Chapter 1: Blood and Lightning

Nov 6, 2023 2:51 pm
Each of you has been summoned by an agent of the Archmage. Whether at the request of a different icon or due to an interest in gaining the attention of the archmage, or for some other reason entirely, you find yourself answering his summons to provide support to a tower called Boltstrike. Boltstrike Pillar is a rarity, a wizard-oriented community located in the wilderness. The wizards depend on soldiers, rangers, and other warriors to defend the tower while they concentrate on magical rituals there that are principally concerned with weather control. The tower’s commander, Ameliefor, owes her position to martial skill rather than arcane talent.

There have been rumors of The Three planning attacks on the tower, and separate rumors claim that goblins have been seen in the area who have odd tattoos on their face. The archmage mentioned a weapon named Glaezentorg that, along with some gold, would be your reward for helping keep the tower safe.

Your instructions were to meet each other at a fort of the Dragon Emperor before heading to the tower. The captain of the fort, a human named Yushif, has been told of your arrival and is expecting each of you. As you arrive, he answers any questions you have and then escorts you to a dining area where the soldiers are being fed. He explains that there is enough for each of you and offers you some. It is not the most appetizing but all the nutrition you need is found within. Once you all arrive, he will give you directions to Boltstrike tower.
OOC:
Please introduce your character by explaining their appearance and have them introduce themself to Yushif as they arrive. As you do so, roll your Icon Relationship Dice. You can roll each on a separate line or group them by the icon they are related to, but please label them so we know which belongs to which icon.

As a reminder: if you roll a 6, at some point before the next full heal up you should get a boon from that icon. This can be information, a magic item, story events centered around your character, or other things in that realm (GM has final say, but players can make suggestions). On a 5, you get the result of a 6, but there is a complication. Perhaps the information is faulty or lacking a crucial detail, or the magic item is a loaner you must give back later, or the NPC will require a favor now or later. The bigger the boon, the bigger the complication.

Hrafe considered Yushif, thoughtfully weighing the movements, microexpression, and hospitality of this agent. He could sense the prejudice, and jealousy of the southern men. Yet, even among his savage ilk, Hrafe stood taller. A head higher than the tallest man and thicker, cords of muscle from head to toe, and possibly the must vicious gaze one had ever seen. The warpaint didn't help, making the outwardly violent demeanor of his resting face that much more so.

Yet, as he sat with the soldiers and ate his meal, Hrafe couldnt help but notice the similarties between himself and the soldiers of the tower. Moved by their own cleanliness and discipline the holy warrior made a prayer for them to bless the shared meal.

"How good and wonderful is the sanctity of brothers, that in our sharing this meal we bond in common cause. For each of us, agents of the golden order, servants of the light. In our communion we serve our respective solemn and sacred obligations. On this, so auspicious a day that heaven above gives us each a sign. Let us then dine and recieve our wages, sanctified and blessed by Holy Light. So mote it be."

Makasi Nkuyu's takes a seat on the wooden bench, plate mail awkwardly jangling as she thanks the server for her food and drink. She glances at the others around her, one or two of whom she'd been only too happy to team up with on the road into the fort. Still, knowing this is a wizardly kind of place, her eyes dart to and fro, betraying her edginess. With dark skin and an unkempt head of thick, stark-white hair, the paladin's appearance confounds attempts to pin down her age. With a streak of white warpaint across her cheeks and unnatural red eyes that hint at experiences she'd rather keep hidden, Makasi exudes incongruous energies, both matronly and martial.

She reciprocates the barbarian's blessing with a quick, "Amin," leaving the reference to "brothers" unchallenged for now. Her body bears the traces of pregnancy and childbirth. But plate mail tends to hide such things.

Nodding to Yushif, the human agent for the Archmage, she extends a hand, her expression carrying a cautious wariness. "I am Makasi Nkuyu," she says with a hint of suspicion. "My companions here talked me into coming to this meeting. I'm at least curious what you have in store for us."

Salix emerges from the nearest woodline to the Fort of the Dragon Emperor and slowly makes his way through the more civilized portions of the fort until he stands face to face with Yushif.

Salix stands tall and lithe, his slender body and pointed ears betray what would seem an elven heritage. However, the woodgrain that runs across his skin, the spread of branches from his crown, and the faint green glow of his eyes hint at a story that runs much deeper.

He introduces himself as Salix, extending a long fingered hand in greeting. When Yushif mentions dining, Salix lets his gaze linger slightly too long before looking towards where dining area being gestured to. He follows the man into the room and takes a seat where offered.

Salix looks slowly around the room as the others speak to introduce themselves, again letting his gaze linger slightly longer than would be normal. Eventually it is his turn to speak.

"My name is Salix Alderroot. It is a pleasure to make all of your acquaintance. How interesting that we would be chosen to assemble here." Salix's head tilts from side to side as he speaks, evaluating the reactions and responses of the others.

A tall elven shape moves out of the forest and makes it way to the tower. He is dressed in black leather, and wears a cloak, but currently his cloak is down showing his face. A usually beautiful elven face, except for a broken nose that haven't healed correctly. A long knife hangs sheathed at his belt and several smaller throwing knives hang on a bandolier around his torso.

"Edgar Skullbreaker," he introduces himself in a sing song elven voice that don't fit his name at all.

Last to enter, Raphel's face falls when he steps into the eating hall. That damnable courtier who'd arranged for his presence here had promised him an audience with none other than the Archmage himself, and now his last ounce of hope that the knave had peddled truth has been dashed to the wall. And filthy walls at that, the fair-haired wizard observes with distaste, stained where they meet the ceiling from who-knows-how-many years' worth of smoke from the hearth. Were there no servants about the building?

No, the Archmage could not possibly deign to set foot in such a place. Raphel masters himself, schooling his involuntary sneer into cool indifference. "I am Raphel of house Cassidor," he says when the eyes of the assembled turn in his direction, clearly expecting that he continue the round of introductions. He sketches out the slightest of bows while fantasizing about murdering the false-tongued swindler. With what she'd charged Raphel for this, he had been left with little more than the clothes on his back. "A, ahem, pleasure to make your acquaintance."

After that, he finds himself at a loss for words. When a bowl of unknown substance is handed over, the elf takes it with both hands. It steams. He perches stiff-backed on the communal bench and prods at the lumps within. "What is... this?"

You find yourself at the same table, as Yushif guided you all to the same one. As food is brought out to you, Yushif says to you all, "My orders were to get you fed and supplied, and then send you on your way. Running a fort such as this is taxing on time, so I will give you all an hour to get acquainted. I will send a soldier to come get you when I am ready to speak next. Enjoy the chief special," he says as he chuckles a little bit seeing some of the confusion and disgust. "Out cook outdid himself today." Commander Yushif walks out of the room, leaving 5 strangers awkwardly at a table together. It is clear you are all here for the same job, to provide support for Boltstrike tower.
OOC:
As for the results of the icon relationship dice:
Hrafe: 5 (+ Priestess)
Makasi: 6 (+/- Lich King)
Salix: 5 & 6 (+ High Druid)
Edgar: 6 (- Three)
Raphel: none

I will keep these in mind as we progress. If you have any suggestions, you can message me directly. In the meantime, go ahead and roleplay being at the table together. If you all would like to progress past this part, you can say so in the general chat.
Nov 7, 2023 4:52 pm
Makasi leaves her hand hanging for a moment as Yushif ignores it and heads back to his duties. She scoffs aloud and lets the fist find a chunk of bread. "Guess that shows where we rank in his priorities," she tells the others. She dips the bread into the bowl of gruel and takes a large bite. Her demeanor suggests that eating without utensils is somehow foreign to her, but she's not necessarily offended by it. After she swallows, the woman says, "I'm Makasi Nkuyu for those I haven't met yet. A couple of you I recognize from the road to the fort. Glad you all made it safely."
Nov 7, 2023 9:20 pm
"It is well. Mortals as we should not seek the attention of a god." As he said the word "god" Hrafe touched the sword on his hip. It was The Priestess' own sword, Atonement the Lightbringer. The Artifact was rumored to send the souls of those it slew to Heaven Above. "I am called Hrafe, Twenty Man-Slayer. I know you all by reputation." Hrafe poured the gruel into a trencher of sourdough bread and drank what remained in his bowl. Producing iron cutlery from his waist pouch he began to eat rather quickly, somehow without smudging his warpaint. "For such fabled warriors to meet. The Signs are good, and these goblins, surely our mettle woll be called to answer. For my dreams of late, blood and thunder, a tide that washes our world in purifying crimson. Is it not so with you all?"
Nov 8, 2023 2:57 am
"It is good that all made the journey without issue. Our host seems reluctant at best to actually play a host to us. No matter, we'll get what we need and be on our way soon."

