Chapter 1 - Introduction

Sep 7, 2023 12:01 am
Imagine if you will the opening of a movie…

As the scene unfolds, the camera hovers above the suburban landscape. The golden rays of the sun bathe the neatly trimmed lawns and cozy houses. Children pedal their bikes down tree-lined streets, their laughter mingling with the distant hum of lawnmowers. It's a snapshot of 80s nostalgia.

"Video Killed the Radio Star" by The Buggles plays in the background.

As the camera continues its graceful descent, subtle changes come into view. Robotic lawnmowers glide silently over the verdant grass. Children's bikes are momentarily overshadowed by the passing of a majestic freighter.

Amid the backdrop of suburban scenes, a subtle distortion begins to take hold. Bona cooling towers rise like monolithic sentinels in the distance, their towering industrial forms punctuating the horizon with an otherworldliness. You see a mosaic of images that weave together innocence and innovation, nostalgia and the unknown.

As the opening sequence reaches its culmination, the music fades into silence. The focus narrows to an image of a lifeless figure lying in a field. A bird hops onto their face, moving from chin to cheek and then to forehead, as if curiously exploring. With a sudden flit, the bird takes off, and the camera's perspective widens to unveil a field teeming with hundreds of birds, their cacophonous squawks filling the air. The chilling truth becomes apparent, hints of more lifeless forms are scattered amidst the avian congregation, painting a grim tableau of the mystery and danger that lie ahead.

Let's dive into the game! It's a crisp September weekend, a few weeks into the new school year. The air carries a hint of autumn's approach, even though the days are still drenched in warm, golden sunlight.

@bowlofspinach I'll have you start the first scene for introducing Robbie and showing her in everyday life. Do you have an idea, or do you want me to give you a scene?
Sep 7, 2023 5:52 am
Robbie's alarm as always rings early. Far too early for any sensible human. Unfortunately, her family are farmers, not sensible humans, so the young teenager grumpily rolls out of bed. She opens the blinds at her bedroom window, revealing the nice view she has of her family's farm. The chickens are still asleep as the sun hasn't risen yet and only the first of the sheep have started trudging around lazily yet.
Robbie quickly changes from her pajamas into the dirty clothes laid aside for her morning round. She ties her messy hair up on top of her head, then shambles down the stairs and slips into her rubber boots.
"Morning, sweetie," her mother, Anika, greets her, sounding far too cheerful for the early morning.

"Hot chocolate," Robbie mumbles back as she opens the door of the farmhouse to head outside.

"Will be ready when you get back in," her mother confirms.

Yawning, Robbie makes her way to the small shed where their animal feed is stored. She's jealous of all her classmates who are probably still fast asleep at this hour and don't have to get up so early every morning, whether it's a schoolday or not. As she begins preparing buckets of food for the different animals, she imagines what life could have been like if her parents had any other, normal job. Like maybe one of them could be a scientist at the Loop. And the other would maybe steer the ferry to Munsö. Nothing too fancy, but then she could just be normal. No getting up early to feed the animals, no heavy, hearty meals every day so she has the energy to work alongside her dad. She sighs as she reaches the chickens, the first stop of her little round. Maybe then she could even be pretty, like Emilia.
Sep 7, 2023 2:06 pm
Robbie mechanically tends to the chickens, the cool morning air providing a brief respite from her day-to-day reality. Her hands move with practiced ease, the rhythm of farm life embedded in her muscle memory.

Just then, her father emerges from the barn, his rugged form silhouetted against the early morning light. "Lost in thought again, Robbie?"
OOC:
I’m assuming her father is also up doing chores, and this is an opportunity to see their relationship. If he’s elsewhere, let us know.

After they part ways, I’ll have you make an investigate roll while Robbie is still doing her chores (unless something in their interaction changes Robbie’s ability to notice things). This is more of a passive survey of her surroundings.
Sep 7, 2023 2:24 pm
Robbie looks up and finds her dad, also doing his morning route right now. Suddenly, she feels a bit guilty about her thoughts. She does have a pretty good life generally and her parents are both pretty cool. So what right does she have to complain?

"Hey pappa," she greets him. "Good morning." She quickly checks for eggs, taking out the two she finds before walking over to him.

He gives her a brief, one-armed hug, then makes a face. "You smell."

"You smell," Robbie shoots back with a big grin. "And I haven't showered yet."

"Then you better be quick on your round if you want to have time to shower and not go to school smelling like a farm animal," he teases.

