Chapter 1: First Meeting

An Unexpected Meeting in the Sea Gorge of Sind

https://i.imgur.com/mvanYzA.jpg

Evading the Rajahadraja's guards through tunnels under the city of Jahore, Tasya and her party carefully but speedily make their way to the end of a treacherous sewer tunnel that drops into a vast gorge. The gorge is a massive sea passage decorated with ancient carved arches and pillars, much older than the city itself.

Tasya agilely uses her legs to secure herself while she hangs her body out a bit from the sewer pipe to peer into the vast space. When she does, she sees a lone ship sailing through the gorge. The ship sails away from a dark sea tunnel through the gorge toward the daylight of Jahore's harbor.

On the ship is the most peculiar crew: a Rakasta captain, a Sindhi monk, a goblin, and a group of newly freed human prisoners of slavers who were until recently transported on the very ship they now themselves sail. One tattooed human woman has the look of a barbarian from distant lands. This unlikely crew recently navigated through the massive network of sea tunnels, avoiding bashing in to tunnel walls during the harsh incoming tide.

...

"Hold tight little one." Tasya says to her small sprite companion on her shoulder. She wraps a foot around one of the two outer ropes of the ladder, like she would do on the circus high wire and shouts, "HO THERE UNKNOWN VESSEL!"

With the air of a sailor, or possibly a pirate, Admiral, the former pirate captain of the Whisker and current pira...err...sea captain of this 'commandeered' slaver's vessel, calls up to Tasya. "Ahoy there!"

"Could you assist us?!" Taysa calls back. "We've reached the end of our rope and terrible men are after us!"

"I’ll see what I can do!" shouts back Admiral. The racasta begins calling for his crew to lower the sails and slow down the ship. He looks over his shoulder at the goblin Skeev. "What’s caught your eye, Skeev?"

...
OOC:
There are some things I mentioned in this setup text that Tasya and Admiral wouldn't yet know about each other's situation. You know what your characters know in game and can roleplay accordingly.

Okay it's all you. Let's have some fun

"Heard a splash and caught a glimpse of large a fin and flash of metal disappear into the water." replies Skeev to Admiral's inquiry.

[ +- ] Brief description of Admiral for RageRed’s benefit
"Ominous!" declares Admiral. "Better stay away from the water." He begins hastily rummaging through a nearby crate and waves Skeev over to help. "Help me find some spare rope so we can get that girl down from there."
OOC:
I assume it’s easy enough to find rope on a boat but here’s an investigation check just in case.

...My phenomenal luck continues!

Sep 13, 2023 8:43 pm
"I might be able to jump onto the mast and sails." Tasya calls out. "But, my companion tied to me is not trained in such agile feats." She adds and glances back up to the end of the pipe and the rope that is tied about her leading into it.
Sep 13, 2023 11:22 pm
OOC:
RageRed, I'm not sure my description of the rope ladder and the iron rings made any sense (in Tasya's Backstory thread), but in case it didn't:

Since Tasya secured the rope ladder's iron rings onto the iron rods at mouth of the sewer pipe, she could drop the ladder down into the gorge if she wants. It's hard for her to tell for sure, but it looks like the ladder would drop down the gorge wall and make it pretty close to the water level below, maybe there would be a 10-15 foot drop left. From the end of the ladder to the deck level of the boat would be significantly less of a drop. But the boat would have to get right up to the gorge wall to climb down the ladder and drop onto the deck.

That is just an option. You could explore any way you think is best.
Sep 14, 2023 5:11 am
OOC:
Admiral was planning to climb to the top of the mast, attach the rope, and then misty step over to the pipe with the other end of the rope so that Tasya and Mischa might climb across but, if the ladder is that long, perhaps Tasya could just toss the other end of the ladder to Admiral on top of the mast and then she and Mischa could climb across that way? Either that or Admiral could just try to get the ship a bit closer without crashing into the wall of the gorge :P
Sep 14, 2023 5:20 am
OOC:
I think it's okay if we spend a little time roleplaying here, since this is the moment two of our our three main characters are getting to meet. So, I say go ahead and keep roleplaying. The method will unfold one way or another. :)
Sep 14, 2023 7:24 am
Admiral stops digging through the crate and glances down in surprise when Skeev points out the rope right in front of him. "Oh! Right! Thanks!" With a grunt of effort, he lifts up the coil of rope and loops it over his shoulder like a bandolier. He quickly scrambles up the nearest mast, using his claws to grip onto the wood and propel himself upward. When he reaches the top, he hooks his legs around the topmost spar to keep from falling and begins securing one end of the rope to the masthead. He shouts across to Tasya, "How about rope? Could they climb across a rope, do you think?"
Sep 14, 2023 8:32 am
"Perhaps." Tasya replies. "We do have this ladder. Its secured to iron rods at the mouth of the pipe. Between the rope and the ladder, we should be able to get everyone safely onboard."
Sep 15, 2023 2:01 am
"I reckon so!" agrees Admiral, optimistically. Once the rope is secure, he flicks his wrist and a battered old scimitar materializes in his hand. The blade is chipped and corroded, but there is a pretty blue-and-red gem set into the pommel. Holding the free end of the rope in one hand and the sword in the other, he grins, winks conspiratorially, and then… vanishes.

In the very same instant, he appears beside Mischa in the mouth of the pipe, still holding onto the rope.
Sep 15, 2023 3:59 pm
Mischa holds onto her rope harness and tries to peer into the gorge to see who Tasya is communicating with. At the top of the mast, when Admiral's old scimitar materializes and the blue-and-red gem becomes visible, her eyes go wide. Tasya notices Mischa's reaction.

When Admiral slyly materializes in the pipe, the blue-and-red gem begins to noticeably swirl. When Tasya looks at it next to her, an image flashes in her mind...
[ +- ] Tasya's Mental Flash
As Admiral moves close to Tasya he can feel his scimitar, Reaver, vibrating with energy. He too suddenly has a flash. It's a memory...he almost forgot it...
[ +- ] Admiral's Flashback
As both Tasya and Admiral snap out of their mental flashes, they both hear some voices from deeper within the sewer pipe. Almost simutaneously there is a scream from the ship below.
Sep 15, 2023 9:01 pm
Tasya shakes off the weird feelings and the sudden flash of that damn portal again. This is no time for that sort of thing. She quickly glances down toward the ship, as she hears the scream.
Last edited September 16, 2023 6:40 pm
Sep 16, 2023 1:25 am
It is hard to tell from its tone if the scream came from a man or woman, but when Tasya looks below at the deck of the ship, she sees a human male, crying in agony as he is quickly pulled into the water by rope attached to a harpoon that's lodged deep into the man's chest. The screaming man disappears over the ship's deck along with the rope and harpoon, followed by a splash.