Salix observes as the others make to eat their meals however they see fit. For his part, he takes ahold of the bowl and tips it up to slowly drink up it's contents.

"Fabled warriors may be a bit premature, but time will tell. As for dreams, mine have been... different as of late but not necessarily bloody."
Nov 8, 2023 3:25 am
Raphel raises an eyebrow at the painted man's claim. This one has probably not held a book before, let alone trod on the floor of any magical institution, so where could he have heard of Raphel? Ludicrous. Leaving his bowl untouched while the others eat, Raphel returns to a standing position. He smooths down the front of his ruffled vest.

He'd been sorely fleeced, true, but this talk of a mission at least offers him a chance to recoup his losses. More likely than not, he would soon have a chance at practical application of his arcane theories too, something that he admits has been lacking in his studies. Any upstart mage can cast in the confines of their private study. He has grander ambitions.

"I concur. I see little to be gained by lingering here." The wizard waves a hand at their general surroundings. "If you have had your fill of the local... delights, let us depart for greener pastures."

"Modesty does not suit a Landvætyr. Your resplendent foliage betrays your station." Hrafe chuckled shaking his head and pouring himself a tankard of sour scented alto wine. Grabbing a handful of anise and lavender from a bowl in the center of the table, he crushed them in his fingers making a tea of them in the vessel. "You know I remember a story about Embla, a maiden made of wood. It is not a tale for stone walls to hear. Some other time."

"So you are still alive Skullbreaker?"
Nov 8, 2023 3:59 am
Makasi sips the sour wine with a grimace. "I've had some weird dreams, too," she tells Hrafe. "Saw... some kin, let's say. They seem to think I'm, uh, supposed to be here." She glances up at Raphel, as if eager to change the subject. "Not hungry, hon? Eat up! You'll need your strength for the walk over to the tower."

Raphel purses his lips. "Quite so. I find my appetite lacking at the moment. Just as well given the fare." He inclines his head, struck by a thought. "If you are intent on my portion, do feel free."
Nov 8, 2023 8:31 am
Edgar is quick to sample all the delights, and he takes mouthful after mouthful. Barely giving himself time to drink inbetween. The display of him eating lands a place between impressive and repulsive. He finishes with a burp and looks up at the rest. "My apologies. Been a while since I ate."

When he hears Raphel is offering his portion, Edgar grins at him. "Don't mind if I do," he says and reaches out with his hand and grabs some food of the plate and places it on his own before he starts eating again.
Nov 8, 2023 10:08 am
Hrafe was staring pointedly, suspiciously at Edgar Skullbreaker.

"You are somehow different than I remember."

In horror and shock Hrafe clutched his own beard in defense. Mortified at this disturbing fact.

"You shaved your beard!!?!"

He recovered almost as soon as he had lost his composure. A smile crept across his face as this truth delighted him. Running his fingers through his ochre stained beard he cackled, not unlike the bird of his namesake. Hrafe took advantage of Edgar's gluttony to speak. His voice dropped to a richer lower pitch. He then sighed realizing the magnitude of his responsibility. Taking a deep breath Strongheart boomed to Skullbreaker, touching a silver arm ring he wore on his left wrist. It seemed immediately as if the weight of the world fell on his shoulders.

