Thank you, Albert, Olden says, My Hilde lived a good long life and I got to share much of it with her and there's not much more once can ask, is there?" He then nods firmly and solemly as Albert talks about finding his way back, "Aye, I know just how that feels. Relief mainly, atleast for me. Eagerness to make up for time lost perhaps."

Comprehension dawns on him as he hears Albert talk of Roald being (recently) bitten. "Oh, I rather thought you might've been in Raynor's ...," he corrects himself, nods to Roald again and says, "err Raynor's implement a while, seeing what you did for the other lad there." He adds hastily and with a wry grin, "Well now, I'm sure a worn-out old git like me wouldn't make much of a conquest for Raynor."

Talk about something else, Olden, quick now, before someone decides you'd make a nice new convert, he thinks to himself as he says, "Where are you all headed, if you don't mind my asking? Have you been on the road awhile?"
OOC:
Olden has noted their good health. Equally so, he can see some wear and tear in their raiment and has a general sense for travelers, but is also confused by the lack of heft in their equipment (unless I misunderstood the last part)

''Well I saw Albert display the power of Raynor a few times before, but I never thought I could be a vessel for his gift of healing too. I must say I'm still a bit shaken by all of it, it did strengthen my faith of course ''

''We are headed to the forest, some of our friends have been captured and we are off to set them free. You are welcome to join us...''

Roald looks around

''... I mean, if that's ok with everyone ''

where is this coming from? Is this still Raynor working his ways? We hardly know this old man...
Jun 30, 2023 6:47 am
Olden looks taken aback at the mention of friends missing and in need. "I'm sorry to hear that about your friends." He thinks he senses a bit of wariness in Roald despite his offer for him to go along. He looks around at the rest of the group as if looking for permission as he says, "I'd consider it an honour if you'd let me travel with you and try and aid your friends." He hefts his pack and says, "I can usually take care of myself, my needs are few, and I carry most everything I - and perhaps some of you - might require."
Jun 30, 2023 8:00 am
"You were looking for more people to aid us." Daryl says. "But they are all too scared of their wives... Sorry old-timer, I did not mean to say you are better off without one, or anything." He hastily adds.
Jun 30, 2023 3:55 pm
"Daryl's right. We can use all the help we can get." Albert chimes in.

"I don't know if it'll come to one, but can you handle yourself in a fight, Olden?" His eyes notice the shield as he's checking out Olden's battle capabilities. "You know what, I think that shield answers my question." He says with a smile. "As far as I'm concerned, you're more than welcome to join us."
Jun 30, 2023 5:12 pm
Olden nods briskly, resettles his shield on his back, and says in a businesslike voice, "I can take care of myself. Lead on when you're ready and I'll follow."

He smiles wanly as he thinks, Of course, we don't yet need to talk about the fact that the most dangerous thing this shield has bashed was a particulaly scrawny jungle cat with designs on my barn.
Jun 30, 2023 7:30 pm
Roald is glad there is an extra hand and brain to join them on their quest.

'' alright then, let's go gather our stuff and march on. I feel as if I can walk all day and night if need be''

Leading by example he starts picking up things still laying scattered after their lunch break.
OOC:
I have no clue what time it is ...

Olden leans his shield carefully against the tree he'd been sitting against. He sits cross-legged facing the shield and murmurs his liturgy in a quiet voice:

"The road we take
When dawn does break

This shield we take
Then off we make

So far we walk
Past dale and creek

So guard the weak
From evil ilk

The traveler's shield Sel-usia"

He then picks up his shield reverently and fastens it to his back, pulls out his toolbelt and secures it to his waist, and with no further word, walks about picking up - with some difficulty it must be said - various objects and holding them up for Roald's and others' inspection and offering them to different people as needed.

With all the talk about shields, the dog took the bread from Olden without to much attention. She lays herself down at Daryls feet and offers herself for a good scratch.

"We still have a long way to go today, I fear. And I would like to face this so called witch with a rested mind." Norbert says feeling he breaks the mood a bit. The prospect of confronting the people in the woods stands in stark contrast to the warm feeling coursing through his body.

He gives a wary look at Daryl. "Do you feel you can get us close to the camp without them noticing us?" Norbert hopes that with Daryls fysical health returning his mind will also be a bit clearer.
Jul 1, 2023 12:06 pm
"Yeah. Me too." Daryl says when Roald speaks about his energy.

He looks around at the trees and the road for the firsts time since getting here. "Yes." He says. "I do recognise this place. It was just getting light when I got here." He thinks for a moment. "I had been on this road for hours, but it was dark and I was weak and dizzy. I am sure I will know the place where I come onto the road when we get there."

He looks apprehensive at Norbert's question. "Maybe?" He answers, but there is a lot of 'question' in that 'answer'. "I was just tying to get away, you see, not really thinking about planning for coming back."

Daryl does not know exactly where the camp is, so you guys will have to take responsibility for finding it once you leave the road, and will have to be careful when you approach, with his escape they may have more, or more alert, guards now.
Once you have assembled your things Daryl sets off down the road, now, once more, at a pace that may be challenging to maintain for some.

The sun is setting to the west and the moon has just peeked over the horizon to the east when he stops. "It was that way." He says, pointing off into the trees, which are casting long dark shadows and not looking at all welcoming. It is old-growth forest, here, and the ground is crisscrossed with fallen branches and rocks and rivulets. It will not be easy to move quietly. "I can't remember how far." Daryl apologises again. "But it felt like hours that I was flailing around in there, all the time with the back of my neck prickling in fear that they would come after me and take me back." He does not sound happy to be going back voluntarily, but the power of Raynor is still filling his veins.