Then from beyond the bend of the sewer pipe Tasya hears--and Admiral as well--an uncontrolled exclamation echo.

"Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh!"

With each frantic articulation the exclamation sounds like it gets closer at a rapid rate as if someone is sliding down the pipe.
Sep 16, 2023 1:55 am
Admiral curses colorfully as he glances between the ship below and the tunnel behind him. He finishes tying the rope to one of the iron rods at the mouth of the sewer pipe and then vanishes again, reappearing at the top of the mast. He shouts back to Tasya. "Help your friend across, aye? I have to help my crew!"

From his lofty vantage point up on top of the mast, Admiral scours the water below for any sign of whatever dragged the man overboard, arcane energy crackling in his claws.

Admiral
A silvery mist suddenly forms at top of the mast before it quickly materializing as Admiral.

From his vantage point high up on the mast, Admiral scours the the water below. In the calm water between waves, Admiral can make out the form of something swimming near the boat. It disappears, perhaps swimming under the boat, then becomes visible again--still under water--behind the boat.

The figure moves like a fish, but appears to have the upper limbs of a humanoid. It is large, probably 8 foot long, and holds something metallic as it swims.
OOC:
Admiral is within range of eldritch blast, and would have advantage to his attack roll from his vantage point.
Tasya
As Tasya swings out from the ladder and begins to move with her hands across the anchoring rope, Petalwing hold's on to her shoulder armor tightly exclaiming, "Woooo! Fun, Fun. Swing, Swing!"

Mischa, attached to Tasya by her rope harness, responds quickly to Tasya's prompt and grabs the anchoring rope, following Tas.

Meanwhile, the frantic voice sliding down the sewer pipe gets closer and louder.
OOC:
We will make this maneuver across the rope DC 10 (Tasya gets +7 from her acrobatics proficiency and can roll with advantage, while Mischa gets +0 and has disadvantage due to exhaustion.
Mischa's hand slips and she looses her hold on the rope. She desperately grips on to the rope with her other hand. Tasya can tell she is about to loose the grip of her other hand.
OOC:
If Tasya's roll succeeds she is able to swing back and help Mischa regain her grip and the two will make it across. If her roll fails, Mischa will slip off the rope. Mischa is tied to Tasya, so Tasya will have to make a Strength saving throw to keep from loosing her own grip with Mischa dangling below her. We'll say she has advantage here too because of her circus training. The DC is 13

Tasya
Tasya helps her companions make it to the mast head and then down to the deck, climbing quickly under Admiral. As soon as she is on solid ground, she looks up to see what was sliding down the sewer pipe after her and her friends. She sees a Rajahadraja guard fly out from the pipe opening, with a panicked yell, and barely grab onto the rope between the pipe and the mast. He then awkwardly hangs on to it for a moment, securing his grip. "Hurry!" he screams back in the direction of the pipe.

Then he begins to try to shimmy his way across the rope. It looks difficult for him, as he is heavily armored and encumbered with weapons.

Admiral
Admiral's blast hits the creature in the water; It's figure writhes under the water. And then seems to swim deeper out of Admiral's sight. It quickly appears again on the side of the boat, where it surfaces and heaves a large harpoon onto the deck, this time in the direction of Taresh, who had been looking over the rail trying to locate the source of the previous attack.

Mischa also closes her eyes and brings one hand to her temple. She then opens her eyes and looks up at the guard swinging across the rope. The guard lets out a painful scream as a sharp pain fills his head. Through the flash of pain, he does all he can to focus on keeping his grip on the rope.

Admiral slashes through the rope attached to the mast before he leaps down to the deck below, digging his claws into the mast to slow his fall. His claws leave long furrows in the polished wood. He lands lightly on the deck beside Tasya and whirls to face the Merrow, swords and teeth bared.
OOC:
I'm cutting the rope as an action, using cat's claws and feline agility to move 40ft down the mast and onto the deck, and then targeting the Merrow with Hexblade's curse as a bonus action. Also I think you maybe skipped Skeev in the initiative?
Sep 19, 2023 4:29 am
OOC:
Oops. You're right. Thanks! I forgot to put Skeev on the list, therefore I skipped over him, which is funny because I did have an idea what he might attempt. Anyway we can fix that...
Skeev dashes over to the ballista on the deck side that Taresh is on. He grabs some ammunition from the box near it and loads the weapon. He then jumps up on the ammo box using it as a platform, planning to use the extra height to aim toward the water effectively.

Admiral's slash at the rope severs its connection to the ship mast and sends the guard hurling into the gorge wall. He hits it with a heavy thud accompanied by the the clank of his armor, still managing to hold on to the rope as he now hangs straight down from the sewer pipe.

Then, with his feline agility, Admiral swiftly gets down to the deck moving close enough to the Merrow to place a curse on it.

Petalwing chuckles on Tasya's shoulder, "Ha ha. Mad strong, strong can't come, come."

Briya follows Skeev's lead and takes control of another ballista, while the four remaining crew member back away from the edge of the deck.

The Merrow hisses as he prepares to pull his next prey (Taresh) into the water as soon as his harpoon lodges into his victim, but Taresh dodges the harpoon, which clanks on to the deck.

Two guards appear at the pipe opening. One begins to pull up the rope from which his comrade dangles below. The other loads and fires a crossbow toward the ship.

Mischa raises her hand to her temple again and attempts to penetrate the mind of the guard with the crossbow. After a moment of intently trying, she lowers her hand; she cannot seem to penetrate his current focus.

Admiral's blast causes the water around the merrow to crackle with energy, but when the energy dissipates the creature seems unaffected and still fiercely focussed on retrieving its wedged harpoon.

...

"Aww...miss, miss friend. I help." Petalwing says sypathetically to Tasya, still on her shoulder. Then the sprite chuckles and says mischievously, "I make mad strong, strong see mousy big, big." She then goes invisible and Tasya feels her hop off her shoulder.

...

Briya, at the ballista on the port side of the ship, quickly turns the loaded weapon upward as far as she can. She is only able to get a shot at the guard hanging on the rope. But the angle is not right and the shot falls short sending rubble flying from the the gorge wall. The rest of the crew remains noticeably scared and still unsure what to do.

...

The merrow is angered and gives his harpoon rope a hefty pull to try to dislodge it (which would most likely mean ripping apart the starboard rail it is wedged on.) Its rage grows as it still cannot seem to pull its weapon free.

...

One guard keeps pulling up the other on the rope. The whole time putrid waist water spills from the pipe. The hanging guard continues to be soaked by it. It makes the gorge wall slippery, and his feet slip every time he tries to use them to help his ascent. Meanwhile, the guard with the crossbow loads and takes aim at his last attacker, Tasya. His focus on his shot is interrupted by something and he yells to his comrade pulling the rope, "A giant rat!!"...the shot lets loose and flies completely off course thudding into the ship deck.

