Beruga Going Down

Beruga sighed again as she ran a brush through her fur, again. The lowland heat was making her shed even more than usuall and a naggling dread of going bald kept teasing here. Luckily she seemed to be loosing 80% of the inner fur and only 50% of her longer outer fur. Still the daily ritual was becoming tiring. At home you helped each other with this. Another sigh.

The high mountains were long gone and Beruga had seen several new types of people. Her current camp had a nice view of a small village. She knew it was built by people, the question was what kind and would they recognize her as people. Some seemed to think you had to be bald to be true people. Still she had come down for a reason and sitting here watching the village wake up was not it.

Beruga lowered her nose to the ground once more and sniffed, more to procrastinate than to catch a scent. She knew that the person she had been following was right here in the village before her. She just couldn't fathom what a visiting hiker would want with all of the poisonous mushrooms that had been freshly picked along the trail.

Perhaps her younger self would have given a stranger the benefit of the doubt and approached immediately to intervene, assuming they didn't know what they were about to eat. But now her daughter had to come first. Always. And she had heard terrifying stories of how some bald men could be cruel and deceptive. Still, the few that she had encountered didn't behave in any such way, and there was a good chance someone could use her help. It was time to make her presence known. She paced forward a few steps and called out a greeting in her native tongue.

As the chirp pierces the morning air Beruga sees some motion down below. Focusing she determines the inhabitants as halflings. Which kind she can not yet say... Duende, Hin, Gnome, or some of the smaller beast folk? Soon a group break out from the village and heads Beruga's way. As they get nearer she realizes with a bit of a shock they are little bugs. Or rather bugkin? They walk on 2 or 4 legs with their middle limbs alternately acting as arms. The upper arms are smaller and more delicate. Antennae move as they advance and their large compound eyes are set wide on their rounded faces.

Soon the group of 5 stops several yards away looking up at the large furry foreigner. One of them steps forwards and gives a slight bow while spreading their upper arms wide. The other watch cautiously with weapons in hand but not held in a threatening manner. Greetings? You speak?

The other bugs twitch and more clicks and whistiling hums can be heard. The local language?

There is a smal stream that is quite clean just to the west of our village.
You will excuse us but you are quite lagre and our village is small, not built for one of your statuer. What brings one such as you to our lands? We have heard tales of people likeyou but not seenany in a great many years.

Not wanting to immediately divulge her knowledge of the poisonous mushrooms would they even be poisonous to these creatures?, Beruga decides to play dumb. I confess, I have been lost for days on end. I had set out from my home, hoping to gather food for the winter, but must have turned myself around. Last night I caught the distant scent of another traveller, which led me here. Now, if you will pardon me, I must have a drink before continuing this conversation.

Beruga bounds to the west and laps up water from the river with more excitement than necessary before returning back to the greeting party with a big smile on her face.

We welcome you.
Our names are unprounaouncalbe by the other races, but you may call me Speaker.

You say you followed the traces of another traveler that came this way?
They did not make themselves known to us. They must have moved on. Or perhaps you followed one or out hunting teams retuining from their rovings.

But that is not a large matter. We have heard the hight moutains are harsh lands. If you wish to gather foods a few of our hunter can show you fields where the herd beast feed and areas where wild plants can be harvested.
Speaker pays attention to you the entire time by the other seem to be taking turns watching you, and the surrounding area with vigilance. Occasional quiet burst of their speech can be heard occasionally.

I would love to meet a hunter of your village! Of course, my kind has not acquired a taste for game, but I'm sure they could teach me much about the local flora! Beruga then thinks for a moment and asks: Are you not hunters yourselves? Sorry to pry, I assumed that was what your weapons are for.

Following Speaker's lead, Beruga uses her powerful nose to try to sense if the scent of poisonous mushrooms is close.

Yes the others are hunters. I am the "Speaker" Looking your large form over he asks You . . . . do not hunt? Or eat mmeat? Do you farm then. We can show you much of the area. I assume your food stuffs mostly grow in daylight?

