You’re needed, investigators: join the secret society Candela Obscura to confront occult horrors from beyond, keeping hidden the true nature of magickal incursions besetting our world.

In the poverty-stricken district of South Soffit, fear grips the residents as a series of gruesome murders plagues the streets. Each victim, a destitute woman, met her untimely end under the shroud of darkness, her body bearing ritualistic markings. Panic spreads like wildfire, and whispers of a demonic cult grew louder.

Arthur Pembroke, an esteemed artist, had been commissioned to paint a portrait of wealthy industrialist, Victoria Carlyle, a recluse known for her ethereal beauty. As he meticulously brushes strokes upon the canvas, an unsettling feeling creeps over him. Each day, he notices subtle changes in the portrait, Lady Victoria's countenance growing colder and her eyes filled with a menacing glare. Is he doing it unconsciously? Is a jealous rival somehow defacing his work? Why doesn't anyone else see it happening?

In a dimly lit music hall, renowned pianist Sebastian Blackwood prepared for his grand performance. As he swept his fingers across the ivory keys, an eerie melody filled the air, hauntingly beautiful. Night after night, the haunting melody grew louder, tormenting Sebastian's mind and driving him to the edge of madness.

Candela Obscura is a horror tabletop roleplaying game (TTRPG) about occult investigators who hunt down dangerous supernatural forces making incursions into a world very much like your own. Candela Obscura is also the name of the paranormal secret society charged with protecting the sprawling, turn-of-the-century city of Newfaire—a place built atop the ruins of an ancient, fallen civilization still teeming with the remnants of powerful magick.

We will be using the rules as presented in the free Quickstart Guide, but running homebrew scenarios of my design.
Adult Content or Controversial Themes: This game is intended to be in the Horror Genre. It will feature themes that some players might consider sensitive, including but not limited to: adult relations, violence to self and others, madness, eldritch monsters, etc. That said, Lines & Veils, X-Cards, and an Open Door Policy will be in effect.

Character Restrictions: We will be using the pre-generated Quickstart Guide characters.

Game Duration: Unknown exactly. I'm willing to go as long as there is interest, but with limited character advancement options I could see an upper limit.

Post Frequency: I'm in favor of a more relaxed pace, and longer posts to explore characters. 4 posts per week sounds good to me. More is allowed, but not required.

Player Experience Requirements: Open to anyone wanting to learn this new system. I'm new to the system as well, but have been playing World of Darkness and Call of Cthulhu style horror games for more than a decade. We'll learn together, it should be fun.

How to Apply: Post in this thread and I'll send invites.

Welcoming to Marginalized Groups: Yes.

Never played before but I'm interested!

Is anyone else going to play with us? Just curious.

Yeah, all are welcome. We'll start soon, but we can incorporate new players easily.

I don't know the system, but I do love good horror games.

Well, I've only read the Quickstart guide and heard it played in the first episode of the Critical Role Podcast. It's simple, but we'll all be learning together really.

I'm new to it too so cant wait for us all to learn how to play

I'm running this for a few people and the setting is great. Reminds me a bit of Carnival Row (without obvious faefolk) or perhaps the game Vaesen.

Highly recommend giving it a shot, and the sample adventure isn't overly long.

I am not specifically planning to use the sample adventure but I am using is as a guide...a framework for my own little story. If we like it it can turn into a longer game, but it could be short.

I was busy with irl stuff this weekend but we will beginning in earnest tomorrow.

It sounds like you have three which is probably enough. I do know the sample adventure, but if you want a fourth and you're changing things up, I'm available and interested.

Note: I'm in a fair number of games, so take me last if others express interest.

It seems like we don't have a lot of people clamoring for this. I've sent the invite. You make a fourth so I think that's good for now. I can always add one more if a straggler shows up.

Never played this system- but, would give it a try if you're looking for more players.
