Day 1 - The Wilbur Theater

Oct 3, 2023 2:08 pm
Fall of 1927. One year after the death of Harry Houdini and magic shows are still at the height of popularity. Boston is the home to one Memphis the Great, one of the most renowned magicians in the world, touring all five continents and having performed for royalty. He has disappeared six months ago, rumors that he was on one of his adventures to discover new tricks from around the world. But you are here to see Memphis' former protege, Harold Hawkings. He is playing the Wilbur Theater on Tremont Street, a 1914 building in the colonial style.

As you arrive you see his name on the marquee. Inside, there is an excited buzz in the foyer as the crowds gather for this evening’s performance, although you notice that seats are still available at the rear of the orchestra pit and throughout the balcony. You have excellent seats in row B. Ingrid Schwartz, daughter of Memphis the Great and fiancée to Harold Hawkings, sits in the direct middle seat in row B.

An acrobatic troupe opens the proceedings. Against a plain red backcloth, they perform feats of juggling and balancing, escalating the difficulty by replacing their batons first with knives, then with flaming torches. The act climaxes with a dramatic leap to complete a three-tiered human pyramid. There is a short musical intermission after this act and before Harold Hawkings is set to take the stage.

Idella Brown has taken time to spiffy up her look only slightly more than normal as she sits between her friend, Ingrid, and her brother John. She's a short and energetic woman wearing a pressed white shirt and tie tucked into well trimmed riding pants and tall well-worn brown boots. Her hair is nearly tucked up into a bun and her eyes are transfixed on the performance.

She plays right into the act with plenty of ooh's and aah's given at just the right time as balls, knives, fire, and people alternatively fly through the air. As the curtains close on the first act, she let's out a whoop and the loudest applause in the house.

She elbows her brother. "Not quite like real flying but these guys ain't half bad are they?"

She then leans over to Ingrid as the music begins. "So how are things? The fiancé seems to be doing well. Or at least his show does."
Oct 4, 2023 5:49 am
The young journalist sits straight, proper posture always impressed upon her as a child. She quite enjoys the acts. Yuna wears smart-looking, western-style clothing and her hair is tied into a tight bun atop her head. Though not always worn, at this distance and for the show she wears thin-rimmed spectacles. So pulled in by the show is she, her notepad sits balanced on her knee with only a few short notes jotted down - mostly remarks on how the opening acts might reflect the protégé's own performance.

She was not here as a reviewer, of course, but she was curious about the Hawkins performance from a research perspective. It could be assumed his act may bear similarities to those of Memphis the Great, and give her a glimpse into the man before meeting Pickering in the morning.

She sits just a bit behind the magician's fiance and makes a point of listening to what is being said without being obvious about it.

Barrington Van Ness is glad he could get such good seats for the show. He is himself a stage magician, and is an acquaintance of Harold Hawkins. Barrington and Harold are friendly, have shared drinks, and food, and ideas for tricks in the past. But with rumours of something changed, something strange, about Hawkins - with Harold having missed the recent weekly magician's meeting - Barrington wants to see up close what might be going on with Hawkins. And for that he's got a perfect seat this evening.

Barrington is a well-kept, charismatic, handsome man - so handsome, indeed, that frequent side-glances often come his way, from people of all genders. He enjoys the acrobatic troupe, admiring both their dexterity and their show craft, and chats easily with his seat neighbours during intermission.

John has little interest in a 'magic show', but Idella's friend had offered tickets and she seemed excited to go. He'd rushed a little that afternoon, making sure the post show tune up on Idella's plane was complete. It didn't pay to leave an engine overnight without attention.

Barely noticing the often employed elbow from Idella, "No, sis, they ain't half bad?"

John had watched the performance and it was enjoyable, but he was more interested in the practical aspects. Spotting how the jugglers made eye contact before passing objects to the others and understanding the timing of their formations. He was used to watching Idella fly within feet of another plane at 70 miles an hour, it would take more than a flaming knife to impress him.

Unbeknownst to himself, Charles has a similar mind to John, watching as he was for the practiced steps and cover ups that would fool the audience. This was his domain, after all, and the purpose of his visit to this theatre tonight. Still, he made sure not to make himself an unlikable spectator, and so cheered and clapped appropriately throughout.

"They are marvelous!" he even adds, more to himself, but the strangers to the right and left of him were more than welcome to respond if they liked.

As the act comes to a close, and the stage is being set for what he had really come to observe, the man fiddles with his glasses; breathing hot air over the glass and rubbing it into his shirt to clean them. All the better to see the misdirects soon to be observed. That is, of course, if they really were misdirects. His employer was sure that they must be, but a man like C.S Wilde approached things with a more open mind, so to speak.

Ingrid Schwartz
Ingrid looks slightly flustered about the first statement, so she latches onto the second one and answers that instead. "Oh Harold's show is doing fine! He was worried when he first split from Memphis, but it hasn't been so bad. I think he is a little impatient his fame hasn't blossomed as quickly as he had hoped, but it's only been a year. Sometimes these things take time. The right trick or act in the right place at the right time. Sometimes you need a little bit of luck."

