis realises that the day had gotten away from him as he delved into the spellbooks.
Mar 23, 2023 5:37 pm
"Oh! Yes, feel free to come in," Tannis replies, stammering a bit as he closes the books before rising and opening the door. "I just got busy trying to study is all. I can't return to my school, but that doesn't mean I have to give up magic."

He steps aside to let the serving girl in. "Thank you very much. You are most kind."
Mar 23, 2023 6:37 pm
The serving girl puts down a tray containing a steaming bowl of green soup and several large chunks of crusty bread. She picks up the breakfast tray and turns to leave.

"Denaothun hadn't mentioned you were magically inclined. That's good for us. We don't have many magic folk down round these parts. Just Ceta, but she's not really learned. And that hermit chap upriver, but don't see much of him. I'm sure you'll come in dead handy. Can you make fireworks? Or bring any excitement to my life? I guess that's too much to ask. Sorry, shouldn't disturb you from your studies. I just keep talking y'see, can't help myself. Denaothun's always telling me off for talking too much. But always so quiet around this keep. And this town. Nothing interesting to gossip about. And now there is something to gossip about, you that is, I'm not allowed to say a thing. There I go again talking. Sorry to disturb, I'll be off."
Mar 23, 2023 6:55 pm
Tannis offers a small smile. "No no, it's quite alright. I'm not particularly powerful yet... if I was, perhaps I could have saved some of my classmates..." Sadness plays across his face, before he shakes his head and continues. "I know a bit though."

He will take the breakfast tray from her and set it down before picking up his staff from where it was resting by the head of the bed. Tannis will use Prestidigitation to show a variety of effects -- from gusts and sparks, to making illusory trinkets appear and disappear, to warming and then chilling the water she had delivered. Using his dagger, he will slice his robe only to mend it, and then cause his dagger to glow with light. After that, he will Misty Step across his chamber and walk back to her. "I can also heal injuries. Well... smaller injuries. There are also a few other things I've learned, but if I show you everything now, I won't have anything interesting for next time."

He offers a smile, but with that he will let her get back to work so she doesn't get in any trouble.
Mar 23, 2023 8:00 pm
For the first time in what must certainly be a very long time, the serving girl is lost for words. Her jaw drops at the demonstration, before an enormous grin spreads across her beaming cheeks. Her eyes sparkle with delight.

As Tannis finishes his display, she whispers in slow deliberate words unlike her normal pattern of speech "Anything you need, you let me know." following up in her normal voice "I'm Angela by the way."

With that she gives a light bow, picks up the breakfast tray and leaves.

Mar 23, 2023 8:32 pm
Tannis can't help but smile as Angela leaves. He will take time to eat his lunch, dipping the bread in the soup and trying to take an actual break from his studies. By the time he is finished, however, the urge to get back to the books is almost overwhelming. He returns to properly copying down the sending spell and practicing with it. He will practice sending Archmaster Sternova brief messages.

"Practicing the sending spell," and "very sorry, still practicing" being commonly sent. Tannis will be mindful not to burden the head of the school though, as he is a busy man.

The truth is, Tannis can only cast the spell a limited number of times, but that's an acceptable limit.
Mar 24, 2023 7:24 am
"Glad that you're practising. Your voice is a little muffled" and "That's less muffled, but your voice is high pitch. Keep up the good work" come back the replies in turn.

By dinner time Tannis has mastered the Sending spell and has completed writing into his spellbook. Another tray of food arrives - roast lamb and a double-helping of sticky toffee pudding - together with Angela's still-beaming smile.

"I spoke with Denaothun before - he's been busy with his paperwork, but will speak with you on the morrow. Anything you need before I retire?"
Mar 24, 2023 1:32 pm
Tannis offers a smile. No, I think I am good for now. Besides, you deserve your rest. I've no doubt that you work hard, and I'd hate to prolong your day. Thank you, Angela."

OOC:
What's Tannis up to? Shall we skip to meeting with Denaothun the next morning?
Mar 24, 2023 5:02 pm
OOC:
Studying. He's going to be doing a lot of that. Skipping to the meeting is perfectly fine.
Mar 24, 2023 7:53 pm
Tannis continues his studies late into the evening, beginning working on deciphering the Lightning Bolt spell. Finally exhaustion catches up with him and he extinguishes the writing-desk's candle and turns in for the night.

Tannis is sat in class. Gavarenth is at the blackboard explaining the art of the lightning bolt. Another evocation spell. Why won't she get to the material that Tannis craves? Zanros is flicking pieces of scrunched up paper that turn into origami birds mid-flight, whirling around. One paper bird lodges in Florithe's hair. The teacher holds up her spellbook to the class, but instead of the familiar golden tome, it is black and decorated with the image of a dagger pointing downwards above a single teardrop of blood. A thin line of glowing red appears at Gavarenth's left shoulder and extends slowly across to her right hip. She is still talking, still teaching. The line meets her right hip. She is still explaining the spell. Her body above the line begins to descend diagonally downards. She is still teaching.

Tannis wakes with a start. There is a cold sweat on his brow. Autumn's cool light creeps under the curtains. He dresses and resumes his studies. A breakfast tray appears a short time later. After which Tannis readies himself and makes his way to Denaothun's study. Entering, the two exchange morning pleasantries, before Denaothun steers the conversation:

"Did you have the opportunity to connect with Danrer? Master Sternova, I mean. He said had something to offer you that might go some way to mitigate the situation you find yourself in."
Mar 27, 2023 4:51 pm
"Yes, Sir. Archmaster Sternova and I spoke. He provided me a spell useful in contacting him directly. Nothing as thorough as how he can speak to others, but it makes him aware I am ready and available. I believe he means to tutor me, even over whatever distance seperates us. I am thankful for that. As I am thankful for your hospitality, Sir. However..." Tannis' voice trails off a bit as he mulls over his next words. "I don't feel right simply taking. I know some healing magics, and while I am not as proficient as a proper cleric, I would be happy to use my abilities -- healing and otherwise -- in service to Southam for the foreseeable future, Sir."
Mar 27, 2023 7:57 pm
"That is a generous offer Tannis, this town would certainly benefit from your services. Make sure you don't put Ceta out of business though", he gives a small chuckle to himself. "As it happens I did have a favor in mind, when you feel your strength returned. It's a task requiring a man of learning, such as yourself. The farmers on the northern slopes of the valley have been complaining about a blight affecting the trees. I have this book here."

He lifts a dusty book from his desk.

"This book details a number of different tree blights and their various symptoms. It is simply a matter of travelling to the northern slopes and comparing the symptoms you see to those in the book. Once we know what we're dealing with we can devise a plan of action. I would go myself, but I seem perpetually buried in paperwork. You can borrow one of the guard's horses. Do you ride?"
Mar 27, 2023 8:28 pm
"I would much rather work with Ceta, when help is needed. As for riding, I don't. I mean, I suppose I do but not well. I'm perfectly fine with walking out though, Sir." Tannis assures the Governor. "I can leave straight away."
Mar 27, 2023 8:52 pm
"That's very good of you. I'm sure Angela would prepare you some provisions were you to ask. Take the north road from the town across the Soverbot. Follow the road, but before it goes through the gap in the hills turn to your left and head west. The woods are a couple of miles off the main road. There are plenty of tracks to follow. If you meet any of the farmers they'll be sure to show you."

"Don't stray too deeply into the woods. There are some druids that live there. They can be impolite if they think you a trespasser."
Mar 27, 2023 9:27 pm
"Thank you, Sir. I will gather my belongings and set about leaving forthwith." With that, Tannis will stand and retrieve the book on tree blights (although, surely there is more than just information on tree blights contained within) and return to his quarters to prepare.

He will take all of his books, not wanting to leave any spellbooks behind. He will inform Angela of his departure as well. "I will let you know as soon as I return," he assures her.

With a loaded ruck and his staff in hand, Tannis sets off for the north road, the Soverbot, and the farmlands in question.
Mar 28, 2023 1:44 pm
Leaving the keep, Tannis makes his way across the bailey. Elboth, one of the town guard that Tannis had met two days previous, is guarding the castle gate. He offers Tannis a nod of acknowledgement.

