The Village of Fairhill rests on the largest of several gently sloping hills about 10 miles from the tradeway. Four hundred twenty souls inhabit the village and surrounding farmland. Arlen, the magistrate, governs the village. Though numerous other shrines are present, Freya is the patron deity of Fairhill and her temple is the most prominent. Thus, the true "leader" of Fairhill is Shandril, the priestess of Freya. She disdains that role, however, and openly supports Arlen as magistrate. There is little political strife in Fairhill, as Arlen, Shandril, Captain Baran and the tavern owners all work together. Fairhill is a peaceful town and has not had any real troubles with bandits or monsters. That is, until recently…

You have only moments ago met with Captain Baran and his retinue, who questioned your identities and your reasons for being in Fairhill. Continuing east along the road will take you past a farm (before which you had been stopped), and right to the Tavern of the Three Kegs. Beyond that is the village proper. You have been given directions to the Temple of Freya, located in the north of the village. It is early afternoon, around 2pm, and you could all use some fresh food, cold ale, and a comfortable bed. And, according to Corian, a bath. But you cannot afford to drop your guard, for Vortigern and Talon had escaped your last encounter, and can only guess as to where they might now be lurking.
May 30, 2023 5:28 pm
When the party arrives at the tavern, Nebbleshuven asks Corian, "Are you familiar with the customs of this village? Would it be acceptable if we bathe and eat before paying our respects at the local temple?"
May 30, 2023 6:15 pm
Datura follows the maimed soldier's suggestion and visits the temple of Freya before seeking refuge at the tavern. The sight of the great temple is wonderous to her eyes and she whistles in appreciation as she enters. Datura slowly approaches the shrine as she looks around for the priest, upon reaching the altar she offers a bow as she is not familiar with the proper acknowledgement customary for Freya.
May 30, 2023 9:55 pm
As Datura heads off to the temple without waiting for the others, he says, "What is her problem? Why can't she wait for the rest of us?"
May 30, 2023 10:04 pm
Corian
The wizard looks at Nebbleshuven for a long while, clearly calculating something in his head. You can see that he desperately wants to eat something fresh for the first time in over a week, but he clearly understands the order of things. Right when you might think he had forgotten what the question was, he responds. "Let us make for the temple first, and then we can rest. As soon as I sit down, I suspect I won't be able to move for quite some time." He then looks around, and sees that the gnome had apparently scurried off already. Sighing, he begins trudging towards the temple himself. Galdar walks beside Corian, stoic with his hand resting upon the blade at his side.
Datura approaches what must surely be the Temple of Freya. It is a simple wooden structure, with a peaked roof. Its front has no door and it is open to the outside. Inside the one-room shrine is a stone altar in which is carved the head of a stag. A female elf of stunning beauty stands before the altar, wearing a tunic and a long cloak of winterwolf fur. In her hands she holds a shining silver bowl, worked with strange runes. Before you can stop her, she plunges her entire arm and the bowl into the flaming brazier next to the altar. She begins to intone words in a strange language.

Aha, might this be the silver bowl represented in the sigil on the town guards' surcoats or whatever they were wearing?
Monaghan merely looks on as the ritual proceeds, positively perplexed.
May 31, 2023 1:53 am
As Nebbleshuven observes the ritual, he wonders if it's meant to implore Freya to protect this village from the orcs that appear to menacing them.

"Forced worship is worse than no worship at all." Ryenne broods darkly.

She held nothing against the deity, as such. In fact, being the patron of human women, Ryenne might have had an interest of her own to check the shrine to Freya herself.

"Let the common folk worship who they will, and the Gods can sort it out among themselves afterwards."

At the display at the shrine, she rolls her eyes.

Flashy nonsense…
May 31, 2023 8:37 pm
Datura trots over to her companions as they enter the temple,

"Whew! Thought you guys were gonna fail the test! That stoney faced guard guy told us to stop here first and I just KNOW he would make something of it if we didn't. These country folk can be tense! But look at that pretty elf in the fire! It's amazing! What a show!"
May 31, 2023 9:57 pm
The elf woman finishes her ritual, an offering of grains, and then turns to the party. "This is the Crucible of Freya," she explains to the obvious newcomers. "It brings fertility and prosperity to our little village, as a vessel of Freya herself. What can I do for you, travelers?" True to her demeanor, she does not once look towards the donation box near the door which contains some coin as well as other assorted goods.
Jun 1, 2023 12:18 am
Monaghan performs his customary bow.

"Monaghan MacDuff of the Stoneheart Foothills, at your service, Lady. We come at the guard captain's suggestion to pay honor to the goddess. Only tell us how best we can show our respect."
Jun 1, 2023 2:19 am
The gnome nods vigorously, now more enamored with the elf priestess than the notion of tribute.

"How did you keep from burning your hand?"

"It is a blessing when I invoke Her name," the priestess says to Datura. She turns to Monaghan, "We accept whatever you have to offer, and it is these offerings that continue the prosperity of the town. She is partial to foodstuffs, though many around here prefer to tithe with coin." Her face remains calm as she speaks, not giving anything away as to her thoughts about the donations of silver.

There it is…

Ryenne had seen the same thing carried out at a hundred temples or more. She’d knocked sense into serveral followers of Thyr for the same thing in her time.

And yet there was no denying the sway that priestesses held in these faraway parts of the world.

The cleric steps forward and begrudgingly drops a silver piece into the box.

"From the followers of Thyr."
Jun 1, 2023 4:34 pm
Nebbleshuven follows Ryenne's lead and deposits a silver piece into the box. He doesn't say anything, just nods. Afterwards, he takes a few steps back from the group and towards the entrance.
OOC:
I'll go ahead and deduct that silver piece from my character sheet.

OOC:
Would Monaghan have a read on whether offering a dried ration would be considered appropriate?
Jun 2, 2023 12:59 am
Datura drops five gold coins in the box and makes sure the elf sees her do it. She finishes the action with an ear to ear smile and a wink.

"We are going to the tavern next, in case you get a break later."
Jun 2, 2023 1:52 am
Monaghan, being from a different culture and not being the traditional worshiper of Freya, would not know if a dried ration is considered appropriate. However, it is commonly understood that true intention is looked upon fondly by the gods.

The elf woman turns to Ryenne and gestures towards the door. "Just outside and to the left, you will find a small shrine to Thyr. It is not much, but He is not a god of grandeur. There are also shrines to Mitra, Muir, and a smaller shrine to Bowbe made by another resident," she says to the rest of the party. She turns, then, to Datura. "I'm afraid I do not spend much time in the tavern, but it has been a warm day today. Perhaps I will see you there." She says this with a straight face, one befitting a priestess and important person about town.

Galdar and Corian each approach in turn and deposit coins both silver and gold, though it is clear that even a small deposit pains the wizard. They turn and prepare to depart, having made an appearance.
Jun 2, 2023 2:03 am
Upon hearing that there's a shrine to Mitra, Nebbleshuven heads outside and looks about for it.
OOC:
How legit is the shrine?
Jun 2, 2023 3:03 am
Each shrine is small and covered, with a statue of the respective god sheltered underneath. Small tokens and different forms of worship can be seen at each, and at the moment each shrine has a priest before it. A small gathering of six villagers wander between the shrines of Thyr and Mitra, while none stand at the shrine of Bowbe save a large man, great in girth and worshipping with a booming voice that seems inappropriately loud.
OOC:
As a quick reminder:

Bowbe is the embodiment of barbarian wrath and frenzy.

Muir is the sister of Thyr. While he represents law and peace, she
represents the martial valor necessary to make that peace a reality.

