This post has been updated into a recruitment thread.
Six centuries ago, events surrounding the Great Upheaval imposed an uneasy peace in the City of Doors. Since that time, the 15 Factions have quietly conducted their philosophical battle for the hearts and minds of all Cagers - and always stopped short of all-out war. But now tensions are flaring, tempers are rising, and the Cage is about to explode into conflict!
The Faction War is a key event in the Planescape universe. I would like to play through the events at the brink of war, the war itself, and its aftermath. Players will play a character that represents one of the 15 factions in Sigil even as these factions descend into war, and will have the chance to influence the war and determine the fate of their faction.
Game System D&D 5e, Planescape setting
Game Duration I will be playing through the adventures in the published 2e supplement Faction War, as modified as necessary to accommodate the 5e ruleset.
Character Options Players may use all published material, we are in Sigil, the centre of the multiverse!
Themes strife, politics, philosophy, otherworldly fantasy. Note there will probably be more social interaction than combat. The entire scenario is based in Sigil, the City of Doors, so there will be hardly any plane-hopping typical of a Planescape game.
Specialised Resources I like to set up a Discord channel for chat purposes and ease of communication. Other than that, everything else with be on Gamers Plane.
Player Experience Experience with D&D 5e preferred, but it is not too difficult to learn and I am happy to teach it. A player with some knowledge of the Planescape setting will be able to derive the most enjoyment out of this game. The setting may feel utterly foreign if you haven't come across it. Otherwise, players must minimally have an understanding of Sigil and its Factions; links to resources will be provided. Hope this sets us up to look forward to the upcoming Planescape release in October.
GM Experience I have played and run D&D (and other game systems) in various iterations over the decades. I tend towards detailed setting creation with multiple plots and options in a sandbox, but will still provide a core storyline to follow.
How to Apply Just speak up here! Thanks again to those who've already indicated interest.
Welcome All This game is explicitly welcomes friends from all groups.
[ +- ] Original Interest Check Post
The D&D 5e update for Planescape has been announced to be launched in October 2023, and will comprise a similar format to last year's Spelljammer release. This means I've got just a couple of months to start my 5e version of Planescape before they change things up. Also, Monte Cook's Path of the Planebreaker has been out for a little while, with some really cool ideas that could serve as a whole setting or as additions to an existing cosmology.
So here's my pitch. Well actually I have two pitches, a crazy one that better GMs have tried with varying degrees of success (or not), and a more regular one.
1. Faction War
Faction War is a 2e supplement that details the great upheaval in Sigil, the City of Doors. Factions are organisations that revolve around great philosophical positions: the Dustmen, the Harmonium, the Mercykillers, the Transcendent Order, the Xaositects, etc. The various factions erupt into war, and the Lady of Pain herself needed to get involved. It is a time of politicking, of machination and plotting, and finally either murderous subterfuge or outright conflict.
You will play a champion of one of these factions, representing their interests to either fight and win, gain from the war in some way, broker peace, cut deals to gain advantage, or stay out of the way just to survive. We will play through a tweaked version of the published adventures in Faction War, which comes in six acts. For this game, I will be looking for up to 15 (yes you heard me correctly there are FIFTEEN factions) players, playing through levels 9-12 or so. If we have player attrition, it just means their faction loses out, unless a replacement player steps in.
2. The Blood War
Hellbound: the Blood War is a 2e supplement detailing the endless conflict between the baatezu and the tanar'ri, the devils and the demons, with the yugoloths somewhere inbetween. In this game, players find themselves caught in the middle of this war, whether as agents of good trying to prevent the consequences of war from spilling over to the rest of the planes or the Prime Material itself, or trying to choose which side to support. Three published adventures in the supplement will take PCs from 5th to 10th level, maybe a bit more, to which I'll add a heavily modified fourth from the Planebeaker book which will tie all three together, and maybe require a fifth chapter to end the story properly. This game will take a more regular adventure format for 5-7 players, give or take.
Both of these are long haul games I'm prepared to start as my current Dark Sun campaign will be winding down after four years of play.
One big caveat: I can't do the Planescape cant, but I'll certainly try!
With enough interest I will turn this into a recruitment thread and elaborate more.
