[Gameplay] 5. Best Left Buried

Sep 5, 2023 12:04 am
Once you’ve had time to recuperate, Ptemenib arranges another meeting with Sebti the Crocodile and Nakht Shepses to guide your initial search before you venture into the necropolis.

At the Grand Mausoleum, the three priests meet with you once more.

Sebti the Crocodile
Sebti the Crocodile is the most keen to see mortal investigators resolve the crisis, and agrees to let you keep any riches you might find in the necropolis, though she urges you to remember the three rules of your earlier explorations in the necropolis.

When you agree, she continues, "I must entrust you with one of our greatest secrets. When the necropolis was first walled off nearly 1,800 years ago, more than a dozen necromantic detectors called elegiac compasses were concealed inside. These devices can sense large sources of necromantic energy, and church inquisitors have used them to track and subdue fell influences in the necropolis. As of 30 years ago, the last time they were used, five elegiac compasses remained functional and could possibly be used to triangulate the source of the undead uprising. I don’t know whether all of the elegiac compasses are still operational, but I am providing you with a map to their locations." She gives you a rough map.

Nakht Shepses
"I suspect that a cult of atheist lamias called the Amushet might be behind the undead uprising, no doubt agitated by the church’s ill-advised exploration program. The lamias know bizarre magics and have been known to take paramours from the city’s populace, releasing them only after blinding them and driving them insane. The Amushet inhabit the Cenotaph of the Cynic in the necropolis, treating it as their personal playground." He indicates on the map where that is.

Ptemenib
In his investigations of Wati’s grave-robbing gangs, Ptemenib regularly visits the necropolis, and has made contact with a clan of dark folk called the Xotl who dwell beneath Vizier’s Hill. Ptemenib suggests, "Seek out the Xotl leader, named Unwrapped Harmony, in the old villa of the Asetiti family. Among the less dangerous of the necropolis’s denizens, the dark folk are tolerated by the church, and I believe they could have information about the outbreak of undeath in the city." He sketches a quick map showing the villa’s location.

Ptemenib also suggests, "The Silver Chain likely had ways to enter the necropolis unnoticed, and any contacts or captives you have from your dealings with the gang might be able to tell you of such a means of bypassing the armies of ghouls and zombies besieging the necropolis’s gates."

To help you in your task, Sebti provides you with a lesser ectoplasmic metamagic rod from the Grand Mausoleum’s treasury.

Khadi is silent as she looks over the map trying to absorb all the information being given. Of course it wasn't going to be as simple as entering the Necropolis and there was the source, but it was all a little overwhelming as the reality of what they were going to hit her. Not that she could show it outwardly while Nakht was in the room. Her friend were strong, they would keep them all safe while she kept them standing up right. A simple enough plan, what could go wrong.

'Friend's always sound good she points to where Ptemnebib did. [b] If we make our way here while going to any of these compasses on the way?' She looks to her companions for their thoughts.
Sep 8, 2023 8:00 am
Tabat nods. "We will go see this Xotl leader and seek out any of the elegiac compasses you marked on the map. If found, what should we do with them? Are they similar in size to normal compasses? It sounds as though we may need to activate them within the necropolis itself - is there anything we should know about how to activate them?"
Sep 12, 2023 2:50 am
Sebti the Crocodile
"They are large and somewhat fragile, or at least delicate. As big as a sarcophagus. Once you find one, then activate it and it would indicate the direction to the largest source of necromantic energy. Find two and you'll pinpoint the area by where those lines cross."
Sep 12, 2023 2:59 am
"Excellent. Thank you, Your Holiness. We'll set to work right away."

The elegiac compasses are at: G,K,L,M,O. The Xotl are at Vizier's Hill, Area I.

Normally, entering Wati’s necropolis is a relatively simple matter. Two large gates provide access to the city of the dead, and provided they have the permission of the priests of the Grand Mausoleum, mourners and visitors generally have free access to the necropolis during daylight hours. A few undead have always roamed the necropolis, but generally keep a healthy distance from the gates and the ever-watchful eyes of Pharasmins. Following the necromantic pulse, the gates have been sealed to keep the small army of ghouls, skeletons, and zombies now swarming each gate from entering the living half of the city.