The Merrow’s harpoon is wedged in the railing thanks to Taresh and the creature itself is badly wounded thanks to Skeev, so Admiral does not think it poses much of a threat to the crew right now. Even so, he leaps up onto the starboard railing (a little to the left of where the harpoon is wedged) and hurls another eldritch blast at the creature.

"Over here, you ugly bastard!" he snarls, trying to distract the Merrow to keep it from picking off any more of his crew while they attend to the sails.

The crew is motivated by Admirals direction. They quell their individual fears and return to their stations intent on getting the ship moving.

As Admiral jumps onto the starboard rail, Taresh cuts the harpoon's rope with Skeev's dagger. When the rope is severed, the merrow jerks backward in the water. Admiral's taunt from the railing and his blast that charges the water near the creature makes the merrow realize he is sufficiently wounded and his prospect for more meat than the one crew member he pulled in earlier is lost. In disgust, he dives and disappears, giving up on his harpoon, which falls to the deck with a metallic thud.

...

When the crew raises the sails and the ship begins to lunge forward once again, Petalwing--who, in her invisible state, climbed the mast to get close enough--enjoys taunting the guard with an attack from the imaginary giant rat under her command. At the same time Mischa attempts to deliver the guard more psychic pain. The guard himself drops his crossbow at his side and draws his sword to attack the 'rat', ferociously attacking it...so intent on it, Mischa cannot penetrate his mind.

The other guard still is making progress pulling up the rope with the fallen one dangling from it.

As the ship begins to pull away, Tasya fires one last shot at the guard who intently swings his sword at the air. He awkwardly thrusts and parries nearly loosing his balance each time in shin deep slippery waste flowing out of the pipe.

His partner finally pulls up the fallen guard from the the rope just as Tasya's bolt hits the guard fighting the imaginary foe. The bolt lodges into a gap in the man's armor just above his knee, causing him to lose his balance and be pushed out of the pipe opening by the flowing waist water. "Aaaah!" he screams as he drops from the sewer into the gorge. Perhaps he will become another meal for the greedy merrow.

...

It's not long before the ship's full sails get it moving at a hasty pace through the gorge. At this rate, the gorge will open into the harbor in about 10 minutes or less.
Sep 22, 2023 9:20 pm
Tasya slumps down onto the deck in a sitting position and sighs heavily. "I really hate those people..."
Sep 23, 2023 1:41 am
Admiral jumps down from the railing and onto the deck. "Welcome aboard!" he says, cheerily, as he makes his way over to where Tasya and Mischa are slumped on the deck.

"The name’s Admiral," he introduces himself, sticking out a hand for a handshake. "Captain of the Whisker. And this ship too, I suppose..." His whiskers twitch and he glances around at the ship dubiously as if he’s not quite sure how he feels about that. He gives himself a shake and his upbeat attitude returns. "By the looks of things, we’ll be sailing out into the Jahore harbour in a few short minutes, where we will be making port and, in all likelihood, abandoning this vessel. Make yourselves comfortable, in the meantime."
Sep 23, 2023 7:08 pm
"Umm..so you're Captain Admiral?" Tasya asks somewhat confused, as she accepts his hand. "Tasya..just Tasya." She confides to the Racasta swordsman. "Jahore is infested with more of those red-garbed creeps. They're swarming the docks and have taken some of our companions." She glances over to Mischa. "We're performers."
Sep 23, 2023 9:45 pm
"Yes, from Madagast Circus...whatever's left of it," Mischa pipes in saying the latter part sadly under her brerath.

On mention of Madagast, Taresh walks over to the conversation. "I'm Taresh Sanji. Monk of the Order of the Keis"
Sep 24, 2023 12:40 am
"Sounds silly when you string it together like that, doesn’t it?" Admiral remarks wryly, in response to Tasya’s confusion about his name.

He frowns. "I suppose the Ring may have agents waiting at the docks for us too, come to think of it. Regardless, we do have to abandon this ship. Remaining aboard would make it far too easy for the Ring to find us… We could flee Jahore entirely, I suppose, sail out to sea, but this ship isn’t exactly agile, especially with a crew this small and inexperienced. Anyone who wished to catch us would not have much trouble, be that your ‘red-garbed creeps’ or the Iron Ring." He hesitates, then continues, "My ship, the Whisker, is fast, well-crewed, and heavily armed. She’ll be docked in the harbour. If we can get aboard… and if I can regain control of her… then we would be able to safely flee Jahore to wheresoever you please."

Tasya recognizes the order of monks Taresh Sanji mentions. She turns to him. "Yes. Those of our troupe who had made it Jahore were all with members of your order, Brother Sanji, below the tavern of the Resting Dragon when the red guards bursts in. I am yet knowledgeable of what has become of them all and if any, like ourselves, found a means of escape."

Hearing Admiral speak our the Whisker, she returns her focus to the Captain. "Our troupe leader had made some kind of deal with the crew of your ship, I believe, to transport us all to a nearby island to retrieve our own ship."

"Tasya, it's very likely that Jin and the troupe along with Master Jiren and the others did escape the guards. There is another way out of the Resting Dragon cellar beside the gate you came in and the trap door we found...a hidden door in the cellar meeting chamber leads to a dark alley along side the Inn. They would have hastened through that door upon any signs of trouble," Mischa assures Tasya. "I would be willing to bet Jin hurried the troupe to the Whisker."

Mischa turns to Taresh. "Taresh Sanji, Monk of the Keis you say?" Her look is serious and thoughful. "Master Jiren..." she quickly turns to Tasya, "before you made it to the gathering" and then back at Taresh "...mentioned he sent one of his Keis order to infiltrate the Order of the Shadow to learn of their operations and motives. Your name stirs my recollection, Brother Sanji."

"As does the name of your circus master, Madagast," replies the monk. "Yes, I did spend many months with the Order of the Shadow, learning their ways, before falling victim to a trap of the Iron Ring." He pauses and seems lost for a moment in uncomfortable memories before continuing. "Madagast's name was mentioned by The Order of the Shadow. Perhaps our meeting in this gorge is more fateful than mere coincidence."
Sep 24, 2023 7:12 am
Admiral isn’t particularly interested in whatever monk-stuff Mischa and Taresh are going on about, but lifts an eyebrow at the revelation that his crew has already begun making deals and plans in his absence. "Oh? How kind of my crew to help a scattered circus troupe recover their ship," he says, dryly. "Assuming my crew does not betray your troupe— and I have to warn you that they seem to have developed a taste for treachery of late —perhaps we could avoid the docks altogether and intercept them at this island instead."

