Story - Part 2 - Icespire Peak

Aug 9, 2023 8:04 pm
You awake well rested. The fey diplomat as well as Froog slept in the protection of the central walled of area.
Kroxa wishes you a good morning and a few frogmen in his following offer you large wooden plates laden with food.
Kroxa also offers you rations and any other assistance the frogmen can offer in order to help you to beat back the trolls from Icespire Peak.

If you want to do any preparations you can do them now. The frogmen will do their best to fulfill any of your wishes but their resources are pretty limited. Anything but basic items are beyond their craftmenship.

Your characters also advance and get one new trait!!! I've found this handy link where you can get the trait list from page 33 onwards
Aug 14, 2023 1:05 am
Garic tops off his pack with food rations and thanks the frog men eager to set of on their next adventure.
Sep 4, 2023 1:02 pm
Sprout decides to stay behind and commune with some strange trees he's encountered along the way, so it's only the three of you who continue towards Icespire Peak
The way you chose is nearly indistinguishable from a normal hiking path, only a bit steeper. In narrow curves it's winding up the mountain. You are pretty sure that the path is man-made but very old. You recognize areas where parts of the mountain has been chiseled away in order to keep a straight path. You also encounter two short tunnels. Nevertheless you also encounter small obstacles like fallen rocks or landslides which you can circumvent easily but also hint that the original creators of the path are no longer maintaining it.
After a day of marching you encounter another area of the path that leads through a chiseled gap in the flank of the mountain. To both sides runes have been engraved into the stone.
Just as you wonder about what is written there you hear a scream.
You peer through the gap and see two humanoids, larger and broader than a regular human with hairy, white skin. They are holding large stone hammers in their hands. These seem to be the trolls you've been hearing about.
To their feet lies a silver item. You can't recognize what it is from this distance but the trolls seem to be argueing about it.
They haven't seen you yet. You could try to surprise attack them, sneak past them or look for another path...

Garic focuses and reaches out and tries to pull the object toward himself, away from the trolls.

But Garic doesn't have much time to investigate because the trolls come charging after the container. As they notice you they scream and begin to swing their hammers...

Garic's flame bursts miss the trolls and crash into the side of the mountain, loosing some debris.
The trolls are able to dodge one of the chakram but the other one hits it right in the face, leaving a nasty gash
Martina's attacks both hit one of the trolls, the bolts sticking out of its chest
The trolls roar in anger and swing their hammers at Vienne and Martina.

The first two of Garic's attacks both hit and the troll starts burning. Vienne's chakram flies at the trolls but because she is concentrating both on the spell and her attack, the chakram misses and returns but at least she was able to imbue it with magical energy that should cease regenerating effects on the next hit.
Martina's attacks both hit and the troll cries out in anger.
It raises it's hammer but the troll suddenly jerks and coughs. It drops it's weapon and succumbs to to flames.
The second troll seems to be especially enraged by this and swings it's hammer at Garic like a madman. But Garic swiftly dodges both attacks

Garic hits the troll and it erupts in flames. Martina and Vienne both attack the troll and inflict severe wounds.
The troll roars and rears up but then collapses on the ground before it can do anything

The final roar of the troll echoes for a while and then it's silent. The two smoldering corpses of the trolls lie in front of you. You think you can see a doorway at the side of the mountain right where the trolls originally stood.

"Thank you Garic." Martina takes a seat and waits for the magic to take effect. She begins thinking aloud. "Those trolls weren't as tough as I feared they might be. Although their regeneration ability was interesting. I wonder if it's the same kind of magic you're doing now or if it's just part of their biology."

When she is ready to stand, Martina walks toward the fallen trolls to salvage whatever crossbow bolts she can. She pulls one from the prone corpse and examines the bloody head. She ponders it then makes a decision. She pulls her waterskin out of her pack, empties it out, and puts it to one of the troll's wounds, draining the blood into the waterskin. "Whether it's magic or mundane, I have a feeling that the secret to the trolls' regeneration can be found in their blood." she offers by way of explanation to her companions. "If I get ahold of the right alchemical equipment, I bet I can figure it out."
OOC:

Im a bit better with plants but i can help a bit if you like. Garric offers Martina

Looking to Vienne he asks Do you need healing before pulling out tht silver item and Looking it over.

Vienne sits down where she is for a moment and watches the other two before standing back up. "If it won't be hard on you, that would be great. It's not too awful, so don't worry about it if you can't." She offers Garic a smile as she answers. She isn't sure how difficult it is for Garic to heal people and she doesn't want to be the reason he is exhausted later.

"I'm not familiar with these kinds of things, so I'll trust you know what you're doing, Martina. I can try and help if you give me instructions though." She isn't even sure what the right alchemical equipment would be, let alone how to use it.

Martina easily collects a full waterskin of troll blood. It's of a pretty thick consistency, a bit like warm honey. It could very well be a lead to their regeneration ability but she'll need a fully stocked laboratory in order to be sure and more importantly be able to reproduce the effect.

Garic heals you all and then has a look at the silver item. It's a metallic cylinder with a screwed on top. It's finely made and decorated with geometric patterns. He screws off the top and finds two pieces of parchment inside, a map and a scroll with runes.
You have some difficulties in interpreting the map but Martina recognizes the scroll with runes:
It is a spell scroll made to create a strong magical effect.
[ +- ] Scroll of Molding Stone
Having opened the item you have two ways ahead of you. You can continue up the mountain on the path that you came along or you could go through the doorway in the side of the mountain.
It's very tall and the sides are decorated with runes. The doors are made out of stone, without any decorations and stand slightly ajar. When you peek in you can hear dripping and occasional thumping but you can't see anything but a hallway leading into the mountain.
OOC:
You can use a check to make sense of the map. If you have any trait that may give you advantage on the check you may apply it.