There are three ways to enter the dead city: find and use the purported smuggler tunnels, climb the wall, or go through the gate and fight the assembled horde.
Sep 15, 2023 5:50 am
OOC:
Which marker is the dark folk?
While I am all for fighting undead I don't think the front entrance is a good idea right now. Khadi muses as they discuss ways in.

'This compass is near a wall.. We could try and get some rope and go over near there... You might need to help me. Or we look for some silver chain to see if they know about tunnels .
OOC:
She is indicating to L on the map.
Sep 15, 2023 7:20 am
"It's a good plan, Khadi. Over the wall there, and if we're quiet about it, we shouldn't draw any attention. On the note of the Silver Chain, the two men that surrendered to us - I wonder if they would know a way inside as an alternative. Depending on where it leads, it could be a safer alternative, but who's to say where we might find them again? They did not mention where they were going, did they?"
Sep 15, 2023 4:50 pm
Updated the map above - the Xotl are at Area I.

The walls are steep and relatively smooth. Climbing the wall will require 4 DC 20 climb checks, 2 checks only if you start from the roof of an adjoining building, plus 2 more DC 20 checks to climb down the other side. Of course, once one person has gone up, ropes can make the effort easier for those following.

As to the Silver Chain, you kind of sent them off to 'stop selling death sticks and to go home and rethink their lives'. Finding them would require some sleuthing (a DC 20 Knowledge Local check).
Sep 15, 2023 7:55 pm
"I'll volunteer to go up and over," Iseret says. "Although, I may know where to find our friends in the Silver Chain."

Tabat prefers the quiet way via the Silver Chain, but doesn't have knowledge (local). Might he be able to use Diplomacy for Gather Information by spending a little time canvassing, if we can spare the time? Just in case, adding a roll below. Otherwise, he supports the effor to have Iseret climb and get us inside. Perhaps we should purchase climbing gear?

OOC:
Works for me.
You recall the man you'd spoken to at length, and after speaking with some of the local vocabulary, find him at an inn that Silver Chain had been known to frequent.

He's grateful to you, glad to see you again, and for the price of a pitcher of beer, tells you where you can find the smuggler tunnels they used under the wall.

You can access through the gang’s now-abandoned brickworks headquarters that you investigated. From the master's chamber, where you fought Ekram Iffek, there's is a secret door in the southeastern wall that you missed that opens into a swampy network of unused tunnels that eventually leads into the dried-up and bricked-over canals of the necropolis known as the Dry Veins.

The tunnels will exit into the necropolis close to one of the Pharasmins’ elegiac compasses (area G).
Sep 20, 2023 3:17 am
Tabat thanks the man, buys him another round and claps him on the back before leaving to rejoin the others. It took nearly 4 hours to find the information, but it seemed good.

"Sorry I was gone so long," he says upon returning to the others, "but I got a lead on the tunnels." He explains who he found and what he learned.

"Now, we can still climb the wall, if you both think it presents less danger. There could be dangers in the tunnels below the necropolis just as well."

'Tunnels sound good... I was nit looking forward to getting over that wall.' Khadi jokingly lifts and arm as she speaks showing the lack of muscle. 'You two were probably going to have to pull me up.'
Sep 21, 2023 2:50 am
"I feel that the tunnels may be a better choice. Who knows? We may find that luck is with us and they are not guarded."
Sep 21, 2023 10:24 pm
With your shopping done, and the plan set before you, you leave early in the morning, heading for the brickworks where you rooted out the Silver Chain.

You find the secret door, a tough feat even knowing where to look, and then find a tunnel that leads to the north. Following that you cross over into the dead half of the city.