Tasya nods in agreement with Admiral. "I must admit this arrangement with the Whisker has been of concern to me since discovering it when we finally arrived in Jahore. I have experienced quite enough treachery in the last few days."

Go ahead and roleplay as much as you would like here.

FYI, while everyone discusses the situation, the boat is making its way to the harbor. (I will sketch a quick map of the harbor asap.) Both Admiral and Tasya would know--Admiral from prior visits to Jahore and Tasya from entering the port on the circus ship--that there are large rock structures riddling one side of the harbor and this gorge likely comes out on that side. The various piers--where the circus ship was docked and the Whisker may currently be docked--are on the opposite side of the harbor. Just let me know what your intentions are, you can roleplay that out and make it clear to me that way if you would like.
Sep 25, 2023 12:41 pm
"That makes two of us," mutters Admiral. Considering all that Tasya and Mischa shared with him, he rethinks his original plan, deciding instead: "We’ll drop anchor in the harbour, far from where the ships dock, and try to get a better idea of what we may be up against before we approach. There’s no sense in making more elaborate plans right now when, for all we know, the Whisker may not even be in Jahore anymore." His ears droop a little at the thought.

Here is a map of Jahore Port harbor. Wish I was better at designing and drawing a map like this, but maybe it will help you anyway.

A - Where the Circus ship was docked when the troupe arrived.
B - The Resting Dragon Inn

Jahore rests on different elevations above the water level. I marked elevations on feet to give you an idea. I also marked the elevations of many of the rocky structures jutting out of the water in the harbor.

[Update: add 100 feet to all elevations on the map except to the 0 feet and 5 feet places]

Tasya, Mariquette, Petalwing...and Stripe :( ... would have made it to the Inn following along side the road that winds around the piers and market area.

Admiral doesn't know for sure where the the Whisker would have been docked, but a successful Wisdom check (DC 10 w/ advantage) would allow him to be reasonably sure, based on past experience in Jahore, what options the Whisker crew had.

[Update: I decided that you should add 100 feet to all elevations on the map except to the 0 feet and 5 feet places. The 20’ and 80’ at the bottom center of the map should be a total of more like 150’ and 200’ respectively.

The port city should be more massive looking, nested on different elevation levels. This also makes the rocks jutting out of the water more realistic cover for The Ring as well as keeping the Sindhi nobles and high caste feeling safely insulated from the activities of merchants and pirates in the harbor, which is one reason (besides much corruption) that they are allowed to freely come and go from this city. This would be both Tasya’s and Admiral’s basic understanding of Jahore.

One more thing, let’s call the ‘guild market’, The Lower Market, as the ‘Guild Market’ should be (off map) up on higher elevation, deeper in the city.

Thanks for the map!
As the ship exits the gorge and begins sailing out into the harbour proper, Admiral dashes off to see if he can find a spyglass somewhere aboard the ship so that they can get a better look at the docks without getting too close, leaving Tasya, Petalwing, and Mischa to their own devices.

Rummaging through the ship, above deck Admiral sees nothing but stockades, cages, shakles, and ballista, but below deck he finds:

> some barrels of fresh water
> some chests of provisions, filled with preserved food and rations, which could sustain a crew for weeks.
> some crates of rum bottles, enough to keep morale high for quite a while.
> A large crate with more shackles and corresponding keys.
> More crates of ammunition for the ballistas above.
> And finally...a smaller chest with a compass, some charts detailing routes to different islands as well as the seas around them, and a spyglass.

As he searches he thinks of where his former crew may have docked The Whisker:

[C] They may have brought the ship to Dexar Blackthorn's pier. That shady dockmaster always turns a blind eye to any 'illicit' activity and ensures the ship avoids any inspections or delays from authorities...well, for a cut of the profits from any smuggling or raided loot he harbors anyway.

[D] Perhaps, they took the ship in under the guise of needing 'repairs' and brought the Whisker to Barnaby "Bolt" Driftwood's Shipyard, The Rusty Rigger. That burly man with a scruffy beard, does shoddy work, but always keeps his mouth shut for a little extra coinage.

[E] Or maybe they went to old "Silver-tongue" Lysandra Thorne's dock. That sly merchant is involved in a wide range of activities, mostly smuggling exotic goods. But she's notorious for inflating prices, selling counterfeit goods, and engaging in extortion. Her web of corruption extends into various aspects of Jahore's black market and Admiral has always suspected that she has some connections with The Iron Ring.

Admiral takes the charts, the compass, and the spyglass and swipes a few ship’s biscuits from the provisions chest too. He hasn’t eaten anything except for a few pieces of jerky since he woke up in that dingy cell hours and hours ago and his stomach feels jagged and empty. When he returns to the deck, he finds Briya at the tiller and asks her to steer the ship toward the middle of the harbour, where he ought to be able to get a good look at all three possible locations with the spyglass.

While all the strangers are moving about on the deck, Tasya tries to wash some of the stench off of herself from her smelly trip through the sewer.
Sep 27, 2023 1:22 pm
With nothing but some salt water that has collected in a puddle on deck from the crashing waves earlier, Tasya tries to get the sewer stench off herself. Petalwing returns to Tasya's side. While looking at her reflection in the puddle the sprite sighs painfully and says, "Salty-salt. Me parchy-parched. Need fresh-fresh."

As Tasya cleans herself she sees Admiral, maps, spyglass, and compass in hand, hasten by. He marches to the tillers on the aft deck and commands one operator, a fit, pale, tattooed woman with brownish hair, to steer the ship toward the middle of the harbor.

Meanwhile Mischa stares off into the distance, or maybe inwardly.

...

Briya responds to Admiral. Navigating around tall rock structures jutting up out of the water, she gets the ship moving toward the center of the harbor. When it is in the open harbor, nearly halfway between the jutting rocks and all the activity of Jahore's piers, she calls for the the sails to be brought down and the anchor to be dropped.

Admiral then scours the piers through the spyglass. There's no sign of the Whisker at Blackthorn's pier. There is a ship careened at Driftwood's. It's not the Whisker. At first Admiral cannot tell if the Whisker is in the shipyard's drydock or not. But when he finally sees the large doors open, a different ship sails out. He knows his ship was not hiding there. Finally he turns his sight to Lysandra Thorne's dock. And there it is, The Whisker, just getting on its way, on the move from the dock.
Sep 27, 2023 9:28 pm
Tasya wipes her hand off on her clothes and pulls out a waterskin from her pack. She uncorks it and pours some fresh water into a cupped hand and holds it down for Petalwing to drink and splash in. "There, little one. I will need to replenish our food and water soon."

