So far so good with no battle map. In a theater-of-the-mind style game, I find they're only really necessary if they spark creative ideas for using terrain, environmental hazards, etc.
Regarding the combat tracker, I like it! Another idea that I've used in games I've run is to do the same thing, but just paste it into my GM posts as a "spoiler" on my latest post. (See below for an example):
[ +- ] Battle on the road to Boltstrike Tower
Goblin Shaman (GS): dead
Goblin Grunt 1 (GG1): 18 (Hrafe)
Goblin Grunt 2 (GG2): 0 (Edgar)
Goblin Grunt 3 (GG3): Dead
Goblin Zombie 1 (GZ1): Dead
Goblin Scum (2 of 4 alive): 3
Groups:
GG1 & Hrafe
GG2 & Makasi & Edgar
Salix & Raphel
Environment:
Road
Trees on both sides of road
Bushes between trees
I'd say do whichever makes it easier for you to track things.