A portion of the tunnels' stonework has collapsed here, exposing the winding crypts beneath to the harsh sky above. Shallow alcoves line each wall, stacked high with artfully arranged human bones and skulls. In the center of this subterranean chamber, a jumble of bronze springs and copper plates lies tangled in a pile of fallen stone.
Sep 22, 2023 2:05 am
Iseret's first thought is an obvious trap. but that seems too obvious. She approaches the pile carefully, being certain not to touch anything.
Sep 22, 2023 3:58 am
"Perhaps what we are seeing are the underpinnings of a trap, something rigged to make the ground above us give way?" Tabat remains observant but follows behind Iseret as she checks things out more closely.
Sep 22, 2023 10:51 pm
Jaware looks at it from behind where he normally keeps watch, and says, "I think that's the remains of the compass we came to find." He points at the springs. "That's what they described, anyway. I think the roof collapsed and crushed it."
Sep 23, 2023 12:44 am
Tabat nods and pulls out the map they were given. "Hmm. You're right, I think. Should we try to maneuver east, then? We can try to find the next two (K and L) along the way before seeking out these Xotl."
Sep 30, 2023 4:09 am
Tabat tries to find the way, per the suggestion he made, unless someone stops him with another plan or option.
Oct 1, 2023 3:04 pm
Suspecting a nest of snakes lives in the wreckage you exit the crypt, carefully climbing out of the collapse.

You're on the streets of the necropolis. Wary of the event that seems to have risen mass numbers of dead throughout the Half Dead City of Wati, you have a few ways to go.

The most straightforward way is to follow the walls to area L, then probably up and go well around the plaza near the gate (there are dozens if not more undead near the gate), to area K, then onward to the Xotl at area I.

With this plan in mind you concentrate on first examining the next elegiac compass closest to you. You encounter some minor undead along the route but find them no test of your resources.

The Shiny Bubble

This former glassblower’s shop was repurposed to serve as a humble family mausoleum, as well as the location of one of the elegiac compasses. Examining the interior, the Shiny Bauble has been looted of its choicest bits of glasswork and jewelry.

The elegiac compass on the shop’s roof is in surprisingly good condition despite its age. However, a significant component of the device—its copper-wrapped quartz core—has recently been removed.

Khadi spots tracks leaving from the device, tracking the culprit is easy in the loose, dry sand covering the rooftop, a single creature to a large sinkhole behind the shop. She also identifies the tracks as those of a creature with the dragon type.

' So... Don't look at me like I'm crazy but.. These may be a dragons. I mean.. It would make sense why the shiny thing is what is missing. '
Oct 1, 2023 11:54 pm
"A dragon? But there is no way that a dragon could get in here, is there?"
Oct 2, 2023 12:28 am
OOC:
Its tracks indicate sonething like size medium, just to provide scale.
Jaware, checks his arrows. "A dragon. Some kind of zombie dragon maybe?"
Oct 2, 2023 3:46 am
"Whatever it is, we will ask it to give us the piece we need and hope that it complies," Tabat says. He takes a moment once they are in the streets of the Necropolis to summon his mount.

"My friends, this is Andromeda. She has been gifted to me, by Horus himself - if you would believe it. Came to me in a dream, then when I awoke there he was." The idea that this dromedary might be of a divine nature might be obscene, but it materializing out of thin air might lend it some credibility. He climbs atop her and pats her neck.

"Ready to follow your lead, Khadi."
OOC:
We're back at full health as we head into this place, right?

Khadi looks the camel up and down before looking at her amulet. 'Feel like giving me a camel Khepri? No?'l I need to blast more undead first?' She laughs before waving everyone to follow her as she starts following the tracks.

Khadi will lead the group to the sinkhole, but pauses. 'I don't think I should be the one going down there first. Perhaps someone with a couple more layers. Unless you are too comfy aboard your new ride?' She looks to Tabat in his armour.

'If there are more tracks I' ll point them out. '

If Tabat does go down she'll hop down after him.