"Yes it seems well, I accept this burden. I will grow a magnificent beard to honor the loss of yours, twice as long as yours to right this cosmic wrong. I solemnly swear this to The Priestess." Touching the crown of his skull above the seat of his consciousness, as he invoked Her title.

~~~~~~
"Wherever you go Saint Nkuyu, there you will be. I am Confessor to many, if you wish to tell me of this dream I could offer another perspective. I can see we have a great deal in common. Though, we have walked different paths we arrive at the same truth."
In spite of the garish face paint, and the glazed look of the psychedelic trance in his eyes, Hrafe also showed a deep and thoughtful care in the moment he shared with her. "I see you are closer to Unity, more than anyone I have ever met. What truths we shall discover." Hrafe spoke with awe and wonderment to the Saint, some grand vision betrayed in his near glowing green-gold eyes.
Edgar shakes his head in sadness. "I also grew 2 feet and grew knife ears," he says with a sigh. "Now the darned bear won't even grow."
Nov 8, 2023 1:18 pm
"You two have met prior to this day, then." Raphel looks askance at the cloaked elf, filing away his own strange words for later consideration. "Does he always speak in so... profuse a manner?"
"I am a man of few words, he speaks all those I let pass," Edgar replies. "And then some more."
Nov 8, 2023 3:29 pm
Makasi laughs at the exchange. "Seems we've all been through some, er, interesting times." She smiles as Skullbreaker scarfs down the second portion while Hrafe soliloquizes. "I'm no saint, honey. Far from it. But I might as well grow out my beard, too. I'll make it a vow to any god that will listen." She runs a finger across her smooth, woman's chin and grins. "This is six months' growth already. Can't you tell?"
Salix's eyes lighten a little when Hrafe makes mention of the tale. "I would very much like to hear your tale. You may be right that this is an inappropriate place to do it justice, though. Perhaps along the trail somewhere."
"Edgar, does the loss of your beard grieve you?"
Nov 8, 2023 7:28 pm
Edgar shrugs. "Just meat," he says, though you can pick up on him not being completely honest. "It beats being dead in any case."
Nov 8, 2023 7:45 pm
Makasi spits a mouthful of wine out at the mention of being dead. She wipes a hand across her mouth and stands upright. "Uh, sorry 'bout that. Guess I'm a wee big jumpy."
Nov 8, 2023 8:12 pm
"I am only prosaic when making an oath. Indeed I know Skullbreaker, though not half as well as any brother should. We learned the martial art from his father. What was it The Foehammer always called me? 'Axe Idiot.'" Hrafe was in very good spirits as the meal progressed and the bond of fellowship grew. With a servants heart he kept filling the cups of the company enjoying the company apart from his bishopric. "And didn't he call you something similar?"
You all continue this conversation and eventually realize that an hour has passed. A human female in archer's attire approaches your table.
"Are you the people Commander Yushif mentioned who were headed to Boltstrike Tower?" With a confirmation, she continues, "I was told to send for you. Commander Yushif will meet you at the west wing of the fort, opposite the side you arrived at. He said he would have some items for you and a map of the local area. Please meet him at once. Long live the Dragon Emperor." With a proud military pose, the archer leaves.
As you collect your things, you make your way to the west wing of the fort and see Commander Yushif as you were told to expect him. "Thank you for coming so quickly. I was informed that I was to give you some supplies before you go. Here..." The commander hands you each two vials, each with a liquid inside. One vial smells of herbs and is red while the other smells of oil and is multiple shades of brown swirling together. Both have a feint magical aura that you sense immediately. "The first is a basic potion of healing. The other is enchanted oil. Use with caution, but also remember that you can't use them if you're dead. With that said," The commander pulls out a small map. It is well made, but also focused on locations only a few days travel from the fort. "Follow this road here on the map. You should only need to camp twice before you reach the tower. If you leave now, you should get to the tower by the afternoon of your 3rd day of travel. Honestly, I don't know much about the tower or what they do there other than that they use it to control weather. People like the High Druid are not fans of what the Archmage does to control nature, but at the same time the weather can be dangerous. Anyways, safe travels. Long Live the Dragon Emperor."
Your first day of travel is fairly uneventful. You make camp and talk around the campfire. Rations you brought with you suffice, while some of you may have tried to hunt some game. When you wake up the next morning, you pack up and travel for about two hours. The trees create a thick canopy, casting plenty of shade while also letting some rays of light shine brightly through here and there. In the shadows you suddenly spy multiple white faces peeking out of the bushes on multiple sides. At first they look like the heads of skeletons, but then you notice the pale green skin and long ears. As they reveal more and more of themselves, you notice their arms are thin, almost mummified, yet still moving as they they were normal. Four of them seem easier to kill, but they have shortbows at the ready. Three others are armed with clubs and look like they want to get up close and break skulls. One other seems unusual, holding a staff and looking to cackle under its breath. They have clear bloodlust in their eyes, and the are staring at you. Combat seems inevitable and unavoidable.
OOC:
The initiative goes like this:
In any order: Edgar, Hrafe, Masaki
Goblin Shaman
Salix
Goblin Scums & Grunts
Raphel
Escalation Die: +0
The goblin scums are mooks, meaning any damage you deal to them is dealt to them as a whole. Once the damage they have taken reaches a threshold, the one you attacked last dies. Some abilities care if you are dealing with a mook, so keep that in mind.
No one is grouped up, so anything that targets multiple creatures in a group would only target one creature at this time.
As for distances, assume everyone is Near everyone else. If you need help, see the Useful References thread and look at the Engagement Chart. You can use your movement to engage one enemy, or to become Far from everyone. There are trees and bushes but otherwise the area is fairly open.
Hrafe could smell the Shaman on the wind, it excited his blood, though he did not know what he began to itch for a fight, dark magic was in the blood. "Upon the o'er turned keel. Clamber up with a heart of steel. Cool as The Ocean's spray. Your death is on its way. And..." When the feeling was just about to recede the goblins were revealed. As soon as he espied the Shaman his demeanor changed, bolting forth he drew Atonement, The Lightbringer with a flash of golden light. "YOUR DEATH IS ON ITS WAY!" The Unstoppable Slayer, felt the battle spirit of The Serpent rise within him, he darted immediately at the Shaman, sword in the fools guard, shield at the high ready. His Hamrammr, Shape Strength, made his lunging thews swift as the striking cobra. His arms like the fangs. As he struck in a powerful thrust at the shaman.
Hrafe uses his movement to engage the goblin shaman. You swing and hit the shaman (remember that to roll and take the higher result, add "H1" after 1d20 and before the modifier, as your result was a 22 not a 35). By the rules of rage, you get a critical hit as both rolls were 11+ before the +5, which means double damage. I see the 11 damage (doubled to 22), but remind me where the extra d6 came from?
"Rífaði þig í mola." Hrafe hissed taunting the goblin in ravening pleasure at what was sure to be the Shaman's last moments alive. His guttural native tongue a primal wail in the throes of his rage.
The shaman, staggered by the first blow, barely survived the second blow from Edgar, his sneak attack being triggered by Hrafe being engaged with the shaman already. The shaman looks to be very close to death, but it also seemed that way to begin with with the mummified arms and skull tattooed face.
The Goblin Shaman narrowly avoids the paladin's halberd, allowing it a chance to act before it inevitably dies. It successfully disengages, going from near and engaged to Hrafe, Edgar, and Makasi to near and disengaged. It is also now far from Salix and Raphel. It then shakes it staff and points it at Hrafe, the one who landed the heavier blow on it earlier. The attack lands, as Hrafe feels a strong force try to crush his chest and he begins to shake. The shaking does not affect now, but the shaking seems to intensify as the goblin scum look to him as if they are going to charge. The look in their eyes tells you all that the curse is why they are all staring at Hrafe. Luckily, it seems the shaman was not able to spread the curse to anyone else, but that also makes Hrafe a major target.
With the shaman dead and all the rest of the enemies on one initiative, you can all go ahead and take your turn again.
I won't make any actions official until Raphel declares what he is doing, as he is still part of round 1. For all players other than Raphel, the escalation die is now +1 and thus you get a +1 to all attack rolls.
As of now, if you moved far, you are far. Otherwise, all you are near everyone else. If you were one of the ones that charged the shaman, you are each engaged with one goblin.
Hrafe didn't seem to register the club that struck him in the torso. The sickening crunch of his ribcage indicated the blow was deep, that it hadn't instantly killed him a testament to his endurance. "Each must die someday!" Turning into the slash Hrafe sliced at the goblin who had wounded him. The glowing steel bit through flesh and bone. Hrafe recovered almost instantly from the formidable attack.
Raphel fires a bolt of energy at the goblin scum and is exactly enough to kill one. The other three remain, staring at the mages trying to keep their distance while they stay in the tree line.
Hrafe lands a solid blow against the goblin in his face, but these goblins are not as flimsy as the archers so it lives and does not seem staggered yet. He does manage to regain some vigor in the process.