So, can anyone use scrolls? he asks sheepishly. Magic always came natual to me but I never did get the hang of that runic structured magic stuff and shrugs
Sep 19, 2023 9:11 am
Martina lights up when she sees the runic scroll. "Let me take a look!" She takes the scroll and, after some time mentally translating, she speaks up "Ah! It's a spell for manipulating stone—shaping it, growing it, or reducing it. I practiced reading scrolls like this at university. This one seems to be a bit more powerful than what I'm used to, but I think I could cast it if the need were to arise." Martina stashes the spell scroll in her pack. "I'll hang onto it if that's alright."
Sep 19, 2023 12:53 pm
Sure go for it. and hands her the scroll case with both papers.

Looking around, at the burned bodies of the two trolls then into the darkness of the mountain depths, Garic scratches his head and muses I think I got carried away. I took the scroll out of curiosity and just as a prank but whne they attacked. Eh, well . . .
I am thining attacking the first trolls we find is not the best way to get into their good graces to figure out why they are moving down to the other peoples lands. Not realy sure I want to head into their home and talk with them at this point.

As he talks Garic uses a bit of magic to clean his shields and cloths of any trol blood then moves to do the same to the others.
Anyway, do we head up the trail or into the dark? I prefer the open sky and fresh air but am curious about the cave. Maybey we can check it out on the way back down? making it clear he would preffer the trail option without saying so.
Sep 19, 2023 9:56 pm
Vienne and Garic study the map. You see mountain ranges, valleys and rivers as well as cities and castles but you don't see which area in general the map is supposed to depict.
For all you know the map could be of any area all over the known and unknown world

Sep 20, 2023 3:23 pm
Vienne is happy to let Martina handle scroll related things, and turns to thinking about Garic's question. "You're probably right, our first impression is going to be terrible. I'm inclined to head up the trail, and besides, the answer we need might very well be up there as well." If they ignored the initial attack they did, Vienne still wasn't sure that the trolls would have been helpful. Or even that they wouldn't have killed them just for entering the house. They did fly into a huge rage over one item, after all. Words could have worked there. "Plus, if we get some height, maybe we can see something similar to this map by looking down."

Great! and Garic adjusts his pack before heading up the trail anxious to be away from this place, uncertain about the trail tribe numbers and territory.
Sep 21, 2023 6:46 am
Seeing no strong reason to choose one path over the other, Martina follows along behind.
Sep 21, 2023 9:10 am
You choose to leave the doorway behind, at least for now.
For a few hours you follow along the path. It becomes steeper and narrower. You still recognize the signs that the path was constructed by someone who knew what they were doing but it also becomes more and more eroded as you continue along.
In the afternoon the sun is becoming clouded and a cool, strong wind is coming up. Above you you can see the castle on top of the mountain clearer and clearer. It's made from dark grey stone and incredibly it seems to be in a pretty good shape. While some of the finer features like decorative statues and merlons are visibly damaged, the main tower and the walls are all still intact.

After another hour of walking you arrive at a section of the path were a rock slide is blocking the way.
A narrow strip right at the edge of the path is still walkable but it's risky given the strong winds. You could also try to climb over the rocks but you don't know wether they'll become loose.
Or you could try to climb up the mountain side until you get to the an unblocked section of the mountain path
Sep 21, 2023 12:04 pm
Garic looks to see if over if their roots is long enough to cross the rocky section of the path
If only we had someone small enough to cross the path first dressing a rope who could then hold that side to help others cross he says while winking at Marina.
What do you think, you up for a dangerous mission with peril and a change of perspective? he worries her with an amused tone and pulls some rope from his pack
Sep 23, 2023 1:54 am
Vienne looks at the obstacles before them and speaks to Ahki. "Think you could get the rope across bud?" She looks at Garic when she continues. "If we have something that could be wedged at the end, he might be able to do it. Or maybe he could test the rocks for us, see what it is like with his lighter body?"
Sep 23, 2023 8:03 am
"A gap that size would have been plenty big enough when I was a gopher." Martina muses. "You know, I never felt quite the same since I changed back. It’s hard to explain, but it feels like that gopher form is still part of me—like maybe if I focused in just the right way…" And suddenly, to everyone’s surprise, Martina vanishes in a puff of magical smoke and the gopher that the group met back on the road to Icespire peak is standing in her place.

"Eek!" gopher-Martina squeaks in surprise. "I didn’t think it would really happen!" She stretches and scampers around, getting re-accustomed to her rodential body. "Alright—let’s try your rope plan. Hopefully I can get myself back to normal on the other side."
OOC:
Not sure if a roll is required for this. If not, disregard.

Sep 24, 2023 9:53 pm
Martina easily climbs the rocks in her gopher body. She's about halfway over the rockslide when something hits her from the side. At first she thought that a loose rock hit her but when the 'rock' starts to scratch her she identifies it as a fat rat. It wouldn't be a worthy adversary if Martina was in her human form but as a gopher she's quite vulnerable. It starts to attack Martina and she somehow has to find a way get rid of it.
OOC:
This isn't combat but rather a skill check. Garic and Vienne see what's happening and can try to help which would give Martina advantage on her skill check if they have an applicable skill.

With one end of the rope in her gopher jaws and Garic holding the other, Martina ignores the rat's scratches and leaps toward the edge of the cliff. So long as I can keep hold of this rope, I'll be safe. she tells herself. Surely this rat won't follow me over the edge.

OOC:
Rolled again for Garic as you only rolled 2d4 but it didn't change anything
Garic wants to help her and conjures a gust of wind. It dislodges some stones which send both Martina and the rat over the ledge.
Martina at least is held by the rope while the rat is dropping down the side of the mountain and vanishes from view. Martina is swinging against the side of the mountain creating some nasty bruises.
Martina takes 2 damage; 1 from the rat, 1 from the drop

With the rat out of the way Garic and Vienne pull up Martina again and at the second attempt she manages to cross the rockslide and she fixes a rope across just in time for her to turn back into a human.

After the rock slide the path becomes steeper again. A small wall at the ledge along the path is preventing you from dropping down the mountain too easily.
After an hour the sun begins to set. It's still windy and you can hear a droning sound. As you sneak forwards investigating its source you notice a troll sitting on the small wall playing an instrument that looks like a didgeridoo.
The troll seems to be quite old and its fur is matted, with areas of missing hair covered in scars instead. Beside it a hammer is leaning against the wall. You can't see anyone else...

