3. The Trade Way

Aug 22, 2023 12:56 pm
The party leaves Beregost around midday with the full summer sun overhead. They keep to the road on this journey, and follow the Trade Way north toward the Friendly Arm Inn.
Aug 22, 2023 12:58 pm
In a mere couple of hours they reach a stone bridge guarded by a handful of Flaming Fist mercenaries. As usual, they're keeping a sharp lookout for any Amnish spies, and ask the party several questions.

"Where are you headed?"

"Where have you come from? Beregost? And before that? How far south?"
Aug 22, 2023 7:01 pm
Dieter guides his horse up to the main guard.

"We are on a urgent mission from officer Vai and need to come through this way. I appreciate your vigilance but we are on a time sensitive mission." Dieter says in a clear voice holding out the writ from officer Vai.
Aug 22, 2023 7:04 pm
The guard takes the writ and gives it a careful read, every so often looking up to glance at one member of the party or another. Finally he nods and returns the writ. "Helm speed you on your way."

The guards part and let the party cross the bridge to continue their journey.
Aug 22, 2023 7:11 pm
A couple of hours later, the road before them splits. According to the stone signposts, the road leading west is the Lion Way, toward the library-fortress of Candlekeep. Their own path continues forward along the Trade Way, toward the Friendly Arm Inn.

But they soon come across a troublesome scene. They can smell the burnt wood and flesh long before they see the wreckage.

The horses, both of them, have crossbow bolts protruding from their mangled corpses. A pair of motionless humanoid legs lie splayed out from behind the charred, overturned carriage.

And on the ground before it all, a familiar walking cane; it’s broken in twain, held together by just a few splinters.

This was Aldous’ carriage.

Dieter takes the writ back "you didn’t see us, you don’t know us" Dieter says staring him in the eye before waving the party on.

five lions says Ajantis isn’t laying face down there. Dieter thinks to himself. Dieter gallops the horse forward and slides down the saddle. He checks the cane for its hidden wand then examines the bodies.

"Form a parameter, let’s see where they took him."

if dieter finds anything he’ll bring it over to Aiwë

Stella puts a hand to her mouth in shock at the sight of the carriage, eye stars flashing a fearful, icy blue.

Her mind races. She should have found Aldous, talked to him, told him they were alright and they didn't need to leave Beregost so soon. She should have—Stella takes a deep breath and breaths out slowly. Even if the worst happened, even if he had died, death would not be the end. She had now seen three raised from the dead within the past month. Kidnapping and ransom, however...the Blacktalons or the Chill could hold him for ransom dead or alive, which would certainly raise tensions...

She nods at Dieter's words, asks Noctalia to search the trees for signs, and positions her horse to help seek for signs of conflict and travel.
OOC:
Perhaps Survival would be more apt. Stella's bonus is the same as her Perception.

Shelur's mouth is a thin line as she surveys the scene. She takes the cane from Dieter, mending it with magic as she hums a song about mourning lovers. She sticks it through her weapons belt then turns to Stella, putting herself squarely between the girl and the scene.

"He was headstrong, and was going anyway. He left too quickly, you couldn't have caught him. None of this is your fault." She holds Stella's eyes for a moment, then looks for tracks, wishing the dirt were snow.

"Snow-brained nobleman wanted to be a hero," Aiwë mutters in Orcish, along with a few other choice curses.

Rolls

Survival - (1d20+1)

(11) + 1 = 12

Dieter finds no wand within the cane.

The humanoid body is... difficult to identify. It would seem these carcasses have been exposed to the elements and wildlife for about a day. Still, Dieter's certain this corpse used to be a dwarf, and he's pretty sure he knows which one: Kagain, Beregost's vendor of guards and mercenaries. He seems to have been killed by a well-placed stab wound on his back.

The crossbow bolts sticking out of the horses are an obvious clue as to how they died, but there are other lacerations as well made by bladed weapons. Dieter is increasingly certain that these poor beasts weren't merely killed, but made to bleed for target practice. For sport. Death was not quick.

While Noctalia surveys from the sky, Stella and Aiwë uncover more details about the scene. And everything seems staged. There was no battle here, no clash of opponents. In fact, it doesn't look as though there were ever more than a handful of people present. The carriage was tipped and set aflame, with some sort of agent (likely alcohol) to ensure the fire spread. The walking cane was snapped directly in half - a highly unlikely occurrence to have happened during a time of stress.