OOC:
To determine if you got hit, see the attack that mentioned your name. In that line it will say "vs AC" or "vs PD" or "vs MD". If the number rolled matches or exceeds your defense of the same name, you take the damage.
Homecoming, what ability is puissance? I don't see it as a human or barbarian ability. Either way the only ability you would recharge is rage but you get a free recharge attempt the moment the combat is over.
Everyone: remember that starting now you get a +1 to all attacks because the escalation die went to 1 as soon as round 2 hit. Once round 3 starts it will become a +2.
Sadly the glowing javelin misses its target and the goblins prepare for another attack. 3 goblin scum hide among the bushes and seem to be focused on the two adventurers who are attempting to avoid direct conflict. 3 goblin grunts, one engaged with Hrafe, one engaged with Makasi, and a staggered one engaged with makasi and Edgar, analyze their options. As the wizard killed one of the scum, two scum gang up on him while the third takes a shot at the cleric. As for the grunts, the one battling Hrafe takes a swing at him, the one engaged with only Makasi takes a swing at her again in revenge for the heavy hit earlier, and the last engaged with Edgar attempts to punish him for ignoring him for another grunt.
The grunts are all thwarted, as none can land a good blow. The scum, on the other hand all have better luck.
OOC:
Raphel, you take 9 damage (3 from first blow bot 6 from 2nd as it is a crit), unless you want to use your shield spell. If so, roll 1d20+6 and tell me if you want to replace a roll (the 2nd i'd presume as it was a crit).
Everyone go ahead and take your next turn. Reminder, Raphel's turn happens before any other, but you don't have to wait until he posts to go (I just won't say what happens until after Raphel acts). Raphel still uses the +1 escalation die, but everyone else your turn takes place with the escalation die at +2 now. When you roll, just roll normally and add +2 separately. For example, if you had 1d20+4, you'd put 1d20+4+2.
As for positioning, everyone is nearby everyone else except for Raphel and Salix who are far from everyone else but each other. Please correct me if you are not where I think you are. Hrafe, Edgar, and Makasi are all engaged with at least 1 goblin (Edgar is engaged with 2).
With no cover to hide behind, more arrows pepper down on Raphel. The wizard raises a hand, fixing a withering glare at his cretinous foe. The air shimmers ahead of him. Despite his deflection, both arrows find their mark. He drops down to one knee, pressing a hand to his side against a bloody wound while sending another bolt of magic at one of the archers.
I did the math and he would get a +9 like he wrote, it just wasn't written showing all the numbers.
He gets a +5 by default (4 from Dex + Lv), and then gets a +3 from escalation die, then a +1 from his strength because of the at will ability he used. 5+3+1 is 9. I would have preferred he had wrote it like that for ease of reading instead of 8+1, but the math is right
The elf's lance of light strikes true as the last goblin scum archer is unable to get out of the way in time. The only remaining goblins are the staggered grunt near edgar and the recently reanimated goblin zombie in front of Hrafe. The zombie shambles up and tries to attack Hrafe, but the goblin grunt's self preservation instincts kick in and it tries to flee and manages to do so. It runs as far as it can, going deep into the trees. There is a brief moment before it is out of sight and gone.
OOC:
You can all take your turn. Escalation die is +4 now (+3 for Raphel, who goes before anyone else)
The goblin is far from everyone. Unless someone wants to spend their entire turn running, the goblin will get away unless it is killed by an attack that can hit a far creature. There is no need to attack, it is optional. If you all agree to not attack it, I will say it is super easy to kill the goblin and you do so easily, as it would be the last combattant with an AC of 13, PD of 10, and only 7 hp. If you all attacked it there is almost no chance it would live.
Also as part of your next post, roll any recoveries you want to roll and roll for any recharge abilities. For recoveries, roll them one at a time. You can roll any number of them as long as you have enough recoveries as you want to spend. Remember, a recovery is one roll of your recovery die determined by your class plus your Constitution modifier. For recharge abilities, roll each on a separate line and say what ability you are rolling for. Except for abilities that state otherwise like Rage, you are rolling a d20 without any modifiers. The talent, feature, or spell will tell you the minimum you need to roll, so 11+ means you recharge on an 11 or higher.
Hrafe knelt supporting himself on his knee and sword. "Thou who art the light, bringer of truth, justice, prudence, fortitude, and love. Thou who art the rule and guide of Unity. Render unto us in our hour of victory peace that surpasses understanding. For thou art Purity, and Eternal Order. In thy radiance there is all, where thou have not yet touched there can only be nothingness. So mote it be."
Hrafe's rage was slowly abating, every spoken word seemed to steal the fervor from him and as he centered himself in peace he calmed. After finishing his prayer he began to collect the limbs and bodies of the dead and pile them to arrange a pyre. "A great victory for the Light." Tamping down his distaste, the elf places his hand a fingers-breadth above the reanimated goblin's remains, looking for signs of the magic that made it rise a second time.
As Raphel examines a corpse, he notices that the feeling of magic is strongest when his hand is near the face tattoos. It is hard to say if the lich King, one of his many necromancers, or an unassociated necromancer is responsible, but your studies give you no reason to see this an anything short of necromancy performed on a living creature as opposed to a corpse.
Hrafe's head suddenly hurts and his vision fades to white. A familiar feeling comes up on you, as the voice of the priestess hangs in the air. "A warning of evil..." she says softly. Just then you see dozens of humans, elves, and half elves running for their lives. Lightning falls from the sky, incinerating those it strikes. The strikes seem aimed, not random. You look up and see a winged beast flying overhead. It's red eyes lock onto you and a bolt of lightning goes straight for you. Your vision returns, but you feel drained and your heart is racing, as if you almost experienced death.
OOC:
Hrafe relates his vision to his companions and waits for their input.
Nov 17, 2023 3:01 am
"Did you recognize the beast? Some sort of dragon perhaps? I shudder to think that the Lich King might be working with The Three."
Nov 17, 2023 3:32 am
"Perhaps a dragon, but not one of the three." Hrafe shook his head at the notion, he was no genius but that would be too simple. "It used light as a weapon." Hrafe said and rubbed over his heart where the lightning bolt had struck him in the vision. "No creature of shadow, not even an antigod, could do that."
If Hrafe tries to recall, the beast is not one he has met before, but it was large, had wings, and breathed lightning. There are no sorcerers here, but it is not unlikely to be a dragon.
"Well, another reason not be caught out in the open," Edgar says. "Are you all ready to move on?"
Nov 17, 2023 12:50 pm
OOC:
I see 5 votes of being ready do I am moving forward.
You collect your things and your breath and continue down the road. You camp another night and wake up the next day, arriving at Boltstrike Tower a little after noon. You see a tower that looks more like a massive stone column that is hollowed out to allow people inside rather than a tower build brick by brick from the ground up. It is surrounded by a few stone and timber dwellings or storage structures, a well, an herb garden, small pens for livestock such as goats and sheep, and an archery range where you see some soldiers practicing. As you look at the tower, you get the sense that it is a notch above what you can handle at your current skill level.
OOC:
The tower itself is a champion tier environment, so +5 to the DC of all rolls you would make while near or inside of it, such as getting doors open or testing magic within it.
As you approach, you are greeted by a few individuals. The one in front is a half-elf woman in wizardly robes, but you think you hear chain armor as she walks. Next to her is a human in robes, and carries himself like an excited mage. The rest seem to be guards, all fighters by the look of it. The woman speaks first. "Greetings. You must be the adventurers that I was told would be coming to help us. This is Boltstrike tower, an old spire we use due to its residual magic to control the weather. My name is Ameliefor, and I am the commander here. I would like to get straight to business. How was your journey here?"
Nov 17, 2023 1:06 pm
Ah, civilization at last. Raphel steps forward, giving a quick bow of greeting to the two mages. "I am Raphel Cassidor, a wizard of some small repute. To answer your question, the roads were fairly uneventful, though we did run into some pestilent goblins along the way. Reinforced by necromancy no less, though I can't fathom why any mage would waste the time." He frowns slightly. "Surely the tower cannot be struggling to handle a goblin incursion?"
Nov 17, 2023 2:42 pm
Makasi scans the area as Raphel makes the introductions. Her gaze rests on the soldiers practicing some distance away.
Nov 17, 2023 2:59 pm
OOC:
Updated the previous post as she would have given her name.
"Goblins you say?" Ameliefor says with surprise. "Our divination magic did not detect the presence of goblins. And necromancy, you say? We can't assume it is the Lich King's work, but it is safe to assume he or his minions may be involved. Well for now, let us get you settled in. You cannot enter the tower for a while, as we need to perform a ritual to allow you to be seen as guests or else the barrier will slowly kill you." As she says this, you notice a light hum in the air that you may have mistaken for a ringing in your ear. However, you realize after this comment that this must be a sound produced by the invisible barrier around the tower. "I was also instructed to give you a weapon we have here named Glazentorg. It is attuned to the tower and thus cannot be removed from it, but we are working on a ritual to end its attunement that will be done by midnight. My second in command here, Varis, will answer any further questions you have. I must attend to the divination. Long live the Dragon Emperor." Ameliefor strikes a pose and walks off. All but 2 of the soldiers and Varis remain.
