Dreli Wakes Up

The first thing Dreli notices, before she even thinks to open her eyes, is the taste of dirt.

It is loose, so it doesn’t take much effort to dig herself out and find fresh air again. While brushing herself off, she goes over the last events she remembers in her mind. Her uncle and cousin insisted on escorting her to the other end of town, and suddenly turned on her and attacked—

She froze as it dawned on her: she had woken up in a shallow grave.

It is just after dawn, and the rising sun is starting to dissipate the fog. After wiping her face off on Amadora’s cloak, Dreli climbs out of the hole and quickly looks over her surroundings. There is a shovel on the ground, as well as several familiar markings drawn in the dirt.

They're religious sigils, the sort that she's been around her entire life. The sort that are supposed to ward off demonic influences. Looking closer however, she realizes that other markings have been added on top, almost like accents. The symbols have all been altered in some fundamental way.

Surveying the perimeter of the clearing, Dreli gasps as she notices a body slumped over on the ground. It is her uncle Nagil, a ritual book and dagger at his feet, and several wounds in his chest.

Spitting dirt from her mouth and shaking her head to fling away the dirt in her hair, Dreli brushes at the soil clinging to her like it is alive and trying to devour her. She wipes dirt from her eyes and clambers for the shovel. Once it is in her grasp, she uses it to help support her slender, dirty, and shaking body.

Surveying her surroundings, she spots the prone instigator of her current misfortunate ordeal: Uncle Nagil. Her eyes narrow, as she peers around her looking for his craven accomplice, Nagin. Slowly, attempting to remain as quiet as possible, Dreli approaches the corpse.
OOC:
Does Dreli hear anything in the area around her? As there any signs of where Nagin may have gone? Is there any evidence, that someone else may have been involved with the death of her uncle?

Dreli looks around, but doesn’t see a sign of her cousin anywhere. However, she did notice an abandoned pack near the edge of this clearing.

As she gets closer to Uncle Nagil’s corpse, Dreli gets a better look at the ritual book and dagger, noticing that they have matching symbols upon them. She recognizes it from her childhood: it’s one of the symbols her family worshiped.

Looking over his body, it appears as though he was stabbed in the back… but the wounds look almost like burn marks. There is also a surprising lack of blood, for what seem like deep gashes.

Dreli hears some chirping from the morning birds, but nothing else of note.

For this let's roll a WIL save. As a reminder the target is to roll 1d20 and get equal-to or under the stat, which is 15. There's no risk of harm if you fail for this one, so no need to worry about that.

Dreli scoops up the book with the shovel and shoves it down into the hole she dug herself out of, then cautiously moves over to the pack she has seen at the edge of the clearing. She hesitates to pick up the dagger just yet, what with a the symbols on it and their obvious intended use.

She listens to the sounds of the birds chirping as she continues to look around.

Upon reaching the pack, she opens it and take a quick inventory of its contents.

Rolls

WIL save - (1d20)

(16) = 16

Sep 22, 2023 2:01 am
With that roll Dreli isn't quite sure what may have happened with her uncle. However, she did notice some trampled plants in the direction of the pack. It's possible that someone or something may have ran in that direction not too long ago.

The pack contains the following contents:
- Three day's rations
- A torch
- 14 gold pieces
- Holy Water
- A net
OOC:
Just to give you a better idea of the area, there's dense wood on the perimeter but a few possible paths in/out of this clearing. The trampled grass and pack are near a path on the East side of this area, the grave was in the middle of this whole thing, and there also are paths to the North as well as the West. They look about the same and there aren't any special noises coming from any direction.

Dreli lugs the pack onto one shoulder and slides back over to the corpse again. She crouches and timidly reaches out and touches the dagger. Her mind is still reeling from the shock of awakening in a shallow grave, but instinctively she knows she needs to start moving before someone comes to try to finish the deed of murdering her.
OOC:
Having a general idea of her spatial location relative to the woods from her familial home and in keeping with the premise of wanting to find a city and start a new life, which of the possible paths from the clearing seem most viable? Would Dreli know of cities beyond the Absent Grove and where to find them?

The dagger is spectacularly crafted, but Dreli finds keeping it in her hands difficult. It's not heavy, but holding it makes her incredibly tired.

This is a Holy dagger, which is one of the damage types that can cause you permanent damage. It doesn't hurt to the touch, but while Dreli wields any Holy weapon she loses her STR healing ability. If the dagger stays close to her for a day (in her pack counts), she will need to roll a WIL save or take 1 Fatigue. This would repeat each day she kept it.

Just explaining what the mechanical impacts of taking/using the item would be, choice of what you want to do with it is totally up to you.

OOC:
Dreli actually notices that the layout of the area doesn't match her knowledge of the region. For example, she can see what appear to be mountains in the distance to the North. As far as she is aware, there's no such landmark anywhere between home and the cities on the other side of The Absent Grove. Also now that she's right infront of the path to the East, Dreli realizes the trampled plants are a type she's never seen before.
OOC:
Since sometimes it's not easy to tell what items are being added to inventory and what ones are being momentarily interacted with, whenever Dreli picks up an item to add it to her inventory, lets try to include an OOC line that says something like "+Pack", and then update your character sheet.

At the moment it sounds like you're picking up the pack, unsure about the dagger, and I'm not quite sure what you're thinking for the shovel.