Once they are all across the rough patch Garic heals Martina. Sorry I couldnt help more. I have this totally rational fear of things at the bottom of cliffs trying to catch me at high speed and he grins.

As they hear the humming noise Garic gets his shields ready and advances cautiously and softly.
Upon seeing the lone troll he pauses and whispers Think we can get him to talk?
Sep 28, 2023 6:34 pm
Vienne is just glad they somehow got through that with Martina coming out okay. Not their finest hour, that was for sure. When they reach the strange looking troll, she isn't quite sure what to make of him. She lowers her arm as she whispers back, and Ahki slithers off onto the ground. "Maybe? Let's see if he reacts to Ahki and, if he does, what kind of reaction it is." She motions to Ahki to go and investigate the troll. Maybe he will smell like something, she just hopes they can learn something in general before going and saying hi.
Sep 28, 2023 8:46 pm
Akhi slithers up on the troll. At first the troll doesn't react and keeps on playing but when Akhi doesn't leave it lowers the instrument. It stretches towards the hammer leaning at the wall beside them but then reconsiders and instead turns to Vienne's companion.
Are you with the empress? I already told her minions that I'm not interested in her dealings. I won't stand in her way but I also don't want to have anything to do with her business. I will mind my own things. Tell her that... the troll says in a deep, nearly singing voice. Then it turns away again and continues to play on the instrument

The last problem we encountered was regarding trolls coming down into the lowlands so we. Do you know why they are doing this now? Is it due to the trouble with the empress? It quickly sees that you seem to be no danger and lowers the hammer.
Who are you? You want to learn about legends? Go somewhere else, this place here is about to become very inhospitable.
Yes the 'trolls', how you call my people, are under the influence of the empress. She came here... not to long ago. A young woman, pretty cheerful. That was before she entered the castle.
She told me that she wanted to explore it. Somehow she managed to get in and after a few days lights began appearing at the castle. When she left the castle again she was someone else. The same body but not the same person. She managed to lure most of my people into following her. She talked about restoring her empire and called herself Empress of Nezhulft.
Oct 2, 2023 3:24 am

Ahki waits for Vienne by the troll once Garic comes over. When she gets there, she lowers her arm down for him to slither up and wrap around her shoulders. "What do you call your people? I have only ever heard you referred to as trolls, I hope we didn't offend you by using it. Do you, or your people, have tales about the castle, perhaps? You live much closer than we do and might be better informed."
Oct 5, 2023 8:42 am
We call ourselves the Mountaineers but you can also call us trolls. When we were still trading with the fey they said that other peoples refer to us as such and we took no issue.

We don't really have tales about the castle itself. Only that we as a people were driven from our lands long ago and that this mountain was created for us as a new home.
We usually avoided the castle. The doors were always closed and the few who were brave enough to climb the walls and get in never returned. And it always gave me a shiver.

Garic meanwhile thinks about tales about the empress and remembers that a traveling merchant once passed through his village with a wagon full of old stuff. One of the items for sale was a book called 'Rise and Fall of Nezhulft'
He took a quick look inside and read a passage about a battle of the mages and about landscape altering magic but ultimately he didn't buy it because it was very expensive.

As it is increasingly becoming dark and cloudy you should maybe think about where to rest for the night
Oct 6, 2023 7:08 am
Martina, who had been listening in quietly, bows graciously to the old troll—or Mountaineer—then addresses her companions. "Where shall we head for the night? I don't fancy turning back given the state of the path, so perhaps we press on?"
Oct 7, 2023 2:01 am
"Yeah, the path back down seems...undesirable in waning light." She turns to the troll - as they don't seem to mind it is probably easier to use the word troll right now - they are speaking to. "You, I imagine, would know this mountain well. Or at least better than any of us. Is there a place you would recommend for rest along the way?"
Oct 9, 2023 11:35 am
I am fine camping out rather than trying to stay in the haunted castle.

Turning back to the troll he asks Anywhere nearby we can stay out of the way? You know, avoid the "inhospitable" events that are coming here soon. What is coming anyhow? The Empress and your former tribesmen or something else?
Oct 9, 2023 8:33 pm
The troll tilts its head slightly. Before I tell you about resting places I have to ask you what you are doing here? The last one who explored here seems to have woken something up in the castle and I'm skeptical on what you want to do here...
You don't see any signs of aggression in the troll's stance but it seems to be eager to learn about your answer
Oct 9, 2023 9:19 pm
Initially we just wanted to travel and explore. But your story is troubling. We have seen the consequences of this spread down your mountains and across the land. It may soon bring trouble to our homes. Now we simply wish to calm these troubling events.

We don't want more trouble and initially it seemed as if we may need to enter the castle to solve this problem. Note I am unsure. It may be best to learn more about the empire but we also don't want the situation to continue getting worse.

If you have guidance we would appreciate any wisdom or knowledge you can share.
Oct 11, 2023 1:13 am
"Garic is right, we wanted to see what the castle was at first. No one really knows at home. But it does seem to be causing issues - or the empress is. We don't want to make anything worse, hopefully better." It wasn't anything new, but Vienne wanted to back Garic up.
Oct 12, 2023 5:20 pm
The troll thinks about your words for a few minutes. I... I... You seem to be honest, good people. A bit inexperienced but good in your heart. Let me show you something
The troll beckons you to follow them. After half an hour of walk up the path you were following, the troll turns right through rough terrain. After a few minutes you arrive at a cave entrance.
This is where I live and I may have some things that could interest you.
You enter the cave. It's quite big. The troll leads you up a ramp to another 'room' of the cave. In it you see a large bookshelf laden with scrolls and tomes.
The troll points at a box in the shelf.
In here are scrolls about the empire. We found them scattered around in the ruins here. I can't read them but you may be able to decipher their meaning. You also may also spend the night here if you wish so...
Oct 13, 2023 3:24 am
Thank you for your hospitality, and trust. Garic is starting to feel really bad about the first two trolls. They're not the monsters he thought. Garic will start looking over the records to see if he can find out anything about what is going on.