Varis speaks up. "It is a pleasure to meet you. Apologies for the short conversation. Ameliefor is a 'straight to business' person. I can answer any of your questions, whether about the work here or anything else. However, I do have one for you first. Who will be taking Glaezentorg?"
OOC:
The exact type of weapon that Glaezentorg the bloody is does not matter, but it must be a melee weapon. Here is what it does:
Glaezentorg the Bloody (melee weapon – recharge 11+):
When you hit with an attack using this weapon that staggers or drops an enemy, make another melee attack that turn as a free action. Quirk: Speaks in a low and unnatural growling voice.
Nov 17, 2023 10:33 pm
"Sacred weapons to the sacred revealed. I would be most honored to weild such a weapon for The Eternal Order." Hrafe was a natural choice for such a brutal weapon. "But should Saint Nkuyu desire the artifact I will defer to her Righteousness." Hrafe bowed his head to Makasi when he said this in deference of her superior station. "Such a blood soaked weapon may suit Skullbreaker as well."
Nov 19, 2023 10:40 pm
"Understood." Varis takes out a notepad and writes something down. "I will tell the mage to give Glaentorg to you. What was your name again?" He gets the name Hrafe and writes that down. "Now, the divinations takes about 10 minutes. Do you have any questions for me while we wait? This may be a good time to introduce yourself as well. We knew adventurers were coming but not who to expect."
Nov 20, 2023 12:02 am
"Thank you, Varis," Makasi says. She introduces the group. "What exactly shall we be doing? If it's not goblins or necromancers, I shudder to think what you need our talents for!"
Nov 20, 2023 12:32 am
"There have been rumors of the Three arranging an attack against the tower. We are safe as long as we have the barrier, but not enough guards to investigates signs of troops massing nearby. You will be asked to take care of anything that is not immediately near the tower."
Nov 20, 2023 1:00 pm
Edgar pays attention as Varis explains their task. "You seem quite sure of your defenses. Don't know the Three to make feeble attacks without victory being a sure thing."
Nov 20, 2023 1:30 pm
"You must have some inkling towards what drew The Three's notice to your tower," Raphel prompts. "Not to mention the Lich King's intervention, if the goblins we dispatched were indeed his underlings looking to cut off reinforcements. No small matter could attract notice from powers so large."
Nov 20, 2023 1:48 pm
"This tower is very safe, but also extremely important. It is 2 days away from a fortress, and if it could be used to manifest storms then most of the people within a few days travel would be at the mercy of those storms. If they do have a plan, we hope the divination will find them and we can have you deal a big enough blow that they abandon the idea."
Nov 20, 2023 2:04 pm
Raphel acknowledges the human's explanation with an inclination of his chin. He would pursue the topic further during their coming time spent around the tower. Magic worthy of attention from potentially two icons? This is an opportunity he is intent on seizing. "You have my assistance. Where would you have me start?"
"Well," Varis looks back at the tower. "The commander's divination shouldn't take much longer. She will have a mission for you soon, if the divination finds anything that is. We didn't see anything about goblins on the road earlier, which is odd. You can ask me more questions or walk around outside of the tower for the next 5 or so minutes.
"It is the very nature of the shadow to obscure, confound, and render that which is easily seen invisible. I conjure the attacks are meant as a distraction for a grander scheme. Such is the nature of guerilla warfare."
Hrafe found a water basin and removed his regalia and trappings. In preparation for attuning to the Glaezentorg. He washed off his face paint, which seemed to melt easily in water, without staining the garment he used to dry it. The greasy paint however did impregnate the fibers of the cloth, and he tucked it away for later use.
"This Glaezentorg. Tell me the legend of it. I have read a great deal of artifact weapons in the Clockwork Library of the Cathedral of Light. Never was it mentioned."
Hrafe had a striking face, not handsome nor ugly, it matched his immense physique somewhere between grotesquely monstrous, and plainly human. His forehead bore a brand, unusual for a temple acolyte. The insignia of the Priestess had been burned into the bone. Marks of The Devil were upon him, from his alabaster skin, crimson lips, to his shining green and red irises. How such a misbegotten fiend had ended up a dedicated member of the Faith Militant was a mystery, and perhaps a miracle in itself. Eyes shining with intelligence and primal hunger regarded Varis eagerly, expectantly.
Salix stays silent for a long while as the others speak, a normal custom for him. He spends most of his time intensely observing the tower. "Would it always result in a calamity were the tower to cease functioning? Is our goal to prevent it from falling silent or to prevent it from falling into the wrong hands?"
Nov 21, 2023 1:45 am
Varius looks at Hrafe. "Glaezentorg is a weapon that was taken from an Orc leader. It wants violence and tries to make its wielder more violent, but a strong soul can resist. It is too violent, however, for the guards here to use and so we figured a group of adventurers would make a better home so we mentioned it when we asked for assistance."
Looking to Salix, "We have been controlling the weather for long enough that I do not recall the natural weather. I believe there used to be some flooding, which inspired the tower to begin with. Nothing evil, but irritating as it would wipe out homes some years if built too close to a river a few miles from here. For the most part, now the the tower is in operation, it is more about not letting it in the wrong hands."
Nov 21, 2023 4:50 am
Makasi regards Hrafe curiously. He seemed to be so devoted to the Priestess. Why was she so unwilling to devote herself similarly to the Great Gold Wyrm?
Hearing Varius's explanation of the tower's function, the paladin nodded. "We'll take clear skies, please." She grins at the functionary.
"Clear, and full of golden light, aye." Hrafe agreed immediately with Makasi.
Hrafe was visibly pleased at the description of this prize. "I assure you all, nothing could increase my lust for blood. I was divinely anointed with the gift of violence. Glaezen Torg, in my native tongue means "Glass Cutter" a fitting weapon for my talents."
I see 4 votes to continue. Once I see the 5th vote I will have the commander come back out
Nov 21, 2023 9:23 pm
Commander Ameliefor comes back, somehow both amused and confused, but mostly serious. "It seems a small army of hobgoblins and goblins have amassed at Greenstand. No idea how we didn't notice, but it is so predictable that they would be there of all places. Greenstand is the best place to gather a group before an assault on the tower, but that also makes it very predictable. It happened so many times that we set magical traps there."
The commander suddenly starts walking back and forth as if talking to a line of soldiers. "Alright adventurers, time to do what you were sent for. I need you to go to Greenstand and say the command word I will give you. This should trigger the traps there and wipe out most of not all of the army while we stay here and figure out why they evaded our divination until now. I have some magic items that have not been ritually connected to tht tower. I can send you off with 2 of them as well as some healing potions. Any questions?"
OOC:
You will be given one magic suit of armor and one magic weapon or spell implement (like a wand or staff or holy symbol). You can spend a relationship die to get one of the items or we can use a poll to see who wants what. If more than one person wants the same thing then I'll roll a d20 for each and the highest gets it. Hrafe will be getting Glaezentorg later so I would say he can ask for the armor but he will already be getting a weapon later so he probably doesn't need either. Up to you guys.
Nov 22, 2023 3:48 am
What magic items do you want? Public
I want the magic weapon or spell implement
I want the magic armor
I don't want either
Nov 22, 2023 4:49 am
OOC:
I'm OK with the armor or weapon. Or neither. I can cash in my Lich King tie for my prize if you want me to.
Nov 22, 2023 12:57 pm
OOC:
I wouldn't mind a magic weapon, though I don't mind one of the casters getting a spell implement instead. Also willing to use my relationship die.
Nov 22, 2023 1:14 pm
OOC:
I'll start looking at what to offer, but I want to see if RAAM wants to try and get one of the items or is ok with Makasi getting the armor and Furmyr getting the weapon
I have decided that the weapon will be an Adventurer Tier (+1 to hit and damage) Abandon Weapon: You deal +2d6 damage with your first attack each battle using this weapon (champion: +4d6; epic: +4d12). Quirk: Blurts out obscenities. (For decorum’s sake, use euphemisms when speaking in character.)
For the armor (which can be robes too), it will be Adventurer tier (+1 AC) Stone Flesh Armor (+1 applies to PD too)
Nov 24, 2023 2:59 pm
OOC:
To keep things going, I'm going to go with the votes I see now.
Commander Ameliefor summons a guard who is instructed to bring out some items. As they run to get them, she explains, "To reiterate, your job is to go to Greenstand and trigger the magical traps with the command word I will give you. Whoever is left alive and not fleeing is your responsibility to finish off. Once this is done, return here for your next assignment. It will be best to go at night, so you will leave in a few hours." At this time the guard returns holding a bag with the sound of clinking glass inside and a suit of armor and a dagger. The commander takes the items from the guard as she explains them. "This magic dagger has a bit of a quirk to make the user say odd things, but is useful right when a fight starts. This magic armor helps protect you not just from swords and arrows, but from things that target your body that you cannot block as well. This bag contains a healing potion for each of you. The one that seems more vibrant is a higher quality than the others, but there is only one of that quality. As soon as it starts getting dark you are to head out. It shouldn't be long after your return that Glaezentorg should be un-attuned to the tower and available to..." She bends over to Varis, who whispers back. "...to Hrafe, it seems. Any questions before I return to my work?"