Admiral curses. He’d been hoping to intercept the Whisker while she was at port. Now that she’s moving, their chances of catching her seem vanishingly slim. The Whisker’s fast and has the advantage of an experienced, well-rested crew. The handful of former slaves Admiral has to work with are surprisingly talented but they’ve already been working for hours and Admiral doubts they have the constitution to keep at it for much longer without a rest. He curses again for good measure.

"Hoist the sails! Weigh anchor!" he calls out, though there is a note of panic and uncertainty in his voice that wasn’t there a moment prior. "We’re following the Whisker!" Hopefully, his former crew make good on their promise to Tasya’s troupe and make port at that island she mentioned.

OOC:
It’s possible that the Whisker would deduce that the ship is an Iron Ring slaver vessel from its appearance and what’s on deck. But not many have seen these ships beyond the Ring agents themselves and the poor captured folk being transported on them. The fact that this ship currently is in the open center of the harbor is not a regular occurrence. It’s true that many merchants, pirates, and nobles have secret dealings with the Ring, but the Ring still keeps a low profile even in this harbor of corruption. For example this ship would have stayed to the rocky side of the harbor and sailed into the gorge before dawn this morning. Admiral, nor his former crew has even seen these slaver ships.

OOC:
Being a pirate, one thing that Admiral recognizes aboard the this ship and that he would associate to The Ring is the particular design of the chests he saw below deck. They are the same design as the chests that the Ring agents brought aboard the Whisker as downpayment for the job Admiral refused and then promptly tossed the agents overboard. It’s likely those chests still remain on the Whisker.

Okay, good to know!
Admiral collapses the spyglass and glumly confides in Briya, "I don’t think we’re fast enough to catch her."

As the crew begin preparing the ship to sail again, he stares out across the water, watching the distant shape of the Whisker glide across the harbour, elegant and swift. He sighs wistfully. There’s no hope. A ship like this is meant for carrying cargo, not chasing down other ships…

Suddenly, his eyes light up....

"That’s it!" he says. "I have an idea!"

He gathers his makeshift crew, along with Tasya and Mischa, at the aft of the ship to outline his plan.

"We can’t catch the Whisker," he begins. "But maybe we don’t have to! Maybe we just have to let them catch us." He goes on to explain that they’re going to follow the Whisker for a while, at a distance, until they’re well away from the Jahore harbour (no pirate would be stupid enough to attack another ship in a friendly harbour). After that, all they have to do is bait the Whisker into pursuing them.

"We can fill any empty barrels we find belowdecks with seawater to slow us down and make the ship sit low on the water, like it would if it were carrying a lot of cargo," he explains. "We’ll be an ideal target for piracy! They won’t be able to resist."

Sep 29, 2023 10:30 pm
"I don't like at all being trapped on a slaver ship either," replies Mischa. "We did need a ship though. Maybe this thing is it. Jin hopefully is taking the others to Elegy to renite with our circus ship. And on that island Lady Oceana's ability to see the power of other realms may give us some insight in to your mother's circumstances."

Petawing excitedly says, "Yes-yes! Lady Oceana love-love the sea fey too."

Suddenly, Tasya hears Admiral exclaim from the aft deck standing next to the tiller woman. "That’s it! I have an idea!" He calls out to invite everyone to the aft deck to outline a plan.

"Captain Admiral." pipes in Briya in a desperate but stern tone. "What if they jump aboard with their swords flying? You just saved this battered crew from the clutches of The Iron Ring and fate of slavery. Now you would have them face pirates?"
Sep 30, 2023 11:48 pm
"We’re going to raise the white flag as soon as they raise the colours," Admiral answers. "Pirates will respect a surrender. It means they get what they want without having to risk their lives. It’s the whole point of the pirate flag, you know? To give folks a chance to give up before things get, er… messy." He clears his throat awkwardly. "Now, when they find out that I’m aboard, that’s a different story but I don’t expect any of you to fight them, if it comes down to that. You can hide belowdecks before they board, if you like." He hesitates, then continues, "But… if you still don’t want to do it, then I can’t make you. It’s everyone’s decision, not just mine."

As the crew disperse and get to work managing the sails, Admiral catches Skeev by the shoulder and gives the goblin his spyglass. "Keep an eye on the Whisker for me, alright? Don’t let her out of your sight."

He then divides the remaining tasks between those few people who are not occupied sailing the ship. "Taresh and Mischa, have a look around below decks and see if you can find some empty barrels or something, please. Admiral and Tasya certainly can find a way to unbolt the cages. I would think the Ring would want the cages to be modular and movable from one vehicle to another. So there’s a relatively easy way for them to unfasten the cages from the outside. Briya shouts instructions and the crew gets into motion. Within minutes the sails catch wind and the ship moves.

Tasya and Admiral set to work unfastening the cages and stockades and begin to push them overboard as the ship heads out of the harbor.

Skeev stations himself on the aft deck near Briya, with the spyglass expanded. He looks through it and relays the position of the Whisker to Briya who orders adjustments to the tillers and sails accordingly.

Mischa and Taresh head below deck to search for barrels and other ways to weigh down the ship. As they go, both Tasya and Admiral can hear them heavily engaged in conversation about The Keis and its rogue offshoot The Order of The Shadow.

An hour goes by. Skeev keeps the Whisker in sight; Briya maintains distance from it as Tasya, Admiral, Taresh, and Mischa sufficiently disguise the slaver vessel and weigh it down to make it appear to hold cargo. When the ship’s disguise is completed, Briya takes advantage of a turn the Whisker makes and navigates the now disguised vessel on a trajectory that will intercept the Whisker’s new direction, or at least come close enough to be noticed by the Whisker. The slaver vessel should come close enough to the Whisker in another hour or so.

Shortly after an hour passes, Briya makes the rounds to let Tasya, Admiral, and the others know that the Whisker has now changed its course and is heading toward their ship.

"If we changed our mind now we couldn't possibly outrun them," she admits. "The Whisker will be within firing range in less than 15 minutes and boarding range shortly thereafter. I hope your plan goes well, Captain Admiral."

Tasya is in the hold of the ship listening to the progress above as is it relayed to them.
Oct 14, 2023 8:39 pm
Briya raises the white flag and the crew drops the anchor. Just a few minutes later Skeev exclaims, "They are picking up speed and coming our way fast!" Soon everyone above deck can easily make out the Whisker, an elegant 12-ballista brig, it appears fast and agile built to efficiently catch and corner prey.

It heads fervently toward the disguised slaver vessel, but just before it makes it into firing range, the Whisker unexpectedly slows to a halt. It stops about a 1000 feet away from the party’s ship.

After a couple of minutes, Admiral pokes his head up from behind the crate, risking a peek at the puzzling situation. "What the fuck are they doing?" he mutters. Louder, he calls out to Skeev, "Can you see what’s happening on board?"