Mitra has become one of the most commonly worshipped gods in Akados, despite being a transplant from eastern lands. Part of Mitra’s appeal is his emphasis on humility among his worshippers while at the same time championing justice and rule of law.

Faionn stays back as the party talks with the priestess, simply introducing herself. She prefers to observe rather than act blindly in an unfamiliar place. She is momentarily alarmed by the ritual, but then put at ease by the priestess's simple explanation: a blessing. Faionn herself was no stranger to the mysteries of the gods.

Seeing that it would be polite, she follows the others' lead and drops a gold piece into the collection box. "Blessed be the land that shapes us," she adds, believing that this should be received with respect—as far as Faionn knew, Freya and Lady Narrah held similar beliefs regarding the natural world.

Ryenne does pass by the shrine to Thyr for a moment, and deposits two silver in the box nearby:

Guide my way, so that the paths of Justice and Injustice may meet once again. The wizard won’t escape when we next meet…

She turns back to the group, with a nod. Ready to depart for the inn.

"Do you think we can rest easy here? The wizard may show his face, but I doubt the guards will allow orcs inside the walls."
Jun 3, 2023 6:05 pm
Nebbleshuven stands before the shrine of Mitra and drops a gold piece into the box. He thinks about the murdered family they stumbled upon and the loss of Olaf. He hopes that they're all at peace. He then turns and walks towards the tavern.

Monaghan will have left a dried ration in the offering box, seizing on the mention of foodstuffs and believing this to be the best way to honor the goddess.

Once outside, he takes interest in the shrine of Muir. "The gods' influence is scarce in my clan's little nook of the Foothills. As such, I personally have never become a disciple of any of them, but I must say, I like the cut of this Muir's jib, if what I hear of him can be trusted."

He then leaves a gold piece in the shrine's offering box/plate and offers a deferential bow.

Jun 3, 2023 8:25 pm
The Tavern of the Three Kegs is a modestly-sized building next to where the party had been stopped by guards, and aside from the stables outside it does not seem large enough to house many travelers. In fact, a sign on the door states that there are no rooms for rent. Inside, several tables have been set up and are filled with a motley crew of individuals. Some seem to be laborers taking a break from the hot sun, while others seem to be travelers who are confused as to why they were sent here instead of to a proper in. A fat, surly-looking halfling stands behind the bar, while a plump, jovial halfling woman scurries from table to table with plates of food and steins of ale.

Of all the tables, many seem quite full save one. A single table sits near the door to the kitchen, obviously seeing a lot of foot traffic, and a single woman sits alone.
Jun 3, 2023 8:38 pm
Upon seeing that there are no rooms for rent, Nebbleshuven sighs. It figures.

He enters the tavern and looks around for a large, open table, but there aren't any unoccupied. Seeing the solitary woman, he takes a deep breath and heads over to her. He removes his helmet and says, "Pardon the intrusion, miss, but are these seats taken, and if not, would it be ok if me and my motley group," he gives a head nod towards the rest of the group, "could share it with you? We're just in from the road where we fought off some orcs, and we're tired and hungry. I'll even buy your meal."

The woman has the smell of magick on her, and so Ryenne casts a wary glance at her arm. While the mage may try to disguise himself, his shattered arm would surely be a feature of any such disguise.

In fact, the weary cleric scans the room and all its patrons with a suspicious glare.
Jun 4, 2023 8:59 pm
Datura slides into a seat at the table without waiting for an invite and smiles a toothy grin at the woman seated there. She sticks out her little hand in greeting and introduces herself.

"Hi I'm Datura Wrightii and it's a pleasure to meet you! I've never been here before, what's good on the menu?"
Jun 5, 2023 4:17 am
The woman seated alone at the table mostly certainly isn't a regular at Three Kegs, and she looks up from the thick and dusty book she's studying as Nebbleshuven, Ryenne, Datura and all the rest of that troupe arrive in force, eying the empty spots around the pale-green eyed woman. Fair-skinned and dark-haired, she wears a well-made and well-worn dress, a garment that's both sturdy enough for travel, and that is low-necked enough to show off an eye-catching portion of the woman's rather generous feminine figure. She's attractive and might be the kind of woman who knows it; charms and bangles adorn her throat, wrists, and narrow waist. On her head rests a broad-rimmed hat -- the kind ofttimes worn by the female apprentices of certain magical colleges.

"Hello!" she says to Nebbles, smiling at him as Wrightii takes a seat and introduces herself as well. "To both of you -- to all of you, then! I am Kariantha Silverwick, daughter of Mylithios Silverwick, and student of the famed Archmage Alderamix the Grand."

The conversation swirls a moment, and the mage says, "Please, all sit, there is more than enough room. And to be sure, the potato stew is delicious... and I might know these brutish orcs you speak of, for I had fellows I was traveling with who met their rude ends at the hands of such!" Her voice lowers as she nods at the idea of having her meal covered. "Resulting in my being marooned here, in this little backwater town... with few coins and fewer prospects!"

Ryenne thinks about muttering something crude about wizards as the woman speaks.

Son of this… Daughter of that…

She wondered about the longest line of lineage one of these mages might recite.

"How was it that you made your escape?" Ryenne asks, trying to sound innocent, and a little less grumpy than she felt suddenly.

The answer would determine the quality of the magick woman.

Left them behind and made a run for it?…
Jun 5, 2023 12:53 pm
"I knew you were a wizard! Know how? Your hat! How did you get those eyes? I can't see the middle part, so unique!"

Datura pauses her barrage of questions when she realizes that Ryenne has asked a far more important question,

"Oh yeah, how did you get away? With magic I bet."
Jun 5, 2023 1:37 pm
Corian
Corian sits down at the table, listening to what everyone is saying. When he hears that Kariantha claims to be an apprentice to a wizard, he perks up. "Alderamix, you say? The name is familiar, though I struggle sometimes with the masters from outside Reme. By the looks of you and the sound of your story, I'd say the winds of fate were having a jest. For we surely look and feel much the same."
Galdar looks around at the room and casts a distrustful eye upon many. It seems as though he, too, we're looking for Vortigern to no avail.
The plump halfling approaches the table with hands full of far more steins than should be possible. True magic. "Name's Dalia, pleased t'meet you. And you lot, what'll you be having? Ale is a silver a mug, food is 5 copper. Tonight is potato stew and, well, you probably don't want to game tonight."

Nebbleshuven swallows the lump of nervousness, relieved that Miss Silverwick has granted the party permission to occupy her table. He keeps an ear open to hear her answer to Ryenne's question of how she escaped from the orcs while letting the hostess know that, yes please, he would like an ale and the potato stew very much.
Jun 6, 2023 4:58 am
Silverwick doesn’t seem to mind the attention, and she smiles with her eyes at Datura. "Why from my mother! Many considered her gaze magical! Mine certainly isn’t, but there’s a likeness."

Her face falls when she answers Ryenne. "It was terrible. My magics are only so strong. So while I’d warded my companions from harm, there were too many foes. I barely escaped with my life, and took an arrow for my trouble. The wound pains me still."

To Corian, she says, "My master sent me on a wild goose chase, I now believe, to be rid of me and my questions. He is a sour man, is Alderamix, with only time for his own studies and spells. He should not take on apprentices, but the college forces him to."

Faionn introduces herself in turn to the wizard Kariantha. When the time comes, she orders a stew and ale quietly and politely. "Please, keep the change," she says, handing the halfling woman a gold piece. "Better you do so than I. In fact," she addresses her party, "would anyone else like anything?"

Faionn files most of Kariantha's conversation away for future use. She doesn't imagine she could add much to this talk of wizards and apprentices (not to mention that it stings a bit too soon after what happened to poor
Olaf . . .), but such information could still prove useful to have. "About this wild goose chase . . ." she finally says, "what was it you were chasing? If it's not rude for me to ask, of course."