OOC:
The armor goes to Makasi and the dagger goes to Edgar. As for the potion, you can if Salix or Raphel will get it. If anyone wants to spend a relationship die during the hours before the mission, I might come up with something extra. If you are going to get a magic item, the relationship die probably will not be another magic item.
Nov 24, 2023 7:40 pm
"I'm good to go," Edgar says and thanks the commander for the dagger.
OOC:
Raphel raises an eyebrow. "What is the advantage to be found from setting out once the sun sets, rather than immediately? I confess I cannot see it at the moment. Do the goblins have some impediment?"
Nov 25, 2023 12:06 pm
Varius perks up. "It will help you approach stealthily. There is a special path to get there unseen, but since the group is not a small group then it is beat to arrive completely by surprise."
Nov 25, 2023 12:40 pm
"It will also allow us to use dawn's light to our advantage. A man fights poorly with the sun in his eyes, a hobgoblin doubly so." Hrafe challenged with an eager grin.
"Captain Ameliefor, render your three most promising unblooded archers. I am certain to return them each blooded and hardened. The Priestess gave me to this cause. I am certain to be worth at least that many."
Hrafe stood too his fullest height. Flexing against his sword. He hadnt put it down since retrieving it. Only to point out the runes burned into the haft, and the blade emblazoned with the word "Redeemer." Which had been engraved into the steel. The hardened ash handle, reinforced as it was with brass, still groaned under Hrafe's immense strength. Strong as he was, it was doubtless, one could walk five hundred leagues and not find his equal. Moreover, Hrafe, bearded and brutal looking, was still gangly and awkward - he was merely sixteen. "Though I have never lead warriors, and as such only accept volunteers." He had such incredible potential as his brillant green eyes bore into Ameliefor, not a question that he was her immediate superior in his eyes. He was requesting with words, but his commanding stature left no question he was giving her an order. Still apart from bending the blade, he was at rapt attention defferential to her obvious seniority.
Nov 25, 2023 4:37 pm
Commander Ameliefor looked at the barbarian. Her eyes glowed with experience, a tinge of magic. "You may have one of my archers. I cannot afford to send half of them with you. The mages inside are skilled at ritual magic, not combat magic. However, if you intend to leave the tower and come back before nightfall, I expect my archer in good health and will take any wound on him as your responsibility."
She then looks at the high elf just before he leaves. "It is true that their ability to see in the dark is better than a human's, but not so much that it gives them an advantage. You may examine the tower and its grounds, but if you get close to the tower remember that it will hurt."
Nov 25, 2023 5:08 pm
Makasi hesitates as she considers the enchanted armor. Finally, she reaches out and touches the breastplate. Barely audible under her breath, she says, "I'm guessing you want me to have this. May your spirits protect me."
She nods to the others. "Let's meet here at sunset. Till then."
"Where's the best stocked kitchen in this place?"
Nov 27, 2023 4:45 am
Commander Ameliefor points at a small building off to the side. "That is where food is prepared, such as where meat is butchered and stored. I find eating with someone of a lower rank causes those below to think of themselves as equals with you. You may use the facilities, but I will not be joining."
Makasi rolls her eyes at the commander. "Sure, thing, Commander. We'll let you get back to your duties, then. Don't want anyone to get the wrong ideas by seeing you talking to us peons." She follows Hrafe to help prepare a meal.
Nov 27, 2023 4:09 pm
The commander returns to the tower with her second in command. Time passes as sundown comes. The group reforms and heads out as instructed. After about an hour along the path given, the party starts to see flashes in the distance. Based on the directions, the party is still about 15 minutes away from their destination. After a quick talk amongst the members, the party continues, still having a job to do.
When they arrive, they don't find a group of hobgolins and goblins, but the aftermath of a war zone. Stone arches that were likely part of an old ruin lay scattered as if recently forced apart in an explosion. Plants seem singed as if strike by some kind of energy. Corpses lay on the floor. The fight seemed rather one-sided, as there is no corpse beyond hobgoblins and goblins. The corpses have familiar features of withered limbs and skull tattooed faces.
OOC:
What would you like to do upon arrival? You can try to investigate what happened further, or look into the traps you were told to trigger, or anything else you would like to do. The area is rather large. I am assuming you are sticking near each other for safety in case something happens unless someone says they are wandering away from the party to investigate something far away but within sight.
You can attempt skill checks against a DC of 15, or 20 if it is obscure or harder to figure out than other pieces of information. Make a flat d20 roll and then mention in your text what ability score and background you think would apply and why. If I agree I will say so in my reply. If I disagree, I may propose something else I see on your character sheet. Either way, roll the d20 and add you level but nothing else. I will add the ability modifier and background if I agree
"I believe it would be wise to inspect the traps first. We wouldn't want our investigation to be set aside by blowing ourselves up now would we?" Salix will move to where the traps should be and try to determine whether they are in tact or have already been activated.
OOC:
I would apply Wisdom here both for the perception of finding the trap locations and then for determining their current state. I would also apply my Saboteur of Civilization background as this wouldn't be the first time Salix has dealt with setting, finding, or disposing of traps.
Oof, doesn't look like it's going to matter either way.
This comes to you easily, but you can't recall why lizardmen, who normally only attack if people invade their territory, would attack these hobgoblins and goblins who are clearly not invading their territory.
Looking around these seems to be a few things worth looking into.
There seem to be footprints of Varius sizes in the nearby mud, some surprisingly large.
You may try to find the hobgoblin leader's corpse for anything they may have.
You see signs of lizardmen involved in the attack. There may be evidence of why they were involved.
The force that cleaned up after the traps likely wasn't here to do this and this only, especially if they knew how to trigger the traps. There may be evidence as to where the attacking force went and what their goals were.
Salix examines the spears. While doing so, a bear suddenly comes out of the forest and walks straight up to him. A large blue scale falls out of its mouth as it roars non-violently and walks away. You realize that this is a dragon scale, and that this is a message from the high druid saying that the lizardmen are acting violent because a dragon is ordering them around.
Just as the bear leaves, a lizardman comes crawling out of the forest. It is very beaten, but not by traps. It looks to have the same kinds of wounds the fleeing hobgoblins did. You all realize the other lizardmen must have attacked it. In a strained voice, it says as best as it can in a language you all understand, "Krovikir...attack tower...says have way...to lower...shield...I no like...tribe working for dragon...please stop dragon..." The lizardman then falls over dead. Any attempts at checking its pulse show they are not asleep but dead.
Then he collected its effects, stripping the corpse as he methodically searched it for intelligence and valuables.
As you guys steel yourself for the return to the commander to warn them, take 2 incremental advancements. You were supposed to get one after the goblins, but I failed to inform you. You just got another one.
For those not familiar, an incremental advancement is essentially a small portion of leveling up. You can find the rules in the useful resources thread. Choose 2. These advancements can be what you planned to do at lv 2 or you can take something entirely different when you level up. Something very important to iterate is that these are temporary. When you actually level up, you lose all of them and then level up like normal.
I will start the journey back to the tower as soon as each of you commend here what 2 advancements you take. If you have any questions, I will answer them in the out of character general chat.
As you gather anything you have found, you start heading back to the tower in hopes of warning everyone of the attack. A little over halfway to the tower, a guard from the tower meets you, panting and bloody. "Hurry!" he says with almost no breath left. "The tower is in danger! A blue dragon flew over, and then the barrier suddenly turned off... One of the guards, Zvegdar, was a traitor. The commander managed to heavily wound the dragon with magic, blowing one of its wings off, but then the traitor took Glaezentorg and drove it through her! If you don't hurry.... they are going to kill all of the mages... in some ritual..." He suddenly runs out of breath, panting so much you can't understand anything else he barely manages to say. You realize there is no time to lose and he is too winded to provide any further answers.