Tannis winds his way through the town's narrow streets till he find the main road heading north. The townsfolk watch him intently as he goes past. Reaching the banks for the Soverbot, Tannis crosses at the main bridge, a sturdy structure in stone, with three large arches. From the top of the bridge he enjoys the view north across the Soverbot valley. Ripe crops wave gently in the mid-morning breeze. Farmers are hard at work collecting the harvest.

As he looks out across the peaceful valley, Denaothun's words replay in his mind "I have told the people that you remained here when the Eastern Army returned to Newbore City to help defend the people in case of more trouble." The words "Eastern Army returned to Newbore City" echo again. There was no such return. Only death.

The sun glinting from behind a passing cloud brings Tannis's focus back to the present and the task at hand. He follows the road north, passing several carts laden with harvest headed out of the valley. The people he passes smile and look upon Tannis with curiosity, but none venture to start a conversation.

After a few miles, the road begins to ascend into the gentle hills that form the valley's northern border. A cart track to the left wends its way through fields towards a distant line of trees.
OOC:
Please excuse the "Tannis remembers" retcon - it's an important angle if forgot to cover in the conversation with Denaothun
Mar 28, 2023 1:52 pm
OOC:
No worries!
As Tannis has his first interactions with regular people since the battle, he cannot help but shake his head as he remembers the cover story the governor told.

I am one man. What do they think I could do against an entire army, if that were to actually happen? People... people just want to believe they are safe. Which makes it easy for them to believe anything, because they want to believe.

Nevertheless, when he reaches the cart track Tannis makes his way towards the trees, hoping to determine the source of the blight.
Mar 28, 2023 7:29 pm
Tannis makes his way along the track as the sun approaching its autumnal zenith. Farmers to the left and right are busy with scythes and sickles, or loading produce into carts.

Before he reaches the tree-line Tannis is assaulted by the smell of decay. Moving closer, he sees leaves curled with browning edges, patches of bark that have dropped off leaving exposed wood. In a couple of places he sees a black ooze weeping from wounds in the wood; one area where bark has fallen reveals a mass of grey-green larvae feasting on the mulched wood.
OOC:
Attempts to discern the nature of the blight will require Nature and Investigation checks
Mar 28, 2023 9:35 pm
Tannis will spend a bit of time poking around the treeline before settling on a course of action.

"First thing first, let's verify the source of the blight is natural," he mutters as he pokes some of the leaves and fallen bark with the end of his staff.

With a few words of focus, and corresponding gestures with his free hand, Tannis exhales slowly and opens his senses up to the world of magic around him. He will spend his time -- the duration of the spell -- walking amongst the blighted treeline.

When the spell runs out its duration, he will open the book provided by the Governor and start attempting to research based on the symptoms presented by the trees.

Mar 29, 2023 10:50 am
Upon casting the spell Tannis sees a hazy outline of dark purple around the affected trees, denoting the presence of necromantic magic. The grey-green larvae appear almost pure purple in color, and the black ooze is strongly highlighted.

Walking through the trees, Tannis notices something else. The trees deeper in the woods are clad in a gentle green aura, suggesting abjuration magic, and appear untouched by the blight. Where these two auras meet Tannis sees a swirling battle of color.

As the magic ebbs, Tannis retrieves Denaothun's book from his bag. He reads the title:

The Afflictions of Plants, Second Edition, A Treatise On The Various Afflictions Of Plants With Details On The Symptoms Thereof And Remedies Thereto

Flicking through the pages, Tannis sees many references to curled and browning leaves, to bark shedding, to infestations of insects. But no mention of any affliction linked to magic.

"I doubt that book will help" comes a deep, rumbling voice from behind him.
Mar 29, 2023 1:08 pm
Tannis nods. "The book seems to be focused on natural afflictions, while this... whatever it is... seems magical in nature. That said," at this point, Tannis closes the tome of botanical knowledge and returns it to his bag, turning to face the source of the voice, "I would hate to not be thorough."

Tannis sees before him a stooped old man clad in discolored white robes tied at the waist with a mottled leather belt. He is holding himself upright with a staff of gnarled wood. Despite the wrinkled appearance of his face, the man's light blue eyes shine with energy and his face seems poised to deliver a wry smile.

"Ah yes, it is good to be thorough. An admirable approach to life." the smile breaks across his face "Did Denaothun send you?"
Mar 29, 2023 1:42 pm
"Yes Sir, he did. I am Tannis."

He wasn't expecting a point of contact, although the Governor did mention druids in the area. It makes sense they'd have a vested interest in this. Although, if druids with more experience hadn't fixed the issue, Tannis realizes he may not be much help... but he was here, may as well see what he can do.
Mar 29, 2023 5:32 pm
"Tannis. Tannis. Good to meet you Tannis. I am glad that Denaothun sent you. It is not often that he takes an interest in the natural world."

He pauses.

"I saw you casting a spell. Presumably to discern the nature of this affliction? What is it that you saw?"

"I suggest you come this way as we talk, the air here is not good for the lungs."

The old man begins hobbling deeper into the wood.
Mar 29, 2023 5:52 pm
Could be genuinely helpful, or I could be walking headlong into a trap. And, deeper in the woods, fewer people would see a thing. Splendid.

Tannis can't help it, but the battle has left him on edge... perhaps a little paranoid. He sees the potential for death everywhere. His body feels like he is constantly on the verge of fight or flight, and his mind works overtime hunting for any sign of danger or betrayal.

He steels himself, tightening his grip on his staff as he follows the old man into the woods. "Necromancy. It isn't much, but it's a starting point. I did notice there seemed to be abjuration magics further back, presumably to fortify the trees and halt the spreading of whatever this malady is.

The governor mentioned druids in the area. If I were to make an assumption, it would be that they were responsible for the fortified line of defense."

As he walks, Tannis will take note of distance and direction, in case the need arose to make a hasty exit.
Mar 29, 2023 6:16 pm
"Necromancy, yes, yes. That's it. And abjuration you say." he mulls each word as if talking to himself, lost in his own thoughts "Fortifying the trees. And druids."

As the old man speaks Tannis passes the battle line of colors he had previously observed. The reek of decay disappears from the air, replaced by the damp clean air of a healthy wood.

"What more did Denaothun say of druids?"
Mar 29, 2023 10:10 pm
"Only that I was not to stray deeply into the woods, as tresspassing is not viewed favorably by them. Hence, why I stayed to the front edge of the woods while investigating," Tannis replies.

If he instructed me to follow him only to accuse me of tresspass... Tannis shook his head, dismissing the thought. Then, his eyes narrow. "Wait... I've been assuming this man is one of the druids. If he is not...

"Forgive me Sir, but how may I address you? I am certain the governor will want a full report when I return. I wish to take no undue credit."
Mar 30, 2023 7:25 am
"Trespassing, yes. That's probably the cause of all this", he stops walking.

"But it is not a matter of viewing favorably or not. The druids made and maintain the grove. The grove protects the woods. The woods protect the grove." he pauses.

"It is like when you are sick. The body takes to fever to burn away the sickness. And so the woods turn away those that might be deleterious to its health."

"Breathe the air here. You will see we benefit from the grove's protection, even this far away. That necromantic affliction is but skin deep. A rash that we must soothe with ointment, but not a deep wound."
Mar 30, 2023 12:52 pm
Tannis looks around, taking in the view of the woods as he listens to the old man. "And what ointment treats this rash? Because surely even if it is not a deep wound, we do not want it to persist."

"If I am right about its cause, a little honey might do the trick. And you might be the right person to deliver the remedy, were you to be so inclined" a wry smile spreads across his face.
Mar 30, 2023 3:13 pm
"Please elaborate, Sir," Tannis replies, unable to shake the feeling something was going to happen.
Mar 30, 2023 5:53 pm
"I am glad to see they still teach some manners to the youth these days. Did you study at Alnerwick?" he continues talking before Tannis has chance to reply to the question.