Robbie just sticks out her tongue at him, then continues on her regular morning round.

Rolls

MIND, Investigate - (3D6, 1D6)

3D6 : (325) = 10

1D6 : (2) = 2

Sep 7, 2023 2:48 pm
OOC:
No successes on the roll. Generally, you can use luck, or you can push the roll. However, I’m having Robbie do this passively and mostly to help paint the story’s setting, so I would say she wouldn’t get those options in this case.
As Robbie finishes her morning chores and her father heads back to the barn, she thinks about taking a moment for herself to wander away from the farmhouse. However, still feeling that nagging bit of guilt about her thoughts from earlier, she decides it’s best to head back to the house. As she’s walking, she notices a large flock of birds in a distant field. Although interesting, she doesn’t give them more than a passing thought.

@Dr_B I'll have you go next with Tanya's introduction scene showing her in everyday life. Do you have an idea, or do you want me to give you a scene?

OOC:
I'll come up with something, no prompt needed, thanks!

We find Tanya, predictably, in her home away from home: Kungsberga Public Library.
Tanya is sitting in her favourite nook, by the window. She raises her gaze from the pages of her book to look at a dog running after a stick his master threw.

She has left outside the clamor of the kids playing in the sunshine and making the most of the few summer weekends left before the long winter. She can hear her father's voice in her head, you should be out there too, running around and making friends.
She doesn't share that frantic euphoria. She remembers seasons by what books she reads. Reading of far away places her imagination is always elsewhere, anyway. Definitely not in dead-end, boring Kungsberga...

The librarian on shift - today it is Lotta, the one who smells like firewood - starts locking doors and pulling down venetian blinds, casting glances and smiles in her direction. Although this near closing time it is only the two of them , Lotta is mouthing in silence 'time to go home' as if the small library was full of scholars and academics from Uppsala deep in the study of philosophical works.

She sighs and closes the book. Smiling back she waves goodbye at the librarian, picking up the three books she has previously checked out for loan.
Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad
We by Yevgeny Zamyatin
The Red Room by August Strindberg, one that Professor Hedstrom asked her to get.

She smiles at the thought of her mentor, wishing that more people in this boring old town had half his wit and knowledge. The man's eyesight is getting worse, and he often asks her to read for him. She is very glad to have him in her life, and dreads the thought of what she will do once he's gone. The old man is not getting any younger...

As she walks home, she thinks that after the chores her Mum left her to do she might have time for a quick visit to Hedstrom.
But first, the list of chores awaits her - inevitably pinned by magnets on the fridge door in the kitchen.

Could be worse. Think of the ungodly hours and heavy tasks Robbie's got to do. Robbie once told her, a shocking account that felt ominously close to child labour to her.
She shivers at the thought, and turns into her driveway.

As Tanya enters the house, a palpable sense of solitude greets her. Both her parents are out. Her father probably on his bus route while her mother likely has her hands full with her responsibilities at Riksenergi.

She heads to the kitchen to review the list of chores her mother left on the fridge. The chores are typical, but she notices a note from her mother to her father.
note says:
Working late.

Don’t forget to ask me about Lena and Gunner’s latest "vacation" news! 😍 haha
Some inside joke that Tanya’s not aware of.

Midway through Tanya’s chores. Her father arrives home earlier than expected carrying some food presumably for dinner.
OOC:

Feel free to change or suggest something if you think things happen differently.

How does Tanya react to the silent house and the sudden arrival of her father?

Did Tanya leave her library books out somewhere that her father could easily discover them?
Sep 7, 2023 10:35 pm
Tanya feels the emptiness of the house. She normally does not mind being alone, but she was secretly hoping her mum would be free this weekend. What are they constantly researching in that place, anyway? She shrugs, folding the clean laundry.

She is startled by her dad's arrival, but tries to disguise it. She however casts a glance at her satchel on the floor, glad that she left the loaned books in there, out of sight.

"Hello Dad, how was your day -- any good stories from the bus crowd, today?" she asks him. Sometimes her dad meets weird passengers, and Tanya is eager for the stories.

You won't believe this one," he begins, his eyes twinkling with amusement. "There's this elderly lady, Mrs. Johansson, who gets on the bus every now and then. She's a sweet old soul, but she's got a fascination with telepathy, you know, reading minds…" His story continues about how Mrs. Johansson now believes that the animals in the park are talking directly to her.

As he places the bags of groceries on the kitchen table and begins to take off his coat, he sees the note on the fridge from Tanya’s mother.

