Charles eyes the man as he leaves the stage, noticing how harried and worn out he looked up close.

And then the story of being on the road is told, and it quietens something in Charles’ mind for a moment. He supposed that it fit together.

Charles joins the others around him in a gasp as the man passes through space in an instant. He almost climbs to his feet, but his mind is working overtime to piece it together.

Harold Hawkings
Moving to his final trick, Hawkings' long-suffering assistant returns to the stage. Hawkings talks about how hard she has to work to satisfy him and the demands of their intense tour schedule. When he asked her what she wanted for her birthday, she claimed she wanted to relax and get away from it all. So, he devised a little treat for her.

The assistant lies upon a table and slowly, with no covering or other such artifices, rises to float in the air above Hawkings’ head. He passes a large hoop across his assistant’s body, then stands aside to take applause.

Still contemplating the meaning of Egyptian-style markings on the boxes, Idella misses all of Harold's explanation leading to the final performance. When the assistant raises into the air, Idella snaps back to attention, although unable to concentrate on the performance itself.

Idella watches the finale of the night and gives applause dutifully. Her mind is elsewhere and she can't quite figure where.

Charles feels very self-satisfied, now that he had cracked the trick, and knew that he would be paid handsomely by his employer for pulling this act apart so completely.

A Gate Box…

Charles’ mind spun as he tried to figure out where a man like this may have sourced such an artifact.

It was real magic, but surely beyond the knowledge, or pay packet, of a stage performer such as this.

Still, the act was yet to finish, and Charles wanted to ensure that he had all the details when he made his report, so he continued to watch; heart thumping and a happy grin set on his old face.

"Oh my, how remarkable!" Yuna says, studying the trick closely. She remembers her reason for being there and quickly jots some notes down, but struggles to pull her attention away from the show.

Harold Hawkings
As Harold Hawkings takes his bow, a series of high metallic snapping sounds can be heard and the assistant falls out of the air and hits the ground, headfirst. Stagehands rush in from the wings to tend to the assistant and, before the curtain can close, you see blood spilling from a nasty-looking head wound. Ingrid gasps and covers in her mouth in horror.

In a moment, the theater’s manager comes out in front of the curtain and awkwardly announces (to a few gasps) that there has been a terrible accident and that the show is concluded for the evening. Before he turns to leave, he asks if there is a doctor in the house, and would they come to the stage? After a minute, the audience begins filing out, guided by anxious-looking usherettes.

Ingrid Schwartz
Ingrid turns to Idella and John and says, "Oh my heavens, what a nightmare. I'm terribly sorry for leaving you like this but I must see Harold. If you stay here I won't be long. Otherwise I will call you tomorrow and try to arrange something to make up for this awful business." She then rushes backstage among the confusion going on all around.

Idella gasps loudly as the accident occurs. Shock and confusion kick her into flight mode and not the type that caused her to run. She nods to Ingrid as she hurries backstage and turns to her brother speaking barely loud enough to be heard over the loud panic in the room.

"Something isn't right here. We've got to check it out."

Barrington continues to be amazed at the magic he's seeing performed in front of him - this is new. Harold has not shown him these tricks before. Something IS different here. And Barrington is baffled. He really has no idea how Harold is managing to make such illusions!

As the assistant falls and hits her head, Barrington is as shocked as everyone else in the audience - he has seen many head wounds in his time working in the medical corps during the Great War.

After the theater manager asks whether there is a doctor in the house, Barrington rises from his seat and makes his way quickly to the front of the stage. He approaches the manager and offers his services to attend the injured assistant.

"I served in the medical corps in the Great War - I'm not a doctor, but treated many awful injuries on the front. That looked like a bad head wound, and timely treatment may be of the essence. If she isn't already being attended, please get me to her as quickly as possible!"

And Barrington holds up his stethoscope - a gift from his colleagues in the corps - treating it as a badge of his competence in this matter.

John hurries after Idella as she makes her way towards the stage.

Yuna's jaw drops as the accident occurs. She quickly gathers her things and goes fully into reporter mode - she was here by invitation, after all, and if Pickering wanted her looking into Memphis the Great, maybe that starts here.

She quietly stands, takes up her notepad and pencil, then follows the daughter and those that chased her behind the stage, holding back just far enough not to be in the way or draw attention to herself, but close enough to try and gather what was going on.

Charles grumbles something about shoddy safety standards as he files out of his row. It was a small mercy that the event had occurred near the end of the act, and Charles was able to conduct his work mostly undisturbed.

The regrettable injury aside, Charles thought a decent night’s work, and so shuffled his way to the foyer with much of the crowd.

"Yes, yes! Quite dreadful!" he mutters back to some concerned passersby as they talk to anyone and everyone about what had transpired.

He thinks then to wait on the medics out front to see what further events transpired around this stage magician tonight!

Barrington treats the assistant, and she seems to be doing as well as can be expected. He waits with her, in case her condition suddenly changes for the worst, while the stage manager organises an ambulance to take her to a hospital.

When the ambulance crew arrive, Barrington gives them a quick briefing on the assistant's condition, leaves his name and contact details with them, and leaves them to get on with their job.

He has to talk with Harold about his new tricks. How in hell was he able to do those things? But also - did Harold have any idea his trick was likely to be risky for his assistant like that? If so, Barrington has some choice words to share with him about that.

With those thoughts, Barrington heads backstage, looking to find Harold in his dressing room.