With a guesture for you to follow the Speaker begins to move to cirle the village. As you move Speaker points out the plants and animals, often confering with the other bugkin. He seems to be asking your knowledge of each as much as explaining their own knowledge. You note that he talks about plants that certain animals eat and never mentions what they eat themselves.

Beruga sniffs the air and catches a hint of the mushmoom wafting up from the village.

Beruga stiffens and jumps to her hind legs. It's time to push for some answers. Do you smell that? I sense a toxic stench! Hard to tell where it is coming from though... Do you have any idea what it could be?

Beruga focuses on Speaker's reaction to her outburst, as well as the hunters in the corner of her eye. Do they appear defensive? Are they genuinely curious?

Speaker waves their antennae for a moment I am unsure what you are commenting on. I know we "smell" different than you do. I detect traces of our crops, the processing of plant and animal flesh for food and crafting but do not detect any poisons. I could bring you some of the crops we grow and materials we graft wish. You can identify then if any have the poisonous scent. I would not want to harm you accidentally.

With a bit of conversation in their language one of the hunter rushes off to the village retuning a few minutes later with several parcels. Wood, bone, meat, water, a wine or other alcoholic liquid, and a basket filled with a variety of fungi, one of which carried the traces of toxins you were tracking.
Oct 27, 2023 6:09 am
Beruga gently prods the poisonous fungi with the tip of her nose. You eat this? Quite fascinating. It is lethal to our kind, and we often have to warn foreigners lest they poison themselves. But this one- gesturing to another fungi -is an absolute delicacy where I live! And is this (alcohal) some sort of crafting material? Surely it is much too potent to be a drink!

Beruga is also sure to get a good whiff of all the parcels, particularly the meat and bone, which she will try to identify.

Oh yes, we have trouble growing these in the caves. The bulk of our diet is mushroom and these are considered a delicacy. Meats and other plants are used primarily for seasonings.

You chat for a bit and a pair of hunters takes over guiding you through the area with Speaker helping to translate when the hunters have difficulty. The bugkin seem self sufficient and other than paying for wild mushroom delicacies and some metal or an occasional trade with wanderers like yourself do not have many dealings with outsiders.

Mindful that you said you were hunting or working to support your family Speaker direct you to the south east where there are ruins. There is a tower our hunter use to weather heavy storm when they are traveling far in that direction. To the south of the tower another half day are the remnants of a city from before the Shattering. Though we have little use for the things found there I understand that many find them interesting and will pay for items recovered that are from the Dawn Age.
Oct 30, 2023 12:02 pm
The meat has been cut to a handy size for the smaller bugkin hands and the bone is an indeterminate piece about 1/2 inch wide and 3 inches long so it must be from a larger animal. Beyond thay neither reveal much about their origin.
Oct 31, 2023 7:22 am
Beruga's eyes widen at the mention of the Shattering. Growing up, she had only heard of this monumental event through folklore. A lullaby that her mother would sing to her. Ancient battered relics of the Dawn War that no longer served a functional purpose. Stories of crimson floods that were said to run from the blood of the slain Deity.

To her people with a 7-year average lifespan and little in the way of written history, the Shattering may as well have predated the mountains themselves. But that was not the case with everyone. Less than one month ago, Beruga had taken a contract to escort a stocky, old, bald mountaineer to the top of Grujin's Pass. Her companion was slow and navigated the terrain with difficulty. Beruga worried for his safety, since on the other side of Grujin's pass lies a Realmic Border that is especially susceptible to harsh storms. For days, Beruga would voice her concern and he would reassure her that he knew what he was doing. Only on the last day, when they parted ways at the pass, did he reveal the reason for his journey.