Garic investigates the scrolls. The languages and script is not known to him but there are some passages that look like the same text written in different languages. Through cross referencing he's able to do some basic translations.
Apparently in a time long ago there was an empire called Nezhulft that reached from a capital far in the east to the area where you are now.
Nezhulft seems to have been ruled by a caste of magees that elected an emporer amongst them.
While Garic can't decipher the details it seems as if the empire developed great magical powers that lead to them being able to rise up the mountain that you are standing on now.
But this deed required them to sacrifice humanoids and this ultimately lead to their downfall.
A coalition of kingdoms were able to topple the empire in a great battle just south of the mountain.
With their armies scattered the empire of Nezhulft dissolved.
While many of their cities were razed, the sites holding their magical powers, including the castle on top of Icespire Peak, were just sealed off.
The texts end with a note that the author hopes that no one will try to revive the empire as its cruel rule will only bring pain to everyone but the ruling caste in a potential new empire.

Meanwhile Vienne uses the ingredients in the troll's cave to cook up a delicious meal.
Simply incredible. I never thought about roasting the turnips before cooking them. It gives so much flavour to the stew. I don't have much to share with you but maybe this will help you with your journeys. The troll says to Vienne
It presents a bandage infused with herbal oils to Vienne
[ +- ] Healing Bandages
Oct 15, 2023 8:25 pm
Vienne is in her element, really. Feeding people always makes her happy and reminds her of home. Which, to be fair, isn't that far away but it is the first time she has wandered off for this long. She is more than thrilled to show him what she does. "You are so sweet! Thank you so much, and I'm glad you enjoyed it." She knows this is something she might need, so she accepts the gift, a huge smile on her face.
Oct 25, 2023 1:30 am
Garic shares what he has learned with the others before yawning and pulling out his bed roll. He pauses to concider but decides to trust the troll and setles down for a good nights sleep. ZZzzzzzz....
Oct 29, 2023 8:54 pm
The troll shows you a place to sleep and you all accept the offer. The night is very calm and unremarkable.
However in the morning you are rudely woken up by a high pitched scream and a rumbling sound. The whole mountain is shaking. You quickly run out of the cave. After a few minutes the rumbling stops. You look around and assess any potential damage. The cave withstood the shaking but an avalanche blocked your way back.
You could try to climb back down through the masses of snow that the avalanche left or continue your way back up. Above the castle has started to emit a pulsating glowing light.
This is not good the troll mumbles The castle has never done this.
Oct 29, 2023 10:20 pm
Then I suggest we go and make sure it doesn't do it again. Garic says and he tightens the straps on his pack and secures his shields. I think we should get up there, preferably while there is daylight, and see what we can learn.

You bid your farewell and make your way up to the castle.
You don't encounter anyone or anything. No animals, no trolls just eerie silence.

After a few hours of an exhausting ascend you finally stand in front of the castle. The dark bricks out of which the walls are made are sprinkled with sparkly light dots. And the whole castle is pulsating with light. Not a blinding light, just as if it was... breathing.

The main entrance consists of a huge two winged door which unfortunately is closed. It's made of wooden beams and engraved with strange symbols. The symbols also emit a faint light
Oct 31, 2023 2:15 pm
Vienne stares at the castle before them. "Hey guys? Do we know what to do with an entirely magic castle? The breathing light stuff is kind of creepy." She isn't quite sure what their jovial adventure had turned into, but it wasn't that she wanted to stop. More that she suddenly felt entirely out of her depth. And she didn't want to disappoint that nice troll.

Garic wants to have his voice sound grand, loud and resonating but he by doing this he doesn't focus on being comprehensible and he only produces a booming gibberish sound
What? Are you trying to mock me? You will suffer if you try to mock me. But I'm generous today. You get a last try to tell me what you want the door answers
Nov 9, 2023 3:45 am
Looking sheepish he silences his magis and looks to his companions for help with an appologetic grin
Nov 9, 2023 4:42 am
"We've come to see what can be done regarding those in the keep and those down the mountain getting along. And there's a missing elf in there as well." Vienne rather thought Garic's voice had been funny, and grins back at him. Hey, at least they were having fun, and it made her feel less tense.
Nov 9, 2023 6:15 pm
What can be done regarding those in the keep and down below getting along? Well you can leave or... the voice pauses. After an awkwardly long pause the voice continues
... or you can come in and we can talk. Negotiate...

The doors suddenly swing wide open and you struggle to get out of their way in time.
The open doorway reveals a long hallway with a high ceiling held up by black stone columns. In front of each column stands a ghostly figure. They seem to be or rather have been knights. While the bodies are ghostly blue they still wear their black armor and have a greatsword in their hands that is firmly planted on the ground.
There are 6 columns and correspondingly 6 ghostly knights

On a balcony above the door at the other end of the hallway you see a fey woman. She's dressed in a black, silken robe. In her right hand she holds a scepter made out of silver.
So you are from 'down the mountain'. Very interesting. You surely know the peoples down there. What are they like? Do they have kingdoms? Armies? Great mages!?
Her voice sounds both smooth and slightly mocking but she seems to be interested in what you have to say.
OOC:
Your characters don't know of any great kingdoms nearby. Also no grand armies just militias for self-defence of the villages. You also hardly know any mages. The few you've heard of are either the one you met earlier or are rather legendary creatures.
Be as honest and RP as you wish with her ;)
Nov 10, 2023 9:01 pm
"Are those of great interest to you? If so, I'm afraid we may not be the best source of knowledge." Vienne didn't enter and just looked through the open doorway, a bit creeped out by the soldiers.
Nov 10, 2023 9:11 pm
Shrugging Garic steps forward to stand inside the door looking around.
Our lands are not great centers of trade or of much value so the grand things of the world tend to leave us to ourselves. There are kingdoms and armies but with no enemy to fight and little for the to protect they tend to stay far from here. But this has lead the people to general learn to look out for ourselves. There are always a few who move to protect the rest, like us as well as others from the trolls and elves that live nearby.
Nov 11, 2023 4:29 pm
Oh how delightful! So there is an unclaimed stretch of land in need of a loving monarch. Very good. Please come inside and we will chat about the lands down there and your role in the prosperous future your lands hold the fey cheerfully states.
She waves at the knights and the two farthest from you open the doors below her balcony and beckon you to come inside
Nov 11, 2023 4:52 pm
It is claimed. We are happy to not have a monarch imposing decrees and leaving taxes. Garic states firmly while trying to remain polite. He heads towards they opened door.
Nov 15, 2023 7:10 pm
"Yeah...we're pretty good down there with how it is now." Vienne hesitates before she follows Garic to the door, unwilling to let her friend go in alone just because the entire place is super spooky.
Nov 15, 2023 10:14 pm
You go through the opened door. It leads into an impressive chamber with an arched ceiling high above your head. A balcony runs around the whole room about 20 feet above your head. It is held up by massive wooden beams. The walls are decorated with ornaments and mirrors made from polished black stone. A massive table is lying on its side on the right side off the room. Beside it is a pile of finely crafted chairs.