Ryenne softens once the answer doesn’t ping something in her gut.

"We know it all too well. There were more of us before. We lost one, but they tried their best to make the tally higher than that."

She motions to her bandaged arm; bandages mostly clean today at least.

"Ryenne, daughter of Thyr." she says, sidling in beside the Gnome.
Jun 6, 2023 2:31 pm
Reaching out, Kariantha grabs a mug full of frothy ale and tilts her head slightly towards Nebbleshuven, reminding everyone, and especially the diminutive server, of his offer. Drinking deeply, coming away from the mug with a bit of foam on her upper lip, the young woman lifts her eyebrows at Faionn, and then Ryenne. Her manners suggest that perhaps her upbringing was not so… sheltered… as some who study the arcane arts.

"Good to meet you, Ryenne, I am Kariantha. Well met! And we quested for nothing less than the FABLED BOOK OF KORBUS! And in it, the Spell of All Summoning." She hesitates a moment to take another drink, then waves her free hand, saying, "Sounds very impressive, I know, but at this stage I’m not sure it even exists!"

Datura orders two pints and the stew but does her very best not to interrupt the conversation the others were having with her new future best friend. It was hard being the only proper lady in the group... Sure there was Ryenne but the holy woman hardly counted as she was tougher than most of the men! Something about Kariantha fascinated the gnome and she aimed to find out what it was.

Magic, probably, she thought.

OOC:
Too tired to brain at the moment, but assume Monaghan to behave in a gregarious and polite manner, taking part in the conversation when appropriate. He will have also ordered an ale and food for himself. Making change for a gold piece, I think that leaves me with 8 silver and 5 copper?

"And what is it you hope to summon?" she asks; as her thoughts drift back to her channeling Thyr’s might to drive back the wizard’s undead a few nights before.

The waitress returns with ale and food, taking a few short trips to serve you all. The ale itself is especially fine, and tastes of fruits that are likely local.

Corian
Corian nearly spits out the first sip of ale as he listens to Kariantha's story. He looks at her as though she were a child. "The Scroll of All Summoning," he asks incredulously? "That's just a story, there's no such thing! A goose chase indeed!" He looks rather smug of himself as he comes up with an offer. "Perhaps you would be interested in assisting me in finding the tower of Eralion and the secrets within. And if we happen upon that scroll, it's all yours. In fact, if we even find a lead, then we can pursue it at your discretion. It's safer in groups now, especially with these damned orcs."

Amongst those trying to enjoy a quiet drink or late lunch, a third halfling can be seen skulking from table to table. Faionn nods along as well. "And perhaps doing so may take us closer to the tower?" She begins to muse aloud, "I believe it was our employer who told us we'd have to do some searching for its exact location, anyway. Perhaps this search for orcs could prove doubly productive."

Privately, Faionn thinks this orc hunt far more productive (and plausible) than any cursed wizardly grave robbing.

"And what is it you hope to summon?" Ryenne asks.

"Well that’s just it!" Silverwick says with no small amount of excitement. "Anything! Sprites that glow in the dark to light the night! Giants, to act as porters! A fearsome Roc, to bear me to lands far behind the horizon, or across the sea!"

Corian bursts the woman’s bubble soundly enough, and her shoulders slump a little as she drinks from her beer. "So I think now too. And four good men paid for my master’s impatience with me with their lives." A dark look mars the woman’s pretty features as she listens to the rest of the chatter, about joining up with the party, and about slaying orcs and such. She does not hesitate in replying to Corian.

The halfling, caught, scurries over to the gnome and offers his hand. "You look new in town! Adventurers, by the looks of you!" A smile breaks across his ruddy cheeks, and he runs a hand through his curly brown hair. "Lannet's the name! If you need a helping hand in town or outside the gates, let me know!" With this, and without waiting for a response, he flips his grey cloak and hurries away. It's fairly difficult to track him once he returns to the throngs of patrons.
Corian smiles at Kariantha and says, "Everyone here has agreed to a fair share of whatever valuables we find along the way, so long as Eralions treasures and secrets are mine." He then looks around the table. "As I do not have any more leads- Fairhill being my only- perhaps dealing with the orcs will lead us to clues as well as the goodwill of the town. We can start in the morning after a night of rest. Though we should likely find an inn before too long."
Jun 9, 2023 5:01 pm
Nebbleshuven attempts to track down the hostess, Dalia. "Excuse me, ma'am. Your sign outside says that you've no rooms to rent. Is there an inn in town that you would recommend? I understand that it wouldn't be as good as your place, but we need a place to bunk for the night."
Jun 9, 2023 5:17 pm
Dalia smiles broadly at Nebbleshuven. "Of course! There's the Drunken Cockatrice just off of the central market; nice place, plenty of rooms, and Glarian is a dear! I think rooms there are two gold a night? And then there's the Cask and Flagon." Her face grimaces for a moment before returning the the smile. "Ol' Tarnen runs that place, and only charges a gold; but I think it smells a little funny, and many travelers prefer it." She gives you directions, and clears away some of the emptied mugs and bowls.

Down to only a few silver, and no gold, Ryenne is ready to rely on the kindness of strangers, and the uprightness of Thyr’s followers in the town.

"Tomorrow then!" she says, with a nod. She relishes the chance to clear the place of orcs, as it was they themselves that slew Olaf. They’d have done more than that, if she hadn’t been so nimble when their blades struck.

"We should speak with someone here and see if anyone knows where they fester."
Jun 10, 2023 5:00 am
Having overheard Nebbles, Kariantha says when he returns, "I stayed at the Cask and Flagon last night. On the floor by the fire. The food is... well, there's a reason why I'm now here. And thank you, Nebbleshuven, for the ale and the stew!"

She then nods at Ryenne, who she's getting a bit of a cold vibe from. Might just be the kind of person Ryenne is. "Good idea. I know the town has been struggling in general with them. Someone might know where they lair, or where they were at least last seen."

He nods. "You're welcome."

To the group, he says, "Maybe we head over to the Cask and Flagon then after we've had our fill of food and drink." He looks over at Corian. "If that's alright by our employer, that is."
Jun 10, 2023 6:06 pm
Corian agrees with the idea of heading to the Cask and Flagon. He offers to cover rooming, and seems relieved that you all chose the cheaper option of the two. He gives the sense that there isn't as much funding into this expedition as he would like.
The Cask and Flagon is easily found where Dalia had instructed. The inn itself is poorly maintained and consists of a large common room with a fireplace, a large kitchen and a storage room in the rear. The common room has four booths along one wall with curtains that can be drawn for privacy. Four dogs sleep on the floor of the common room. To the side of the room, a set of railed stairs allows access to the upper level where the individual rooms are located. As you enter, a hooded figure is climbing the stairs with a large key in hand.

Tarnen, the elderly innkeeper, seems excited to see such a sizeable group enter, as currently only one table is filled with dwarves. Each of the dwarves seems equipped for adventuring, including a shield on their backs that bears the symbol of an axe with a broken haft. Several empty mugs litter their table, and obviously are the cause of the boisterous yelling and tugging of beards. Even from the door you can hear several instances of "Yes, Durgis," and "Right you are, Durgis."

If asked, the innkeeper says that there are currently five of the eight rooms free. Two are filled by the dwarves, and one by another traveler. By this point, it is either late afternoon or early evening, depending on who you ask.

Ryenne can’t help but size herself up against the Dwarven party. Nor can she help but size her troupe up against theirs. In matters of life and death, this wizard may decide to relieve them of their duties, and take up with a close knit group of Dwarven warriors instead.