His name was Theodore Grujin, and as a young man he himself fought in the final battles of the Dawn War. Back then, an army of abominations brought forth by the elemental Titan Ahonai threatened to swarm into the land from the north, He and his uncle, Syvas Grujin, led a small legion to defend the mountain pass for as long as possible. It was a suicide mission, but for 24 hours they prevailed. Exhausted and bloodied, Theodore and his uncle stood petrified as the stony face of Ahonai pierced the thick clouds, gazing straight at them from hundreds of feet up. Theodore ran without a second thought. A minute later, strong tremors made him lose his footing. He fell and turned around to see his uncle Syvas, still standing strong on the mountain pass. Ahonai was poised above Syvas preparing to crush him like a bug. It was then that the Shattering reached their corner of the world. A blinding wall of lightning was the last thing he remembered before waking up days later in a dried river bed, miles from the pass.

As the new age of Strife commenced, Syvas' final resting place was commemorated with the name Grujin's Pass to commemorate his stand-off with the Dawn Age Titan.

Beruga had become so enchanted by the old man's story over the next several weeks that when Speaker described the city to the south, she knew she couldn't resist exploring. Her eyes light up and she asks Speaker: How long is the journey to this tower? If I can get there by nightfall, I must be on my way!
Oct 31, 2023 4:36 pm
[ +- ] beastfolk aging
Speaker gives detailed directions to the tower, it should be reachable by Beruga well before sunset as with her size and familiarity of traveling over rough terrain she can cover ground much better than a bugkin hunter. One of the hunters how knows the common language better than most offers to accompany and gude Beruga for as long as possible. Speaker explains the hunters can move at great speed when needed and he will simply hunt on his way back making the excursion a part of their regular long range patrols.

Filling your waterskin and getting a parcel of dried fruit and a larger one of sliced mushrooms that your recognize you are sent on your way with your guide. Though not able to keep up with your longer strides in a run the hunter seems quite capable of jogging effortlessly for hours on end. As you travel you take turns pointing out new plants and tracks of animals exchanging what you know about them.

You pause for a short rest a bit after noon and notice the hunter east a few slices of the mushroom they gave you but also drinks from a waterskin that contains something more like honey. Beruga learns it is a substance some of their kind can make and it is used to feed the young. It is high in energy and is given to hunters and warrior for when they do not have time to eat. After some thought he offers a bit he places on a leaf.

bugkin
Setting off again after eating you travel for another hour before the hunter speaks up. Warblight and warborn near. Use care. They hunt and kill. Many to south. Some wander here near tower. The hunter is nearly noiseless and seems impressed at the little your massive form make as you slow and listen more to the woods around you.

Blue Terror
Your caution prove to be well founded as you move deeper into the woods and notice signs of larger animals, both hunter and prey. As you near the tower the hunter holds up a hand and his antennae twitch in a manor you learned is similar to pointing before both swivel and point to the back and side but otherwise he does not react or speak. Beruga continues walking and as she passes a tree turns to look to the side but darts a glance to the rear. A brief flash of blue reveals you are being stalked. The creature is about 4 feet tall but almost 8 feet long. It is covered in feathers but its mouth and limbs remind you more of lizards. The hunter quietly murmurs Blue Terror

Yay, I get to live longer! That works for me, and I don't think anything needs to change because there would still be several generations between the Shattering and Beruga's birth.

The hunter warns as he pulls to small but sharp looking darts into two of his arms and readies a spear in 2 more. Blue Terror
The Blue Terror is a bit more than 50 paces behind the pair of you but seems to be moving closer while maintaining cover.
Nov 1, 2023 5:01 pm
Realizing that the hunter probably won't stand a chance against the blue terror by itself, Beruga steps forward, placing herself between the two. As the distance between them closes, she leaps into action, pulling a rip cord on her harness with her teeth. The weighty morning star swings down propelled at first by gravity, then by momentum as Beruga runs forward performing a hula-hoop gesture with her neck.

Drawing closer to the Blue Terror, Beruga focuses on her steps, trying to time the final swing of the morning star with their inevitable collision.