After the short musical interlude concludes, the curtains part to reveal Harold Hawkings, elegant in white tie and tails. Behind him, the stage is completely bare; even the building’s brick walls are visible. Hawkings steps through the open curtains, which then close behind him, and with a brief wave of his hands, he begins a silent billiard ball manipulation routine. He holds the ball between two fingers, transferring it up and down his spread fingers, slowly at first and then with incredible speed. The ball defies gravity for a few seconds, rolling along the underside of his hand. It changes color. A second ball appears. The balls "jump" invisibly from hand to hand. A third ball appears, and then a fourth. Finally, Hawkings catches a top hat thrown from the wings, drops the four balls into it, casually turning it over and dropping it on his head. As he takes applause and steps back, the curtains part behind him. The entire stage is now draped in an exotic arrangement of colorful fabrics evoking an Arabian palace, with cabinets and couches arranged in an arc facing the audience. This effect is achieved through conventional theatrical stagecraft and painstaking rehearsal, but it is impressive, nonetheless.

Harold Hawkings
"Now for the next part of my act, I will need two volunteers from the audience." Harold Hawkings approaches the front of the stage and peers out in dramatic fashion, one hand shading his eyes from the stage lights up above.
OOC:
Any investigators interested in volunteering make Luck checks. The two lowest results will be selected.
Oct 5, 2023 11:12 am
Barrington is tempted – he doesn't often take the role of volunteer in front of an audience like this, and he's curious to be reminded how it feels. And also maybe to get some insights into Harold's trick if it's a new one. And, yeah, he also enjoys standing on stage and getting all that attention... But it feels a bit unfair to the audience to do this, given he himself is a stage magician.

So Barrington decides he'll only volunteer if Harold doesn't manage to find two other people to take on that role.

John simply shakes his head and mumbles to himself, "Not a chance."

Charles raises a rattling hand; with a little extra shake added in for effect. An old man’s rattling body to hide a keen eye and keener mind. From the stage, Charles would surely have a better look at the workings of the trick, such as they are!

"Ahhhh" Idella let's the indication of an idea roll off of her lips. "Let's see up close how he's doing then. Nothing quite like being in the thick of it." Idella raises her and as straight and high as she possibly can without coming up out of her seat.

Harold Hawkings
Harold Hawkings sees Idella's hand shoot up and selects her, waving her for come on to the stage. "Now for a gentleman," he says as he scans the audience. He seems about to pick one or two, but changes his mind, eventually settling on an elderly gentleman sitting not too far from Idella. "You, sir, look like a man who has seen much. Come up, if you please."

Once his two volunteers are on the stage, he gives a brief tour, explaining that he got such and such an item from a Chinese merchant in Shanghai, the next one from a bazaar in Morocco, this prop from a fakir in India. When Hawkings reaches for a low, deep box on wheels, he "notices" a vase has been knocked from its surface, and flowers trampled on the floor. Seemingly outraged, he calls for his maid, a worried-looking assistant in a domestic uniform, whom he berates loudly. As punishment, he opens the box and makes her lie in it before closing the lid. Her hands protrude from one end of the box, and Hawkings asks Mr. Wilde to take hold of them; the woman’s ankles protrude from the other end, and the magician asks Idella to grasp them firmly. Then he performs the "sawing a lady in half " illusion, splitting the cabinet in two. He peeks inside the separated ends, visibly blanches, and then moves the two parts so they are cleanly separated. Hawkings then relents, talking about how difficult it is to find good staff and how sorry he is to part with them. He restores the box and produces the maid, unharmed and forgiven. As he thanks Charles and Idella, he gathers up the spilled flowers, folds them into nothing, and produces a fresh bunch for Idella.

Everyone give me a Spot Hidden roll, hard for those in the audience, normal for the two volunteers on stage.

A little disappointed, more than she'd care to admit, that she wasn't chosen, Yuna watches the illusion intently.

John has a difficult time staying focused on the main act as it seems like much of the 'standard' fair for these sort of things.

Idella dutifully performs her assigned role in the act while trying to keep an eye on Harold all the time. She wants to know more about him. However it seems this time that she's too far into the act and before she catches anything, she's already being handed a small bunch of fresh flowers and shewed from the stage.

Charles plays the doddering audience stooge on stage; taken in by the tricks and playing his part of invigilator precisely.

Yes, yes. Everything seems in order up here… is the part these stage magicians had people like him play. The authoritative outsider, green-lighting the slight.

But Charles was watching intently…

The program continues with various illusions and some light comedy. The maid from the first trick returns as his assistant, this time dressed in a fashionable evening gown. Hawkings performs confidently but unremarkably until his penultimate trick.

Two intricately decorated and large upright wooden cabinets are now wheeled on stage. There is enough clearance underneath each box to show that no trapdoor could be used without the audience spotting it. Each has a door, positioned to face opposite wings of the stage. As each door is opened, a dim, eerie glow emanates from the cabinets’ interiors.
OOC:
Regular Spot Hidden roll from everyone please.

Hawkings tells a story about the demands of being on long tours and how much he misses his family while abroad. He talks about doing a show every night and the extended travel time to return home from cultured European capitals and the bustling streets of Morocco and Cairo. He jokes about the tedious pastimes required during long sea voyages and the effect that air travel has on his digestion. Then, he explains he has invented a way to return home, instantly, to visit the family and pick up any small items he has forgotten. Hawkings pats one cabinet and walks to the edge of the stage, explaining that all he has to do is to leave one cabinet at home and take the other on tour.

"Then," he declares, "I simply have to do this!" Hawkings runs at one cabinet, leaps, and emerges from the other, with no visible means of traversing the space between. There is clearly not enough of a delay for any subterfuge such as running under the stage.

Idella finds her way back to her seat as the applause for the magician dies down. His further tricks don't seem more interesting then the act that came at the beginning and without much excitement, her attention begins to wane... until the final act where something seems different...