Skeev peers back into the spyglass before reporting, "Looks like an old peg leg human is arguing with a pointy ear elf. There's another human standing near them in some ugly purple clothes. The rest of them on deck look like the crew. They’re just standing still, watching the argument."
Oct 15, 2023 9:56 pm
Admiral watches the Whisker bobbing on the waves— near enough to taunt him but still just out of his reach— with growing impatience and frustration. He frowns. "This is taking too long… Let’s pull the anchor back up and see if we can’t sidle up next to them while they’re busy bickering."
Oct 16, 2023 8:47 am
The anchor is raised and the ship begins to close the distance. It's not long before it does in fact come up along side of the Whisker. The slaver ship is close enough that some loud words of a gruff male voice can be heard over the ocean air. They are hard to make out but an occasional word or phrase cuts through. One such distinguishable phrase is, "you're no better than that soft spinless racasta we disposed!"
Oct 16, 2023 11:19 pm
OOC:
How far apart are the two ships now?
The soft, spineless rakasta in question narrows his eyes at that, considering his options. He needs to get aboard the Whisker, he decides, preferably without being spotted and blasted to bits with a ballista. He fishes the invisible potion he found in the Nightmare’s hoard out of his pocket and gives it a speculative swirl. As before, he can hear the sloshing of liquid, though the vial appears to be empty. It stands to reason that drinking this potion would make him invisible too, he figures, though he has no way to know for certain. Before he can reconsider or lose his nerve, he yanks out the stopper with his teeth and, after a heartbeat’s hesitation, downs the invisible liquid inside.
Oct 17, 2023 5:23 am
OOC:
The slaver ship is coming in along side the Whisker and is within 10 feet of the Whisker. And as far as anyone above deck of the slaver ship can tell, no one on the the Whisker has raised any alarm, perhaps because they are engaged by the continuing conflict aboard.
Admiral Above Deck
Admiral downs the imperceptible liquid. He feels it do something to him, but he's not completely sure what. While he's drinking and pondering the potion's effect he hears, now more clearly, more of the argument occurring on the Whisker.

A voice that he recognizes as his treacherous former first mate Tarron says, "I am the captain of this ship and I say we get the ship back on route. We have circus cargo to transport to Elegy."

He then hears Sherwood's gruff protest, "You mean to say you would have us pass on the plunder of that fat ship out there!? For the peanuts promised by the circus fools!?"

Tarron retorts, "Yes old man, that's what I say. Unless you are prepared to captain this ship..." Tarron puts his hand on his sword hilt, "...I suggest you get to work!"

There is a moment pause and Sherwood says with a tinge of nervousness in his voice, "What think you all? Follow our fearless captain away from the booty at arms length, or throw him and his purple dressed cargo overboard and take to plunder ourselves?" He says 'fearless captain' with sarcastic disgust.

Tasya Below Deck
Mischa, Petalwing, and Tasya remain in the hold listening for signs of what is going on and occasionally peering through the small windows below.

At one point during the wait, Mischa says to Tasya, "Tasya...I still must unlock your mother's memories in you." She is going to say more when Petalwing, who perches in a scuttle window in the hull, exclaims:

"Look-look. Big-big boat close-close!"

When Tasya looks up to see through the window she sees that their small ship is coming along side the large Whisker. Her eyes make contact with Helleena's; the Fortuneteller also looks through a window below deck on the Whisker. Her eyes go wide upon seeing Tasya.
Oct 17, 2023 11:41 pm
Admiral grimaces at the now-empty vial and tosses it aside. Uncertain what effect the potion had, if any, he cautiously leans out from behind the crate of ammunition. "Psst! Skeev!" he whispers to get the goblin’s attention. "Am I invisible?"
Oct 18, 2023 3:28 am
Skeev looks in the direction of Admiral's voice. "Huh? What? Captain?" the goblin whispers back. "I can't see you. You doing your teleporting tricks again?"

...

There's no reply to Sherwood's question--Admiral can deduce that he addressed the rest of the Whisker's crew. The silence of the crew is followed by Tarron's order:

"Take the old peg-leg to the brig."

The sound of the crew bustling about on deck follows and Sherwood's voice is heard shouting, "Ahh!...you ALL are a spineless lot of blaggards. To the locker with you."

A strong, calm, resonant, and hypnotic voice, unfamiliar to Admiral enters the mix, "You and your crew have made a prudent choice Captain. There is certainly no wise reason to be distracted from your task of sailing to Elegy and delivering my troupe safely, as you agreed. Remember you will be paid in full only when we are delivered safely."

Tasya sneaks up on deck and quickly searches for the easiest way to jump or swing over.

When Tasya pulls the hood over her head and disappears, Petalwing gleefully says, "Yes-yes. Me too. Fun-fun." The sprite goes invisible, but with her cloak on Tasya can still see the faint outline of the sprite as Petalwing hops along after her.

"But Tasya.." Mischa starts to say then stops when she realizes Tasya has dashed away in her invisible state.

Above deck Tasya sees the crew working quietly to finish lowering the sails. She also sees the goblin looking puzzled in the direction of what she sees as the faint outline of Admiral. Admiral's figure leans out from behind an ammunition barrel. To Tasya his ethereal outlined form appears identical to the way Petalwing looks in her invisible state.

Realising that he’s got to hurry up if he wants to get aboard the Whisker before it leaves, Admiral darts across the deck, vaults over the ship’s railing, and jumps down into the water between the two ships, briefly disappearing beneath the waves. A moment later, he surfaces, hissing at the icy temperature of the water, and paddles over to the Whisker, where he latches onto the hull with his claws and begins clambering up the side of the ship.
Oct 19, 2023 6:55 pm
With barely ten foot separating the two vessels, Tasya takes a running jump—a long practiced feat for an acrobatic circus performer, and makes for the Whisker's deck, with a final spring off the slave ship's railing.
Oct 20, 2023 4:06 am
Admiral, chilled by the icy water, remains below the water surface immediately after making his audible splash. When he surfaces he covertly paddles to the ship and uses his Cat's Claws to climb the ship's hull.

Latched onto the outside of the ship, just below the railing, Admiral can clearly hear a conversation just over the rail above him.

"Yes, there is no wise reason to be distracted from our task of sailing to Elegy and delivering your troupe safely," Tarron repeats in a somewhat monotone manner. "...as I...agreed," he continues with a rather puzzled inflection to his last words as if he wonders why he says them.

"Yes," says the other voice. "And I am glad the majority of your crew shares your sentiment."

...

Tasya see's Admiral's ethereal form make a leap off the deck.