"My suspicion is that this rot is the handiwork of Hadud. A curious old fellow that lives up near the headwaters of the Soverbot. He has cause now and then to travel across our woods. Two weeks back he strayed too close to the grove in his travels and was set upon by the grove's defenders. I called them off, but he no doubt got the fright of his life. And this is his payback. At least that's my suspicion. I always thought him a dabbler in necromancy."

"My hope that a little sweet talking might bring him to his senses. We all have a place in this world, and must find a path to live in harmony with it. How do you reckon to your powers of persuasion?"
Mar 31, 2023 10:47 am
"Honestly Sir? Probably not the best. I'm more at home around books and classrooms... people, not so much," Tannis admits.
Mar 31, 2023 12:22 pm
"Tannis the academic, eh? Perhaps you should be back at school. Or in a library" his words are playful and said with a smile, not intended to touch upon Tannis' nerves.

"I can go myself. It is no trouble. " and then more to himself than Tannis, "Although I do hope that does not aggravate things"
Mar 31, 2023 1:27 pm
"I would be in school, if that were still an option. It's... a bit of a story. One I would not wish to burden you with," Tannis replies, and while he doesn't intend to betray his emotions he realizes well after the fact that his shoulders had slumped at the memtion of school.

"Perhaps I can accompany you, Sir," Tannis offers, shifting the focus of conversation back to the issue at hand. "I am uncertain what help I'll be, but my assigned task was to try and address the issue with the trees. I feel this Hadud fellow is certainly part of that task."

"You might slow me down a touch" he muses, "but I would be glad of the company. And I am sure you'll be more help than you give yourself credit for. You can tell me about your school as we walk."

He looks to a patch of sky between the branches, as if to get his bearings "It is sixty miles as the sparrow flies to the headwaters of the Soverbot. It will take us a couple of days. We may find a farmstead that might accommodate us, otherwise we'll be sleeping under the stars. Your school teach you owt about that?"
Mar 31, 2023 4:59 pm
"I know a bit, Sir. It will be nice to get some practical experience though. The classroom can only prepare someone so much, and then they need to put what they've learned to practice," Tannis says as he adjusts the straps on his ruck and makes ready to hike.

Three days march with someone I don't know. He seems nice enough, but in truth I know nothing about him. I should be wary.

"You said you called off the grove's defenders when they beset this Hadud fellow. Would that make you their... I'm sorry, I guess I'm not sure what the proper term would be... leader? The one they defer to, I mean."

"It seems you are already ready to go" says the old man, noticing Tannis's jesture with his ruck. "So let us be off" he begins walking. Although hobbling and relying on his stick, he maintains a reasonable pace, if slightly slower than Tannis would achieve on his own.

A few moments later, he acknowledges Tannis's question. "Leader" he turns the word over in his mouth. "I guess you could say that." he pauses "I might say friend. Or companion." he pauses again "I look after the grove. The grove looks after the woods. The woods look after me."

As the old man and Tannis walk through the woods, the old man will ask about Tannis's school, and how he came to be in the service of Denaothun.
Mar 31, 2023 11:27 pm
Tannis will hesitate when he is asked about school, and his reason for being in Southam.

"I... I am concerned that I should not tell you, Sir. It..." Tannis sighs and shakes his head, looking to the sky before continuing. "I do not believe in lying. However, telling the truth truth in this instance puts both of us at risk, so I have to trust in your discretion, Sir.

The official story is that when the Eastern Army returned to Newbore City, I stayed in Southam to render aid if there were any more trouble from the Felin forces. That's what I am supposed to tell people."

Tannis falls silent as they walk. The silence stretches on, to a point where any reasonable listener might believe he had reached the end of his tale. A few more seconds tick by, though, and Tannis continues... although his voice is softer. He simply cannot keep the sadness out.

"The truth... the truth is that my class and the regiment of city guard we marched out with met Felin forces in the Hildreth marshes of all places. It was carnage. When I came to... I think I was the last living person on the battlefield. There were already ghouls feasting. I found classmates, even my teacher... everyone died. I survived by luck, I took arrows and collapsed but they pierced my shoulder. I fled towards Southam, pushing through the night to bring a warning to the town in case they were in danger. I told the Governor, but collapsed from exhaustion right after.

By the time I woke up, the good news was that peace was attained when our side defeated the Felins at Redwick. The bad news... was that the battle of Hidlreth marshes never happened. Our King was not about to dampen anyone's spirits by telling them of the death toll. Which would have been perfectly fine, except for one small, inconvenient problem..."

Tannis looks directly at the elderly man.

"And I am that problem."

Tannis goes back to watching where he was going as they walk. "I cannot return to my school, because my school is in the capitol city. I cannot return to the capitol city, under penalty of death. I am the only proof of what happened, and the king... well, he's the king. I don't blame the Governor or the Archmaster of my school. I don't believe either of them enjoy the position they've been put in, but both would like to live and so they comply.

Still... the Archmaster has agreed to help with my teachings, even over distance. The governor has agreed to let me stay in Southam, at least for the time being. Both are trying to help as much as they can, even while their hands are bound. I do honestly appreciate their efforts."

After a period of silence, Tannis adds, "But, you can see why I was hesitant to tell you... I would not want to be responsible for anything bad befalling you, Sir. I just don't feel right lying though... especially for the benefit of someone who has lied to everyone and threatened my life."
Apr 1, 2023 11:20 am
The route that the old man leads Tannis remains close to the edge of the woods, allowing Tannis glimpses of the farmland in the valley below. The air is cool and refreshing, and Tannis notices abundant life within the woods - squirrels, sparrows, pheasant, a weasel, sable and deer all make an appearance, seemingly less shy than normal woodland life.

The old man listens intently to Tannis's drawn out answer. He turns to face Tannis occasionally as the tale is being told, and there is sorrow in his bright blue eyes. When Tannis is finished, the old man continues walking in silence for what seems an interminable period.

"I would caution you against telling that tale to every old man you meet in the woods" a slight smile flashes across his face before the sorrowful look returns. "But I have no use for your secrets, so it's safe with me." he pauses "It seems quite the pickle you have gotten yourself into. Not by your own doing of course. Perhaps you erred greatly in a past life."

"If we are to believe such thus things." he adds, talking more to himself.

He continues walking in silence for a few more moments before coming to a stop.

"I know it is hard for you now. But you might find in time that these have led you down a different path, perhaps even a better one. When a tree falls into a river, the water still finds a way to the ocean. And in time the tree goes back to nature, and the river is as it was."

He reaches into a aged leather pocket on his belt, and holds out a palmful of dark-skinned berries. "Here, have a berry." he says, taking one and popping it into his mouth. "You'll find them quite invigorating" he says as he chews.
Apr 1, 2023 2:33 pm
Thanking the old man, Tannis takes the berry and eats it.

"I don't intend to tell just anyone, but we are spending three days travelling together. That will include sleeping and extended periods of travel with no one else around. If you wish to do me harm, you will have ample opportunities regardless of my secret. Simply put, I either trust you or I don't."

While Tannis is still on edge, he struggles to make a conscious decision not to let his fears rule him. How well he succeeds though, is another matter altogether.
Apr 1, 2023 5:52 pm
The old man smiles. "You have trusted me Tannis, so I will trust you with something just as dangerous and powerful as any secret: my name is Passer"

"And I am happy to say that I have no wish to harm you, or anyone else."

True to his word, Tannis feels reinvigorated from eating a single berry. Any feeling of thirst or hunger is banished, and he feels ready to walk another ten miles.
Apr 1, 2023 8:39 pm
"It is my pleasure to meet you, Passer," Tannis says, relying on a touch of formality now that he knows his companions name. As they continue walking, the berry proving to be a fantastic pick-me-up, Tannis will ask about the individual they intend to visit.

"You mentioned this Hadud, Sir, but didn't actually divulge who he is. What can you tell me about him? Is he likely to be hostile? Dangerous?"
Apr 1, 2023 9:05 pm
"It is likewise a pleasure young Tannis" says Passer with a smile.

