Oh man KCC, if you're playing a cleric in this one I think I have to play a halfling! Let's Freaky Friday this thing!

Hello to those of you I haven't met before -- looking forward to playing with you!

Waffling on a class, but I think I'm going human fighter.

Had some halflings generated, but left it until the cleric dies. A party only needs so many Halflings!

Had a few alternative looks but the subtle dopeyness of the expression on the one above won me over.

I vote slavic-tattooed halfling!

Three fighters, druid, cleric, and thief. That's a party nobody could blink an eye at. Now that we have this established, we just need to finish up the sheets and I can get the story started once it's looking good enough. I'll also be going into everyone's sheets and doing some nifty auto-populating for the attack bonus, saves, and experience.

I don't need fully formed backgrounds from your characters; these often emerge through play. However, since banter is much slower on here than at a table, feel free to determine here if any characters know each other or have other ties.

Are we in dire need of a magic user?

Yeah I like this one as well

I was just wondering that same thing KCC. I could do the gnome thief and multiclass as a mage, although I'd be stuck at first level for a long time. I'm playing the S&W bard in another of cowleyc's games and it's pretty solid, I could do that as a gnome (maybe, the racial limits on bard aren't well defined... Halfling bard seems like a natural fit but halflings almost never do magic in rpgs)

Druids have a little overlap, and you'll have an NPC to help out. I wouldn't say it's a dire need.

Let's chat about languages real quick! OSE has a decent list of languages you can roll for (or choose), and there are a few regional languages. There is the common tongue- Westerling as it is known- as well as Gasquen, Kirkut, and High Boros. Gasquen is used to the south and the east, and is the language of the Foere nobility. Kirkut is used to the west in Reme to the west. High Boros is an ancient tongue that isn't really used today, but is marked in many ruins.

Each character can start with Common and their Racial or Regional language, and can choose to learn racial/regional/alignment languages with their Int bonus languages. Alignment languages are only for Lawful or Chaotic, and are a rough version of Celestial and Infernal.

I'm not here for a full simulation of language dynamics, but they will sometimes come into play. Monsters may not speak Westerling, which would make diplomacy difficult or impossible. Likewise, it might be useful to know that the thirty-eyed creature of blazing flame and confusing rings is speaking Celestial, and is actually an angel trying to help.

So I'm both a fan and a hater of the whole "all normal gear weighs 10lbs" system. Is it easy? Yes. As a backpacker is it insulting to look at what I know is a 40lb ruck and say "meh, 10lbs..." Also yes.

Oops. Always happy to play a cleric of Freya instead. Or any other good, tbh. There were a few!
No worries, I think I can actually make the change AND make it fit the story better in the same swoop!

Just submitted my character! I took Lawful as one of my additional INT languages. Is that correct, or should it be something I automatically know?
Apr 26, 2023 5:48 pm
It's kinda a funny quirk, but you can only learn alignment languages if you are of that alignment. No evil wizards or neutral druids get to know Fantasy-Latin. But you do have Druidic in its place, which I see you've already added.

I see my mistake; for some reason I convinced myself that the alignment languages were innately known by everyone. Maybe the way it was worded on the OSE site. I'll fix that on my sheet.

Ok submitted. Went with my gnome girl last minute cuz I just got a better feeling when looking at her sheet than I did with my eastern-block halfling 😜

And that's our party! Faionn the Human Druid, Nebbleshuven the Human Fighter, Olaf the Human Fighter, Ryenne the Human Cleric, Monaghan the Dwarf Fighter, and Datura the Gnome Thief.

A few things. First, make sure that if you haven't rolled for HP, you do so. I know starting with max HP is a popular houserule, but this isn't that game. I reserve that rule for my Vikings game. Second, make sure you have your languages. I think most of you have those done. Third, equipment. A few of you are still finishing that up. Not to worry, this first little intro is just getting our feet under us.

And for KCC, a little note about Thyr.

Where did we land on burrowing mammals being a chosen language or a gifted one?

Also, has anyone else bought a mule for loot hauling? I have an abundance of spare change and would be happy to be the donkey master...
Apr 26, 2023 10:26 pm
I think given the other abilities the Gnome has, let's stick with it being a chosen language.
