General Discussion

Apr 17, 2023 9:45 pm
This is a thread for questions and general discussion about the game.

Recommendations

Dark Mode: It’s a small thing, but I recommend setting Gamers Plane to dark mode for this game. The default bright white background of the website is ill-suited to the folk horror atmosphere of Holler. Dark, neutral colors are the rule. On my end, I’ll try to use font colors and images that work well for dark mode.

Music: The Appalachian region has a rich history of music that perfectly represents the mood of the game. Appropriate styles include folk music, country music, bluegrass, and old-time music. Common instruments in Appalachian songs are banjos, dulcimers, and fiddles, though even spoons, washboards, and other households items have been known to make an appearance. For music that's evocative of the time period, listen to classic Appalachian performers such as Dock Boggs, Roscoe Halcomb, the Old Regular Baptists, Hobart Smith, Hazel Dickens, and many others. Also check out Appalachian throat singing.

Inspiration
Here are some works that fit the themes or mood of Holler quite well, in my opinion.

Outsiders: A 2016 tv series that aired on WGN. It stars David Morse, Ryan Hurst, and Joe Anderson. Taking place in Kentucky, it revolves around an isolated clan of mountain folk and their contentious interactions with the outside world. The show only lasted for two seasons but gives some good examples of Appalachian culture and dialect.

Old Gods of Appalachia: A horror anthology podcast dealing with fictional stories about Appalachia. The episodes focus on the eldritch evils and madness inhabiting those mountains, and how they intersect with the people living there. The audio dramas are well-written, though admittedly I don't find them particularly scary.

Hillbilly: A comic book series created by Eric Powell (the creator of The Goon) about a blind hillbilly vigilante named Rondel. Armed with the Devil's meat cleaver, he wanders the Appalachian countryside killing witches and monsters. Draws on quite a bit of Appalachian folklore. Good art and fun stories.

Some Basic Considerations

• As Bill and Ted like to say: "Be excellent to each other." In other words, let’s all be civil and respectful to one another. This is a game, and we’re all hopefully here for the same reason - to have fun.

• Try to keep up with the posting rate if you can. If posts become too infrequent, the game can lose momentum. But I understand that life gets in the way, sometimes.

• The residents of Appalachia have historically suffered from a number of negative stereotypes. Although this game will definitely embrace certain tropes and explore some of the region's real world problems, the intention is not to mock Appalachian people or culture. The creator of Holler (who is a native Appalachian and teaches Appalachian literature) intends the game to be an homage to the region. That's my goal, as well. Try for an interesting and complex character rather than a one-dimensional caricature.

Thanks for the invite, I will pitch you a character concept soon, once I had a better look at the setting material you shared.
Apr 18, 2023 6:44 am
Thanks for having me. I'll need some time to consider a character. My initial concept is a "holy roller" religious type that engages in snake handling and such. Just an initial idea tho, might change my mind.

thank you for having me. in the sample character you give us, Coot's quote is: I intend to visit the still tonight." what is a 'still' please?
I have submitted a char. if this is not fitting with your concept or this is not dark enough please let me know. I have plenty others.
Apr 18, 2023 1:43 pm
Thank you for inviting me too. My concept remains:

Norma Jean, a seventy year old woman, former county fair horse roping champ, war widow turned school marm, turned church lady and co-chair of the county squash fair. She's nosy, knows everyone, and has got an eye for doing the Lord's work.
Apr 18, 2023 1:51 pm
Thanks for the invite!

As stated in the interest check I'd like to play a resourceful kid who against all odds wants to be a writer and pull himself up out of poverty but is still fiercely protective of his family and home.

A still is a container used to distill liquids. In the case of moonshiners, they are used to produce liquor from fermented grains and fruits.