No matter…

The cleric couldn’t help but think it. Olaf had been slain in the blink of an eye, and there was a wizard’s tower yet to deal with.

"Broken axes on their shields. Is that a… good sign for dwarves?"
Jun 12, 2023 4:23 am
"Some clan device," Kariantha supposes, "or perhaps the mark of their mercenary company. Either way, I recommend holding one's breath when you pass by their tables." She'd briefly contemplated hiring the under-mountain-dwellers as guards, but the coins in her purse were too few, and not enough of them were made of gold. This new arrangement with the newcomers was rather a lucky break.

Catching Tarnen's ear, the dark-haired mage says, "I'll be keeping my room after all, Mr. Tarnen," while darting her eyes and eventually her whole face towards Corian.

Faionn marvels at the sprawling business of the place, like termites chewing and weaving through a block of wood. She also can't help but feel a little claustrophobic—it'll certainly be a while before she's comfortable with four solid walls and a roof of worked oak over her head. Her people didn't shy away from working stone and wood, but never to this indulgent extent. Well, as long as these city-folk gave proper thanks to Lady Narrah for the sacrifice of her creation. Even if they didn't, who was she to judge? Wasn't she questing to learn about other cultures?

"I'm afraid I know little of the dwarven culture," she muses to her companions. She remembers the last time she was in a place like this, and how Corian got the party's attention rather quickly. "If we would like to, I suppose, make friends with these folks, I have some funds."

Someone a little friendlier than a cleric of Thyr…
Jun 12, 2023 1:05 pm
Datura hops off her stool and claps her hands together,

"Sounds like a job for a gnome! Dwarves love me! I'll just have to try not to talk too much, grumpy lot those dwarves."

She traipses over to the dwarves table and introduces herself.

"Hey! Stonefolk! Don't see too many of us around these parts! Let me buy you lads a round! We just got off the road, killed a few orcs on the way in, no big deal. You boys have any trouble with those green buggers lately?"
Jun 12, 2023 1:44 pm
The boasting dwarf turns towards Datura without rising from his chair. "If'n ye want to buy us a round, we Dwarves of the Shattered Axe will happily toast t' our diminutive patron! Ye can call me Durgis, leader of this company." Around the table you can hear the interrupted introductions of Trel, Burl, and Gar, as Durgis begins speaking some more. "Ah've dealt with mah share of orcs, but ah haven't had the privilege of facing down the ones around town. 'Sides, they'd flee when they saw the shattered axe!"

Tarnen rolls his eyes a little as the dwarves find someone new to whom to boast, as he deals with Corian and Kariantha. The magic-user and employer requests the remaining rooms; one for Kariantha given her prior arrangement, one for himself and Galdar (who has has taken on as a more personal guard), and the remaining three to be split however they choose. He pulls out four gold coins and then starts fishing through his purse for the silver necessary.
Jun 12, 2023 5:01 pm
Datura laughs heartily along with the dwarves' boasts, mirroring their mirth and intensity.

"My skinny human pals and I were of a mind to do them all in, for fun! You think the stout men of The Broken Shield might want any part of the glory?"
Jun 13, 2023 5:04 am
Grinning a bit as Datura works the room, and the whole table full of dwarves, Silverwick eyes Faionn and Ryenne after the discussion about the rooms.

Jun 13, 2023 1:31 pm
Trel, Burl, and Gar look to Durgis expectantly. He looks at the three of them before turning back to Datura. "Aye, Grodek and I would be glad to assist," he says patting his mundane axe. "If I could recover her from a troll's hoard in the depths of Rappan Athuk*, I can handle a few pig-faced orcs!" Trel, Burl, and Gar all propose a toast to Durgis.

*Rappan Athuk is a famous dungeon somewhere near the eastern coast, known as the Dungeon of Graveyards.

Faionn smiles and thanks Kariantha for her offer. "I suppose I'll bunk with Datura; after all, if Monaghan and Nebble take a room together then I wouldn't want to leave her alone." Privately, Faionn is glad to be sleeping with someone else. Back home, she was always rooming with fellow druidic initiates. Sleeping alone was no great pain, but it was a sad and lonely outcome she rarely preferred.

As the dwarves toast loudly and merrily, Faionn reflects that she's glad to have such companionship.

As the day draws to a close, all seems in order. Your prior adventures behind you, you and your companions sit in the common room enjoying the warm fire and the cold ale. Talk begins to turn, as it always does, to legends of past exploits and to tales of wonder from distant lands, with each of you thinking that one day, folks may well be telling your story in a place such as this.

Folks come and go throughout the evening some spreading rumors and others preferring solitude. It becomes clear that the name Eralion is known in these parts, though few know more than whispers of the man and his tower. "Eralion? Wasn’t he the wizard who built that old keep off in the forest? They say it’s ruined now. I wouldn’t go near it. ‘Happy is the village whose wizards are all ashes,’" says one man, a local farmer who just wishes to have a drink before returning to his too-many children. "I heard tell that long ago Eralion was in love with both Shandril and some witch and Shandril cursed the both of them! They say the old witch still lives in a cave near his keep and mourns for her lost love," says a young woman who seems to find the whole prospect dreamy. From the innkeeper, Tarnen, you hear, "These orc raids have been growing more and more frequent. Bah! It’s as if we live next to Rappan Athuk or some other den of evil!"

It would seem that a destination has been laid out for Corian's search, though he seems rather wary of trying to explore it so soon. "Let us deal with these orcs first," he advises. "Relieve some pressure from the wilderness and earn the goodwill of the town. They would likely not wish us to disturb the keep of a wizard so near to town."

Corian turns to respond, but is interrupted by sudden sounds. The loud peal of the town bell cuts through the din of the inn’s common room. As those of you who grab your weapons run outside, you immediately notice that the Temple of Freya is ablaze and that there is a skirmish between a cadre of town guards and a group of brutish humanoids of some kind. You can see that several town guards lie dead or injured. From the periphery, you notice Shandril and Arlen rushing toward you. The flames engulf the temple fully and light the village with a hellish glow. With a shout, the humanoids lob what appear to be flaming torches at the guards and flee to the east, shrieking in their foul tongue.

Arrows fly out into the ember-filled air and clatter against stone between the party and the orcs. The distance is too great, and they're escaping!

Corian and Galdar, too, rush out to see the commotion, and at least one of them starts running towards the blazing temple! Shandril and a stern man with a shock of gray hair rush to meet Monaghan. She quickly introduces Arlen, the mayor of this this town, and explains that the town guard will be busy dealing with all of the fire and disorder; the town will need you to recover the crucible, which was stolen by the orcs!

Nebbleshuven rushes forward with a keen ear. It is difficult to piece together everything the orcs shout, especially at such a distance, but he does make out a few words. Bowl, Keep, and Tavik. The last seems to be a name of some importance, though not one recognized.

Corian cries out for his warriors to join him, calling out for Ryenne, Nebbleshuven, and Datura. A throng of patrons from the Cask and Flagon rush past the wizard, all in confusion as the woman had warned them their town was ablaze!

Following up with another question, Ryenne pushes the townspeople for more information:

"What lies that way?" she asks, pointing her mace in the direction the orcs ran, hoping the fragments of their language and their direction might furnish the group with a landmark to aim for.
Jun 19, 2023 12:04 am
Arlen blanches at the name. "We've been hearing the name for some time now. Some sort of leader of those swine-folk. Not the type to be trifled with. But by your cut, you all must be adventurers. If you hurry, you may be able to catch those orcs before the reach their destination! Let me send you with Lauriel; she knows the land as much as the next. They must be making for the keep, and they likely don't know the shortcut." A woman steps forward, lean in build but tough looking. You recognize her from standing by the guard who had interrogated you upon entry.