In the place where you presume the the table was, you see a massive mirror, at least double your height. It seems top be made from polished dark grey metal and is held by a silver frame which is covered in ornaments. As you enter the room the knights close the door behind you.

Look into the mirror. The mirror of possibilities. And you will see what is possible, how you can BENEFIT your people, yourself and whoever else you decide to expand your gratitude to the woman calls down from the balcony above you.
Nov 16, 2023 2:48 am
"Um, I'm good. I'd rather not look in the mirror." She did her best to be pleasant about the refusal, but this woman didn't even try to be subtle.
Nov 17, 2023 1:25 am
No thanks. If it takes make for it to make sense then it doesn't make sense and is likely a bad idea.

The woman above you starts to clap slowly Veeeeery impressive... Well frankly, I understand your hesitation. I too had to think about the offering . I'll give you some time to think. You could bring great value to your communities with the powers I offer you

The woman disappears in a puff of purple smoke. At the some time the door behind you shuts close and locks itself. Garic immediately tried to open it again but doesn't budge at all.
At the other side of the room is another door.

What do you want to do?
Nov 20, 2023 5:38 pm
"Well, I officially hate it here. What do you think? I could have Ahki peek through the door."
Nov 21, 2023 10:17 pm
Good idea. The more we know the better. I definitely don't want to have some ancient mirror fill my head with visions and who knows what else. The question is how do we break the enchantment on that elf?

As he talks Garic looks around the room.
OOC:
are the knights in the room with us?
Nov 21, 2023 10:24 pm
Vienne quickly checks the other door and finds it unlocked. She quickly peers through it and finds a long hallway behind it.She sends Akhi ahead to scout

After a few minutes the familiar returns. It reports one open door on either side and a door at the end of the hallway.
Akhi couldn't reach the door at the end but could look through the other two doorways.
Behind the left one is a spiral stairway that leads up and behind the other one seems to be a kitchen

Garic meanwhile checks the room for anything useful or threatening but doesn't find either

You head down the corridor, your steps eerily echoing through the room. As you reach the open doorways you look into the kitchen weapons drawn in order to fewnd off any adversary in there, but no one is in there...
It's actually quite unremarkable, the kind of kitchen you'd find in your town's inn. Copper pots, pans and an assortment of cutlery hang on the wall above a massive wooden countertop. An oven for cooking is in the corner, beside it is a sink. Interestingly the kitchen shows sign of recent use. The oven is still warm and there are dirty dishes in the sink. Also a door in the back leads to a larder that's stocked with basic foods like potatoes, carrots and some meats.

Vienne looks around. Investigates the oven where there are still some embers, finds some potato peels, also the countertop hasn't been cleaned.
Based on her findings she determines that the kitchen has been used a few hours ago.
She also finds a splash of what appears to be a stew in the doorway leading to the spiral staircase
Nov 24, 2023 3:04 pm
upwards and onwards? Vienne, can you have Ahki keep an eye out at the door to the main hall. That will let them watch this hall way and it can then meet us on the balcony or join us if we get to far from there. Garic takes a few steps up the stairs looking up. He will proceed if the others follow
Nov 24, 2023 9:04 pm
Vienne points the stew out to Garic as she agrees. She has Ahki stay as far from her as he can, to keep an eye out until he needs to rejoin them "What do you think we'll find? Do you...think we're stuck here?"
Nov 24, 2023 9:14 pm
Garic and Vienne make their way up the stairs. At the next floor they find two ways onwards. One leads back to the balcony that's in the room you came from the other ends in a doors. It's a bit ajar and you can peek behind it. You see a troll in robes, clearly not fitted to its stature. It runs around and sorts book into several shelves that are placed in the room
Nov 30, 2023 3:18 am
"Which do you want, Garic? I'm curious about the troll, and maybe they won't try and kill us on sight?" She really wasn't sure how 'welcome' they were in here.
Nov 30, 2023 4:28 am
Stilling his flames Garic stretches out his senses to feel any nearby magic.
Whispering softly he relays what he learns before replying Yeah lets greet the troll. We need more information. Gesturing her to the side Garic pushes the door open enough to frame himself but keep Vienne hidden, for now.

Garic let's his magical senses reach out. This place reeks of magic. The whole castle is engulfed in magical energy and it's coming from further within.
The troll too seems to carry some magical energy within but Garic can sense that it has been granted to them and is not coming from any source within

The troll quickly turns around to you, a thick book in their hands. The eyes go wide und the troll reaches into the robe but withdraws the hand quickly and relaxes.
Did the empress grant you access? In that case I'm more than happy to help her guests.

Let me introduce myself. My name is Gronka. Proud scholar of the empress. I'm afraid I can't help you with your questions. She currently teaches me to weave the magical forces around us but she hasn't come around to teach me history.
You too must be aspiring scholars.
Together we will make the troll nation the strongest and wealthiest in the whole world. We will rule strongly but fairly
Dec 8, 2023 4:30 am
Well, a scholar didn't sound so bad - until they brought up ruling others. "Is that what the mirror does? Make you agree with her?"
Dec 8, 2023 12:44 pm
No. The empress is very adamant about free will. The mirror just shows you what you can be when you join forces with her and bring her just ruling over this world. Your people too will have a place under her rule. It will be wonderful. No more conflict, only we all united in her service...
The troll absent mindedly gazes into the sky as if they are in love....
Dec 8, 2023 4:14 pm
If it requires gazing into a magic mirror to convince people then I am not sure it is free will. I agree everyone working together would be great, but why do we have to submit to the empress for it to work? What did you saw the name of this nation was again? As they chat Garic starts to wander the room looking at the titles of the books.