Thank you for submitting so quickly! I’ll look over the character today but I’m sure it’s fine.
Apr 18, 2023 1:59 pm
All of those sound like fun concepts. Let me know if you have any questions. I usually give people about a week or two to make characters so there’s no rush. I still need to finish posting a few things in the other OOC threads.

oh.... still.... short for distillery! nice! :-D

I'll have to read over the Holler book, but I think I'd like to play a cook.

What kind of art style is everyone thinking for avatars? Real life, art/drawn, black and white, color, old photograph style?
Apr 18, 2023 5:39 pm
I think black and white feels good for the setting. It evokes feelings of bleakness better I think. I like real-life black and white photo but as always am open to what the group prefers.
Apr 18, 2023 8:11 pm
not too fused about avatars. i just google boy with knife. i can change it if not suitable....

Personally I like a lot of the old black and white photography of Appalachia. It does a good job of setting the mood for the region.

I submitted my character for the game. His name is Asa Hackett. He's a Southern Pentacostal itinerant preacher who travels from town to town doing tent revivals and ministering to Holler communities too poor to have their own church. He's part of the Charismatic evangelical Christian movement, so he gets pretty fiery and engages in snake handling, speaking in tongues, uncontrolled shaking, and other hallmarks of ecstatic worship. He sees great evil rising in Holler and has determined he'll fight it to save as many souls as possible. Reverend Hackett rocks a black suit and wide brimmed black hat. I based his appearance off of Robert Mitchum's character, Reverend Harry Powell, from Night of the Hunter.

Having trouble finding an image of a chef, or like a diner cook. Maybe I need to turn to AI?

There are loads of black and white images if you Google Appalachian people photos or something similar. I don't remember exactly what I used for my search string.
Apr 19, 2023 8:33 pm
Also, when each of you has a chance, please roll me a 1d54. This is for your Adventure Card.
Apr 19, 2023 9:25 pm
yeah, I've been searching, (when I should be working on the actual character), but was looking for more of a diner cook vibe. I'll find something. . . .
Apr 19, 2023 9:57 pm
Here it goes

Adventure Deck - (1d54)

(44) = 44

Apr 19, 2023 10:11 pm
character submitted: Tobias Phipps, Peddler.

https://i.imgur.com/hXEhZCn.png

Tobias is a trader. He wanders the Holler scavenging for trade goods to sell, barter and swap from hamlet to hamlet. One week he trades in fruit, the next it may be soap, animal skins or whatever else he can put his hands on for cheap (or better, for free) and resell or trade for a profit.
Grudge: believes Company Stores have killed free commerce and precluded the chance for entrepreneurial spirits to progress. Before the bastards' arrival, life for a free trader was much easier.
Goal: to profit from his trades, and sabotage the Company Stores' business, without being caught, at every opportunity

Nice! That’ll be a good addition to the group.

Thanks to everyone who has turned in characters thus far. I’m currently giving them each a once over.

I'm wondering if I should retool Norma Jean, since @Jesus.Chrysler.Supercar made a preacher, and presumably a Blessed?

His character does also have AB (Blessed), though he has entirely different powers than Norma. I’m gonna wait to hear from Jesus and see what he thinks.

I don’t think retooling is necessary unless you really want to. I can also change my concept. I have several character ideas so no shortage of things I can play

have u guys seen the ballad of buster scruggs? semi-comidic / semi-factual storrytelling at it's best. The one story about the guy with no arms or legs has really bloody scarred me. I watched it for the first time about 2 years ago and i cannot bring myself to watch it again.....
I can watch the rest. the gold rush one and the guys in the carriage telling the spooky story, and buster scruggs etc i can watch, but not the quadreplegic actor!

Windyridge and crazybirdman,

Don't forget to roll 1d54 for me when you get an opportunity.
Apr 20, 2023 5:24 pm
Sorry, I'm making a last minute change to char gen. I'm revising the rules for starting gear, as I feel that they are slightly too restrictive. While your characters are supposed to be poor and under-equipped, I think it's a little too hard to get certain items.