"The best description I have for Hadud is grumpy. He is a grumpy old codger. And he may very well be hostile. As to whether he's dangerous, I do not know the extent of his a dabbling. He certainly has some grasp of the necromantic magics. I do not know his story, where he came from or where he studied in the arts. He arrived in the valley one day, and has pretty much kept himself to himself."

"But with all people, there is always something they want. And if we can find out what that thing might be, and find some way to further that cause, we may be able to broker a deal."

"I know for certain one thing that Hadud wants, and that is to be left alone. His is the furthest dwelling in the valley. After his hermitage is wilderness, and dangerous wilderness at that."
Apr 1, 2023 9:13 pm
"I doubt we will be so lucky as to convince him the only reason we had to bother him is because of the trees, and if he were to release whatever magics he was responsible for it would give fewer people reason to seek him out," Tannis ponders, rubbing the back of his head as they walk.

"Appealing to his desire for solitude seems too easy."
Apr 2, 2023 8:07 am
"We shall see. And we can but try"

The afternoon progresses with idle conversation between Tannis and Passer, interspersed by periods of quiet as they walk through the woods. There is a gentle climb as they walk, and Tannis's glimpses into the valley below reveal the formerly salt-pan-flat valley floor giving way to greater undulation. The farms become less frequent, and there are pockets of trees and scrub in amongst the cultivated land.

Some time later, with the sun's light beginning to fade, Passer turns to Tannis. "What's it to be, shall we chance a farmstead or spend the night under the stars?" With a flourish of his fingers an ethereal image of a wispy cloud appears above his hand, and then disappears as quickly as it appeared. "Seems it will be dry"
Apr 2, 2023 2:17 pm
"The stars seem like the simplest choice," Tannis replies. "I would hate to inconvenience anyone."
Apr 3, 2023 7:01 am
"In that case, let us push on for another hour. We will find a suitable location in that time."

After walking onwards for nearly an hour, with darkness approaching, and the ground in front increasingly hard to see, the pair emerge into a clearing overgrown with briar.

"This looks perfect" says Passer "stay there a moment, whilst I make it a little more comfortable"

With that, Passer begins nimbly picking his way through the clearing in arcing paths. As he does so he begins to softly whisper words that Tannis cannot make out. After a few minutes of tracing these arcing paths, Passer stops at the center of the clearing.

"Come" he calls to Tannis.
Apr 3, 2023 1:33 pm
Tannis will move towards Passer, as instructed.
Apr 3, 2023 2:19 pm
As Tannis walks towards Passer, the briar parts like a crowd making way for a king's procession. Where he treads, the ground is soft with moss. And he feels a gentle breeze against his face, rich with the smell of wildflowers.

Reaching the centre of the clearing, Tannis looks back to see that the wall of briar has closed behind him, if anything more impenetrable that it had been.

Passer goes to sit, and the ground rises to meet him, forming a moss covered high-backed armchair.

"Please, take a seat" he gestures to Tannis to do the same.

Passer reaches out his hand and a bird-nest-like bowl is formed by the nearest plant. A moment later the bowl is full of fruits and berries. Passers takes a ripe-looking plum, and bites deeply, the juice dripping down his chin and adding to the stains on his formerly white gown.

"And help yourself to the food."
Apr 3, 2023 3:16 pm
"Thank you, Sir," Tannis responds as he takes a seat and helps himself to a piece of fruit.

"May I ask how you accomplished this? I admit to not being as magically experienced as I might otherwise wish, but in all my days -- such as they are -- I've never seen anything like this! Your way with the wilds is truly fascinating."
Apr 3, 2023 8:19 pm
"I have picked up a few magics over my time. But really, the magic of nature is already there. Around us. In the trees. In the earth. All I do is harness it."

"It is the same magic that created the grove, and which maintains it."

"Where we are here, we are near the outer edge here of the Ballater woods. We will leave that protection tomorrow as we travel. But tonight, rest easy, we are safe here."

With that, he tilts his head backward, and the mossy armchair reshapes, gently lowering Passer to the horizontal, whilst at the same time raising his feet. The vegetation grows up, forming a thick canopy above his body. Tannis can still see in from the side, but it's clear that Passer would be entirely protected from rainfall.
Apr 7, 2023 5:18 am
Tannis will eat another piece of fruit as he looks around at their protective little clearing, truly impressed with how Passer and nature seem to function in unison. Sitting in the cool air, he pulls his ruck -- with the spellbooks and foci of those he lost -- close, almost as a security blanket.

Eventually, sometime after a third piece of fruit, Tannis will attempt to lean back as he had watched Passer do, still holding his precious bundle to him as he does.
Apr 7, 2023 2:14 pm
Tilting his head back, Tannis feels the earth to be in tune with his wishes. It lowers his head and body gently like a mother laying a newborn down to sleep. His legs are raised in tandem. With a soft rustling sound the foliage forms a dense canopy above his head.

"Sleep well" Tannis hears Passer calling from his nearby cocoon. The sound is muffled by the dense foliage around them.

Turning on his side to get comfortable Tannis's mossy mattress responds in kind, rising up to form a pillow that lightly cups his head. He detects the heavy scent of lavender in the air, and notices that the temperature is neither too hot or nor too cold. Before long, the day's exertions catch up to him, and Tannis drifts off to sleep.

Tannis is standing ankle-deep in a pool of dark colored blood that stretches in every direction into cloudy darkness. The pool of blood is punctuated by bodies. Bodies of his classmates. Contorted. Defiled. Sullied. Ruined. Destroyed. Tannis feels a stab of pain in his heart as he looks at each body in turn. He tries to close his eyes to block out the sight, but he can't. The pain is growing in him, almost unbearable, all-consuming. Tannis feels warmth on the back of his neck, and turns to see the sun rising over rolling hills. The blood at his feet drains away, leaving earth. Earth that Tannis knows to be fertile. Around the bodies, Tannis sees plants growing at a fantastic rate. A moment later the bodies are almost hidden from view. A moment after that, the plants burst with color as flowers of all shapes and shades open in unison. Tannis feels the presence of his classmates in the plants as if they are somehow reborn.

"Good morning young Tannis. Did you sleep well? Help yourself to breakfast. We should break camp soon. The day waits for no man."
Apr 7, 2023 2:21 pm
It takes Tannis a moment to focus himself, before he sits up. "Good morning, Sir. I... believe something about your magic... or nature... even kept my nightmares at bay. It was... pleasant."

Thanking Passer as Tannis has breakfast, he instinctively checks his ruck to make sure his classmates and teachers' things are still there before standing and shouldering his pack. "Ready when you are, Sir."
Apr 7, 2023 3:18 pm
"Don't fear Tannis, I have no use for your trinkets" says Passer noticing Tannis checking his ruck. "All I own is this here staff, and this pouch of berries. And even if I were to lose them, nature would find a way to make me right. Don't put too much stead in what you own young man. It is what you are that counts."

Passer begins making his way across the clearing, the plants making way and bowing to him like doting courtiers.

"What are these nightmares that haunt you?"
Apr 7, 2023 3:32 pm
"Oh no Sir, it isn't you. I just... really feel connected to these spellbooks and foci. They belonged to classmates, and my teacher. Even in Southam, or as I walk, I check that they're still there. I'm not even sure what I think would happen to them in most cases, but I need to check on them."

Tannis follows behind Passer as they leave the clearing. "The nightmares? The battlefield. Those I lost. I watched my teacher be struck down, and could do nothing to stop it. I couldn't save anyone. I see them in my dreams."
Apr 7, 2023 4:03 pm
Leaving the clearing, Tannis glances back over his shoulder and sees that it is again as it was when they arrived, an overgrown clearing in the wood. All hint of magic has faded.

"I am sorry to hear about these nightmares." says Passer pushing ahead "It seems this battle has left a deep wound upon you."

"I do hope that it heals with time."

"Your classmates will have found peace in death. It is your path to find the same peace in life."