Iseret falls in with the rest, seeking the safety of the middle of the party.
Oct 3, 2023 2:25 am
The sinkhole behind the Shiny Bauble drops 50 feet into a large subterranean fissure beneath the necropolis. How might you descend, and what precautions do you take?
Oct 4, 2023 6:12 am
Tabat dismounts Andromeda and goes to look into the sinkhole. "I don't like the look of this, but I'll volunteer to go down first. I have strong rope - if you tie it off I should be able to lower myself carefully enough to the bottom safely." Tabat loosens his pack and pulls a length of rope and a sunrod free, looking to the others for affirmation of his suggestion.
Oct 4, 2023 6:31 am
'Just don't fall. If you fall I'll have to go down to heal you, and I will definitely fall.' Khadi jokes as she looks for a place to fix the rope.

'Though if there is a dragon we should probably all go down.. You first, Aware lower me on the rope after then he and Iseret climb down?'

You affix the rope to Andromeda and lower Tabat down, the dromedary snorting with displeasure at the effort.

There, you see a dragon.

She's gathered a nice hoard, full of pretty baubles and shiny trinkets from the surrounding tombs. It is all displayed artfully, and she lies on a bed of silken sheets and stolen coin.

As Tabat lowets himself in, she rears up and demands, "Who dares sully my house?"

https://i.imgur.com/0EKvGlH.png
Oct 5, 2023 4:59 pm
With his lit sunrod, Tabat reaches the bottom. He gives the rope two quick tugs, the signal agreed upon that would tell the others he was alive and well, then a third upon seeing the dragon - the agreed upon signal for danger.

He steps forward, weapons still sheathed and strapped. "I am Tabat Menese, Paladin of Horus. I hope you will find my presence as unsullied as could be, as I walk a path of the divine. I had hoped we could talk."
Oct 6, 2023 12:55 am
OOC:
This will require a DC 30 Diplomacy check -- dragons are notoriously uncooperative when facing hoard looters.
Oct 6, 2023 1:23 am
Tabat smiles and reads the dragon's aura while hoping for some sort of positive outcome to this decidedly dangerous situation.
OOC:
Or a CRIT SUCCESS!?!?!

You might be able to make her an offer, she may or may not listen, but time is running out.

"Listen," Tabat says, thinking on Jaware's words, "we are not your enemies and we do not plan to steal from you. A trade, perhaps, at most. I can sense you are no evil creature - you may not know, there is great evil at works in the city: the dead roam, killing many. We seek to locate the source of this evil and expel it - certainly you would prefer the living dead quelled before they infest your home as well?" He holds his hands out to show they are empty and takes a breath, hoping to appeal to the famed pride of dragon-kind, and kneels. "Please, we beg your help. You may be the only one that can tip the odds in our favor. Would you at least hear a proposal?"
Oct 6, 2023 2:46 pm
The dragon narrows her eyes, but you seer the glimmer of treasure lust bloom, along with a self confidence that she can best you in any negotiation.

"Trade? What kind of trade? I like gems and jewels and coin and pretty things."

My assumption was only Tabat went down, although sneaky Iseret made it too. If you want to slide down the rope at this point, however, that's fine with me. Easier when you're all together.

Jaware will stay up top to guard the way out.
Oct 10, 2023 5:01 pm
Tabat carefully, slowly removes his pack and rummages inside before pulling forth the gold funerary mask they had found previously. "Here, Spectacular One. In exchange for a part to this machine we seek. The best part: this thing we seek, we need only replace to where you found it and use its power to remove this evil presence from your home. Then, you can simply return and take the part back for you collection. Not only will be enriched materially, but also we will be doing something worthy and good for your home and the homes of all this in Wati."
OOC:
Hope you don't mind Tabat putting that up for offer - happy to edit if you prefer not.
Oct 10, 2023 10:51 pm
"Oh, I love gems and jewels, but not so much for gold. That doesn't look like it's worth very much. No, if you want my pretty bauble, then I want at least .... 1,500 gold pieces of shiny."
OOC:
I'm not very good at RPing bartering, but DC 18 Diplomacy check and you can knock that down to 1,000 gp, or 900gp worth of gems/jewels, if you have them.
Oct 11, 2023 2:27 am

Not for this. We are not thieves, or murderers - we have no desire to relieve you of this treasure. Yet surely, someone so resplendent as yourself could temporarily part ways with something for only a short while? You could follow us to observe us leaving it in the device and leaving.