Shandril takes the sword from her belt and holds it out to Monaghan. "You look as though this could aid you. A weapon for a true warrior." The sword appears to be little more than a ceremonial sword or possibly a druidic weapon of some type. Its handle of horn makes it appear unsuitable for true combat, and it is encased in a rustic, unadorned reinforced leather scabbard. Lauriel's face twitches almost imperceptibly. "And here, let me do what I can. Two more offerings." She pulls out two potions from a pouch, with reddish liquid sloshing inside. She then reaches out towards Ryenne, who is looking rather rough, and invokes Freya to heal the woman. Almost immediately many of her aches and pains fade. "Promise to recover the crucible and bring to justice those who have defiled the temple of my goddess."

Two more guards rush forward. "Baran sent us. Jerinor and Hathol." They are each wearing uniform ring mail and green surcoats with the crucible device, and bearing a wooden shield, short sword, and shortbow. Lauriel, in comparison, wears chainmail and bears a flongsword and longbow. Corian looks over the band and then to you all. He looks ready to pursue, as does Galdar.
OOC:
TLDR: Arlen, the mayor, wants you to rush east towards the keep with haste. He is sending you with Lauriel, a guard and woodswoman who knows a shortcut. Also Jerinor and Hathol, guards. Shandril healed Ryenne for some points and gave the party two potions. She also offered her sword to Monaghan.

Jun 20, 2023 2:44 am
Once the blade is drawn, it is clear that this sword is of exquisite workmanship. The length of the blade is traced with finely etched runes of an unknown design. There is an ethereal quality to the sword that Monaghan cannot quite comprehend. Once gripped, the horn handle fits the his hand better than any weapon ever held, and the blade glows with a warm, low light. Somehow, Monaghan feels the presence of something watching over him, and the name of the blade is made known to him. Valkyria. Shandril smiles grimly as the dwarf tests the blade, and says, "It must be returned to me once you have accomplished your task."

Meanwhile, the mayor retrieves a quiver of arrows from beneath his cloak and hands it to the gnome. They may be a little longer than she is used to, but Datura is rather clever. She can make do.

For now, she twist her spear in one hand, setting her grip just right. "Let us make haste, then. I am as ready as I ever will be."
Jun 20, 2023 7:42 pm
The dwarves of the Shattered Axe take up their arms and hurry outside, ready to hunt the orcs. And then the race is on. You begin heading east out of town, and the orc-sign is obvious. Heavy footprints and vegetation crudely hacked out of the way. After an hour you reach the river bend, a tributary of the Graywash River.

Try as you might, your band finds themselves unable to overtake the orc thieves. They are constantly too far ahead, and often out of sight. It is at this bend that the river is fordable, and you hurry across with little regard for footing. And once again you are in pursuit.

Not much longer after the river crossing, you find yourselves on a road leading northeast into a thick forest. Lauriel points you all towards a section of the trees that few of you would have noticed before. "I know the trail passes through here, but it is frequently overgrown. Keep your eyes out, it is far too easy to get lost. Or, if you'd prefer, we remain on the Old Road. It won't be as fast, but we won't get lost should luck desert us."

It takes two hours of crawling through the thick forest, but it is till faster than taking the road. The sound of orc voices grows louder as you draw nearer to the orc band. You are now only a few dozen yards behind the orcs, and you can clearly hear their wicked songs of celebration. The overgrowth shrouds them from your view, and vice versa. Lauriel circles her hand above her head, signaling everyone to rally to her to plan your attack. You smile, knowing the orcs are unaware that their death is at hand!

The orcs are loud and boisterous from their successful raid, believing in their foolishness that they have not been followed. Nebbleshuven can hear them talking, and picks out a few names. They are happier than usual because raiding the temple was an important task given to Kren by Tavik. Kren hopes this success may help him unseat Nagrod as the leader of the orc band. Kren carries the crucible. As best you can tell, there are a total of seven orcs including Kren.

"Then we should stay together. Don’t let them get around us, and cut us off from one another. Safety in numbers, with us between the archers." she says, looking to the warriors of the group. How she wished they had a broad back like Olaf’s to take up some of the space in a line…

OOC:
Well, if that gang of dwarves wasn't being such party poopers, this answer would be a lot easier.

It looks like we have the 3 townspeople, Ryenne, Nebbleshuven, and MacDuff to charge the orcs. Datura heads up the archers.

What are Faionn and Kariantha doing? How about our employer and his bodyguard?
Jun 22, 2023 8:41 pm
The three guards offer their services as archers. Lauriel points out that the paths are rather narrow, and so fitting several warriors on each side would be difficult. A shield-bearer and someone with a spear would be optimal. She, too, casts a withering look towards the dwarves. The three underlings cower under her gaze, but Drugs merely shrugs.

Galdar offers to block one side in melee, and Corian admits that his memorized spells are... unsuitable for a brawl.
Jun 22, 2023 9:34 pm
Ok, so the 3 townspeople will be teamed up with Datura, leaving Ryenne, Nebbleshuven, MacDuff, and Galdar for melee. I hope the townspeople are as good as Datura with their bows.

Nebbleshuven has a shield. He has a javelin (right?), which isn't the same as a spear but it's something. So he could take the other side.

I'm guessing Kariantha will hang with the archers and cast spells. We should wait for Faionn's reply. Maybe she can offer something druidic to help us out.

Warriors leap out on both sides of the orc thieves; Galdar and Ryenne stand as shieldbearers, while Faionn and Nebbleshuven are right behind them with spear and javelin. Archers stand to the side and begin unleashing arrows and darts upon the unsuspecting creatures. Monaghan finds himself... somewhere; the path the Orcs are on is tight, but the dwarf is a skilled warrior and manages to slip into the fray.

Seven orcs stand in a line ready to be picked off. Most have ring mail and short swords, but the orc in the lead wears chainmail and holds a battleaxe; he also has a sack tied to his belt with a hefty weight inside, likely the Crucible of Freya.
OOC:

The warriors finding themselves in melee all fail to land meaningful blows on the orcs, but they do provide wonderful distractions. Ryenne batters at Kren forcing the lead orc to defend himself as Lauriel lines up some arrows and sticks him with one. Monaghan crashes through the brush with both swords circling in vicious strikes, but his target was already alerted by the arrows and manages to defend itself. Several orcs are slain instantly as arrows crash into their bodies, dropping to the ground. The remaining orcs quickly realize what is happening and mount a defense.

The head orc himself, Kren, bears down on Ryenne with powerful blows from its large battleaxe. While she is able to parry some blows, the strength behind them begin to weaken the warrior-priestess and her guard slips for one fatal moment. The edge cuts deep into her chest and she watches as the world around her turns to black. Meanwhile, a stray arrow find its way into Kariantha's arm, turning the witch sideways but not slaying her. Arrows fly back and forth and blows are traded, but no other hero is killed.

The young mage also sees Ryenne go down and knows that this battle is suddenly desperate. They’d had the drop on the creatures, but that doesn’t seem to have mattered!

Fumbling with the bandolier that holds her final three darts, she pulls them out one at a time and fires them at the orc leader, one-two-three!

Monaghan risks danger as he darts forward with one of the healing potions he had been given, and pours it down Ryenne's throat as Kren looms over him. Faionn's spell is released into the world and the form of Kren begins to glow in the fading light. This is enough to give clarity of sight to one of the archers who fires upon and sticks a shaft into the orc. Nebbleshuven then thrusts his javelin deep into the chest of Kren, and the lead orc howls in pain before the life leaves his body! Datura's arrows find their marks in one of the tougher looking orcs who keels over looking like a porcupine, and the remaining archers and Galdar mop up the rest of the foul creatures.

