First OOC: I trust your judgement on the saves. So far it's been a fun ride, kudos to the Referee!
Wenlan's plan is to sneak outside from the window and run to the north wall. She'll take her backpack and all but she doesn't put on her chainmail to be more quiet and fast.

Also, during her chores and the supper Wenlan tries to see if there is any oil or grease to be found to oil the window shutters to be a little less noisy. If nothing else is available, she'll try to use butter.

Wenlan also tries to steal a loaf of fresh bread.

Thanks, it's my first time GMing so that's great to hear :)
Let's split this into the following saves:

DEX Save: Greasing the shutter (Fail means the escape save is more challenging than if you pass)
DEX Save: Stealing a loaf of bread (Fail means you don't get one, but you're not caught or anything)
DEX Save x2, and a WIL Save: The rest of the escape (Any failures mean you're noticed by someone, somewhere along the way. If the Grease DEX save is a pass though, it will take two failures to get noticed instead of one.)

Great! May there be lots and lots of games to run for you!

On a sidenote if it is indeed your first time, I can tell you I usually run situational things like "finding a loaf of bread", "will the torch die in the wind" etc as Luck rolls regardless of the system. Can't remember how it's written in Cairn but I usually just do 1d6 [or any dice] and tell the player high is good or low is good depending on the system (low obviously for Cairn). That is to say I call Saves only when there is a danger - so if failure doesn't mean being caught I'd use a Luck roll or GM adjudication.

In these sorts of games the Abilities are standardly pretty low so rolling is for dangerous stuff.

This is not to argue, I'm fine with doing a DEX save. Its just an example, you may use it or not. You do you :) Thank you, I'll get back to the game.

Wenlan greases the shutter with some fat she found.

Rolls

Greasing the shutter - (1d20)

(9) = 9

Wenlan thinks she's done a decent job with the window - maybe she can become a window greaser later in life.

She also tries to sneak on loaf of fresh bread from the kitchen.

Rolls

Stealing a loaf of bread - (1d20)

(4) = 4

Wenlan waits for the dark and then gets on with her plan, hoping Mara is asleep.

First she'll crouch out of the window and then she hurries on to the north wall.

Rolls

DEX - (1d20)

(11) = 11

DEX - (1d20)

(19) = 19

WIL - (1d20)

(10) = 10

That's good to keep in mind, there's things about Cairn I like and don't like so far so I may tweak things here and there.

Ouch on the rolls, at least Wenlan will have bread in prison (joking it's not that bad.... yet)
Wenlan gets her gear ready, including a nice loaf of fresh bread, and tosses it out the window first. She follows with herself next, but the shutters make enough noise that Mara begin to stir.

Hurrying toward the north wall, she looks back and notices Mara is looking out her own window for a moment before disappearing. Wenlan is pretty sure that she's been spotted but she continues to the north wall.

Tanya sees Wenlan and gives a quick wave, before hollering "Hurry, they're coming!" and squeezing through a gap in the fence. Several footsteps are approaching from behind, but Wenlan should have time to squeeze through before they reach her.

Please do a DEX save. Wenlan will get through either way, but if it's a fail she might need to drop something in the process.

Wenlan tries to squeeze through the fence and follow Tanya.

Rolls

Dexterity Save - (1d20)

(6) = 6

Wenlan squeezes tight, and even manages to get her whole pack through the gap without issue. Those in pursuit are too big to fit, so Elara and Wenlan have a few moments to spare before they make their way around through one of the main entrances. The woods are about 50 feet away.

"The Order avoid the woods at night, but they will come after us full force in the morning. Any thoughts?"
Nov 10, 2023 4:23 am
Just run for the woods, we don't have time to spend to do clever planning!
Nov 10, 2023 6:13 pm
The pair of you run quickly into the woods, but the visibility is poor and you can hear guards coming. The whole force wouldn't go in, but a couple brave ones might try to hunt you down if they spot you.

Please roll 2 DEX saves to see how you fare. If you lose them, they will give up fairly quickly. There is also risk of tripping or falling as it is quite dark and you're both moving hastily.

Rolls

Tanya running through woods 1 (DEX 14) - (1d20)

(10) = 10

Tanya running through woods 2 (DEX 14) - (1d20)

(2) = 2

Wenlan running

Rolls

Dexterity - (1d20)

(18) = 18

Dexterity - (1d20)

(10) = 10

Tanya manages to deftly make her way through the woods, but Wenlan notices herself starting to fall behind. She tries to push harder and starts to bridge the gap for a moment before falling flat on her face after tripping on a root.

Tanya turns around when she hears the thud, and sees Wenlan standing up right as a guard closes in on her. Tanya quickly yells "Behind you!" as a warning.
OOC:
This isn't a combat situation yet, but Wenlan is close enough to get an attack off if she so chooses (which would be a STR save). Or she can attempt to get away (which would be a DEX save). Or anything else she feels like doing.
Nov 13, 2023 4:28 am
Wenlan is tired of being pushed around so she tries to cut the guard's hamstring to try to stop them following.
OOC:
How is the guard armed and does he/she look like they are wearing armor? You said there's only one so the others are not yet here? I'll rewind if I got the wrong impression about the situtation.

If we go into combat do I just roll my damage? What would the ST check be for?
Nov 13, 2023 2:58 pm
OOC:
The guard appears to have a mace at his side, but isn't running with it in his hands. For armor they're just wearing a leather shirt, it's a younger guy perhaps eager to prove himself, but not as decorated as Galen (the person who brought you to Mara's place) was.

Cairn's combat has you roll a weapon die against the target's HP, which isn't health but "Hit Protection" and reflects how hard you are to hit. If the HP is reduced to zero, you begin taking STR damage and when STR is 0 your character dies. (Kind of the short version, I haven't really done a lot of combat in Cairn to be honest but I'm pretty sure that's it.

For now let's just do a STR save to see if Wenlan succeeds at cutting the hamstring, if she succeeds he'll go down and you can decide where to go from there. If it's a failure we can begin combat.
Please roll a STR save for the attempt to sever the guard's hamstring.

Wenlan strikes

Rolls

Strenght - (1d20)

(7) = 7

Nov 15, 2023 2:35 pm
Channeling her rage at this entire situation, Wenlan grabs her sword and slices the guards leg. He crumbles to the ground with a yell of great pain and doesn't seem able to stand on it any longer.

"Come on, this way!" Tanya calls from further up ahead.
Nov 18, 2023 7:20 pm
Wenlan feels very reliefed but adrenaline still pumping she launches after Tanya, not looking back.
Nov 18, 2023 9:50 pm
Tanya and Wenlan run deeper into the woods for a while. Convinced they've lost any tail, they slow to a brisk walk but continue away from Valleyview.

"I wasn't sure about you but that was badass back there. I don't trust these woods or those guards, I think we should try to go through the night to get a decent lead."
Nov 19, 2023 3:52 am
Whoah.... I got a lucky strike there. You are right, we should push on so we can get a lead. Are you all right?