The way I envision Beruga is that she can use her hands to crudely claw or hold things (no opposable thumbs), but will usually resort to using her mouth whenever possible. A bit like a T-rex that travels on all fours. I think in general it would be fair to roll checks using her hands with disadvantage. But I'm open to other ideas too.
Beruga, caught by surprise at the Blue Terror's ease as it sidesteps her attack, realized too late that she had missed an opportunity to strike. It wouldn't happen again. As she continues to run in a tight circle, the sound of metal scraping metal quickens and her morning star reels, lashing out again at her target. At the same time, Beruga runs to intercept the Blue Terror from attacking her companion, knowingly putting herself in harm's way. Well, this had better make us allies, if there was any doubt before...

This game systems keeps things simple and moving around it basically free unless you are moving a great distance. Mechanically standing between two creatures does little but story wise it is relevant. I try to let th story run the show and not game mechanics so the move is free and will keep you as the primary target. After all you are a bigger and juicier target :)

The nearer the tower so moves the fewer scents Beruga smells. There are still the scents of small creatures, squirrels, bugs, birds, and an old trace of the bugkin but no large animals or unknown smells.

Judging the dirt open reveals an abandoned interior. A winding stairway lead up with another set disappearing down underneath it. This floor has no windows and the door is the only source of light. The interior smells more of nature than civilization. Not sending any danger you move in to Evanston more. Old traces of people can be detected from above and below. Or rather traces of what people make. Oil, metals, rotting wood...
Nov 9, 2023 6:27 pm
Beruga ponders for a moment, then decides to descend the staircase to the basement, waiting for a moment to let her eyes adjust to the darkness. Cautiously, she scans the room for any signs of shiny metal, ivory, any indication of a rare artifact.
Nov 10, 2023 3:43 am
The stairs are a tight fit for Beruga, or would be if she truly was as massive as her fur made her look. Still she blots out most of the light until clear of the stairwell. The light light there is down there reveals a single large room. Sections of the floor are brighter than others and you realize there is a large section of the room filled with a black and white jumble of square block floor paving stones about 2 feet square. Other than that all you find area a few scraps of old boxes and rusty bits of metal along with the occasional weed, dead vine, or rodent skull. Sniffing around you catch the scent of several small animals that come and go from the room but nothing else.

As you move around in your search through the near pitch blackness, trusting your nose to alert you to anything of interest you feel a slight tingle in the air that you know indicates magic is near. Carefully sensing about you realize the magical emanations are coming from the black and white section of the floor. Suddenly a dim light pierces the blackness, momentarily blinding you. Crouching in a defensive position you shield your eyes and sniff. Dirt, stone, bits of nature, old wood, rusty metal, small critters, and that is it. A creaking noise sounds and the focus of the light shifts as it dims allowing you to vaguely make you a small supine figure in one corner.

A1
The figure is a mix of metal and fur with the light emanating from one of its eyes leading you to suppose it is some kind of golem? A soft feeble voice comes haltingly from the figure Evacuation protocol in effect. . . . Retreat to a secure facility. . . . This place is not secure.
Nov 10, 2023 8:20 am
Beruga backs up to the stairway but does not climb it. Her eyes remain locked on the golum-esque figure and her legs are bent, ready to jump in reaction to any hostile movement. Beruga pondered for a moment. The speaker did say that this tower held relics from the Dawn Age. Or was it the city to the south? Probably both... Either way, this thing probably thinks it is still living in a time of war and I doubt I resemble the type of person it is trying to protect. But it can't hurt to talk to it, can it? Evacuate... from what? Beruga squeeked, a bit more timidly than she would have liked.

Nov 10, 2023 8:16 pm
Curious, Beruga is tempted to step onto the tiled floor to see where it might lead, but hesitates. Perhaps more information can be found on the higher floors of the tower. That seemed like a safer bet than blindly trusting the furry one-eyed robot in the basement. Uh, thanks, but no thanks. I'll go to... my own, er, secure facility. But, thanks for the heads up! she stamers as she slowly climbs up the stairs.