For Gear, your characters now get to begin with six items of choice, instead of three. These items may be of the Common and/or Uncommon varieties. For a Hindrance point, you may select a Scarce item in addition to the six starting ones.

You may use the Gear chapter in the SWADE core book to select equipment, as well. If you chose something from SWADE, just run it by me first. Obviously, the item should be something that exists in Holler and makes sense for the time period.

I've heard a lot about these adventure cards from forums etc. not wanted to part with my money. but they seem a cool add-on. I take if you get a "bad" one you simply chose to not use it? did u get these just from the normal SWADE website? and are they just like a deck of cards? same size etc and you hand them to ppl at the table?
Apr 21, 2023 3:48 pm
Yes, it's a physical deck. It's roughly the same size and number of cards as an Action Deck/playing card deck. You can also buy it as a PDF, which is where I got the images. You can purchase a deck from Pinnacle's website or from DrivethruRPG. Some settings even have their own Adventure Decks tailored to the setting, though Holler doesn't have that yet, so I'm using the generic deck.

I've used the Adventure Deck in my face to face games, and it was always a blast. I've never used it in a pbp game, however, so this'll be a little experimental. Because play-by-post moves slowly, I don't foresee adventure cards getting played too often, and there may be whole chapters where no one feels the need to play one.

If you draw a card with a "negative" consequence, you can simply choose to not play it and discard it at the end of the chapter. There are no cards with purely negative effects, though. They either have beneficial effects, or a mix of the two.

Just a heads up, I’ll be making the first post for the game either tomorrow or Tuesday. I’ve already checked over the characters and messaged people if I had questions or comments.

The first session is going to begin in a small town in the Great Craggy Mountains area. This may be your character’s hometown, or it could just be a place that you’re passing through. Either works.

Crazybirdman has informed me that he’s on a trip and will be joining the first session a little late.

Is everyone here experienced in SWADE? I know some of you are. Just trying to gauge if I should be explaining rules as I go.
Apr 23, 2023 8:55 pm
I have experience with it, yes.
Apr 23, 2023 8:58 pm
I've played a great deal of SWADE.
Apr 23, 2023 9:02 pm
Quite fluent in SWADE too, thanks.
Apr 24, 2023 8:05 am
yeah quite well versed with it too, thanks.
Apr 25, 2023 1:06 am
I am also experience in SWADE
Apr 25, 2023 1:16 am
Okay good. Seems like all of you have experience with the system so I don’t need to bother with explaining rules as we go.

I added a list of Appalachian vocabulary to the Dialect thread.
Apr 29, 2023 5:58 pm
Excited to get to see this great setting in play!

Does anyone want to share connections, create some knowledge of each other and how we might be known?

Norma Jean undoubtedly knows Reverend Hackett, and maybe they have conflict on how best to serve God.
Apr 30, 2023 5:52 am
Tobias can definitely know some, if not all of you. Perhaps he bought or sold some goods to a few of you, or you asked him to be on the lookout for things you need.
May 2, 2023 4:06 pm
Sorry for the delay, everybody. I got held up with work this last week and the first post took me longer to compose than I thought it would. The game is now live.

Qralloq says:

I feel as though Norma Jean and the Reverend might possibly get along the best out of the group, since they’re both the most religious, it seems. Then again, I don’t know how NJ feels about holy rollers. If she’s not a fan of Free Methodists or Pentecostals, then yeah there’s probably some conflict.

As a traveling preacher, I’ve probably come across Tobias on the road from time to time. The two may have even traveled together on occasion to keep each other company.

Tobias might have been asked to keep a lookout for books of any kind for the voracious reader that Macky is.

this is really dense. lots of indo to catch up. It's a nice change from half arsed attempts (myself being predominantly guilty of this) at running a game. I've written a bit about Jack Spriggins. I was also extensively googling the natural formation of coal..... interesting stuff.

Plenty of Savage Worlds has been run successfully since we broke the curse, but it is certainly not immune to ghosting.