There don't seem to be any tracks leading away from the scene; the people responsible were clever enough to try to hide them. But keen-eyed Noctalia spies where the tracks pick up about a half-mile to the northeast, in the direction of a large forest. The Wood of Sharp Teeth.

Stella draws her lips to a line at Aiwë's interception. She nods. She was still worried for Aldous, but she couldn't deny Aiwë's logic.

She closes her eyes as Noctalia surveys the scene so she can get a look over it as well, describing what she sees. She likely has the same realization about the same time as some of the others do. "The attack was...staged? But why?" Eyes still closed, a mischievous grin crosses her face, interupting her train of thought. "You might say it was a staged coach." She clears her throat and tries to wipe the smile off her face. Focus, girl.

Her demeanor becomes sullener when she's told how the horses were treated, not to mention the dead Beregost mercenary.

A few minutes later, Noctalia returns. "She found a trail! That way." Stella points toward the Wood of Sharp Teeth. She steers her horse in that direction and starts it moving before anyone even agrees on performing a rescue mission.

"STOP!" Dieter commands he couldn’t have her running off "we are going to save him but we need a plan first"

Dieter gives Aiwë the look. Dieter has never seen Stella like this and that was a bad sign. He leans over to Aiwë "you need to watch her, she’s going to do something rash. I don’t know what it is but when she does it’ll get us killed Dieter whispers

"his wand was gone but I don’t know if he kept it hidden on purpose. He was pretty quick to pull it out in the Inn so there’s a chance the bandits knew it was there. With hope he has it stashed on his person. Dieter says addressing the group.

"I’d like to point out our good friend Ajantis is not with the dead. This is highly incriminating. We have a few options ahead of us and potential issues we need to take into account. The main being that Ajantis if he is with these abductors is waiting for us and is aware of our abilities. Luckily for us he is not aware of our typical fighting style but he did stand back and watched us. If I was him I would have been watching very closely. I propose we go in quiet. " Dieter continues

"Stella, how high can your bird fly, Can you see clearly when it is at its highest? Dieter asks "we can know their exact location without them seeing it. We can encircle them and close the trap hard and fast. I would not be opposed to killing them while they slept, these people fight dirty and deserve no quarter" dieter says referencing the current ambush.

"Hold, sister-girl!" Aiwë calls in unison with Dieter. "That's exactly what Aldous did!"

She frowns at Dieter. "You mean like holding ground against ogres and thinking the Fists were after us? I've got it, don't worry."
Aug 22, 2023 11:02 pm
"Yes." Dieter replies. "In my defense I killed the ogre and someone was after us. I was right about getting attacked just not about who but that’s all behind us. Yes Aiwë.

Stella flinches at Dieter's command and Aiwë's warning. She stops her horse then reluctantly turns back towards them.

She blushes and a few eyestars turn pink and indigo. It seemed Dieter wasn't the only one prone to over-zealotry, she realizes. Was her newfound confidence more of a danger than a strength?

"Ah, I can only share senses and thoughts when she's within about hundred feet." she explains. "She can fly further than that from me and circle back to report, but Ajantis would recognize her if he is on their side..." She purses her lips in thought. "'Twould take a small bit out of me, but I can summon a different bird if we need...I can also shroud us as dampen our sounds during our approach like I did briefly at the gnoll castle."

"I am sorry I raised my voice Stella, would you forgive me?" Dieter apologizes
Aug 22, 2023 11:37 pm
Stella nods to Dieter then looks off to the side towards nothing in particular. "It...was merited," she admits. She wanted to apologize about her glares last night, but felt the gaze of all the other party members on her. Later is fine, she tells herself.

Ida surveys the scene with pity, she hated the callousness of people who prematurely and intentionally took the life of other people without righteous judgment. She watches the group react to the scene in front of them and also decides to dismount the horse. She turns "There should be enough of the facial structure to speak with dead, but it's not a guarantee with the state this body is in"

"that’s a good Idea Ida but I think even he doesn’t know who killed him. He was probably caught by suprise like the others…..wait wasn’t Aldeous’ wand a fire wand?"
Aug 22, 2023 11:44 pm
Stella looks at Ida and her eyes brighten slightly. She had somehow forgotten Ida had such talents! She had forgotten Ida was there, if she were honest. Quiet yet abrasive, but also caring.

"Maybe he heard something as he died?" she suggests.

Stella shakes her head. "Acid. And Magic Missile." She frowns. "It's unusual for a mundane wand to have spells of multiple kinds of evocation like that, so it's possible it's a regular spell focus. I didn't talk to him much about his exact level of talent."