As Tasya readies to take a running jump off the slave ship's railing herself, Petalwing--whose small form had been desperately trying to keep up to Tasya's long strides--dogmatically lunges at Tasya, attempting to latch onto her as she leaps. The determined sprite manages to catch up and latch on with ease and grace, just as Tasya leaps.

The leap feels exhilarating and like home to Tasya, as if she is wowing a crowd when making a running leap to a trapeze bar far away from her at the top of the circus tent.

When the splash occurs in the water, one Whisker crew member notices. He stops his work coiling excess rigging rope near the rail and shifts to peer over the edge to see what could have made such a big splash. He peers over the rail near where Tarron and Jin are speaking. He doesn't see anything except the disturbed water, but keeps looking for a moment to be safe.

...

When Admiral surfaces he sees Mad Dog Morgan, expert rigger, peering over the rail. The pirate seems unaware of Admiral's clawed climb that follows. Admiral climbs and ultimately hangs onto the hull just a few feet away from the man peering over the edge, pausing directly under Tarron and Jin's conversation. He is still invisible.

Jin looks up at the pirate that seems to suddenly jerk downward, while Tarron, still feeling mind fog from the conversation with the circus master, does not notice the awkward shift of the pirate Morgan. Curious, Jin takes a step toward the rail and looks out; Tasya sees that he notices the slaver ship off the Whisker's stern. oopsylon, Man, yes, rolls of at least 10 would be nice sometimes.

As far as jabbing Tarron goes, we can assume that he's carelessly been wandering around the ship with just his clothes and sword, with out armor. So he get an armorless base AC of 10. And there is little way he could have predicted Admiral's invisible advance to parry or dodge (except the sloshy sound of boots perhaps), so I won't have his dexterity AC bonus does apply here. That said, I say Admiral successfully drives Reaver into Tarron's back and out the other side.
Morgan whimpers quietly, but doesn't move any other muscle.

Tarron's fogged mind pays no heed to the sound of Admiral's sloshing steps as Admiral slips behind him and places The Defender blade at the mutinous pirate's neck, simultaneously pushing Reaver out his chest through his back. Tarron's eyes goes wide. He gasps at realization of Admiral's words as blood erupts from his mouth and his body slumps to the deck.

The helmsman by the ship's wheel notices Tarron fall and utters, "Cap'n!?...What!?" He immediately calls out, "Cap'n be down! The circus ringleader skewered 'im proper."

A pirate on the starboard stern, tending to some rigging, hears the shout, draws a rusty blade, and runs up the stairs onto the poop deck. He sees Tarron's bloody body slumped on the deck at the bottom of the opposing staircase. He glares at Jin and keeps moving toward the other staircase.

...

When the helmsman shouts, the pirates tugging the peg-legged man to the brig are almost at the lower deck hatch with him. Tasya notices two of them break from that task and hasten her way toward the stairs she is on. Tasya hears Petalwing's quiet gasp in her ear.

The sound of Admiral's voice accompanied by the absence of the sight of him makes the advancing pirates stop in their tracks.

Morgan, in a whimpering tone, pathetically calls out, "True it is. It be Admiral's ghost 'ere for 'is revenge after the Ring put 'im down!"

As he touches Tarron, Admiral can feel the pain (caused by Reaver piercing the half-elf) surge through him and then dissipate into Reaver. Immediately afterward, Admiral can feel life force summoned by Reaver move through him into the fallen pirate. As Reaver moves life force through Admiral and spares the dying Tarron, Admiral's mind is flooded by a momentary flashback.
[ +- ] Admiral's Flashback
Just after Morgan broadcasts his insight, the hole through Tarron's back recedes (under Admiral's invisible hands). Blood stops gushing onto deck, the half-elf pirate coughs out loud, and he begins to breath. Yet, he remains unconscious.

Admiral sighs. "I’m not a bloody ghost, Morgan. I’m just invisible." He stands up and shakes himself dry, carelessly splattering those nearby— Jin and Morgan mainly— with seawater. He wishes he could shake off the invisibility too. It’s becoming more of a hindrance than a help at this point. "Now, I understand that the first mate was playing at captain in my absence, but I’m afraid poor Tarron is currently lying face-down on the deck in a pool of his own blood so, unless you’d like to join him, I suggest you all take a moment to think very hard about who your captain is, aye?"

Oct 24, 2023 4:54 am
Tasya notices Jin's sudden halt upon hearing her voice. Knowing him well, she see's him begin to piece together an understanding of the situation. He looks at Tarron's fallen figure, weigh's Admiral's words floating on the air, and those of the pirate Morgan. Tasya recognizes the caution in Jin's eyes, understanding his motive to conceal her presence from the nearby pirates. He makes no visible acknowledgement of Tasya. He only whisper's, "Tas" with a profound sigh of relief.

...

The pirates remain still at Admiral's loud words, unsure how to react. Even the group escorting Sherwood to the brig hold up at the hatch, forgetting to restrain the peg-legged pirate.

A moment later, as if Admiral's wish comes true, he feels the odd feeling effect of the potion recede. Morgan says, "Sailor's shame! 'Tis you Captain Admiral. No ghost be ye!"

After Jin's prompt, the Whisker crews' stunned looks fade from their faces as they snap to work on Admiral's orders.

Sherwood pushes his way through his brig escort and hastily hobbles toward the aft stairs.

He looks up and addresses Admiral. "I could never understand what old Ezber saw in you. But I may be startin'. Your show of resilience is unexpected, but admirable." says the gruff man.

"I concede...Captain Admiral." Sherwood opens his hands and nods his head down in a shallow bow-like gesture. He then looks up and inquires, "But what of yer first mate? Shall he bleed out on deck or will you let me tend to his wounds?"
Oct 28, 2023 12:42 pm
Admiral narrows his eyes but steps back, inviting Sherwood to approach and tend to Tarron’s wound with an impatient wave of his hand. He is silent for a moment, trying to come up with an appropriately scathing response, but no glib retort can properly articulate his hurt and anger. Instead, he asks quietly, "…Was the whole crew in on it? Did you all know what Tarron was planning?"
Oct 28, 2023 11:10 pm
Sherwood limps up the stairs and makes sure Admiral sees his open hands as he passes by. He kneels next to Tarron on his good knee. "Turn 'im over Morgan!" Sherwood barks. Morgan awkwardly responds and does what Sherwood asks and shifts Tarron's limp figure.

As Sherwood examines Tarron he addresses Admiral, "Nay, we knew not what Tarron had planned by openin' up the halfling brew. I reckon he slipped you something else too. 'Cause you were face down and out cold.

He asked us if it be you we wanted as captain, the one who brought the Ring down on us, or him, the one who could lead us to the spoils we deserve. 'Why should we stay marked', he says, 'on the account of Admiral, Ezber's pet?' The crew was reluctant, but he persuaded the lot and delivered you to the agents himself.