Once out of sightline, Beruga will hurry up to the second floor, assuming A1 does nothing to stop her or convince her otherwise.
Nov 10, 2023 9:00 pm
The golem falls silent and the light fades from its eye as you head back upstairs. Moving on to the second floor you find a door that has been smashed apart at the top of the stairs. Looking inside you see a several bunk beds, wooden chests that look to have been broken open, a stool, table, odds and ends tossed about the room including some boots, armor, and a few small weapons.
Nov 12, 2023 9:52 am
Beruga perks her ears up and clambers about the room, sniffing each new item that she comes across. Sometimes she would stop to poke or nibble at one, but never for too long. When she comes across the weapons, Beruga selects the sharpest and least rusty small knife, and stashes it concealed in her harness. All the while, she tries to deduce what kind of creatures this tower was built for.
OOC:
Is there a second stairway leading up? If so, Beruga will explore there next.
Nov 12, 2023 6:17 pm
As you move through the room it is quickly apparent that everything is quite old and age and the environment has taken a toll on it. That is until you come to the boots and see shin bones coming from them and leading up to a figure in a corner behind one of the bunk beds. The boots look almost new. With a cautious sniff, leather and dead thing, you gently take one in your mouth and give a gentle tug. The boot comes free, with a portion of the leg trailing it.

I am not aware of any city near here. We were set to guard ans monitor the planar membrane in this region. Thats whats upstairs, the observation post
looking around he mutters if it is still working.

Wait, fellow? There is another survivor, . . . .errrr person? . . .You met someone else?

I admit, I didn't get a good look, but in the basement there is some sort of... being. It's joints were metal and squeeky, but it's head was furry. It had eyes that shone bright; brighter than the moonlight. And it spoke, asking me to evacuate.

Beruga hesitated, then added You were monitoring the planar membrane? Isn't that an incredibly dangerous task? Our people have always warned our young never to go seeking such things. But maybe you should take a look outside. I suspect this is a very different world from the one you remember during the Great War.

Despite her initial surprised reaction, Beruga found herself warming up to this decrepit, undead husk of a person. Whether it was the similarity in his story to that of the old man Theodore Grujin, or the fact that he seems to have been left alone to guard this post in an apocalyptic scenario, Beruga was getting the impression that this nameless skeleton might actually be a worthy traveling companion. But let's not get ahead of ourselves here. Who knows how he (she?) will react when they see the world they once knew withered over and replaced with a new one.
OOC:
If the skeleton goes upstairs to observe the surrounding environment, Beruga will follow to provide any needed emotional support, and also discretely look for trinkets to take with her. She will also inquire if the skeleton knows anything about what she encountered in the basement of the tower.

That must ge GoiFetch. Its just a golem that helps about the place. Funny, the eyes don't usually glow bright enough to emit light. the skeleton says as it strugles to its feet. Let us see what we can learn then. Monitoring the membrane is no big deal he pauses for a moment to look over his skeletal arm once again usually. It just means that we watch for incursions from the outer plains and localize it then send in reports. Ocasionally we had to go shut down random natural fisures and had to fight things but the sensors catch them forming so only small things gets through

As he talks he heads for the stairs up in an oddly shuflfing and staggering walk. You notice that their movments are more natural when they are distracted or focusing on other things but become more uncoordinated when they try to move with care. Odd that. As you follow you pick up an old looking dagger and a small shiny ring from the floor where the skeletal figure had lain. The daggers blad is stained dark with mud or rust and the ring is tarnished but has a few small gemstones inset around a signet of some kind.

Up stairs the window slits give a full view of the surrounding with each being about a foot wide and three feet tall. The center of the room is taken up by a large stone platform with the corners capped with metal disks inset with small gemstones. There are tattered remains of papper on the platform that likely would have covered most of it in years past. The skeleton glances out the windows and pauses, looking aorund, the stumbles to the platform and tapps the disks a coupld of times Only one responds with a faint flicker of light that blinks ppink and green before forming a small strang symbole in the air that fades after a moment.

Gone? It is all gone? What did they do? How could we loose so bad? the skeleton mutters.

