The game has rules for if surprise or ambush happens but doesn't want to get into hard rules of determining when it bappens

Whats a good example of a drawback for the magic item?

I think maybe its a highly sought artifact.

@Ironmonger42 Raphel's original stats were 10/14/12/18/14/10, but on reflection he does not feel like a character with such high Wisdom.

I altered the stats to 10/13/12/19/12/10 instead, which won't change anything that's happened so far in game. Are you okay with this, or should I go back to the original spread?

Math checks out. It isn't one of the examples arrays but it can be done with point buy rules. If anyone wants to make adjustments to their character before the end of chapter 1, I am ok with it as long as the rules are followed and I am notified.

Lovely, thanks! And yeah, I checked the point buy :P

From the game thread:
Puissance is an adventurer tier magic weapon ability which seemed to match closest to my characters archetype. Hence my earlier question about a drawback.

Oh I didn't notice the question. Must have gotten lost into the flood. I haven't given any permanent magic weapons out yet, so I was confused. Hold off on it for now and we'll see if maybe you can get it as part of your relationship dice results

Also, for the record, that weapon's power is recharge 16+. I think you said 6+ as a typo

I made a new sticky locked thread to hopefully keep track combat information in a central easy to find location. Please tell me if it helps and if there is anything else you would like tracked. Once this combat is over, we will discuss if a battle map would be necessary (though that would slow me down as I can't do that as easily when not at home)

So far so good with no battle map. In a theater-of-the-mind style game, I find they're only really necessary if they spark creative ideas for using terrain, environmental hazards, etc.

Regarding the combat tracker, I like it! Another idea that I've used in games I've run is to do the same thing, but just paste it into my GM posts as a "spoiler" on my latest post. (See below for an example):
[ +- ] Battle on the road to Boltstrike Tower
I'd say do whichever makes it easier for you to track things.

I think having a separate thread is easier on my as copying and pasting large text is doable but harder on the phone and I have a 9-5 job that requires me be in the office 3 work days a week and so I am not at my personal laptop as much as I wish I could be

With the first combat practically over, does anyone have any questions or concerns?

I am concerned we do not have enough healing. But I have faith.

You roll a lot of crits like me. It is disconcerting.
Nov 15, 2023 1:38 am
The GM does roll more dice on average than player hahaha
Nov 15, 2023 3:25 am
I'm not overly concerned, since with 8 recoveries per character we can probably start most fights at near full health.

I'm guessing our cleric has heal spells, and so does my paladin. Most groups probably get by with a single healer, I'd imagine.

I think it's going well!

I'm new to 13th Age so I may need a little prompting if you need some healing. I'm still unfamiliar with the scale of damage on this system as well as the scale of recoveries.

When either you all officially let the goblin go or someone kills it just before it gets away, you will get a quick rest. A quick rest lets you do the following:

Spend as many recoveries as you want. A recovery is a roll of a die determined by your class and you roll a number of them equal to your level (1 right now) and add your Constitution modifier. You have 8 total recoveries per full heal up unless your class gives you more. If you are below 1/2 your max hp, you are required to spend at least 1 recovery. If you have none left, you still must but there is a penalty (half the healing and take a stacking -1 to all attacks and defences until the next full heal up)

You can roll a d20 for any recharge ability you have that is not available. If you fail the roll, you can try again after the next fight. Please label which ability you are rolling for.

Note: full heal ups are narrative, not based on resting overnight.

Would you prefer me to reroll or just take the recharge/recovery rolls I did earlier?
Nov 15, 2023 12:54 pm
I would prefer we all do it together at once, so as soon as we know what happens to the goblin I will ask everyone to make their rolls as part of their next post
Nov 15, 2023 1:07 pm
I would prefer to not take agency away by just saying "oh the goblin gets away and nothing can be done", but at the same time with the speed at which PbP goes, I am wondering if I should just assume it gets away or that someone kills it. I'll make a quick poll.

What is the last goblin's fate?

Someone shoots something and it dies
It is so nimble and crafty that it manages to get away