She eyes you with a sparkling glint. "You have magic. Perhaps you would trade something else of value?"
Oct 12, 2023 4:54 pm
As the others speak Khadi is carefully makes her way down the rope, catching the tale e d of the conversation as she finally makes it to the ground.
Oct 12, 2023 7:12 pm
Tabat nods and rummages through the haversack, pulling out an assortment of gems and trinkets, looking up to the dragon to try and gauge its reaction. Once he feels the dragon may be satisfied, he stops, closes the bag and looks up expectantly - a small pile of shiny baubles and stones on the ground before him.
OOC:

"I never did ask your name, great one. I am Tabat Menes, Paladin of Horus. I would care to know your name, if you would honor me with it," Tabat asks while offering the pile of gems and jewelry.
Oct 24, 2023 8:37 pm
OOC:
OMG I missed your offer of the jewels.
She nods at the respect. "I am Shardizhad. I am pleased to do business with you. If you have more of those pretty gems and jewels, I'd be happy to take them from you at 10% more than market price in gold. Please do come back, adventurers. "
Oct 25, 2023 7:42 am
"That is gracious of you, Shardizhad," he says, "And thank you for the trade. I for one will make a point to save any beautiful gems we come across for you." He smiles and bows again, deeply and respectfully. "Now, if we may - I'll take the item we came for and we will do what we can to bring peace to the town, and to this necropolis. Thank you again."
Oct 27, 2023 7:12 pm
Having purchased the mechanical components from the friendly but treasure hungry crystal dragon, you return to the shop where the rest of the compass lies.

You can attempt to repair the device, which is large and delicate and can’t be moved from the Shiny Bauble without several weeks’ work. The elegiac compass is too complex and powerful (CL 12th) for you to repair magically with spells such as make whole, so you must attempt to fix the device manually. Doing so requires 2 hours of work and a successful DC 15 Craft (clockwork) or (jewelry) check, or a successful DC 20 Spellcraft check.
Oct 27, 2023 7:25 pm
Tabat sighs while standing over the complicated machinery. "Hells, I talked the dragon into parting ways with this thing, but I realize I have no clue what to do from here."
OOC:
Tabat is no good at any of those things lol
Oct 27, 2023 7:31 pm
'..Okay I have no idea where to start with this.' Khadi looks at the device uncertain. 'I can ask Khepri to bless some who can though, guide their hands as he does the workers.'
OOC:
Think it it may be Jaware :p. If allow Khadi can cast guidance, but understadnd it it won't work for such a longer check.

Once repaired, the elegiac compass points a straight line through the necropolis, but without other compasses to triangulate the signal, you only know that the source of the ka pulse lies somewhere along that vector.

You mark the direction on your map. It draws a line from your location L through M, N, O and P.

"So, we need to go here," Iseret suggests, pointing at M.
Oct 29, 2023 2:57 am
OOC:
Correct me if I'm wrong - if we know this compass we just used passes through P, M, O, and N - and O and M are other compasses, doesn't that just leave P and N as the potential sources of necromantic energy? Maybe I'm not visualizing things right.
Oct 29, 2023 3:57 am
OOC:
That's a little metagaming, but yes. You know the compass points in that direction and in the fiction could be in a hundred locations along that line, maybe more. Not all of the possible ones are marked with giant letter, wink wink.
Oct 29, 2023 4:50 am
OOC:
That's fair :D Stepping away from the meta-aspect, the points we DO know about are the ones marked as compass locations. Tabat would vote we go continue to the Xotl to seek their assistance and check on the compass at point 'K' along the way. Hopefully the compass there would intersect at a meaningful place along the first line.
Oct 29, 2023 5:17 am
OOC:
yeah that's what I was thinking to get the intersect. Suppose in character we could walk along the line but we won't know what we are looking for.