The pair continue their trek along the edge of the woods, the Soverbot valley to their left noticeably narrowing as they ascend into the hills. The sky has turned an overcast grey, and a chill autumn wind grips the air. After a couple of hours of walking, Passer stops and turns to Tannis.

"Did you notice that?" he says with a slight smile.

"Hmm? Oh... no Sir, I don't think I did. I'm sorry, I was sort of lost in thought." Tannis will start looking around, as if whatever he missed may repeat itself for his own benefit.
Apr 7, 2023 7:45 pm
Passer smiles again. "We passed through the edge of the Ballater Woods. Notice the decay attacking the trees. Ahead of us is the Hallgerd Forest, which appears unscathed by the blight"

"To you it might seem one continuous forest, but beneath the ground the roots of trees touch, forming great networks. Networks that do not interconnect from one area to the next. The whole of Balleter benefits from the presence of the grove. But it's protection does not extend into Hallgerd. And the blight seems targeted at Ballater alone."

"We must be a little more cautious now. Hallgerd is truly wild, and plays host to not just nature, but aberrations thereof."
Apr 7, 2023 8:12 pm
"I see..." Tannis muses, stopping to look behind himself and comparing it to what lies ahead. The change in the treeline seems subtle at first, but the more Tannis looks the more obvious it becomes.

Nodding with satisfaction as he notes the differences that make the line of demarcation between the Ballater Woods and the Hallgerd Forest, he turns to continue their trek. "Aberrations of nature, you say? Would I be correct in that the nature of the grove helps keep them at bay?"
Apr 8, 2023 4:22 pm
"Yes, the grove acts in a couple of different ways. Firstly the magical aura of the grove acts like a magical push, repelling such creatures, whilst allowing natural fauna to pass freely. Have you ever held two lodestones next to each other and felt the force as they push apart?"

He continues "And then there are also the more active parts of the groves defences. The active parts that gave Hadud a little scare." he smiles "They also keep away the aberrations."

"I hope one day to establish a new grove in Hallgerd, and bring its nature into balance. I have always wondered if there is some specific corrupting force at work in Hallgerd." Passes pauses, as if pondering something "But for now there is enough for me to do to look after Ballater."

The travellers continue on, Passer maintaining a path just at the edge of the Hallgerd Forest allowing the pair to see down into the Soverbot valley, whilst not being seen in return. Tannis notices the farms become more sparse, and arable farmland giving way to herds of sheep and goats. The land becomes more broken, the Soverbot shows several stretches of turbulent rapids, but would still be navigable by a skilled waterman.

As the day stretches on, the overcast skies grow darker, eventually giving way to rain. Passer pushes onwards, the splashing of mud from the path making dark stains on his white robes, his unkempt hair plastered to his face.

"What's it to be, young Tannis?" says Passer as the afternoon begins to dwindle into evening "Are you ready for another night under the stars? I can't promise quite the same level of comfort away from Ballater"

"Yes, Sir. A little rain won't be enough to deter me." Tannis offers the best smile he can muster.

"If this Hadud is responsible for the necromancy infesting the grove... might he be responsible for the issues with the forest? Or is it more likely he settled in the forest because it was more in line with his... tastes?"

"The strangeness of Hallgerd has been here as long as I have known, we can't lay the blame of that at Hadud's feet. But perhaps he was drawn to it. As are monster hunters from time-to-time. Although they tend to frequent the Hawley Mountains in their vainglorious pursuit of treasure and fame."

Passer continues walking and soon finds a suitable clearing, where a tributary of the Soverbot has made a small pool before continuing its journey into the valley below. Again he makes arcing paths across the clearing, hopping with unexpected nimbleness around the edge of the pool. Passer stops by the pool as he completes the ritual, and Tannis sees tree roots emerging from the water and knotting together to make a bridge. The old man walks slowly over the bridge, looking down into the water, before beckoning Tannis to follow.

Tannis notices that Passer's ritual has yielded an abode of lesser brilliance than the previous night. The vegetation again makes way for Tannis to walk, but underfoot is hard earth, rather than soft moss. Passer is sat on a stool of roots that looks less comfortable than the moss-covered armchair from before.

"This forest will not give up it's fruits so easily I'm afraid" says Passer, "but I can offer you a berry if you are hungry" With that Passer holds his left hand outstretched and waves his right back and forth over the left. A second or two later, his left hand is near overflowing with dark-skinned berries.
Apr 9, 2023 2:44 am
"Thank you, Sir. Those berries are surprisingly delightful." Tannis will have dinner, and make himself as comfortable as can be expected. He will use his own body to keep his ruck dry.
Apr 9, 2023 11:40 am
"Tell me Tannis, what is it that drives you in your study of magic? There are many that display a magical inkling, but few who attend Alnerwick."

Passer lays back as he asks the question, the roots adapting to form a chaise longue. With a wave of his hand, a roaring fire springs to life in the space between the two travellers. Tannis immediately feels the warmth against his face.
Apr 9, 2023 12:21 pm
"Magic seems valuable," Tannis begins, as he shifts to enjoy the warmth of the fire. It takes him a moment to refocus while listening as raindrops sizzle upon contact, as he is briefly reminded of his teacher...

No. Focus on the here and now.

"I have a large family. They work hard in their fields, but that work takes its toll. My hope was to lessen their burden, and I decided magic was my best chance to do that. Nothing lavish mind you, Sir. Just... enough that my parents have time to relax and enjoy life before they run out if it."

Tannis will retrieve his waterskin and drink deeply from it, replacing it before he continues. While thirsty, he uses the waterskin as a cover to verify the books and foci are right where they've been the entire trip. "My father... he may not leave the fields. His work is such a part of his daily life he may not give it up even if he could. Still... I'd at least like to make it so it can be a choice, not a necessity. The freedom to work because he wants to, not because the family suffers if he does not."

"If you want to help your family, why not pursue the druidic arts? There are many spells that can help those that toil in the fields: enriching the land; or molding the earth. The magics of those at Alnerwick are made for ivory towers, not field and forest"
Apr 9, 2023 1:50 pm
Tannis smiles without even realizing it.

"My father would never use magic to do his work. He'd see it as cheating. It would be one thing to give him the means to retire, he would see it as earned or as a reward for his hard work... but to use magic as a shortcut to make his work easier? He'd take great offense.

So, I decided to study healing. I know, I know, that's more often the perview of those who talk to Gods... and I don't. But I study, and with the right teaching even a magic user such as myself can learn a number of options to heal the wounded or the ill."
Apr 9, 2023 5:27 pm
"He sounds like an honorable man. I must admit I hold myself to a less stringent code in taking care of the woods"

"You know there are many powerful healing magicks amongst the druidic arts..." he appears to stop himself from that line of discussion "I was wondering what capabilities you might have to defend yourself in the event Hadud proves unreceptive"
Apr 9, 2023 7:03 pm
Tannis nods. "I would like to think I can handle myself if need be," he muses. "I have influence over life, and that means I have influence over death as well. I also recently learned to call on the power of lightning."
Apr 9, 2023 7:20 pm
"That is good to hear. But let us hope it doesn't come to that."

He rises from his chaise and begins collecting fallen branches. "Unfortunately I cannot sustain this magical fire whilst sleeping, so I will build it up to provide us some warmth and dry us out a little."

He adds the collected branches to the magical fire. Being damp, the wood hisses and spits, but is drying quickly in the heat of the magical flame. Passer collects several more armfuls and waits till the real wood has caught, before allowing the magical fire to die out. Tannis notices the heat drop off instantly, but there is still enough warmth to keep them in relative comfort, despite the rain.

"Sleep well Tannis" says Passer, turning in for the night.
Apr 9, 2023 8:15 pm
"Sleep well, Sir," Tannis replies.

He will sit up for a bit and tend to the fire, keeping it fed in spite of the rainfall. He is hesitant to fall asleep, but eventually he will wrap himself around his ruck to keep it protected and let himself doze off for the night.
Apr 24, 2023 12:34 pm
Tannis tosses and turns several times, trying to get comfortable on the knotty roots that make up his bed, whilst protecting his ruck from the rain, which continues to drizzle down. Finally sleep takes him.