End of combat

The orc thieving party lies dead before you, and the crucible waits in a sack upon the ground. Lauriel speaks up, "We should take this and return to town immediately!" Nearby, however, Galdar disagrees by saying, "The orcs were clearly going to the keep and will know if the raiding party goes missing. They will bolster their defenses, and may even retaliate against the town."

After delivering the killing strike to Kren, Nebbleshuven looks around to see that the rest of the orc party has been slain. He snaps back to where Ryenne fell and sees Monaghan administering a healing potion to her. He walks over to them and, upon seeing her revived, is relieved.

He listens as Lauriel and Galdar argue over their next course of action. He says, "Is it not possible to do both? Can we dispatch a courier to race back with the crucible while the rest of us investigate the keep? And if we do press forward to the keep, do we have enough forces to lay siege to it?"
Jul 3, 2023 6:29 pm
Datura sets about retrieving what arrows she can and searches through the pouches of the dead orcs as she goes. The idea to send a runner back to the town seems sound, she thinks, but best to let tall people handle tall problems.

Searching the bodies, you find that between the orcs there are pouches containing a total of 42 gold coins of various mintings as well as 88 silver coins. They have crude arrows aplenty as well as many flasks of oil. Kren had a beautiful pearl as well as a large iron key. No map exists on their bodies.

Monaghan steps forward and offers to return as well. He feels that the sword was tasked with returning the crucible, and now that it is retrieved the sword should also protect it.

To Monaghan, "Safe travels, my friend."

Nebbleshuven looks to see if the other dwarves are still with the group. He then wanders over to Datura. "Nice shooting, Datura. Your prowess with the bow has definitely been key to our success in battle thus far." He pauses, then continues. "You seem to be on good terms with the dwarves we met back at the inn. Do you think you could convince them to join us since it seems like we're going to press onward to the keep?"
Jul 6, 2023 1:54 am
Faionn approaches Monaghan and Lauriel, who both seem ready to make the trip. "Safe travels, indeed, both of you." Privately, Faionn also believes the presence of their dwarf friend could keep the newcomer in check.
Jul 6, 2023 3:43 am
When the pair goes, Kariantha turns to the others.

"We're going to look for their camp?" she asks, a little warily. "What if we find it, and discover their warriors number in the hundreds..."
Jul 6, 2023 4:52 am
Datura merely shrugs off the compliment paid by Nebbleshuven and quips, "just lucky I guess!"

She agrees the dwarves would be most useful in the attack and prepares to enthusiastically bombard them with platitudes just before Kariantha hits the breaks on the whole operation.

"Oh yeah, what if there are hundreds?! That's probably too many! I can scout way ahead and get a peak at their camp before we go in, then we'll have a better idea of what we're dealing with."
Jul 6, 2023 3:07 pm
The two nod and head back to town, with Lauriel urging haste in Monaghan. Before the dwarf leaves, though, he offers the shorter sword (from the farmhouse) to whoever might take it. "I trust my own sword over something this small," he admits.

The dwarf band creeps into the open trail where the slain orcs lie. Durgis wields his very mundane axe and says, "Now, a keep is something we can help with! Stone walls, heavy doors, and best of all... no trees!" The three dwarfs Trel, Burl, and Gar all nod as though Durgis spoke wisely!

Corian offers that you can continue onwards and then scout the keep from the cover of the forest. And the presence of the key, larger than one for a padlock, might provide another mode of entry.
Jul 6, 2023 5:25 pm
Nebbleshuven takes the silver sword from Monaghan to hold onto. "I don't believe that we'll encounter anything at the orc keep that will require using it, but I'll hold onto it just in case."
OOC:
Can clerics use swords in S&W?
Nebbleshuven is pleased that Datura was able to convince the dwarves to be more involved with attacking the keep. He also agrees with her that scouting the keep before launching an attack is wise. "There's no way we can take on an army by ourselves. Retrieving the chalice was the main objective. Returning with a measure of information about the forces at the keep would suit the town better than us dying."

I think for now it is being put in a communal treasure, which will be distributed equally upon return.
With Ryenne's urging, the party continues onward towards the keep following the secret path. The remaining travel is not too far, though the light is quickly fading. Suddenly, the forest opens before you, revealing the crumbled battlements of a ruined keep. Immediately in front of you is one of the large stone towers of the keep. The tower has a partially collapsed roof and a crack runs down its length. The crack has been filled with stones, and a large iron door has been set into the filled crack. An iron padlock seals the door. Above the crumbling curtain wall, you can see the remains of what must have been the steeple of a chapel. It is difficult to see much more from your vantage point, since the forest has grown up to the very walls of the keep.

"Before we lose the light!" Ryenne says, as she takes the iron key and crosses for the door. She sets about opening it.
Jul 9, 2023 4:34 am
The door unlocks and opens with surprising ease. It appears to be well-oiled, as though the orcs use this door frequently. It opens to a 20ft-diameter tower with a set of stone stairs leading to the second floor. The wooden floor on the level above is rotted and has a large hole in it, as does the roof. In the center of the floor is a colony of green slime with scorch marks around the edges; footprints circle the edge of the tower and avoid the slime. A door on the other side waits closed, without an apparent lock.
Jul 9, 2023 4:53 pm
In a hushed voice, Nebbleshuven says, "We should get a few archers up high to pick off any orcs in the courtyard. Maybe have a group rush in through the courtyard as a distraction once we're ready to storm the tower and battlements." He offers to lead the way up the stairs.

"I can take the high ground but that floor looks shakey at best! Better stay close to the walls, who's coming with me?"
Jul 9, 2023 7:10 pm
The second level has a rotted floor with a large opening to the first level below. The roof above is also destroyed. There are two closed doors, one facing west east and one facing south. This is in contrast with the doors on the first floor that had faced northwest (the entrance) and southeast. There are no footprints up here. Nebbleshuven recalls that the orc in the belltower had been to the south.

I'll accompany Datura with my darts... but we might meet orcs on the walls. Or they might come from the other towers. We'll need to watch for that."
OOC:
Kari will go up to the second level. Suggest we check the east door first, then the south door since the orc in the tower might see what one opening. Great care will be taken to avoid both the slime and any truly rotten sections of floor. If they look like to collapse, Kari will just retreat back downstairs.

Ryenne will remain below, as the others go about checking upstairs. She puts an ear to each of the doors on the ground floor, listening for activity on the other side.
Jul 10, 2023 2:43 am
OOC:
So Nebbleshuven, Kari, Datura, and two guards up to the battlements and Ryenne, Corian, and the four dwarves down below. Is that right? Are we missing anyone besides Faionn and Galdar? Actually, would it make more sense for Nebbleshuven to be part of the ground party? If the battlements are narrow, he might only get in the way of the archers.
Jul 10, 2023 3:08 am
The lead dwarf steps forward and, in a loud whisper, explains his idea. "We dwarves are not born archers, nor adept in open courtyards. But we know the stones, and we can find any exits. Have you ever been troll-hunting? It's how I got Grodek here," he says petting his very mundane axe. "You need to send in warriors through the front of the lair, flush out the creature. Dumb, smelly, but surprisingly crafty. They always have an escape. If we come in arrows flying, the orcs may flee. And that's where we of the Shattered Axe must be waiting!" Durgis’ companions, Trel, Burl, and Gar, all nod encouragingly at this ingenious plan.