Nov 7, 2023 6:18 pm
OOC:
I still have time to post each day and would also like to keep it moving. Give me a direction and I'll update. However, @Whtknt mentioned something about a two week camping trip, so he might be offline a bit.

I think it was point K, as we head towards the Xotl?
Nov 7, 2023 7:16 pm
You skirt wide of the gates, knowing that a horde of undead had been gathering there, seeking to access the living side of Wati.

Location K

A morass of mud, mold, and crumbling stonework fills this old bathhouse’s humid interior. According to Sebti’s map, one of the Pharasmins’ elegiac compasses was placed in the ruins of this unassuming middle-class bathhouse called the Marid’s Caress.
Nov 8, 2023 7:13 am
OOC:
Okay! I certainly won't complain :D
"This place has seen much better days," Tabat says, leading Andromeda inside the bath house and looking around. "I don't see any signs of the compass immediately inside, perhaps there is a basement?"
Nov 9, 2023 2:19 am
You examine it and after sleuthing you realize that after centuries of neglect, the bathhouse’s plumbing failed, collapsing one wall onto the compass and damaging it beyond repair. The windblown sand, collapsed rock, and constant leaks have since transformed the Marid’s Caress into an indoor swamp.

Jaware says, "There's magic over here." Digging through mud, he finds a lens of detection.

'Seems like the pharasmin' s are going to need to check all the compasses when this is over. ' Khadi almost wanted to suggest they do it, but they had a more important goal.

So the Xotl then? Perhaps they are aware of one that still works?

With only this small magic to reward your efforts you leave the bathhouse and head farther east to the Viziers Hill, and rumours of the Xotl.

On the west side of the hill sits an estate, and you sense this is where you are headed. The ground doesn't have that settled dust look.

Entering the estate grounds, you are quickly approached by three individuals. These tall humanoids' pale brows and black, soulless eyes are all that can be seen above black scarves wrapped around their faces. Their black clothing and leather armor are spotless, and they each sport a pair of short swords at their waists.

They appear to be nervous and one asks in a halting voice, "What... do you want here?"
Nov 11, 2023 10:06 am
"We have come seeking the Xotl people. We heard they may be counted upon for aid, should it be needed. I am hopeful we have found them."

Tabat keeps his hand well away from his weapons, keeping them stowed and displaying no sign of apprehension or potential danger to the people.
Nov 11, 2023 3:11 pm
Khadi nods in agreement, similarly standing relaxed and non-threating. 'Something awful is spreading across Waiti, with the undead rising. We can offer our own aid in response if you need it.'
Nov 11, 2023 5:55 pm
They look nervously at the armed group, but then gesture that you stay, and one of the creepers runs back to the house for instructions.

For the next while, while waiting for direction, the Xotl guards attempt to make awkward conversation that only shows how little they understand. "That sun sure is shining today." or "Flying birds have got to be tasty." or "What's that pharoah up to these days?" Unfortunately, they either know little or are prepared to say nothing about anything of interest.

Half an hour later... the third guard comes back, and together you all enter the house. "Unwrapped Harmony will meet with you now."

Inside you find her, and are left alone with the matriarch and two handmaidens. She is stiff and possibly unfriendly, suspicious even. She doesn't speak right away, but when she does it is slow and careful.

Unwrapped Harmony
"I am Unwrapped Harmony. Why have you come?"
Nov 11, 2023 6:19 pm
Khadi will try and engage in the small talk, as awkward as it may be to try and help the guard relax.

As they are lead in she bows her head to Unwrapped Harmony. 'I apologise for us showing up unannounced. We are from the other side of Wati. Many undead have risen on both sides. Many are trying to breach the walls of the necropolis. I don't know if it has also affected your people?'

We are searching for the source of the necromantic energy that caused it. We were wondering if you people had seen anything, or could offer any assistance, especially if the undead are threatening you as well. I would imagine the necropolis has also become for dangerous.'