Tannis is surrounded by bodies. He is standing on the chest of bloated corpulent form of a Felin soldier. Somehow he knows that underneath the bodies is a book. A book of great value and power. Tannis kneels down. Blood and bodily fluids spatter him as he pushes away the corpse. Underneath is another body. He pushes it to the side. There is another. Tannis is digging down through bodies. He sees the grey face of Zanros among the bodies, the lifeless eyes staring to infinity. He pushes aside Zanros's body. His actions are becoming feverish. He pushes aside the body of his teacher. And more and more bodies of his classmates. There are bodies all around him as he digs. The limp dead hands brush against him. Tannis sees his prize. A black spellbook adorned with a silver dagger above a drop of blood.

Tannis sits up. It is early morning. The rain has stopped. A pale light from a clear sky filters through the leaves. A magical fire crackles above the embers of the previous night's fire. Passer is sat cross-legged, his eyes closed, a look of deep calm upon his face.
Apr 24, 2023 1:08 pm
Tannis will check his ruck, making sure the rain did not damage any of the books contained therein. Afterwards, he will simply sit quietly and enjoy the fire, allowing Passer to meditate undisturbed.
Apr 24, 2023 1:48 pm
Checking his ruck, Tannis finds its contents intact and untarnished by the rain. His efforts to protect the contents proved successful.

After a short wait, whilst the warmth of the fire dries Tannis's clothes, Passer opens his eyes. Smiling, Passer says "Good morning. Thank you for your patience whilst I prepared for the day. I expect we will reach Hadud by nightfall, and I decided to make some preparations in case your persuasion skills don't hold up."

He stands and walks over to Tannis. "Take a handful of these." He holds out a handful of berries. "As well as quenching the appetite they have a small healing property, should the worst come to the worst..." his voice trails off.

"Shall we depart?"

"Yes Sir," Tannis replies as he pops a lone berry in his mouth. Standing, Tannis pulls his cloak around himself and shoulders his ruck for the trip. He will remove the pieces of chalk from his belt pouch, putting them in an outer pocket on his rucksack and taking a moment to use Prestidigitation to clean the chalk dust from the pouch before tucking the remaining berries into it for safety as they travel.

As they get walking, Tannis cannot help but ask, "Do you think it will come to that?"

Passer's face turns to a more serious countenance as they walk. "It has not been a week since you narrowly survived a battle with your life. And you are reverting to an innocent optimism as to the prevalence of violence in this world?"

"No, I do not think it will come to that. But it is not beyond the bounds of reason. And if I am right that Hadud is behind the blight, then he possesses powerful magic. Whilst Ballater resists, it does so with the aid of old and powerful magic, the blight is no doubt powerful. And so we must be prepared."
Apr 24, 2023 2:48 pm
"No sir, I know full well violence exists. My question was because I wanted your honest assessment of if you believed Hadud would resort to that. You know of him, I know nothing but a name," Tannis explains. "There is a difference between being prepared for the possibility of violence, and actually expecting violence. It changes your approach. If we expected him to resort to violence, I would question if talking was a wise opening strategem. If violence is just a possibility, I see no issues with discussion first."

Tannis lapses into silence as he walks, his mind going over his own spells even as he curses the fact he knows nothing about Hadud or where he resides.

"I know little of the man I'm afraid. I have never spoken with him. All I know is from the rumors of the people of the Soverbot valley. I have seen him often enough in his travels. But I see many things."

"In any case" his tone slightly more positive "we must presume his innocence until the contrary is confirmed."

The pair continue their travels along the valley's edge. The two previous days they had travelled in a roughly westerly direction, but the valley now begins to bend to the north. The hills on the far side of the valley are becoming noticeably higher and more rugged.

After several hours of travelling, Tannis notices a crowd of people in the valley below. The presence of a crowd stands out to him as until now the travellers had passed the valley's farmers in ones and twos.
Apr 24, 2023 4:35 pm
"What might they be up to, I wonder?" Tannis muses aloud as he spots the group. It certainly stood out. As he walks, he keeps an eye on them out of curiosity.

"Probably some old dear saw a bad omen in her tea leaves. I wouldn't trouble yourself with it." Passer seems somewhat more serious and resolute today. He seems on edge.
Apr 24, 2023 7:24 pm
"...perhaps..." Tannis says as he walks, glancing back at the group even as he continues on.

Noting Passer's subtle shift in attitude today, Tannis lapses into silence for the walk. He remains attentive to his surroundings, but also to Passer himself.
Apr 26, 2023 4:38 pm
Tannis and Passer continue their trek along the side of the valley. There are now almost no arable crops in the narrowing valley; herds of sheep and goats graze on sloping pastures. To Tannis's right the Hallgerd woods seem impenetrably dark - the high canopies allowing just a little light through to be absorbed by the mass of brambles and dense vegetation on the forest floor. The darkness is amplified as clouds draw in.

After two more hours of walking, Tannis notices that the travellers have now passed the limit of human settlement. The valley floor is lined with scrub and trees. Passer leads the pair down towards the river.

"We are not far now. Perhaps another half an hour along the riverbank"

Passer finds a path on the East bank of the river. It's much less than the river Tannis had crossed at Southam, perhaps waist deep at most, and fifteen feet wide. Still navigable, but only by a small rowboat.

The scrub soon gives way to thick forest, with knotted trees leaning over the river. Other than the babbling of the river as it bends around root and rock, the forest is silent. Tannis cannot see far in the gloom.

"Go away" the orc grunts.

"Sir, I am sorry to intrude, but we came to request an audience. "I do not wish to be a bother, but I need your help Sir."

The orc advances slowly, swinging the axe in a figure of eight with its right hand, then switching the axe to its left and doing the same.

He can see fear and hope in the orc's eyes, but as the darkness reaches them, the hope is sucked out into the blackness. The eyes seem like a portal into into a plane of darkness. May 1, 2023 2:54 pm
"Yes, you're right." replies Passer. Now that the orc has left his voice gives away cracks in what would otherwise appear a steely composure.

The travellers continue along the path on the north bank of the Soverbot. The forest is dark and quiet around them, keeping its secrets hidden from view.

After a quarter hour or so of trudging along the path, Tannis begins to hear the sound of rushing water. It is quiet and distance at first, but as they walk closer the sound becomes loud and urgent.

"We are nearly there - the headwaters of the Soverbot" states Passer in a matter-of-fact fashion.

A few moments later, bending around a clump of trees, Tannis sees a clearing in the woods ahead. The river broadens into a pool on the left side of the clearing and on the far side is a cliff, perhaps 40ft high, with a waterfall shooting from a cave-mouth. The right of the clearing is strewn with grass and shrubs. It slopes gently upwards to the same level as the cliff, and at the top of the house is a squat hut.

Passer pushes on, stepping out into the clearing. As he does so, Tannis hears a thud as a quarrel slams into the dirt at Passer's feet. The shot is accompanied by a gruff "Bugger Off", emanating from one of the hut's dark windows.
May 1, 2023 3:34 pm
"Sir, we know you don't wish to be disturbed. I don't want to disturb you. However, I was charged with finding out about a blight affecting the woods, and was hoping you would have information. "Come no further. I have another quarrel loaded" says the voice from the hut's window. The hut is wattle and daub from waist up, below which is a wall of stacked stone and mortar. The pitched roof is slate, in crudely cut uneven tiles. The nearest part of the hut has a single dutch door, and a window to the left. The window appears inky black - it is too dark for Tannis to make out details of a frame, let alone the occupant behind. The hut appears to have extensions on each side, set back from the nearest part.

"State your name."
May 2, 2023 1:44 pm
"I am Tannis Greycastle, sir."

Tannis briefly considers mentioning he is under orders from the governor, but decides for the moment to keep things concise and to the point.
May 2, 2023 2:37 pm
"I am Passer of the Ballater Woods" adds Passer.

"The woodland devils are coming to me now it seems." retorts the voice. "Will I have no peace?"