"Yes, yes. Do what you must. Though I doubt they’ll sing songs about this battle."
Jul 10, 2023 2:59 pm
As Ryenne listens to the door, the troupe of dwarves scurry off to their own task. She spends some time listening, but can't make out if any of the noises she hears are orcs moving quietly or trees and branches rustling.

Those that stand on the second floor check the doors heading east, and then south. The eastern door opens to battlements heading towards a door roughly 30 feet away. Based on the tree cover outside of the keep, this is likely a gatehouse. The southern door opens, as well, to battlements that extend roughly 15 feet before they crumble in ruins. A structure sits towards the inside of the keep with the belltower extending upwards. The orc sentry does not seem to have noticed you.

Galdar approaches the door leading further into the keep, but waits for Ryenne and Nebbleshuven to join him. Corian moves to follow, as well as Kariantha and Faionn. All three spellcasters recognize that while they are of little use in melee, they are of even less use at such a distance.

Galdar turns back towards Nebbleshuven, having been distracted by the sharpshooting of his allies. "We should have a strategy. Do we clear the yards and then the towers? Do we clear a side at a time so we're not surrounded?"
Jul 18, 2023 6:13 pm

This building was once a chapel to Thyr, god of law and justice. The chapel itself consists of one main room with an altar, behind which is a small sanctum, divided from the main room by a curtain. The walls of the chapel are covered with evil runes and orc feces. The angelic statue of a celestial servant of Thyr remains unmarred, witnessing the desecration of his temple. The altar itself has been smeared with blood, and a burning candle with a black flame has been placed upon it. The tapestries and pews, which were once of fine quality, have been destroyed and are currently used as soiled bedding by the five orcs who sleep here. Rustling noises can be heard from behind the curtain.

Nebbleshuven scrunches his face up in disgust at the sight and scent of the place. He checks Ryenne to make sure she hasn't been overcome with rage for this defilement of her god's temple. Her eyes fall on the celestial as she crosses the room again, and once again.

Freya knew of Thyr’s plight in this place…

She beckons the others to move in quietly and take up a place. The numbers might mean that they would have to favor speed over stealth for the last few!

Galdar locks eyes with Ryenne. Though he pays fealty to Muir, she is the sister to Thyr and the goddess of virtue. There is no virtue to be found here. He unsheathes his blade and nods. The first three die quietly in their sleep, which is better than they deserve. As you approach the remaining two, however, you notice that the shuffling sound stops. The curtain is thrown to the side as an orc in chain and robes steps into the room. By his spiked mace (in the shape of a skull) and shield bearing the emblem of a rod headed by a skull, both Ryenne and Galdar can recognize this to be a worshipper of the demon-prince Orcus.

As the two orcs leap up from their pews, they move towards Ryenne and Nebbleshuven and engage the two with their own wickedly jagged shortswords. As Ryenne cries out the name of her god, she feels His influence guide her sword-arm. With divine precision, the mace smashes into the shoulder of the orc-priest, and he, too, cries out... but in pain! Meanwhile, Nebbleshuven draws one of the orcs to the door and then outside. Datura issues her order and begins rushing down the ladder, quickly followed by the two guard archers. Corian opens the door to usher you outside, and Faionn herself takes the lead with darts in hand.

Round Three of Combat

The orc-priest grins a nasty grin as his enemy dies, an offering to Orcus! When Ryenne strikes him, however, he snarls and turns on the warrior-priestess. His spiked mace raises high into the air and then smites down towards her, dealing a nearly crippling blow. She can almost hear cruel laughter whisper through the cracks in the chapel walls as her blood is drawn. The orc that did not follow Nebbleshuven darts his eyes back and forth between the priestess and the retreating warrior. After a moment's hesitation, he apparently decides that easier prey might just suit him; the orc heads after Nebbleshuven.

Those outside can see six orcs rush forward to the far side of the palisade, bows drawn and eyes searching for targets. They also see Nebbleshuven crash through the chapel door with an orc hot on his tail, as they trade blows and parries. Fortunately, the man is able to defend himself as the orc seemingly gets the upper hand.

The guards stand by Datura as she picks off two orcs at once, and they fire their own shots. Inspired by the gnome, their own arrows find marks as well; in total, five of the six orcs drop dead from overdose of arrowheads. The sixth orc looks bewildered and terrified as an arrow narrowly misses it. Inside the chapel, Ryenne feels once again as the hand of her god takes her arm and delivers a mighty blow to the Enemy. The feeling is not as strong this time, as though the presence were fading. But still, her mace crashes against the foul monster's shield and it winces in pain.
Round Four of Combat

The surviving orc archer recognizes that it will likely be dead in a matter of seconds, so it does the most logical thing it can think of... it runs. It turns to the south side of the keep and bolts as though its life depends on it. Meanwhile, Ryenne and the Orc-Priest continue their battle of faith and strength. But by the sounds of the orcish death-squeal and the sight of one skewered right outside the door, this priest seems to have a backup plan. It reaches into its tunic and grasps a necklace of beads and grunts something in orcish. Before Ryenne's eyes, the orc-priest disappears with a small puff of smoke. The final orc- the one that had been hesitating by the doorway- looks as though it were trapped by a spider's web... it freezes in place with no idea where to go.

A destroyed bedframe with crudely reformed bedding sits in one corner, while in another corner are two bound and gagged figures; a human and a dwarf. "Probably best that we find a room to barricade for the night, eh?"

The gnome is quite good at seeing in the dark and volunteers for the middle watch shift.

"Agreed." Nebbleshuven looks around at the filthy chapel. "It shouldn't be this place though. And the entrance tower with its green slime is also out. How was the tower? Was there enough room for all of us up there?"

Nebbleshuven nods. "I didn't think that you'd be willing to stay here after the orcs defiled it. But if you feel our presence here will be restorative, then so be it. Hopefully, we'll go nose-blind to the stench soon."

Jul 31, 2023 2:49 pm
The party sets to work barricading the doors and choosing sleeping arrangements. Corian, not knowing what else to do, begins trying to clean the chapel to the best of his ability; without access to water, the best he can do is pushing debris to the side. Early into the night, something tries to push in the doors of the chapel; orcish voices can be heard outside, and then nothing. Throughout the night rustling noises can be heard in the courtyard, but nothing else tries to enter. The morning arrives.

Datura had been tempted to rouse the party when the orcs tried the door in the night but decided they needed the sleep more.

"Well we know they're out there, ready for us. Shall we throw open the doors and ride for wrath and ruin?"
Jul 31, 2023 6:19 pm
"Let's listen first. But then, yes. No one should be in view of the doors when we open them, just in case. We should try to collect the debris in the room to form a battlement and have the archers crouch behind it for cover. But if the courtyard is clear, are we returning to town or exploring the rest of the keep?"
OOC:
If there isn't enough debris to build any sort of cover, then just ignore that sentence.
Jul 31, 2023 7:27 pm

Suddenly the gnome has an idea! She takes a bit of bread and hard cheese from her rations and begins calling out for rats in the language of burrowing mammals...
Jul 31, 2023 10:36 pm
Kurin's first sleep in a while without being shackled was a great feeling, surrounded by warriors, he never felt so comfortable. He did his best during the night to keep himself from snoring.

When he and the others awoke, he grabbed some of his rations for the day and ate, so happy to be eating again, even if it was just rations.

"Oh yes, that's much better, now, we were talking about killing these orcs! You bet I'm in, just let me get ready and if you want, I can go right behind your scout, so if danger arises, I can best get in there and show them why they don't let dwarves live!" He said to them excitedly.
Aug 1, 2023 1:57 am
Finally a night of sleep without a sword hanging over his head. That few hours of rest felt like a peacefull moment compared to the last few days.

