Big picture… do you want us to just roll for whatever we want to? Or will you tell us when we should. For instance, to scrutinize these looks between the two of them. Would you prefer I roll and say "I want to know what’s with these guys"? Or will you say, "you can roll to see what’s up with these guys" if there’s something

If you want more than I state in a scene, you are free to roll to gain insight or spend a plot point to tell a "truth" within the scene (though, this truth cannot override anything that has already been stated). If you aren't sure how rolling in this system works, I can help walk you through it. I think the main key is to have an idea how each die you are adding to the dice pool enhances or informs the narrative.

As relatively new to pbp in general, I always wonder on the protocol of rolling. Do we just roll and if it gets used/is okay to roll than yay but if not it ignored? Or is everyone kind of different with it?

Yeah. I think Feirgon is saying you can go ahead and roll when you feel it’s appropriate. A lot of times on PbP, you’re right, you roll and if it’s the right roll or useful you use it. Otherwise ignore it. It saves time and back and forth for everyone.

Georgian can correct me if I’m wrong, but in cortex, you essentially pick one trait from each array (in this game: attribute, skill, distinction, gear, spell and ability, condition) that you can make relevant to the roll. You need at least 3. Then you roll them. You select 2 of your results to sum, and the third die is your effect die,. Essentially saying how well you did based on die type, not your result. If your summed die are over the Target Number, you succeed.

So if you look at my rolls in the IC: I looked at my CS and said "I’ll use wisdom to interpret what he’s seeing between them, along with his street smarts of reading between the lines he got from his childhood in the slums, and his social skills" (I chose an attribute, skill and distinction). I didn’t see how my gear or abilities could help me there, so I just had 3 die in the pool. Then I rolled.

I think I rolled an 8,4,5. But I wanted to get a good read on the situation, so I used the d8 for my effect die (the 5 I rolled). I summed up the 8 and 4, getting 12. So if the TN is less than 12 I succeeded.

I also tried to narrate my thought process to the dice pool in character, I think that’s one of the metatextual benefits of Cortex Prime.

Thanks Aegis! You did a great job explaining it however, you missed one small part. Once you roll your dice pool, you always take the two highest rolled dice and the effect die is the highest die that isn't one of those two (that didn't roll a 1). As such you rolled a 13 with a d6 effect die. With that said, for the most part, effect dice will only come into play when appropriate as this situation isn't likely to necessitate you needing assets and dealing with complications (unless that is what you want...I can't stop your character from making a scene or starting a brawl).

So, for most low-stakes situations, a simple pass/fail will be your two highest dice and against my two highest dice.