As you get close to the tower, you see two clear issues. Atop the tower is magical light, presumably the ritual the guard mentioned. The only way is through the tower itself, which you can enter as the barrier is down. However, you see the blue dragon, heavily wounded and weakened, but still strong enough to rampage and attack. It is trying to find anyone else in the grounds at the base of the tower. You think you can sneak past the dragon and go straight for the tower, but you see the dragon is slowly regaining strength. What do you do?
Your question here... Public
Go for the tower and deal with the dragon afterwards
Kill the dragon now and then go to the tower
OOC:
Most of you agree to go straight for the tower. With the amount of urgency in the situation, and realizing that fighting the dragon without the whole party would be impossible, the remainder are convinced and agree to go to the tower first. You manage to time your assault to when the dragon is on the other side of the tower and are thus able to make a beeline for the door. A you approach, it is clear the barrier is down as there is no sensation of pain upon entering. You go inside to see a spiraling staircase, pausing at 3 different floors before reaching a door in the ceiling to enter the roof. Four lizardmen are stationed on the spiral staircase, and they all hear the door open and you all charge in. The lizardmen wielding spears are at the first floor and look to charge the party, while two mage-inclined enemies are at the second floor.
Dec 2, 2023 3:36 am
OOC:
You can try, but since you are engaged you have to roll a d20. If you get an 11 or higher, you can run away from the enemy. Alternatively, you get let them have a free attack on you. If you roll a 10 or less or don't want to give them a free attack, you can't get away from them. Also keep in mind the magicians are far away so if you did run up to them then you wouldn't have a standard action to attack with after you approached this turn.
To those who are not engaged with the savages want to do the same thing, they can, but the stairs are so narrow that you cannot get past the savages without at least engaging them briefly first.
TLDR: 3 options: (1) roll a d20, high = you can run away, low = you waste your movement and stay engaged (2) guarantee you can run away, but enemy gets a free attack (3) stay engaged
Hrafe swings with immense strength, but sadly swings just slow enough that the lizardman's shield catches it. It does take a little damage from the blow, as all good adventurers can deal a little harm with every swing of a melee weapon.
Makasi unfortunately misses as well, but her divine vigor causes her miss to be more harmful than Hrafe's. She went for the lizardman's chest but instead grazed its shoulder with a suprising amount of force.
OOC:
Hrafe deals 1 damage to LS1 and Makasi deals 6 damage to LS2.
The two lizardman magicians hear the commotion below. Their magic requires nearby targets, so they go from the third floor to the second, become nearby to all participants but still past their savage allies below. They conjure magic that will strike one target and might strike a second. They see the three in back and decide to try and pelt them with their acidic magic.
OOC:
Quick explanation of how the magicians work. They attack 1d2 nearby enemies, so the first roll is if they attack 1 or 2 targets. LM1 got 2 and LM2 got 1. The target of the attack takes 3 ongoing acid damage if the d20 roll is even, hit or miss. In this case, Edgar is taking ongoing acid damage. This means when his turn is officially over, he takes 3 acid damage and rolls a d20. On an 11 or higher, the onging damage stops. 10 or lower and he will get hurt next round again.
Salix, Edgar, and Raphel are now able to leap into battle.
Edgar's dagger drives deep into the lizardman that Raphel had blasted with acid. It falls off the side of the stairs and lands with a sickening crunch as it hits the ground. Luckily, it was dead before it fell over, but it is dead none-the-less.
Salix's attack strikes true and deals double damage to the other lizardman magician. It still stands and is not staggered, but definitely feels the blow.
Based on my understanding the the rules, distances aren't fixed but narrative. All combatants are at least far from everyone if not near. The only way they could be entirely out of range is if they are part of a separate combat entirely. So unless they flee the battle, all enemies are at least far away at worse. Because you are at the base of the tower, the only way to be far from the savages would be to leave the tower, which I will say is OK and will give you a +2 to all defences as you are using the door to protect yourself, but I'll roll a d20 at the top of the round and on an 11 the dragon outside will spot you and join the fight.
I will say you can use it outside of battle too, but it's a short range teleport (so the top of the tower for example would be too high) but using it outside of battle means you can't use it until the next battle is over. Inside of battle, it is a teleport, meaning you avoid opportunity attacks and don't need to roll to disengage. It's basically like disengaging and getting a guaranteed 20 on the d20.
It says "hit with an attack" not "take damage", so i interpret that to mean they had to roll an attack roll and land, and thus ongoing damage does not take your momentum. I think the time you got hit by the acid spray was one of the attacks cancelled by raphel's spell. Hrafe attacks his opponents exposed flank as it attempts to retreat. He carried his momentum to the remaining spellcaster a terrible roar building as he fell upon the creature.
Makasi's blow nicks the remaining lizardman savage, but doesn't land a solid enough blow to kill it. However, this distracts it enough that it leans into Hrafe's blade, striking it down with a heavy thump.
The last lizardman Magician gives a frustrated grunt and runs up the stairs and disappears through the ceiling, presumably to the top of the tower where the ritual is taking place. Filled with adrenaline and a drive to save the wizards up too, you all run up the stairs and follow it. The energy from the battle still active.
OOC:
This battle continues on the roof. 1 round will pass, making tht escalation die go up by one. Any abilities that are active for the remainder of combat, like Rage, are still active, which also means any once per battle features did not recharge nor can you take a quick rest. However, if you want you can rally on your way up, which means you can heal using one recovery but any future rallies only have a 50% of working (but you won't waist your actions trying)
When you reach the top, you see 4 humans i robes, a human welding an axe standing over them, and three lizardman magicians (one of which from some minor injuries seems to be the one from before). A magic circle has been drawn around the 4 humans, and two of the lizardmen are changing in the same reptilian language from before.
The axe wielding human looks at you and says, "Oh look, the adventurers the archmage sent. Sadly you could not save the commander, and you won't be able to save these people either." You see off to the side is thr body of commander Ameliefor. A large pool of blood underneath her makes you notice the blood on the axe the man is wielding. "Her second in command fought valiantly, but only for an ant that he is. Now come, meet your fate at the hands of Zvegdar! It is only a matter of time before we all bow to the Three!"
you can use smite evil once per battle, plus an additional number of times equal to your charisma modifier
That means if your charisma modifier was +3 and experienced 3 battles before your next full heal up (as one example), you could use it 6 times, once in each battle and 3 more times scattered as you want amongst all the battles.
Think of it this way. You get Cha Mod uses per day, plus one free use per battle
In this case, the attack missed, but if you use one of your daily uses (your once per battle use was spent already), you would do +1d12 damage and do half damage instead of damage equal to your level, or you can save it in case next round you think you will hit
"Time to meet the gods Zvedgar!"
Hrafe seeing the traitor carrying his promised prize was galvanized back into his furor as the spirits of his war shirt carried him into a bloodcrazed wroth. Savagebob, turns out that you don't need to worry about it this time. See below for why.
Hrafe runs upt to the traitor and manages to cleave straight into his chest. The single blow causes him to stop in intense pain, but just as he is about to fall over, he begins to laugh. It starts low, and grow and grows and smoke comes off of his body. Suddenly, his life force begins pouring out of his face as it reforms into some grotesque new form similar to that of a dragon but off in many ways.
"More glory for Skullbreaker! More glory for her Eminence!"
Hrafe butts the haft of Glæzentorg to create an opening, buffeting the creatures claws away. Wound up he followed up with a vicious lateral cleave to Zvedgar's scaly hide. Parting scales and flesh, severing an artery, he glowered maniacally at the draconic mutant drinking its lifeblood as he wrenched the blade free. Grinning wickedly as he espied its beating heart. "Your heart will be my feast!" The Beast had arisen in Hrafe, the guttural speech he uttered sounding at least as monstrous as his foes. "Glory to the Unstoppable Slayer!"
OOC:
Quick small ret-con. I just realized that the traitor has an ability that lets it ignore all effects of an attack once per battle. I'll show it below. it probably would have used that against the max damage crit Hrafe did earlier, but that attack caused him to become staggered, which let Hrafe use Glaezentorg's ability, so doing that would mean it would affect 2 attacks, so i'm going to meet in the middle and say he used this on the free attack from Glaezentorg after getting staggered, so the traitor did take the 24 damage but didn't take the 18 damage.
For whatever reason, Salix seems overwhelmed by choice. The traitor looks at Hrafe, a wicked grin on his mutant dragon-like face. "Are you sure you want to continue with me? If you fight me, maybe you finish me, maybe you don't, but you are trusting your allies to save the pathetic mages who will die in mere seconds from now." He laughs as he lashes out at thr zealous barbarian.
OOC:
RAAMtentacles is taking a while, so I will say he can act on the same turn as Hrafe and Makasi, but with last round's escalation die value. If Hrafe and Makasi both go before Salix acts, I'll have Salix uses Javelin of Faith and then have the lizardmen go.
