Any map guide for tactical game?

Greetings, I am new to Gamersplane and I don't know much about programming and coding. So, I was wondering how you exactly run a tactical combat game with maps? Like, for example, Pathfinder and D&D 5e? Do you post map with tokens and then the players download them and update and reupload them or do you use grid and note the grid for specific position? I would love to see a guide for that.

I don't use them much but I think most people use on the fly battlemaps from this guide

They work very well though I guess there's a little bit of "programming thinking" behind it. Still very easy to use

With tokens, custom maps, damage counts, and overlays for status effects and such, it's possible to run quite complicated battles.

Most players just use grid coordinates for their turns (e.g. Nigel will move to H3 and attack I2).

I've also had DMs use Google slides, or just Roll20 where they post the link and people can move themselves around.

Downsides with slides players can move everything so can potentially see more than they should (I had a player just remove all the boxes I had placed to cover up the map, revealing the entire thing, and not even put them back)

Downside with Roll20 everyone needs an account/phones don't necessarily play well with it.

Here's a character sheet you can include in your games with helpers for overlays and token generation.

It's available from your game's advanced rules definitions.

That's why I use Gimp to create a version of the image with everything already blacked out and set it as the background for the slide. Then I edit it to reveal more as the players explore and just keep replacing the background image in the slide.

I have been using Tableplop due to it's simple design. It requires an account but is free, mobile friendly, has fog of war, can hide tokens or layers, from players, etc

As imgur no longer works with OtFBM (and I can't get imagebam to work with it either), what is everyone else using for tactical maps? Ordinarily, I would do TotM, but with Villains & Vigilantes, tactical maps are practically a must.

EDIT: Okay, got the map to come up using imgbb but apparently the grid isn't consistent in size. Is there a way to compensate?

From a players perspective, I have enjoyed tabletop and find it easy to use.

I'm having no luck with imgur and I am now using azure instead.

If the grid size is off, what I recommend is figuring out how many squares the image is wide, assuming the edge of the grid is the edge of the image as opposed to having some frills on the end, and then opening the image in paint and then multiplying the number of squares wide by 40 and having that be the new image width when you edit the image size using paint. After you upload that version of the image, you shouldn't need to adjust the grid size at all using on the fly battle maps
