Act 1: The Mysterious Occurrences

Nov 7, 2023 5:02 pm
You were given an assignment to study in the library. You didn't find the head librarian, but an older student directed you to the right corner of the bookcases where you would find the relevant books.

You are sitting alone in the old library studying around one of the old wooden tables. The books smell old and the texture of the pager is familiar. But you also sense something else, it is very vivid, and you are pretty sure that it is not just your imagination.
Then you hear a noise and multiple strange creatures crawl out from under the table, on top of it, up the shelves and causing chaos in the library.

They kick over books as they scramble around and push vases and other artefacts on the floor. They hiss at each other and two of them are getting into a fight over a bunch of colourful feathers. There are between 6 and 12 of them in sizes between a large cat, to that of a pig.
OOC:
How do you react?
Nov 7, 2023 6:40 pm
Charlotte shrieks as she leaps onto a chair, ready to kick at any of the beasts if they were to come at her.

She cries out "Help!", hoping the librarian or some other adult is within earshot. Not seeing any adult coming to help, Charlotte dances from chair to chair until she gets to her backpack, distraught that one of the creatures was starting to nose its way inside the bag. "Give me that!" she exclaims as she snags away her backpack. Reaching inside she produces her wand.
OOC:
Charlotte intends to cast a spell to produce an animal cage big enough to hold the creatures. She's hoping that if such a cage is invoked, others can herd the creatures somehow into the cage. Still learning the system so does that sound reasonable and what would I roll?

OOC:

I would say that you would use Brawn to make a protective cage to hold most of them and target number would be 20
You could go for som Unnatural effect like their feet sticking to the floor, that would not be Reality-Breaking as summoning a cage

OOC:
And of course Brawn will be my lowest attribute at a d4! I'm happy to have Charlotte fail spectacularly at this attempt and pick up an Adversity point since she is a bit frantic and rushed. Hopefully other characters would be more reasoned about a solution here. Interested to see what failure looks like in this game.

Side questions:
-- Do we have a starting number of adversity points?
-- Mechanically, this action would be a Snap Decision (not a Planned Action).
-- Being Upperclass I believe gives you a +1 to Brawn rolls but I'm not sure if that applies to Magic rolls.
-- I haven't defined my wand yet, is that something I can go ahead and do (which would give me bonuses on some rolls)?

Rolls

Brawn - Magic Roll - (d4+0+d4+0)

(4) + (3) = 7

OOC:
--ADVERSITY TOKENS: Begin the game with 3 adversity tokens. Add 1 each time you fail a roll.
--Yes Snap Decision
--Stat bonuses carries over to magic
-- yep
-- Remember that your roll is open-ended, the 4 on a d4 can be rolled again

Dot squeals when the little creatures appear. She topples over the large stack of books she was researching. They noisily cascade to the ground. She draws her wand, waves it and yells out Illusio Lepido"
OOC:
Trying to summon some illusionary multicolored butterflies to flutter around and distract the creatures. Can we roll anything to try and identify the creatures?

At first Seraphine presumes this is a test but quickly it becomes apparent that it is not. Surely there is a reason for this intrusion, she surmises and decides to go the less violent route seeing as they are likely outnumbered.

"Please STOP! Is there something we can do that would make you go away?" she asks firmly but not threateningly yet.

"We mean you no harm and are merely trying to study." She then smiles sweetly with her radiant green eyes as she waits for a response, if any.
OOC:
She is attempting to talk the creatures out of harming any of them or even leaving them alone.
OOC:
Yikes, I did not mean to roll anything. I had that roll initially and then realized I needed to wait for the GM to add a difficulty, and then forgot to remove it.
OOC:
I'm thinking: Natural, massive, and instantaneous, for effects

Bex rises, a bit more slowly than the others, and watches the creatures movements. He can't stop them all, but maybe a few. Drawing his Wand he tries to cast a beast spell of some sort, something to calm or control him--he has always been able to speak with creatures after all (Wild Speak)
"Go back where you came from, there is nothing here for you:
OOC:
would that be charm or something else for the roll?