"You come as strangers, and we are rarely well treated by such. Still, if you will do us a favour, I will tell you everything you wish to know, at least as much as I know of such things."

She offers you some water, it's foetid but potable, taken from disused wells.

"Periodically, small groups splinter off from our community, usually to pursue their own dissenting ideas. My own apprentice, Gaunt Cadaver recently lead a few followers away to form his own clan. We are fascinated with your corpses, for we don't leave our shells behind. Mummification is a ritual that I've long wondered about. Gaunt Cadaver, however, sought to use necromancy to understand the mysteries of mummies. I will not tolerate this blasphemy, this desecration, but we lack the means to root him out ourselves. Go to the estate on the other side of the hill, and stop my apprentice's profane experiments. Will you do this, adventurers? Bring back proof of his death, he has a magic stone he swallowed, and I'll be at your service. Further, I'll reward you for any of my people you bring back to me alive."
Nov 12, 2023 5:25 am
"Ending such dark magic would not only be a reasonable cost for your knowledge and services, but - and I hope I speak proper for my companions as well - also our duty. I, for one, would not stand to allow such work continue. Are you certain, however, that your apprentice is beyond saving, that he might be brought back to you alive?"
Nov 12, 2023 12:21 pm
As Tabat says, I have made it my duty to fight necromancy and undead. I will gladly seek him out to put and end to this. .'

"You're kind to think so, but he's utterly corrupted. Be safe, good people, and end this abomination before his madness spreads death throughout our community."
Nov 14, 2023 6:16 am
"Right," Tabat says, saddened by this, "We will right these wrongs and return to you with proof of the deed." He purposely doesn't commit to bringing back the proof that was asked for as he doesn't relish the idea of retrieving it.

A cracked fountain in the center of this dried, open courtyard occasionally.sputters a thick gout of water and silt. Columns support a roof covering a tiled walkway around the perimeter of the courtyard. Decorative double doors to the north and south provide access to the villa’s interior.

Jaware shoots the necromancer! For 15 damage

Tabat tries to throw his shield up to minimize the impact of corpse shrapnel.

As the room goes dark, both he and Andromeda's vision goes grey - they can still make out their foe.

Tabat closes on the necromancer swiftly, tossing the spear to the ground and pulling his flail. He swings the weapon at the enemy's feet, hoping to trip him up and knock him to the ground.

If successful, he shouts to the others, "Quick, he's down - let's take the advantage!"

Andromeda sidles up next to Tabat and nips at the enemy.

There were three zombie explosions. I'm fine with rolling for them individually (2, 5, and 1 damage) or collectively (max 8 damage). The damage type is negative energy.

CMD is 18, so he's knocked prone. AC 18 (before prone), so Andromeda misses.

Ah ok, ty for the clarification. Simpler to just do the collective damage roll, I think. Tabat and Andromeda each take -4hp from the explosion.

Since the save was a Will save, I am assuming that Iseret's Evasion ability does not apply?
Dec 4, 2023 4:05 am
OOC:
I think that's right.

At 2nd level and higher, a rogue can avoid even magical and unusual attacks with great agility. If she makes a successful Reflex saving throw against an attack that normally deals half damage on a successful save, she instead takes no damage. Evasion can be used only if the rogue is wearing light armor or no armor. A helpless rogue does not gain the benefit of evasion.

The woman awakes with a start, and with assistance sits up. "Thank you, strangers. You saved me from a fate worse than death. He snatched me from outside, and then..." She sniffs, overwrought with what almost happened.

Treasure: Gaunt Cadaver’s followers have collected most of the estate’s most valuable grave goods in the surgery, consisting of a bolt of Qadiran silk (worth 400 gp), a 3-pound jar of giant bee royal jelly worth 300 gp, 20 ivory servant statuettes called ushabti (worth 15 gp each), a pair of gold and onyx earrings (worth 100 gp) and matching necklace (worth 250 gp), a lapis lazuli bracelet (worth 50 gp), 240 gp, 345 sp, and 75 cp.