Nezhulft is the name of the empire that is to be born again. We have to submit to the empress because she will be the one who keeps our differences in check. Without her we will quarrel between us. She will be the gentle boot that keeps everyone in check who wants to disrupt our newfound unity...
the troll says while fidgeting with their robes

Garic meanwhile looks at the books.
Most of them are about magic powers and how to wield them
The Art of Letting the Dead Serve You
Painful Incantations
Poisonous Delights
Dominating The Weak Minded

are some of the titles that catch his eyes.

He also notices two doors leading out of the library.
Each one has the place where it leads chiseled in above it:
Throne Room and Study Room
Dec 9, 2023 8:05 pm
"This sounds...kind of not of our free will. Sure, I'm all in on the idea of everyone getting along, but I don't think one person forcing us to do so is a good thing. Unity is great! Tyranny is not." Vienne tries to glance around and pay attention, but mostly what she wants now is to leave. "What happens to those who don't agree to be under her thumb?"
Dec 10, 2023 2:56 pm
Oh... Those that don't agree will pay the ultimate price for disrupting our unity. Their sacrifice will be an example for those that want to sow discord Gronka says while smiling slightly
Dec 10, 2023 11:07 pm
That! That right there is coercion by force and not free will!

Now, if the people who this happens to in the first place agreed to these rules that would be one thing. . . BAHHHH!

Forget it you are under the spell and can't even think for yourself. A total waste of time trying to convince you of anything.

Wandering back to Vienne he whispers Any ideas? We need to find the source of the power to break the spell. Might be that mirror or might be somewhere else and the mirror is just a tool to recruit more thugs.

Then Louder Still is doesn't pay to act rashly. The empress said we could look around and would join her after understanding so . . . . The study seems a good place to gain understanding and he looks to Vienne for confirmation before heading towards the door and through.
Dec 14, 2023 2:54 pm
The definition of free will really had changed since they arrived here. She had to agree with Garic though, they wouldn't convince someone under a spell. "Yeah, the study sounds good. Better to make an informed decision!" She moves with Garic, wary of being alone since everyone was nuts here. As she did, she whispered back to him. "Agreed, but it might even be the empress herself that maintains the spell. There must be some reason she needed to wit for someone to enter the castle before starting her grand plan. Maybe we can find out why, and use it?"
Dec 14, 2023 3:17 pm
You will understand... the troll murmurs after you as you leave the library and enter the study room

The study room has two rows of small desks each outfitted with a lantern. Then there is an empty space and at the far side of the room is a huge table crafted from dark wooden planks. It's not a regular table though. A wooden rim is running around the edge and the surface is covered in white sand.
At the side opposite of you there are three statues, staring at the table. Their military outfit hints at them being military commanders of some kind.
A voice is whispering, barely audible. Want to see? Want to know why this castle is important? Step up to the commander's table and he'll show you....the history
You can't see anyone else in the study though.

At the far side you see another door with the words "Crystal Chamber" chiseled above it
Dec 15, 2023 3:30 pm
Before proceeding Garic will fell for magical effects or items in the room as he wanders around. Without looking at the table he examines the statues Not looking to be petrified here but I am beginning to suspect we may have to interact a bit with the magics of the place to ever figure out what is going on.
Dec 15, 2023 4:08 pm
Garic feel s the magic in the room. He can feel magic everywhere in the castle but in this room it flows like a stream and seems to be almost.... playful

The statues are more abstract figures than life-like depictions of human beings. Garic suspects that a petrified person would be much more detailed...
Dec 15, 2023 4:17 pm
Nothing ventured, nothing gained Garic says, swallowing, and look onto the "commander's table"
Dec 15, 2023 8:34 pm
Garic looks at the sand. He hears whispering from the statues.
Five Kingdoms. All fractured
The sand forms into a hilly landscape with five castles. Little men form themselves from the sand and fight each other while trying to storm the castles.
Nezhulft was one of them, not the strongest but the wisest. While the other kingdoms only valued raw strength wisdom was highly regarded here. Books and scrolls were brought to its main stronghold.
Little men carrying books form themselves and walk to one of the castles.
The king and his ministers learnt to tap the magical powers that flow all around us. While others wielded swords and spears, their armies wielded fire and lightning
Some of the men fighting in the sand begin to throw small fireballs that disintegrate their foes.
Nezhulft began to end the time of war by taking over kingdom after kingdom by using their minds rather than muscles and brutality
The tiny men that threw the fireballs breach the walls of the four other castles and position themselves on top of them
The five kingdoms were replaced by one glorious empire! The time of war and conflict ended...
Or rather should have ended. There was still dissent in the hearts of the people.
The emporer in his endless wisdom decreed that people who showed dissent were allowed to repent. But whoever continued to resent the newfound peace and order had to pay...

You see five sandmen appear. One of them swings an axe at another one and it disintegrates into loose sand again.
The others bow down
Nevertheless remnants of the other four kingdoms were able to form a unified army and attacked Nezhulft together
You see little sandmen pop up all over the table, killing other sandmen
Initially the rebellion could be crushed but the emporer took extra measures in order to ensure that his reign keeps on. Beneath the castle where the scriptures that formed the basis of his power were stored a giant mountain was summoned. Also the emporer contained his spirit in a giant crystal that he sealed inside the castle. So that even when his physical body died, his spirit would carry on
You see a large, spiky mountain form beneath a castle in the sand, heaving it up.
but all this effort was in vain. In the end a new leader was able to conquer most of the imperial land. The emporer fought a valiant last battle but was slain during a cavalry charge. But just as before the coalition that lead to the emporer's downfall shattered. The empire decayed into a lot of small warring states. But in the castle upon the mountain the spirit of the emporer lives on. Ready to take possession of a willing body once more. Peace will reign again...
You see villages and castles pop up all over the landscape while the mountain on which the castle presides persists
The emporer will return. And peace will reign under his hard but merciful rule...
All the figures in the sand collapse and the table is completely still...