Adding the following:

- shovel
Getting the weird sensation her intuition about the dagger was correct, Dreli moves back over to her grave and tosses both the dagger and the vial of holy water into the hole. She then shovels up a couple scoops of dirt and tosses those in on top to cover the items. Looking over at the ritual symbols and their alterations, the young woman scoops up another shovel full of soil and spreads it over the ritual to obscure it from the view of any one who may follow and attempt to discern its meaning.

Tugging the backpack on properly, Dreli plucks the shovel up again and kicks her uncle's corpse for good measure. 'This is all your fault—you and the rest of the accursed family Harker.' She whispers her frustration directed at the dead man.

Her choices unclear and the surroundings unknown, she sets off to the East (or what she assumes is East).
Sep 23, 2023 11:46 pm
As Dreli heads down the eastward path, she notices more broken branches and trampled plants. Someone ran through here in a hurry, someone who didn't know the area well.

Following the evidence of disturbance, she finds an area that forks in three different directions. She also smells pipe tobacco, and hears some voices talking.

Which path would Dreli like to take, if any?

Path 1: Keep following the trail of trampled plants. The woods seem to get less dense this way.
Path 2: Get closer to the conversation. If this path is taken, roll a DEX save to see if they hear anything.
Path 3: This path will allow you to go around the group having a discussion, but seems to lead down some winding paths. If Dreli goes this way, what is she looking for? What are her current goals?
Sep 24, 2023 8:01 pm
Upon hearing the voices and smelling the scent of the tobacco on the breeze, Dreli doubles her efforts to move quietly and stealthily moves closer so she might hear the conversation. She is mindful of her surroundings and the available cover.

Rolls

DEX save - (1d20)

(4) = 4

Sep 25, 2023 1:49 am
Dreli sneaks closer without being detected, and sees three men sitting on a log. One is smoking from a pipe, while the others have some water. They appear to be taking a short rest.
OOC:
The different colors here indicate different speakers.
"Are you sure we lost them?"
"The Robes like to stick to the main routes."
"How much longer until we reach the trader in the north?"
"Around a day."
"Won't make it before dark."
"No, but if you can hold onto your score, Fenrit is the best chance you have at a fair price."
"Don't say it's stolen though."
"Definitely don't tell them that."
"Right, right. Let's keep moving."

The trio get up, and continue on their way. They don't seem to be paying very much attention at the moment, and Dreli feels as though she could follow them without much difficulty.

Dreli could go in a few different directions from here. Following the trio will not require a roll at this time, but she could also stick to the trail of trampled plants she’s followed until now, go the direction these men came from (the east), or head away from all of those areas towards the denser wood to the south.
OOC:
Feel free to veer away from any of those ideas if you wish, I'm mostly just trying to provide context, not pigeonhole you into a few options.
Sep 25, 2023 10:30 pm
Dreli holds her position from cover until the three bandits have gotten out of sight. She then weighs her options such as they are and decides to continue along her original path with the trampled plants. She wants to put as much distance between herself and the grave site as she can muster.
Sep 26, 2023 12:32 am
Dreli finds that she’s getting better and better at traveling without making much noise, and is able to push forward for a few hours before she realizes she’s not hungry or thirsty at all. She also still has the faint taste of dirt in her mouth.

Around the time a noise distracts her, and she notices a green glow in the distance. It is large, about twice as tall as Dreli, and is lumbering through the woods pushing trees over. A pair of dark robed figures appear to be with it, one on either side.
OOC:
They're still very far away, even with the ruckus being made the glow is the only reason it was spotted.
Sep 26, 2023 8:11 am
Dreli immediately begins looking for the best location to hide in should the trio continue in a direction where they would cross paths. She steps off the path so that her presence is not easily apparent to anyone looking.
Sep 26, 2023 2:26 pm
Dreli eyes a small crevice between a nearby boulder and a hill, and is pretty confident she could squeeze in there to avoid detection. The trio appears to be walking in a straight line, and unless they change course significantly will miss Dreli entirely.

She hears someone shout "SWEEPERS!" somewhere behind her, and suddenly the area fills with echoey whispers of the same word. Dreli is near the base of a hill, and some commotion starts on the other side.
Sep 26, 2023 8:00 pm
Eying the crevice, Dreli heads quickly toward it. She is taken by surprise at the sudden voice and its echoes, but wants to avoid trouble if she can and focuses on hiding in the spot she's sussed out.
Sep 27, 2023 12:30 am
Dreli hears people moving nearby, and will need to hide swiftly to avoid being spotted as they run.

Let's do a DEX save for this. Roll under and Dreli slides into the crevice in time, over and the people coming around will notice the movement. (Or, as always, you have the choice to take a different course of action).
Sep 27, 2023 8:08 am
Dreli tries to reach her hiding spot, but the runners are faster than she.

Rolls

DEX save - (1d20)

(17) = 17

Sep 27, 2023 4:36 pm
As she starts crawling into the spot, a nearby voice shouts "Run you fool!". Dreli turns to see a middle-aged man with an armful of belongings, standing about 15ft away. Others behind him are running to the west, many holding bulky items they didn't have time to pack up properly.

He looks towards the east and shouts, "Clara there's no time! Only what you can hold."
OOC:
It looks as though a medium-sized camp, 20 or so individuals, is quickly clearing out.
Sep 27, 2023 9:34 pm
Dreli swallows hard as the man sees and addresses her. She abandons the idea of hiding in the crevice and runs in the direction that the indiviiduals from the camp are going. They obviously know more about the dangers of these Sweepers more than she and Dreli doesn't want to stick around to find out why.