At the end of this round, if any lizardmen are alive, the magic circle will activate and absorb the lives of the mages.
Jomsviking, just some information for your decision making. The traitor has 40 hp left. Unless you think your allies do not need your help at all, the only way you can kill him by yourself in one round is if you roll two critical hits and both roll at least 10 damage before being doubled by a crit... Assuming you don't have an ability I am forgetting. This also assumes the traitor doesn't roll 11 or higher when he disengages on his next turn, which would mean you don't get a second attack against him like above assumes.
The blow from the draconic mutant had Hrafe bleeding from his mouth and nose. But undaunted he staggered back up. "The Magi knew what they signed up for, this foe will become far greater if allowed to live. Help me, please! Horgalles, Grandfather of all Mankind help me!"
Hrafe once more continued his furious assault into the traitor cleaving once more through its heavily wounded torso, striking yet another artery in the process. "My companions, Strike him! Strike the traitor with all your might. Please help me for Lights Sake!"
I'm wondering if there's any chance the rest of us can slay them all without Hrafe's help, or if we basically have no choice but to gang up on the mutant now.
Secondary question -- Turn Undead wouldn't affect this big bad, would it?
It's up to you guys to kill the lizardmen. The rest of the party needs to deal about 47 damage before the end of the turn or the tower becomes owned by the Three.
The GM Public Notes tab shows all the enemies and how much damage they have taken (or if they are dead). The image is an abstract battle map. If you are next to an enemy, you are engaged with them. Another falls over and looks up from the ground. "You saved our lives and the tower." The third looks too exhausted to speak, and the fourth is able to stand just enough to see over the edge of the tower's edge. "It looks like the dragon the commander crippled is still at large. It is sniffing like it can still smell more people. We are not combattants. It is entirely up to you if you stay here with us until the dragon finds those people, kills them, and leaves, or if you brave one last fight."
OOC:
You are all now level 2 and get a quick rest. You all chose HP as one of your incremental advances, so none of you get more hp, but your recovery dice now roll 2 dice instead of 1 when you roll recovery dice for your rest. Also roll for recharging any non-daily talents and other abilities/spells. As for the other incremental advance you choose (see GM Public Notes), you can keep that option or change it, but you cannot have more than a 2nd level character can have. For example, if you can now have 5 powers at 2nd level and you had 3 at level 1, you can either choose 2 new powers and lose the one you got from the advance, or you can keep the one from the advance and only get 1 new ability. If this is confusing, undo all of your advances except for your HP and level up as if you hadn't taken any advances (but don't touch your current or max hp)
Raphel narrows his eyes as the abomination vanishes skyward, then turns his attention back to those atop the tower. After seeing to himself, he goes to question the rescued mages. "This tower is a weapon, is it not? If your reserves are too drained, teach me its workings and I will assist in wielding it against this dragon."
Rolls
Recovery - (2d6+1)
(41) + 1 = 6
One of the mages says, Sadly there is not enough time. Unless you can figure out what the lizardmen were chanting and take our lives as they had planned, the only way to attune to the tower to use it would take an hour. By then the dragon would be done below, making the attunement a moot point "
Dec 17, 2023 2:26 pm
"Then there's just one thing to do," Edgar says flourishing his knives in his hands. "Let's kill ourselves a dragon."
Dec 18, 2023 5:27 am
"Everyone, use your anointing oil, that dragon its not going to give us a bit of quarter. And we need every advantage."
Hrafe broke out his own anointing oil preparing to anoint his armor.
"Nothing but the dragon matters. Not even our lives. I don't want to die, but if we fall here the whole host of Heaven will be singing for our arrival."
Dec 18, 2023 8:21 am
Edgar nods and applies the oil to his fancy new dagger.
Dec 18, 2023 10:20 am
Pouring out the oil on his suedes Hrafe's teeth chattered. His blood was running blue and hairs stood on end. He was terrified and making no attempt to hide it. He carved runes into the stones of the tower, "Hrafe was here."
He swallowed the bitter taste of fear and collected some of the traitors blood, painting his face. He grabbed the main gate heaving it open. Resignation was on his face, he looked much older in that moment. He grasped the medallion around his neck and looked to his companions. "I am Hrafe Serpentkin, this auspicious day is one of prophetic importance. My people say it is the dragons duty to kill the serpent before it comes of age. But should the serpent slay the dragon it becomes the Hræzlyr, Terror. Do not interfere, if I am to die. It may be better that way." https://i.imgur.com/XzYOqPW.jpg
"Let me die without fear, as I have lived without it."
Hrafe took Glæzentorg in his hands and stepped out of the tower looking for his foe.
Dec 18, 2023 1:53 pm
You all rush outside of the tower to see a large blue dragon trying to tear down the building closest to the tower. You can tell from the way it is mildly limping that its wings are non-functional at this time (likely the work of the late captain) and it is already staggered. It's heightened senses detect you the moment you get outside of the tower. It looks up and notices the calm at the top of the tower and realizes its minion has failed. In frustration, it begins lashing out.
The dragon roars, acting quickly despite it injuries. It lashes out with its breath, lightning firing straight at its targets. It wheezes after doing so, likely unable to repeat this feat in its current state.
OOC:
Results: The breath only gets 1 target, attacking the 3rd person in initiatve, which is Raphel. If a 20 hits your Physical Defense (PD), which pretty sure that does, Raphel takes 15 lightning damage and is Dazed (-4 to all attacks) until he gets a 11 or higher at the end of his turn (a.k.a. until normal save ends) because the hit was a natural even roll
Makasi used lay on hands on Raphel. If I am not mistaken, Makasi spends the recovery and rolls and then Raphel gets the results in healing
Raphel recovers from the dazed condition. Note: the +1 from the dagger applies to spell recharge rolls, not all saves
Raphel feels a cool touch on his brow, then the pain from the dragon's breath fades into a dull throb.
OOC:
Whoops, good catch on the dagger bonus and the healing. My bad!
I would interpret it as me rolling the recovery, but it doesn't really make a difference who touches the virtual dice :P
Rolls
Lay on Hands - (2d6+1)
(16) + 1 = 8
Dec 19, 2023 2:27 pm
OOC:
for lay on hands, Makasi is actually spending her recovery and rolling her own and giving you the result, so I stead of your 2d6+1, you would have gotten 2d10+2 that Makasi would have rolled. To make this easier in the future, Makasi should roll in her post and you just take the result and heal that amount. For now, heal what I roll below instead of what you rolled
Makasi used lay on hands on Raphel - (2d10+2)
Quote:
...the recipient heals as if they had spent the recovery.
Hmm, I take this to mean that the person healed treats it like a normal recovery they spend themselves, rather than use the healer's dice. Your call though.
Dec 19, 2023 3:03 pm
OOC:
it says Makasi spend the recovery and Raphel would heal as if he spent the recovery. Both use the word spend so it is hard to say whose recovery dice are rolled. I feel like it is stronger if you roll Makasi's dice, but if she healed Hrafe for example Hrafe would have rather rolled his dice I think as I think he uses d12s (or at least there is a talent for barbarians to do that. I am ok with either interpretation, I just want to be consistent.
Reading again, I think I'll go with "target rolls their own recovery dice, but Makasi is the one who reduces her number of recoveries remaining, not the target
Dec 19, 2023 3:10 pm
OOC:
Yeah, my interpretation of Lay on Hands is that the recipient rolls their own recovery dice. The advantage is that the recipient doesn't lose that recovery. Your call, GM. :)
Dec 19, 2023 3:15 pm
OOC:
my original thought was that the paladin is the one losing the recovery so they are the one rolling, but seeing how others interpret it differently I'll go with paladin loses the recovery and target rolls their own
Hrage taunted the dragon even as its tail buffeted him in the chest. Hrafe managed to avoid the worst of the blow and set back to attacking it head on. OOC:
summary of below
Hrafe takes 19 damage
Makasi takes 7
The bite was because it rolled an even die on one of the attacks, and yes it is possible to get 2 bites if both claws had been even. It didn't bite last round because both were odd.
And yes, this round the dragon added the escalation die to its attacks
The four mages run out of the tower as 3 commoners come out of the building the dragon was trying to tear down. The commoners thank you over and over for saving their lives, and the mages reiterate their thanks they gave at the top of the tower.
"You have betrayed the light Wyrm, die in obscurity."
"For Ameliefor!" The berserk priest howled as he wrenched the blade free of the soft flesh of the dragon's maw. Pinning the creature by its writhing neck Hrafe cut the serpentine neck free of the body. He was drenched in blood now, his suedes and leathers ruined by the gore of the day. Panting wild eyed he lifted the head, free of the corpse. "Let us harvest this body. I would take its heart to make my feast and enough of its hide to have armor and a shield crafted but we have done this together, and we should all have a say." The pain of his numerous wounds did not seem to bother him at this time. "It is as I said, great heroes all meeting upon so auspicious a day. For how many can claim to have slain a dragon? We are all, great warriors and scholars. And this deserves celebration. What say we join in feast, here and now, upon Ameliefor's Triumph?"