"Your mum won't be coming home tonight, Tanya. She's got some important work at Riksenergi, and it might take her a while. You know how it goes with these projects." He tries to put on a reassuring smile. After a brief pause, he proceeds to skillfully shift the conversation toward a more cheerful tone as they engage in a lively discussion about their respective days.

@LightOfMidnight Emilia’s up next for her introduction scene showing her in everyday life. Do you have an idea, or do you want me to give you a scene?

OOC:
I thought I had one, then realised it would more be a single post then see as it was her alone :p If you could give me one to jump of this time, it's the end of a long week for me readjusting to work :p

OOC:
Gladly! As always feel free to tweak or suggest anything.
Emilia stands in the kitchen, meticulously preparing a special dinner for her mother, a rare occasion when their schedules align. The air is filled with a delightful aroma. Her culinary skills have greatly improved, especially since she started talking regularly with Mrs. Kindall, the home economics teacher. Mrs. Kindall always seems to know what to say and is a good listener, a rare trait for any grown-up. It was she who suggested showcasing Emilia’s cooking skills to her mother. Until now, Emilia has kept it a secret from almost everyone.

Despite her mother's attempts to lend a helping hand, Emilia has waved her away, determined to create a memorable meal all on her own. ‘Every Breath You Take’ by The Police plays quietly from a radio on the counter.

From the adjacent room, her mother's voice calls out 'Are you sure that I can't give you a hand?' The words hang in the air.
OOC:
- What type of meal is Emilia attempting to prepare for her mother?

- How does her mother feel about Emilia taking on this cooking task? Is she indifferent, delighted, or nervous because she might burn down the house?

- To assess the outcome of Emilia's cooking, could you select one of her skills and describe how she applies it to cook, enhance, or modify the meal to make it a success? Afterward, you can make a roll with that skill to determine the degree of success.

'Sorry I can't come out tonight, we're going out for a family meal. A really fancy place'

That had been the most recent lie told. It runs through Emilia's head as she tries to focus on the food in front of her. For an adult it may seem simple, pasta and a meat sauce, but it was a recipe she had slowly been building on, experimenting with. The mix of seasonings came from a collection slowly being built up when she could afford from the budget her Mum gave her for sorting food when she was unable to make it home. Her mother had of course expected it to more go on cheap easy to make ready meals rather than self cooked thing.

She'd been surprised when she'd come back to the collection of stuff on the counter, including the seasoning normally hidden away in a back of a cupboard, and a nervous request from Emilia to cook. Especially since Emilia tends to be out with her friends more often than not nowadays. Maybe that was why she hadn't put up too much resistance, the shock, or maybe happiness that Emilia actually wanted to interact and do something together.

[b'I can do it' [/b] The girls response comes out a bit sharp as she's trying to focus on what in front of her as well. To the side is a recipe, about the 4th of 5th iteration. 'Sorry.. you.. you should rest. I'm nearly done.'
OOC:
Going to try and argue investigate as she will have worked on the recipie and researched what did and didn't work. Otherwise would likely be comprehend, so minus the last d6.

LightOfMidnight says:
'Sorry I can't come out tonight, we're going out for a family meal. A really fancy place'
OOC:
Love this detail. It says a lot about Emilia.
Emilia's hands move with a blend of focus and anxiety as she puts the finishing touches on the meal. Carefully, she plates the food, her eyes scanning the arrangement as the delightful aroma fills the kitchen. With a touch of apprehension, she decides to take a sample before her mother tries it, and... it's not just good; it's great!"

Perhaps it's the meticulous pasta rinsing and the pinch of salt, or the discovery of that seasoning in the back of the cupboard. Maybe it's the artistic touch of spinach she's added as garnish. Whatever it is, it works like culinary magic.
OOC:
What is Emilia’s reaction and how does her mother respond?

Group Info
OOC:
I believe this scene is wrapping up. I'm going to post the first group scene in a new chapter, so that everyone can start thinking about it. I think I'll run future individual scenes simultaneously to allow everyone to stay engaged.

@LightOfMidnight don't feel obligated to rush this scene.

OOC:
Yeah sorry. Been a busy firt week back at work so ben resting most this weekend with a fried brain ;P
Sure the parsley was good, but was it too much garlic? Not enough salt? Even as her mother seems appreciative of a home cooked meal and polishes off Emilia can't help but find the small little faults still there, that still need improving.

Even so she doesn't voice it out loud, just trying to enjoy being in her mothers company for once.