What was that light? What's gone? That golem in the basement wanted me to go somewhere. Maybe we can find more answers there? But I'm afraid you might not like what you find...

When they go back down to the basement, Beruga would like to ask GoiFetch a few more questions. What makes this place unsafe? Where does the matrix node take us? Will others be there?
OOC:
I'll be taking a trip for a few days, and I may or may not be able to post while I'm away. But at the latest, I'll be able to resume on monday.

Somehow without lungs, lips, vocal cords, or a tongue the skeleton sighs. You have no idea why that seems odd when it is talking but it does. As I said the tower is a monitoring station. There is enough working enchantment to let me know how we lost. Badly. He looks at his hands again I guess this makes a bit more sense but not entirely.

Turning to look at you it says The Aid is still active? Maybe it can answer more questions. As for the tower being unsafe, that seems unlikely. Strange and possibly frighteng yes. But not dangerous. It has, or had, many enchantments to protect us and if we were in evacuation mode then they may have been activated.

The matrix node, if it is working, can take us, or you rather, almost anywhere in the mortal realms where there is another working Node. Lets go see.
He looks back outside, tries tapping the table again but only gets a few faint flickers that might be symbols before it stops responding again.

With the skeleton in the lead once more you make your way down the stairs to the basement. The skeleton looks the room over without fear and issues a few commands and questions to the construct. Failing to get a reaction he kneels down to investigate it a few moments before sitting back at it slaps his hand away.

Well that seals it. It does not recognize me as an authorized commander. You will have to ask it questions and give it instructions. It seems to be quite banged up but not broken. I can look for and rune disks to attempt to repair and restore its power to move and speak. If you let me know anything you particularly need maybe I can help you with that. I can also help you phrase questions and commands for the Aid.
You have been rather nice, given my current state, and since I will be trapped here for eternity I should thank the person who woke me with a kiss
and you somehow get the idea he is smiling in amusement, despite his perpetual skeletal grin.

As you consider its words the skeleton begins cleaning the basement, sorting through things and making piles of objects. One pile is obviously trash, the other smaller piles have a mix of items and you are unsure of the sorting plan.

GoiFetch! Beruga exclaimed, hoping to get a response from the Aid. Earlier, you said that this matrix node can transport me to a safe location? I need you to tell me the last known safe location.

Beruga looks to her skeleton companion for approval before continuing...

If this Great War you speak of was lost so badly, then perhaps that location is the best place to look for answers. Or maybe even survivors if it is recent enough! GoiFetch, can you activate the node? I am ready for transport this time.

(Assuming GoiFetch obliges) Beruga will step forward onto the matrix node once it is lit up, but not before turning to the skeleton one last time.

I wish you could come with me, but I understand if that is not a possibility. Best of luck restoring this place! But before I go, can you make me a promise? If a small child by the name Ki comes here looking for me, give her these: Beruga hands him half of her rations (2 days worth?) as well as the gemstone-encrusted ring that she found. But make sure she does not follow me from this point onward. I expect that what lies ahead is far too dangerous.

Also, you have been awake for some time now, but still cannot recall your name? I would like to have one to remember you by. How does... Chee-Klee sound? In my native tongue, that means 'setting foot on shore after crossing a river'.

The little golem remains passive for a while but regains animation and the glow to it's eye after the skeleton performs a ritual with a couple of items it finds. It then replies The last known safe transit point was to Paphos. Standby for transmission. The golem goes inert once again but this time the small border around the tiles begins to glow along runes that have been etched into it

skeleton
When the tiles begin lighting up the skeleton quickly grabs a scrap of leather and some charcoal. He talks as he sketches something on the leather. You will need this address to return to this point. I will tell the child what has happened but not help her proceed till she is of age. As for me, I know not my name but if you with you may call me In-Sindarin. It means "Last Watcher" As he finishes talking he shoves the scrap into your hands. The glow from the border washes over the tiles and then you, temporarily blinding you.