What do you do?
Jul 1, 2023 7:07 pm
'' I don't think it is a good idea to try and find our way in a forest in the dark''
Roald vividly remembers what happened last time they tried to navigate a dark forest.

'' anyone opposed to setting up camp here?''
Jul 2, 2023 6:42 am
Olden trails a few feet behind the others. He takes a deep breath and ups his pace, determined to not hold the others up or be labelled a laggard on his very first march. To be 30 again or 40 even, he mutters under his breath as he catches up and hears talk of camping for the night ... and of more troubling things besides.

Olden looks around to see if other suggestions might be forthcoming before offering, "If we're camping for the night, I can take first watch. I find myself needing little enough sleep in my ... dotage." He smiles wryly as he concludes, "Perhaps Norbert's friend might be willing to help if you think the watcher needs a bit of watching?"

"While I watch, I can sharpen those for you if you like, Roald," Olden offers nodding at Roald's weapons, "and anything else that you all think might need honing or fixing."
OOC:
I'm probably pushing things by assuming that Roald carries his short sword and dagger (got those from the sheet) where they're visible. If not, please interpret the above to imply a general offer to mend weapons if any
How is it that this group carries so little by way of equipment while I lug around this backbreaking pack like an old woman? I must ask when things aren't quite so taut.
Jul 2, 2023 10:15 am
Daryl looks towards the setting sun. "We might be able to get there before it is actually dark." He says, though he may be bargaining on more twilight penetrating the trees than is reasonable. The sun is not yet down, but if his assessment of 'hours' in the forest was correct, and even with him being much slower last time, you will be hard pressed to find the camp before it really is dark.

"I don't know if I will be able to sleep in the forest." Daryl says. "Not because I am scared." He quickly adds. "But because I am so filled with 'bravery' from Raynor's blessing."

Does Raynor bring bravery? Or is fear one the things he expects his followers to conquer? I.e. do you all feel 'brave' or is Daryl lying about why he would not be able to sleep?

Do you camp? If so, do you do it on/near the road, or in the forest?
Jul 2, 2023 1:16 pm
"How about you take first watch with Olden then, Daryl." Albert adds to the conversation. "I do think it's a good idea to camp before it gets so dark we'll lose our way."

He sits down and takes off one of his shoes to rub his foot. It's been a long walk for him too. But he doesn't want to complain about it.
Jul 2, 2023 3:04 pm
"Maybe we can scout tomorrow morning at daybreak? Just one or two to get a look before the whole camp is awake." Norbert looks in the direction Daryl pointed. He still is very apprehensive to fight normal people again. Maybe the camp is full of women and the attack will be blown off. Or the group might even be able to just ... talk to them.

Even though he really looks up to the two seasoned men, they do seem to have no problem with violence. And the old man looked pretty gentle at first but does seem to know a lot about swords and shields.

"Best not to alarm the camp this evening and get off the road for now."
Jul 2, 2023 7:32 pm
Roald starts making camp in the forest, not too far from the road, but far enough that they won't be seen.
'' I'm thinking about digging out a fire pit. You know, one of those with airholes on the bottom. When I'm done with the fire, can someone please go and look if it is possible to see it from the road? ''

He takes out his sword and uses it for digging.
'' after this job, I will take you up on that offer for sharpening my weapons Olden, in return I'll help you carry some of your tools tomorrow if you like.''
Jul 3, 2023 3:03 am
Olden nods to Albert in acceptance then mentions to Norbert, "Sounds wise. I've heard it said by a seasoned caravan guard or two that scouting is best done just before or at daybreak if you're expecting to run into trouble. Everyone ... or thing is too knackered to notice you then," he finishes.

He plonks wearily down on the ground facing away from the firepit and sets about carefully removing various items from his pack including his old but sparingly-used flint and steel. "There was no place in my pack for my axe and splitting maul for the wood, I'm afraid." He looks at Roald self-consciously and points at his pack as he asks, "Are you all from these parts, lad? I notice that you travel light, compared to me anyway."
Jul 4, 2023 5:18 pm
"Yeah, that sounds like a good idea, Norbert." Albert chimes in. "How about you take Daryl with you while we clean up the camp in the morning?" He had noticed Norbert's look. The two seemed to get along well, and with Daryl fully re-invigorated, he felt confident about them as a team.

While the others make conversation, Albert gathers some kindling and wood for Roald's fire pit. After dropping that off, he tries to make a somewhat comfortable spot to sleep on, using ferns and moss from nearby.
Jul 4, 2023 6:39 pm
"We will take the last watch and get going just before dawn." Nobert answers Albert. "If we run into trouble I'll send the dog back. She should be able to find you."

Norbert gets comfortable and fall asleep very fast.
Jul 5, 2023 3:23 am
The fire, in its pit, is not visible from the road. You still have some leftovers from the lunch Barky packed for you, but it is not really enough to satisfy.
As the other men make ready for sleep, Daryl keeps looking around nervously at the trees. He finds a seat near Olden --but facing the fire for comfort (and the damage to his night vision insulating him from the forest looming around him). He does not want to disturb the sleepers, but definitely looks like he wants to talk, even if just to pass the time.

Daryl has not thought to make himself a 'bed' and, if he is to take the last watch and head out early in the morning, should probably try sleep soon. But his current state of agitation possibly would not allow that.
The midsummer night is short, if you all take turns you only need to stand watch for an hour or so each, or two hours if you share the watch.