In addition, Gaunt Cadaver himself had a scroll of speak with dead, black smear poison (3 doses), a masterwork buckler, kukri, healer’s kit, and surgeon’s tools.

After the surgery, (not entirely dissimilar to initial part of the mummification process if that helps), Khadi retrireves Gaunt Cadaver’s magical steadfast gut-stone. It is the "magic stone" required by Unwrapped Harmony as proof of her apprentice’s death.

Dec 14, 2023 9:11 am
Tabat nods his head in respect. "First, I humbly request that you consider collecting your people's bodies and giving them a proper funeral. They may have been led astray but they deserve as much. Otherwise, I would remind you why we are here - undead have awakened in startling numbers and are attacking the city outside this Necropolis. We believe the source of these creatures lies somewhere within these walls, but are at a loss as to where we should look. Have your people seen anything out of the ordinary very recently? Strangers coming and going where they typically do not? Or have they heard any whispers of other necromancy going on?"

Unwrapped Harmony
"The dark folk know much of the recent comings and goings of adventuring bands like yours in the southern half of the necropolis. Perhaps of greater interest to you is the curious sight one of our people saw several nights ago, the same woman you rescued in fact: she saw a strange figure near an old bathhouse called the Marid’s Caress. The figure was carrying a golden mask and arguing with something in a brass cage mere hours before the necromantic pulse washed over the city. In its haste, the mysterious stranger left behind a torn scrap of parchment." Unwrapped Harmony has the parchment brought out and gives it to you.

Tabat and Khadi are both able to tell that the scrap is a star chart of the summer skies over Wati, but the incomplete piece makes it impossible to tell whether the star chart is an academic reference, a navigational chart, or a divination aid.

"Well, I think that's our next destination," Tabat says, taking the scrap star chart and putting it neatly in his belt pouch. "Thank you , Unwrapped Harmony. We will take our leave and trouble your people no more this day. Know that you have friends outside the Necropolis, should you need them."
OOC:
Let's chase that mask! I didn't see anything on the map handout for that - did the update stick? Either way, I think off to Marid's Caress as a primary direction, while also considering the next compass location (should it be along our path).
Dec 16, 2023 5:38 pm

P. OBSERVATORY OF TRUTH AND WISDOM

This house of learning and record keeping was dedicated to the Ancient Osirian deities Maat and Thoth, the goddess of celestial order and truth and god of the moon and wisdom, respectively. Here, astronomers once studied the heavens, tracking the movements of celestial bodies and supplying Wati’s various mapmakers and travelers with accurate measurements and predictions.

The Observatory of Truth and Wisdom is a simple affair, consisting of a single floor with a three-story tower in the center. The tower’s top level is exposed to the skies above, with various markings on the walls to indicate the position of the sun and stars on important dates.

The doors are open, but dust hasn't blown in, indicating that they opened very recently and weren't closed behind.

The interior of the observatory’s main floor is decorated in blue tiles and murals of major constellations and celestial events.

Dec 24, 2023 3:35 pm
When the observatory was transformed into a tomb, artisans worked subtle death motifs into the decorations, and anyone fluent in Ancient Osiriani discovers many prayers to Pharasma worked into the decorative trim.

In addition, an enormous spiral mosaic, partially obscured by a tattered tarpaulin, is built into the floor of the tower. You note this as the holy symbol of Pharasma, but Tabat can see that the observatory was dedicated to Maat and Thoth, two deities with little, if any, relation to Pharasma.

Tabat finds several star charts on the premises. Although none of those found match the scrap you received from Unwrapped Harmony, they’re of the same type and format, making it very likely that the piece the dark folk discovered came from this location.

Anyone fluent in Ancient Osiriani with even modest religious knowledge can recognize all of the common prayers and affirmations to the Lady of Graves worked into the building’s decor save the phrase, "All who live must pass through the doorway of death to face her judgment."
