5. The Wood of Sharp Teeth

Food, rest, a trek back to the Friendly Arm Inn, then more food and more rest! While the party remains vigilant for danger, both on the road and even at the Inn, they enjoy a good couple days of peace and recovery before eventually arriving at the Cloakwood...
OOC:
The party gets well-rested! Long rest (or two) completed, all resources back, etc. If there's anything you would actually do at the Friendly Arm Inn, go ahead and post that here in this thread.

Otherwise, the story continues here...

"Eat and drink both," Aiwë replies, her voice low and soothing with an elvish lilt. "I'm not sure if the Blood do it here, but in Icewind Dale we can't afford to let the nutrition and warmth go to waste. Most of the time it's saved for the children, and otherwise is considered an honour. What's left is used in cooking." Her eyes are closed with an easy smile and her hands continue to move rhythmically.

"Ada and Grandpa found out the hard way that too much blood makes them sick, so I'm not surprised it isn't common practice. Thankfully my grandmother granted me the stomach. Between the two of us it isn't much honour, but you can have your fill from our next hunt if it interests you."

"Lord Silvershield," Aiwë calls politely as most of the party funnels off to bed at the Friendly Arm. "That cane won't do if you're to be a traveller now. Come sit for a moment, and let me fit you?"

Upon hearing Aiwe’s request, I too try to lend my modest carpentry skills to help while I formulate a response to my lady friend.

After helping Aiwe with the leg for alduous I set about writing a letter. Once completed I find the innkeeper and send it off to Candlekeep.

Koveras nods hesitantly. "Is the blood of one animal preferable over another? I imagine elk blood's better than... I don't know... frog blood?"
Nov 7, 2023 12:49 am
Aldous raises an eyebrow. "Fit me? You're not going to stuff me into that sling again, are you?" He chuckles at the memory. "Not that I didn't appreciate it, but it's hardly the most comfortable way to travel."
Nov 7, 2023 1:19 am
Aiwë chuckles internally, but outward nothing changes. "We don't have many frogs in the Dale but I don't know they have much blood in them. Otherwise, it's like all other meat in that the taste differs, and everyone has their preference. Elk is what is hunted most, but we also hunt moose, bear, yeti..."

Aiwë shakes her head. The boy doesn't even have the sense to be embarrassed. But would she? Probably not.

"No, I have this leg for you. I had Sheemish make it since I was pretty confident we'd be dragging you out of something." She pulls the leg out of her pack. "I just have to fit it to you. Oh—thank you, Runeson!" She accepts the tools gratefully.

Aldous actually brightens at the sight of the thing. "For me? Why, that's so considerate of you, thinking ahead like that. Let's try it on!"

Ah. She is going to have to be blunt with him.

Aiwë gestures to a chair for Aldous to sit on, then kneels to help him with the leg.

"Aldous," she looks him in the eye as she pauses, "Stella doesn't need you to protect her. Do you know that?"

The young Silvershield raises an eyebrow. "Well, seeing as she's the one who keeps saving me I'd say you're right." He holds up a finger. "But even a hero can be felled by a stray arrow, and- Huh. That fits rather nicely, doesn't it?"

Aldous takes a couple of tentative steps. "What a strange sensation, supporting myself on something I can't really feel... But anyway! Another pair of eyes to spot danger can't hurt, can it?"
Nov 11, 2023 10:00 pm
Was he this dense on purpose?
"Absolutely, I'm glad to have another set of eyes, and I like you." She pauses. "Oh that does fit nice. Sheemish does good work."

After watching him test his steps for a while Aiwë continues. "If you're going to travel with us, you have to understand there's a strategy to this work, a way that things are done. It's important to our survival, and if you let your desperation to prove yourself useful to her rule your decision making, you're going to prove the opposite."

"Of course!" Aldous nods along to Aiwe's words. "That's a very reasonable supposition. Naturally I wouldn't want to get underfoot..." He gives the prosthetic leg a little shake for emphasis. "I think we can reach a little understanding."

By this point the two have wandered a short distance from the group...

Shelur blinks at him, and something bubbles up in her stomach. Her face is eerily void of emotion for the energetic bard.

"Did you hear what you just said?" She replies quietly. "You will behave safely if? If nothing."
Nov 12, 2023 12:41 am
Aldous' prosthetic gives way beneath him and he stumbles into Aiwe, clinging to her for support.

He readjusts the leg and tests his weight on it.

Aiwë catches the noble, then sits him firmly on the ground. She gets down on one knee and leans her arms on it, looking him sharply in the eye.

Seated on the ground, Aldous rubs his temples.