The voice pauses for a moment, before continuing: "Have you some means of illumination? It is rude of guests not to show their faces."
May 2, 2023 3:34 pm
"Yes Sir, but I didn't want to just start casting spells, I was concerned how that would come across. I'll cast the Light cantrip now Sir."

Tannis will cast light on his staff -- and for a split second, the first thing he sees as the soft glow illuminates the surroundings is the battlefield. However, as quickly as he sees it, it is gone and he wrests his focus back to the here and now.
May 2, 2023 3:56 pm
"Not one, but two spellcasters sent to trouble an old man in his retirement." says the voice, appearing to have lost some of it's sharpness "I see you are still early in years Mr Greycastle. Are you a student of this Passer? Corrupting yourself with druidic mischief?"

"He is not my student, although I would teach him if he were to ask" cuts across Passer before Tannis has a chance to respond. "He has gifts with magic that must be nurtured." Passer pauses "I see that you are not shy in expressing your frustrations at the druids of Ballater. I know you had a close call with some of the woodland defenders a few nights past. I am sorry for that, those creatures are not great of mind, and mistook you for an intruder. Had I arrived sooner I would have called them off. Once again I do apologise."

"For all I know, you set those creatures on me, and have turned up here with your lackey to finish the job" retorts the voice "How many more of your sort are lurking in the woods?"
May 2, 2023 4:24 pm
"I only met Mr. Passer once I began investigating the blight under orders from the governor. I cannot speak to what happened before I arrived, but I am only concerned with attempting to fix the affliction the woods are suffering. I ask for your help. If the blight gets worse, it will only draw more attention from people with far more power and authority than I possess."

Tannis hopes that pointing out the hermit has drawn attention to himself is not lost lost on him. Appealing to his desire for solitude seems like the simplest argument to be made -- and it's true, so it isn't as if Tannis is lying.

"Ah so it is your handiwork then!" answers Passer quickly, "Petty revenge after getting scared by a couple of animated trees!"

"Petty!" roars the voice "I nearly lost my left eye to those tree devils. I'll burn down that cursed wood of yours next time."
May 3, 2023 6:53 pm
Tannis interjects. "It may not be doing much, but it's doing enough that the governor wants answers. If I can't provide them, he may send people more capable than I am. That's no threat, Sir, I just want you to know it's drawn the attention of people much more important than me. People who may not wish to leave you to yourself."

He glances to Passer and shrugs. Turning back to the hut, he adds, "I do know a bit of healing... if your eye needs attention, I would be happy to try to help? I hold no ill will towards you Sir, I simply want to fix the problem as assigned so I can get back to my own studies."

Quiet descends upon the clearing following the young wizard's words. To Tannis's ears, his thumping heart is drowned out only by his quickened breathing.

Passer appears motionless, perhaps waiting in earnest to see if Tannis's words hit home.

The silence appears to stretch out. As if each grain of sand from a hourglass were drifting downwards like a downy feather.

When the voice breaks the silence, the anger has evaporated, replaced with... curiosity: "You speak wisely for one so young. Tell me, if Passer is not your master, are you a student of Alnerwick?"
May 3, 2023 8:45 pm
Tannis glances to Passer before replying to the question. "That is... a personal and difficult situation, Sir. I... was. Our Headmaster is kindly seeing that I am continuing my studies, even if I must do so remotely."

He looks around, taking in his surroundings as they are bathed in the glow of his staff. Before now, his focus had been on the hut... but with a seeming drop in the tension level, he steals a glance -- as much to make sure there were not orcs surrounding them as to take in serenity of the remote location.

"Southam has become my home for the time, which is how I was tasked with this. I know it is asking a lot, perhaps more than my station would allow, but I truly just want to resolve this peacefully and in doing so allow all three of us return to our lives."

After a pause, Tannis adds, "And know that my offer was sincere, should you need it Sir."

Tannis quickly scans the clearing, illuminated by his staff. It seems the epitome of the idyllic country retreat. The waterfall on the far side of the pool glitters with reflections of Tannis's light, the frothing waters at the base glowing white. By the edge of the pool, the waters are nearly flat. There is a stone-walled edge to the pool on the northern bank, with a stone path leading up the clearing to the hut. The forest hugs the clearing like a thick blanket, its deep darkness resisting the light. Tannis notices that lower level of the clearing, before the slope to the hut, is muddy and churned up in places. He also sees a pile of stones, the same as used for building the hut.

As Tannis looks around, another long silence pervades the clearing.

Finally a response comes from the dark window. "I will help you lift the blight. I have two conditions. Firstly, each of you must swear an oath of secrecy as to the origin of the blight. You must instead state that the blight was of natural origin, and was cured by the druid's nature magic. And secondly, I require that Tannis run me a simple errand, merely fetching something from the mouth of the Soverbot."
May 4, 2023 12:59 pm
"What is it you would have me retrieve, Sir?" Tannis asks, even as he looks to Passer questioningly.
May 4, 2023 1:27 pm
"The fine sand from the beaches near the mouth of the river. It makes the best glassware.", comes the voice.

"I will keep your secret. Not that you deserve it." says Passer through gritted teeth "But allow me to retrieve this sand, I can assume the form of a bird, and be there and back in a day. It would be a near ten-day trip for Tannis on foot."

"The boy looks like he could benefit from some time outside. Besides, there will be work for you to lift the blight once I tell you how." replies the voice.
May 4, 2023 2:02 pm
"I... would actually like to hear the steps for lifting the blight. Call it an academic interest," Tannis interjects. "But yes, I will retrieve your sand. I've never crafted glassware, how much sand do you need? I would hate to make the trip and not have enough when I returned."

"A bagful will suffice my needs."

"Swear your oaths and I will tell you how the blight may be lifted."
May 4, 2023 2:13 pm
"I swear that once the blight is lifted and Passer and I have left these woods, I will tell any who ask that the blight was natural in origin, and that ultimately it was the magic of the Druid that cured it, as is my oath," Tannis states.
May 4, 2023 3:45 pm
"You are careful with your words young Tannis." answers the voice.

"Would not a career in legal matters have suited you more than tinkering with magiks?" it asks rhetorically, before continuing "But I shall hold you to them. And you, druid, will you swear?"

There is a pause before Passer answers. His voice betrays frustration. "I swear to keep the origin of the blight a secret, and to say that it was cured by the magic of the druids. Now tell us how to stop it."

The voice replies, "To cast the spell, I walked the perimeter of the Ballater Woods, invoking the magic of death, and carving runes upon the underside of branches. I counted eight hundred and eighty eight paces between each rune, once you find one, you will be able to find the next. I first travelled west to east along the south border of the wood, so will know the direction to follow. Each rune can be healed with healing magic, or with the spell of plant growth. The blight will lessen with each removed rune, and disappear once the last has been removed."

After the remedy has been communicated, Tannis hears a clatter emanating from the hut, and a moment after an object files in a slow trajectory from the window, landing on the ground in the middle of the clearing. Once it lands Tannis realises that it is a bag.

"Here's the bag for the sand. Make sure you fill it nice and full."
May 4, 2023 5:19 pm
Tannis approaches the bag, and kneels by it. Picking it up by the side, he turns it inside out by pushing the bottom up and through the opening -- without ever reaching a hand inside -- before standing and rolling it up (still inside out).

"It will take me time to make the trek, but you will have your sand."
May 4, 2023 7:12 pm
Nothing emerges from the bag as Tannis turns it inside out, but Tannis notes that it is a well-made bag.

"Come Tannis, I think we have troubled this man enough. Let's be on our way" says Passer. He begins walking back the way the travellers came.
May 4, 2023 7:38 pm
"Agreed, Sir," Tannis replies as he falls in with Passer, following the elder out of the clearing.

He just wants... sand. As they walk, Tannis continuously rolls the idea around in his head. A bag of sand. Is it truly because Hadud just doesn't wish to make the journey? Why not have Passer get it since it would be faster? No matter how he looks at the situation, Tannis can't shake the feeling that things seem... odd.
May 5, 2023 7:28 pm
A few moments later, once the travellers are out of earshot, Passer puts words to Tannis's thoughts: "He is somewhat odd, don't you think?"