Dharzal woke from his drunk and when he found out the news, left the ship after you and Tarron. We haven't seen 'im since."

After another moment of examining the half-elf Sherwood concludes, "This one's wounds cut clear through, but they be amazingly stable already. Bleeding has already stopped. Don't know how, but I think he might see daylight again...be it after a good while of my nursing though."

"Everyone did escape. There was a hidden way out to a side alley." Jin explains to Tasya. He then looks at her solemnly and says, "I’m sorry Tas that we had to leave Stripe. We can only hope that the Rajahadraja’s guards payed no attention to your friend."

Petalwing suddenly becomes visible on Tasya’s shoulder.

"Hi-hi. Safe-safe me too."

"Hello little one. That is good to hear," replies Jin to the sprite. He smiles at Tasya, "well, apparently you have another friend to look after. Or maybe this one looks after you."

Admiral’s elation and relief at the revelation that his crew had not been party to the betrayal is immediately spoiled by the news about Dharzal. "Dharzal is missing? We have to go back for him!" he says, though he knows it isn’t sensible. Jahore is crawling with agents of the Iron Ring and those Rajahadraja people that were after Tasya and Mischa and, for all Admiral knows, it could all be for nothing anyway. Dharzal could be dead already. Only Tarron knows what happened to him. Admiral resolves to ask the half-elf about it as soon as he wakes.

In the meantime, Admiral is anxious to get moving — to Elegy, or back to Jahore, or wherever the wind takes them. Leaving Sherwood to tend to Tarron (and oblivious to Tasya’s sudden appearance on the deck behind him), Admiral bounds down the stairs to supervise the transfer of supplies and to help the ragtag crew of the stolen Iron Ring ship climb across to the Whisker. "On second thoughts, bring all the supplies over. We have a lot of guests so we’ll need all the food and fresh water we can get, I reckon."

In response to Admiral's exclamation about going back to Jahore for Dharzal, Sherwood pulls himself up from his kneel and earnestly looks at the rakasta before saying. "Arr, that orc be a stubborn one, he be. Not a chance he'd be handin' ye over. I reckon if he crossed paths with Tarron on the hunt for ye, Tarron wouldn't have made it back to the Whisker, no siree. Aye, that cook must've tangled himself in some trouble while scroungin' around for ye, mark me words."

He sighs, "But sailin' back to the port? That be a reckless gamble. These circus varlets be fleein' from the law, which we'd be attracting the attention of. Also the cursed Ring might set their sights on our early return, and look to pry the tale from our lips about why we ain't out fulfillin' the duty to them Tarron swore on our behalf."

...

Helleena comes rushing out from below deck toward Tasya. "Tasya!" she exclaims on her way. "It is really you! I didn't believe my own eyes below deck. I'm so happy you found us! And the pirates are saying your ship came with their rightful captain. How?! "

...

While Admiral and Tasya remain engaged in their separate conversations, the Whisker crew works on Admiral's command. They put down two gangways between the ships. Briya leads the slaver ship crew onto the Whisker. Mischa and Taresh lead the pirate crew to the supplies in the smaller ship; the two of them, along with Skeev help the pirates make the transfer.

"This is Petalwing." Tasya introduces the sprite to Jin. "We happened upon each other in the desert, while Mischa and I were escaping the red guard." She goes quiet at the news Stripe had been left behind, but tries to belay her sadness when Helleena rushes toward her. "A fortuitous set of misadventures put Captain Admiral and us on a collision course to both escape our dire situations."

Admiral knows Sherwood is right, though it doesn’t sit well with him. There are far too many people aboard his ship right now to risk all their lives by returning to Jahore. Once he’s got them all safely to Elegy, he can go back for Dharzal. Dharzal’s tough, he reassures himself, He can handle a bit of trouble.

Helleena pauses at Tasya's last statement. "Collision? Maybe not a random one." She looks at Tasya gravely, takes her hand, and turns it upward, shaping Tasya's fingers into a cup. She removes a skin from her belt and pours water into Tasya's cupped hand. "Look. What do you see?" she asks.

After a moment an image takes shape in the small pool of water in Tasya's hand:

When she suspects Tasya is witness to a vision, Helleena says, "What you see is not certain to come to pass. Fate's workings are ever mysterious and often respond to the initiative of its pawns. But it is certain that whatever, whomever is revealed to you is weaved into your future in some way or another."

...

Sherwood and Morgan carry Tarron below deck. After a short while Admiral notices Tasya on deck holding out her hand to another circus member. Jin in near the two. Just as he notices that, Skeev comes up next to him and says, "We got everything loaded up Captain."

"Great work, everyone!" says Admiral, pleased that everything seems to have gone smoothly. He ambles over to the circle of circus performers conversing on the deck. "Ahoy there! Pardon the interruption! It’s Elegy you’re bound for, right? To recover your ship? I think I might have some charts that could be useful…" He fishes around inside his tattered, sun-faded coat and pulls out the charts he found aboard the Iron Ring ship — soggy and illegible thanks to his brief dip in the ocean. He squints at the sodden mass of parchment for a moment and then tosses it over his shoulder. "…Never mind that. I’ve got a pretty good sense of direction anyway. Ready to get under way?"

"It is a scene in the abyss." Tasya tells Helleena, letting the water slowly slip through her fingers. "I am in Hell..."

The Journey To Elegy

The Journey on the Sea of Dread toward Elegy is without incident and takes 4 full days of non-stop sailing.

Briya seems at home on the Whisker and slips seamlessly into the Whisker crew without any pushback from the pirates. On the other hand, the other freed prisoners who attempt to help are initially met with impatience from the pirates. But Admiral, who gives in-depth one-on-one instruction to Skeev during the journey, also invites the slaver-ship crew to learn some of the finer details that they couldn’t have picked up during their crash course on the smaller vessel.

When he gets a chance, Admiral sits with the necklace he found in the Nightmare’s lair along with the journal he found near the necklace:

When the opportunity arises Tasya thanks Admiral for his part in helping her and her companions escape from Jahore.

Later, she spends time with Jin, who is like a brother to her. She thanks him for the cloak and offers it back.

"Hold on to it," he says. "I have an unsettling feeling that there is much more danger to come for us all. Yet, I don’t know exactly what that danger may be. I can’t shake this feeling that you and I have different roles to fulfill and will be separated again. I must believe my grandfather acts on the side of good and there is purpose to all this chaos. If fate makes it so I cannot remain by your side, I'd rather you keep the cloak. It may serve you again. But know that its power wanes with each use. You remember how I used to wear it for the better part of our show, helping all acts go smoothly while remaining unseen by the audience? No longer."