Vienne watched the little show in awe. The story sounded nice - but obviously biased. Highly. "This sounds like a nice thing in theory, but garbage in reality. It obviously wasn't peaceful, as people didn't like it. The crystal sounds interesting though, assuming that his soul is still based there or can return if the host dies." She looked down at the table and took a chance. "Can you show us where the crystal is?"
Dec 16, 2023 2:10 pm
The whispering stops and after some time the upper body of a person forms out of the sand. It's a man, very thin with scars all over his face. He looks terrified and looks at you with his eyes wide open in fear.
Please... I didn't mean to attack the guards... But they took my son in order to build another road. He's only 14 and I already lost two children in the war... Please... show mercy. I learned my lesson... I wont do it again

The statues whisper What this man is not telling you is that this isn't is first offense against our rule. He already stole from the emporer by breaking into a warehouse and taking a bag of grain...
Show that you are worthy to meet the emporer from face to face by practicing the appropriate punishment for this man's actions...

The man out of sand folds his hands... P...Please... don't.... I learned my lesson
Dec 16, 2023 7:10 pm
Vienne listened to the man as her stomach sank. That is your glorious peace? He probably barely had food - because you steal grain when you're hungry - and emotionally devastated that you took his 14 year old kid? After he's had the grief of losing two other children...probably in the war you started? Even then, how can someone pronounce judgment when they don't know all of the facts? I have your biased version, and his biased version, and only those two things to form my opinions on. Do you have, you know, actual facts?"
Dec 16, 2023 11:31 pm
Turning to Vienne he says Sounds like we should visit this crystal and see for ourselves. This magic construct likely simply obeys commands.

To the table he says Show a map of the castle and the caverns underneath it.
Dec 17, 2023 2:19 pm
"Yeah, you're right. Good thinking." She probably shouldn't have tried to talk to a table, that was pretty silly. Hopefully the map would give them an idea of where to go.
Dec 17, 2023 9:38 pm
You don't know how to pass judgement even though you have all the necessary information. The man broke the emporers law two times. That is all you needed to know. Clemency is a gift best used precisely. Too much and you will be overwhelmed by those who don't have any., the statues whisper.
You are too soft to serve with the troops but you will be a good nurse
The man collapses into the sand.

After Garic commands the table to show the map there is silence for a few seconds. Then, slowly, a model of the castle forms itself out of the sand.
It splits in two so that you can see the interior. It's a crude model though and you have difficulty interpreting it...

Vienne and Garic both do their best to interpret the model of the castle. Garic identifies the cavern where the crystal most likely is. It's a huge dome right under the castle's main tower.
He points at it and Vienne quickly figures out the optimal way to get there. The spiral staircase from where you came from should house an entrance to the caverns below. You just have to find it...

While Garic checks the map again Vienne goes to the spiral staircase leading down to the kitchen and checks the lower floor for any entrances. She doesn't find any. At least directly. But what she does find is that behind the staircase there is a 3x3 grid of tiles. One place in the grid is free and the other tiles slide freely so that you can change them around.

The grid currently looks like this:

HLF
NZU
ET

Garic meanwhile finds out that the only way into the caverns seems to be the one Vienne found on the map

As Garic slides in the last tile the whole area around the tiles begins to glow.
After a brief flash of light they disappear and instead a staircase leads down
Vienne and Garic go down the staircase, Vienne taking the lead following the path she remembered from the map of the castle.
The tunnels are dry and silent. You don't hear anything but your own footsteps, don't even see spiders or rats.
After half an hour of navigating through the tunnels beneath the castle the path ends at a massive iron door.
Runes are engraved in the stone around the door.
OOC:
Guess the puzzle was a bit easy ^^
Dec 21, 2023 11:50 pm
Vienne is thrilled when Garic solves the puzzle. Puzzles weren't her forte. The tunnel is...unnerving but the giant door was more so. "Why does this keep getting creepier? Think we can read these? Maybe they're magic?" She studied them, and tried to see if they contained any kind of magic.

Let me take a look Garic tries as well. In addition he tries to sense magic on the door.

Garic can decipher the meaning of the runes.

Garic touches the door. It doesn't seem to be magical. At least he can't sense any magic. But the door is locked...
Dec 23, 2023 3:57 pm
Garic looks for a keyhole or other point of failure on the door Not sure how much of the door will be affected by the potion and I am not skilled in burglary he comments with a chuckle. Unless you have another idea lets see what the potion can do
OOC:
If Vienne is ok with it Garic will go ahead and apply the potion to the area around the lock or the opposite side of any perceived hinges. Basically wherever it looks like will be most advantageous to creating a passage in or just ruining the door so it can be opened
Dec 27, 2023 12:58 pm
Vienne thought for a moment, before nodded. "We might as well, I'm not skilled in burglary either. I probably know as much about locks as you do. Hopefully it works."
OOC:
sorry! I thought I'd replied to this, but apparently not and I also didn't remark it as unread.
Dec 27, 2023 11:53 pm
Garic applies the Potion of Flabbiness to the area around the lock. After a few seconds the door softens and he is able to easily pull the lock and bolt back. With the bolt no longer sticking inside the door frame you can easily swing open the door. Luckily there seems to be no trap or magic on the door.

Garic and Vienne step into a huge domed cavern. The floor is littered with skeletons all in some kind of armor. The walls are chiseled smooth and decorated with runes and depictions of historic events.
But the centerpiece of the cavern is a huge red crystal in the shape of a hexagonal bipyramide hanging about halfway down from the ceiling 30ft/10m above you. Six massive iron chains run from fixtures in the ceiling to an iron ring that is holding the crystal. While there is no light source in the cavern the crystal pulses with dim red light that is bright enough to illuminate the cavern. If you watch carefully you think you can see a ghostly white figure swirling around in the crystal.