"I suggest we put a little distance between us and this place before we bed down for the night"

Tannis notices that the night is closing in. The darkness is not just from the density of the forest canopy above.
May 5, 2023 7:43 pm
"Agreed, on both counts," Tannis replies as he walks onward. "But, it appears the blight will be lifted and the woods restored."
May 5, 2023 8:07 pm
"If what Hadud says is true, yes. And thanks to your powers of persuasion. I am most grateful to you Tannis"

When the pair emerge from the forest the sun had set, and the last rays of light are visible beyond the hills to their right. Passer continues on a path along the side of the river for some time further, before stopping and turning to Tannis.

"Let us camp here. I'm afraid I will not be able to avail us of a sanctuary this night." he makes a small gesture with his fingers, illusory clouds drift past above his open hand, "but it will be dry at least"
May 7, 2023 8:42 pm
"We will be fine, Sir," Tannis replies, working to collect up some wood and start a fire for the evening.
May 8, 2023 3:35 pm
From nearby clumps of trees Tannis is able to collect sufficient wood to make a good sized camp fire. As he goes about collecting the wood he notices no people. The valley is populated by trees, scrub and land that has recently been used for grazing, but no grazing animals are in sight. Grey clouds linger overhead, but true to Passer's prediction, no rain comes.

As the night draws in, the travellers bed down for the night near the fire. All that can be heard is the babbling of the nearby river accompanied by the crackle of firewod.

As they prepare to resume their travels, Tannis will unroll the bag Hadud had given him and turn it rightside out. He will open it, and -- careful not to stick his hand inside of it -- drop some leaves in before closing the bag and tucking it in his belt.

"How are you feeling, Sir?" he asks Passer as he makes sure the fire is snuffed. The last few seconds have been a blur of action. Tannis's grogginess from sleep is banished by the sudden burst of adrenaline. The mandibles of the larva are embedded in his calf, the pain is excruciating.
OOC:
Apologies for the torrent of posts - Tannis ended up last in the initiative order. And apologies for cross-posting with your post - just got unlucky with timing there

Tannis has taken 11 piercing and 5 poison damage, but resisted the poison acting further. Tannis is grappled by the larva and is prone. To stand Tannis would first need to break the grapple. Being prone Tannis has disadvantage on attack rolls.

BTW, I toyed with whether Passer should cast Conjure Animals - I didn't want to be controlling so many creatures - but it was what Passer would do in the circumstances - even the odds

OOC:
No worries at all.
Tannis, in pain and irritated by the thing biting his leg, focuses his mind for a moment, sliding an arm through his ruck and then casting Misty Step to extricate himself from the larva's mandibles.

Once he has some seperation between himself and the gross little two-headed beasty, Tannis will cast Chill Touch at his attacker.
OOC:
Miss-typed the attack roll, so did it right.

There is a loud clunk as the mandibles smash together on the empty space left by Tannis. The larva wheels around to face the vibrations from where Tannis lands, and in doing so inadvertently moves out of the way of the ghostly skeletal hand that had appeared next to it.
OOC:
Nice use of misty step

Bear with me whilst I get through all the other roles - might not get to it today

Passer steps forward to the larva that latched onto Tannis's calf and strikes it with his staff, which begins to glow green as it flashes through the air.

The bears continue to attack, but those that previously tasted the larvae flesh attack with only their claws.

Tannis, seeing himself and Passer being pressed by the larva, has had enough.

"THAT'S IT!"

A few arcane words and gestures with his staff, and there's a brief crackle before lightning erupts from the end his staff, the bolt streaking across the battlefield hitting three of the larva and a summoned bear.

Passer's magically-imbued staff connects with the larva, causing a nasty squelch as a segment of its body ruptures in a spout of gooey liquid.

The two-headed larva, scorched by Tannis's lightning, succumbs to the bear's ferocious claws, leaving two larvae, one engaged with a bear, the other locked with Passer.

Tannis is up

There are two larvae remaining, one attacking Tannis, one attacking a bear. There's another bear that just dispatched the two-headed larva, which is not currently engaged in melee.

Tannis will rush forward to Passer's side, reaching out to touch the larva clamped into the old man's leg. As he reaches, he intones a few words and twists his hand around even as he reaches forward.

The larva's grey skin darkens beneath Tannis's touch. Veins of darkness spread out across its body. It's mandibles release Passer's leg as it thrashes in death throes before it collapses, twitching to the floor.

The remaining larva is quickly dispatched between two summoned bears and a well-placed blow from Passer. At a word from the druid, the bears move off into the gloom, patrolling the campsite.

Passer turns to Tannis "Let me take a look at that leg"

He kneels and touches Tannis' leg whilst whispering. Tannis feels the wound close.

Rolls

Cure Wounds - (1d8+9)

"Thank you, Sir," Tannis replies as his leg mends. "The bears were a nice touch," Tannis chuckles a bit to himself as he checks on his ruck and the contents therein.

"It'll certainly be a bit of a chore to fall back asleep after that."
May 18, 2023 8:38 pm
"I've always had a fondness for bears" says Passer, smiling. "They can be so gentle as peaceful. And yet so ferocious."

"You get some rest, I will keep watch. You've had your first taste now of what Hallgerd has to offer. Although it's not common for these abominations to descend into the valley. Perhaps we should move camp a little way - away from these bodies" He emphasises the point by poking one of the larvae with his staff.
May 19, 2023 1:29 pm
"Moving isn't a bad idea," Tannis replies as he gathers his things and then sets about ensuring the remains of the fire are extinguished properly. "Perhaps another hour's travel will let us rest more peacefully."
May 21, 2023 5:49 pm
"Let's get going then"

The travellers continue downriver through the darkness, illuminated only by veiled light from Tannis's staff. The summoned bears flank the travellers, loping across the grassland on all fours. The Soverbot burbles to itself, oblivious of travellers or their woes.

After some time of walking, Tannis sees a flock of sheep huddled together. They are startled by the bears and dash away in all directions. "I think these bears have accompanied us long enough" says Passer, and with that the bears disappear leaving a soft green afterimage for a brief moment.

"We must be closer to civilisation with this herd here" says Passer, "let's push on a little further, then make camp."

After another timeless period of walking through the darkness, Passer stops at a previously used campsite. There is a fire pit, but no fire. Passer brings one forth.

"Rest now Tannis, I will keep watch"
May 21, 2023 6:51 pm
"Wake me after a while, Sir. You need to rest as well," Tannis tells his companion before bedding down for (hopefully) the night.
May 21, 2023 8:29 pm
It is broad daylight when Tannis wakes. The night, and its horrors, have been dispelled. Passer sits watching the river, deep in contemplation. He appears to have healed his wounds, and even sewn up the tears in his tunic.

The valley is bustling with herders rounding their sheep and goats, the nearest perhaps half a mile away down the valley, faint bleating is carried by a gentle wind passing up the valley.

A lone oak stands near the campsite. Autumn has begun to claim its leaves, giving a rich array of colors in the the morning light.

A moment later, snapping from his trance as Tannis stirs, Passer turns. "How do you feel?" There is a hint of concern in his voice.
May 21, 2023 8:47 pm
"I feel well, Sir," Tannis replies as he sits up and checks his ruck. "But I could ask you the same. You have not rested."
May 30, 2023 7:42 pm
"I have not, but it seemed you needed it more. You have a long road ahead of you in fulfilment of Hadud's errand. And I must leave you to tend to the woods. To exercise this necrotic runes."

"You are close to civilisation here, you will not be further troubled as we were last night."
May 30, 2023 7:59 pm
"Promise you'll get a proper rest before you begin working on those runes, Sir. You need to be at your best, lest there is any trickery afoot."

Once Passer promises to rest first, Tannis will thank him for everything before heading off to collect the sand.
Jun 9, 2023 1:17 pm
Tannis' intent is to simply follow along the Soverbot itself until he reaches the mouth. It seems to be the easiest way to navigate his path, and will provide fresh water along his journey.
