Grandmaster's Game (D&D 5E) - Closed

Alright everyone, bear with me.

I want to learn the DMing aspects of GP. The best way to do that is... to DM a game. (We won't talk about how NOT tech savvy I am. Lol)

That brings me to this game idea...

The Grandmaster, a cosmic and otherworldy being of great power, has again grown bored. Nothing good ever comes from that...

To that end, he has collected eight of the greatest adventurers from across a multitude of realms. They will be pitted against each other, with the last warrior standing being promised a touch of divinity.

This is an arena fight. It's a series of 1v1 PvP battles between level 20 characters. Winner advances to the next round, while the loser... well, try not to lose.

There won't be a story to speak of. While you are welcome to get as involved with your backstory as you want, understand it won't give any strong influence on the game at hand. (Look, I absolutely love creativity and storytelling, but I also don't want anyone to craft some elaborate, beautiful tale... only to feel let down when it doesn't play into things.)

Posting rate is listed as a daily minimum. That said... everyone is encouraged to post more. Each thread is two people, so there is potential to have pretty fast-paced battles (by PbP standards certainly). If the other person posts, you're up. It doesn't get any easier.

Newcomers are certainly welcome, but understand if you're new to 5E you will probably be at a disadvantage. This is high level play, and an understanding of mechanics is important. Expect strong character builds and stiff competition.

I might be interested. Lvl 20 will be very difficult though. Never played that high. Never played power chars either.

Count me in to make it to 8.
But if there is a number 9, I'd step down.

I'm interested. I've never played a 5e character above level 7 before nor any kind of PvP, what could possibly go wrong?

The custom array listed is before additions for leveling up?

There is only room for 7 players. Does this mean you are going to play as the 8th champion? If so, doesn't that mean you will have the advantage of knowing everything about all the other contestants?

The custom array is, in fact, your level 1 stats. I don't want multiclassing minimums to be a barrier that prevents anyone from playing whatever crazy build they want to try out.

I do intend to play the 8th. (Can't lie, having a level 20 build I want to try out is one reason I decided to do this.) That said, my first question in the OOC was if people wanted to keep their builds hush-hush -- and so far no one cares if people know what they're running. I'll be making my build public in there regardless of what others choose to do with their sheets, specifically so there's no unfair advantages.

I don't have time to play this myself but am curious.
What type of arena is it going to be. A basic open gladiatorial pit? How big? Any features or environmental conditions?
Any chance you could make this public?

I put it up for discussion, and general consensus so far is to go with setting up a handful of different arenas and using a roll to see which one combatants end up in.

But even my idea for a single arena was to be large (at least 300 feet across) and have features dotted around. I was planning for a few simple buildings, walls, a couple of guard-type towers or elevated locations, a pond, a firepit, a few tunnels, etc. I wanted to have a little something there for any style. Different arenas just means they are each going to lean into certain aspects of the battlefield more.

It's just mindless fun, but the goal is to be just that -- fun.

Totally interested! Love high level game play! Been playing for 30 years now (started at 10 years old!) and have DMed and Played 3 separate campaigns that reached lev 20 and one game where 50 was max level, you had to reach lev 20 in one class before taking a 3rd, and 4 classes max. I called it my "video game" campaign. Nothing crazier than a 20/20/10 Wiz/Barb/Sorc!

I'll take it if it's still available. Was a little intimated with it being 20th lvl and I've never played above 6th, but there is a first time for everything. Count me in!