Just as you admire the scenery four of the skeletons on the floor rise up, with rusty spears in their hands and you hear a whispering voice from the crystal.
Whooooo dares to disturb my chamber? Are you with the empire of Nezhulft? Then swear fealty...
Jan 1, 2024 10:10 pm
Well, she had to assume that crystal was the important one. But it also seemed to be plenty guarded, unless Vienne was wrong and these weren't magical skeletons. Maybe it was a mix of undead guards and dead intruders? She jumped when the four stood up, but tried to see if she could figure out anything that maybe linked their armor. Might help figure out how safe the room was, in general. "Um, what happens if we don't?"

Vienne meanwhile throws her chakrams at the next chain but due to the stinging pain from her wounds she can't concentrate properly and misses.

All of Garic's attacks miss. Is this the emporer's magic at work? Vienne sends out Akhi in order to distract the skeletons.
You will serve! Kneel! you hear the emporer's voice in your head.
A beam of green light shoots out of the crystal and hits Garic. Ghostly, green chains sprout from the ground and wrap around Garic's wrists.
They pull him down so that he is forced to kneel on the ground, unable to move his arms

Akhi meanwhile is able to distract one of the skeletons that attack Vienne. It swings its sword at the familiar but misses.

Vienne's chakrams fly again and this time at least one of her weapons hits true and severs another chain. The crystal once again slightly tilts to its side. The remaining chains stay strong but produce a screeching sound under the increased load.

Garic struggles to release himself from the ghostly chains. His first attempt fails but after he heals himself he produces enough strength in order to break the bond and is able to act again.

You want to defy me? You will be the ones who serve me, either in life or death. I don't care. Mazarena, attack! you hear the voice of the emporer in your head

The woman you saw when you entered the castle bursts through the door you entered the cavern through. She has a staff in her hands with a glowing purple orb at its top. A purple projectile erupts from the orb and targets Garic.

The other skeletons meanwhile continue their attack.

Garic can easily duck his way out of the attack and at the same time he can avoid the attack by his axe wielding enemy. The purple projectile hits the cave wall and explodes into a cloud of lightning.

Garic's firebolts smash the remaining three chains holding the crystal. You hear a loud ringing sound and both of your bodies are peppered with the debris of the chains, which doesn't harm you but hurts anyway. But there isn't much time to ponder being hurt because the crystal crashes down onto the floor, exploding into millions of red fragments littering the whole cave. A white mist rushes out from the debris and fills the cave.
You get visions in front of your eyes, rapidly flashing up and then disappearing again.
You, commanding an army
You, holding a giant green orb just with the power of your mind
You, standing in front of a king who's kneeling down before you.
You, overseeing the construction of this very castle
You, transferring part of you into the crystal
You, fleeing on horseback after you lost the deciding battle
You, entombing yourself in the crystal, with your heart full of vengeance
You, seeing a lone fey adventurer, entering the castle, looking for guidance
You, filling her heart with the lust for greatness
You, getting defeated by those pesky two adventurers who a are too "good" for their own good
You, seeing a last chance...

The visions cease... the cave isn't lit anymore by the crystal. It's dark except for a ghostly figure limping towards the exit.

It's the empress but she's... different. She's glowing in a strange purple light. She is slowly limping towards the exit but it seems as if she is fighting to keep control of her body, twitching on every step. Nevertheless she is slowly making her way towards the exit, out of the cave

Well you have chosen. Prepare to live the rest of your pity and short life in this castle that only stood as long as I wanted it to... she says with a voice that's clearly not her own

Vienne can feel the spirit lift its grip from her, vanishing into thin air. The silver glow is gone from the empress, who lies down still, you don't know whether she's unconscious or dead.
But you don't have time to check.

While the walls crumble around you, you work your magic and despite the adverse circumstances you are able to succeed
Vienne manages to generate a bit of lift under the empress. Garic's spell can't wake her up but she jolts upright a bit and seems to be able to help you carrying her by moving her legs a bit as you drag her along.
You can't expect more under these circumstances and so you press on.
You reach the stairs leading up, scale them while the castle around you is increasingly shaken.
More than once you stumble and nearly slip down but at last you reach the end of the stairway and rush through the hallways towards the exit.
You think you can see blue ghostly figures at the corner of your view but you don't have time to look. Bricks dislodge themself from the walls and rain down on the ground.
You reach the main hall through which you entered the castle, the doors are open and you dash to the exit.

With the last bit of strength you can muster, you manage to escape and run down the way you came from. Cold air rushes into your face. It's stormy and snowy. After you are a safe distance from the castle you turn around. Blue swirls circle the fortress, you hear the sound of crumbling stone, and from one moment to the other the castle collapses into itself and a deafening silence spreads.
OOC:
Is there anything else your characters want to do?
If not I'd write an epilogue.
If you want to continue adventuring I'd be open for that otherwise this would conclude our foray into the world of Tiny Dungeon

After this ordeal, the hasty flight through the caves and castle and witnessing the destruction of the castle you have a strange feeling... peace
You obviously destroyed something evil here and you can feel how the world became a slightly better place by your deeds. Even though it's cold and windy you somehow can't suppress a smile. This must be how heroes feel.
After basking in this feeling a bit you start to feel the cold and you make your way back.
The troll shaman you encountered thanks you for freeing his people from the empress and after telling them what happened in the castle the shaman agrees to care for the empress until she's better.
On your way back down the mountain you sometimes spot trolls but the seem to be scared of you, only occasionally peeking around rocks and hiding when you turn to them.
At the foot of the mountain you encounter a fey trading delegation haggling with some of the frogpeople you encountered. The frogpeople seem to be in disagreement on how much a bucket of snails is worth but even though the are discussing with the fey both sides stay friendly.
In the distance you spot the mage's tower you entered on your way here. Colourful sparks are shooting out of the windows. Seems liike the owner is experimenting again.
You reach Flowergrove at the evening and you take a look back at Icespire Peak. Even though it's dark no lights can be seen up there. Seems like you ended the spook.
You enter your home village and head for the community hall.
As you open the door you see your companions who turned around before you could reach the castle sitting around a table. The are playing cards, one of them seems to be learning to play the flute.
Foldrat turns around to you
Oi! You back! Did you find anything interesting up there? Sit down and tell us all about it...