After taking a few bites from his ration, another delight in the circumstances, he proceed to help the warrior who freed him to make a barricade of sort to hide behind.

"Well I can't say I'm happy to stay longer in this defiled place. But I have a revenge to take on those bastards. Let's get rid of them!" He adds nocking an arrow to his bow.

The windows in the chapel are simple shuttered things, small closed portals that face the sides but not the front. Too small for a man, let alone an orc.

The two guards draw their bows and nod at the beginning of a plan. Corian spends some time in his tome, studying his magicks.

Meanwhile, Datura begins scurrying around the chapel squeaking up a storm! She is able to find eight rats that have tolerated the orcs and remained; many more had fled.
OOC:
I was under the impression you were really barricading yourselves in over the night. Spying through a door crack, even with night vision, would be incredibly difficult given the ruined nature of this place and the very limited range of sight.

Kariantha rises early to spend some time with her grimoire, memorizing the Shield spell she'd cast to good effect the day before, then she settles into a high-up nook to observe the others as they rouse and rise. The young mage watches Datura's antics with interest, and she also can't help but notice that Corian is a spellcaster himself, and undoubtedly more accomplished at the arcane arts than she is.

When there's talk of orcs visiting in the night, the woman moves to all-business mode, packing up her things and arming herself once again with her darts...
Aug 2, 2023 2:24 pm
Nebbleshuven watches Datura, amazed that she appears to actually be communicating with them. He waits for her to finish before inquiring further.
Aug 2, 2023 3:13 pm
The rats scurry out under the door, disappearing from sight. Some minutes later, they return and tell the gnome that there are scary ones out there. It's hard to get a number from the rats, given that they are only as intelligent as, well, animals, but they do indicate that there are many. And that the big one is with them.

Corian suggests that he can try to even the odds with an enchanted slumber.

"So we have someone on either door pull them open and stand out of the way as our archers launch a volley at anyone in sight. Mages can do... whatever it is that mages do. Then we can rush out the door. Does that sound like a plan?"
Aug 3, 2023 7:41 pm
"Whatever it is that mages do?!" Kariantha says with mock outrage, hitching up her skirts, hefting her spellbook, and blowing a curl of hair from her face. "Only magic Nebbleshuven!" Straightening the rim of her impressive hat and puffing up her nearly as impressive chest, the young mage goes on, gesticulating and gesturing. "Storms of ice shards! Balls of fire! Great, gigantic grasping hands! Ensorcellments that beguile and daze foes! Invisibility charms!"

Then, ceasing with the drama, she smiles sweetly at the fighter. "Now, I haven't learned any of those magics, but I have darts and a flask of oil that's begging to burn orcflesh." Motioning with her head at their leader, Silverwick continues, "Now Corian... he knows some powerful spells!"

In the following moments, if the group decides to act on this gambit, Kari casts Shield on herself, filling the air with magic words and glittering dust, then she stands ready in the rear with a lit flask of oil.

Nebbleshuven is thoroughly chastised by Kariantha's outburst. He sheepishly looks at the floor. "Apologies. Magic is... mysterious to me. I don't pretend to understand it."
Aug 3, 2023 9:28 pm
The rats respond that Datura could fit in the small holes (rat holes) everywhere and the big holes (windows).

The windows could, in fact, be an option... if Datura is sly enough, as well as lucky enough.
Aug 4, 2023 3:07 am
Datura thanks and dismisses the rats and turns to her companions.

"Well, we're trapped like..."

She glances nervously at her tiny friends,

"Like birds in a cage. The rats mentioned that we could go out the windows, but there's a lot of orcs out there so it's risky."
Aug 4, 2023 3:22 am
Eldon ponders for a moment on these words. His chances to survive this ordeal seemed to be thinner thab hw had hoped upon his rescue.

"Well tuens out your wizard friend may have the best plan after all. Even if it seems foolish. Let's send the most of them to sleep and focus our effort on their shaman. Perhaps that will demoralize them?"
Aug 4, 2023 7:05 pm
"Yeah, we just have to kill that Shaman in such a brutal manner that they won't dare come and try to get their revenge!" He said as he clasped his axe.

"Let's get to killing. My blood's starting to boil over!"

Ryenne and Nebbleshuven rush into the courtyard and begin slaying the snoring orcs. All can hear a voice cry out from the south side of the keep, where someone yells in orcish, "By me, Grosh!"

A large orc in chainmail with a battleaxe charges towards you, while an ogre lumbers just behind him. The two look like fearsome foes, not just the same orc grunts you've been facing. One strikes the ogre, but the others fall short as they try to avoid hitting the allies in melee. Corian follows instructions and disappears into the chapel.

Ryenne tries her best to keep the orc occupied with her own combat ability, but the sheer strength of the brute threatens to overpower her. His axe cuts deep into her shoulder and is stopped by bone. With unmatched skill, the orc then manages to strike a powerful blow against Nebbleshuven, striking the weapon from his hand and drawing a deep wound through his stomach. Several arrows fly into both the large orc and the ogre, drawing blood from both and staggering them for a moment. Large they may be, but not invincible. Ryenne fights valiantly and silently gives prayers to Thyr, knowing that she will soon fight by him against the legions of the hells. Parry after parry, she duels what must be the orc chieftain; deep down in her heart, she knows that it will soon be over. He knocks her shield aside and rears back for a killing blow. As her life flashes before her eyes...

Three arrows slam into his chest and knock the orc backwards with the impact. His life leaves him before his body hits the dirt.

The guards stand stunned as they realize what has just happened. Even the ogre looks down at the fallen chief in a moment of silence. Turning away, it grumbles "Nagrod was fool, now dead fool. "And what next? We came here to stamp out the orc threat to the outpost, have we done so? Do we push on or leave? Leave for the tower or leave and come back?"

Kari nods at the idea of laying the man to rest in the chapel. Looking at Ryenne, she softly adds, "Perhaps you can perform the funeral rites?"

To Datura, she responds, "We cannot leave that orc priest running free, can we? Surely he will marshal more forces and return to attack Fairhill again. He has at least one ogre in his troop -- imagine if he recruits more! I say we return the crucible, gather our strength, then hunt him down! Or better yet, lay a trap for him..."

What is this tower you speak of? Is it a safe place? He asks the group.
We know for sure there is an ogre lurking around somewhere. I'm not sure he will be less trouble now that he's not following orders anymore.

OOC:
There are two towers in the north side of the Keep, and one to the south. The ogre ran off through the ruined walls to the south, past the tower. You've only explored one of the towers here so far.

Stopped for dinner, so you get this little post.

"By the gods of the mountains are we going or staying?" He asked the rest of the group as it seemed that the tides of battle had turned and the party was in fact, winning.

But the battle had come at a loss, it seemed that one of the group had been brutalized to the point of non-recognition, the dwarf puts away his weapon for a moment and takes off his helmet, placing it over his heart.

"So sorry for your loss, he died in battle, I hope his god or gods are proud of him." He prayed.

"We should follow that ogre," Datura comments darkly,

"It's wounded and it'll never be easier to kill than now."

Kari nods. "We're not in the best shape ourselves, but you're right. We outnumbering the thing badly, and might be able to kill it from a distance. But after that, we should return to Fairhill and prepare for the priest's return -- or to meet him in the field!"
OOC:
How many NPCs are currently with us?

"Well alright then, I haven't taken any hits yet, so I can still rush up on that Ogre and give it a nice reminder why it chose to run!" He said to the group.

"We best be off hunting it then, it's legs are large and can cover a good distance, even injured." He said to the group.

"Let's go get that ogre before it cost someone else's life.

Nocking an arrow to his bow Eldon is ready for the hunt.