OOC:
Thanks for the answers! Charlotte will still likely fail but let me make it less catastrophic. I'll spend all three adversity tokens I had going into the spell check, add a +1 Brawn due to being upperclass, and explode the d4.

<Rolls>

So this puts (I think) the final result as a 12 (7 + 3 adversity tokens + 1 Brawn bonus + 1 from exploded die). This moves me up to the fail at -4 to -9 outcome. And then I get 1 adversity token back.

Dot has never heard about or seen creatures like these before
OOC:
The magic skill is Charm

OOC:
Feel free to gauge the target number, just like this. I assume that Dot have never done the spell before, (but if she has tell us about it) so I guage the target to be 14

Seraphine Everhart uses her commanding voice but they act like they are not understanding her. Besides they are busy causing a fuss
OOC:

I think it is fine to roll in advance. Roll that stat you think is relevant. The higher the better.
In this case imagine that you are asking a group of wild kittens to sit down and relaxe.
I would guage it to be a skill of 13 to 16 "A task where success is extraordinary—but decidedly possible for those who are truly skilled at it."

You have desided that your charager have the Wild Speak ability, please add it to your character sheet, so I can see how you got it.
Roll a magic charm roll (charm +1d4 + bonuses from wands ect if any)
These are no really creatures that you have knowledge about, but there similarities enough to set the target at 8

OOC:
Dot has summons a single butterfly to fly around to keep herself entertained but nothing as large as this before.

Charlotte E. Ashwood waves her wand to summon a cage around the creatures. She does manage to form a cage, but it is made from tissue paper and the creatures walk through the cage as if it was not really there. The cage collapses under its own weight and is torn to shreds.
OOC:
In the next hour she will find tissue paper in odd places, in her blouse, in her shoe, in her bag...

*rolling, he has a Brain Wand (haven't added it yet), so no other bonuses

Rolls

charms - (1d6+1d4)

(6) + (4) = 10

Not a great show for a perfect prefect is it?

Not to be outdone, or at least she hopes not, especially since she comes from a long line of illustrious wizards and witches, she bites her bottom lip and thinks hard. Drawing her strength from years and years of rich history, she takes her wolf's tooth wand and proceeds to make continuous figures of eight, hoping to mesmerize the nasty creatures with her clever distraction attempt. Besides the wolf at the tip is very scary indeed!
OOC:
I am hoping the brains stat will work in this situation as she uses her mind to recall an ancient spell passed down through the generations.
OOC:
Edit: Oh well. A prefect can try. 😳

Bex actually causes one of the creatures to stop running about. It stops to look at him, and then returns to under the table.

Seraphine Everhart tries to use logical thinking and knowledge gathering to distract a creature using magic.
OOC:
She is using the wrong stat. Charm is used to influence other minds.
Her mind is flooded with information, mostly from the books around her. It is as if every page from every book is being read out loud, very loud, at her. All at once!
After a minute of three, all the voices ends. About 5000 pages have been read to her all at once. When she returns from her auditory bombardment she leans two things:
1) In magic one must be precise in knowing what effect one is trying to do
2) While her fellow students did their very best to contain the chaos, all of a sudden all the creatures reacted to a sound, and returned to under the table - and were gone.

You are sitting in a corner of the library that has been trashed. Students and other staff are arriving to see what the commotion was all about. You perhaps have a minute or two before someone senior arrives to take charge of the situation and remove you from the scene.
OOC:
Remember when you fail a check, you will get a Adversity Tokens, that can be exchanged for a +1 to a roll at some later point
Nov 11, 2023 4:49 pm
OOC:
I added the token to my sheet.
"Well done Bex!" Seraphine wasn't one to lick her wounds but then her brain felt like it might explode. When she finally made some sense of it all she realized her folly. It must have been the stress of the high expectations placed on her shoulders. She could almost see her ancestors bearing down upon her, frowns lining their faces in their disappointment.

Clearing her head and composing herself she scans the room, happily mystified, as she takes a deep breath of relief. "Looks like they are gone."

It is then that her eye catches Dot; 's butterfly flitting around the room which makes her smile and enables her to gain her center once again.

Thanks. I tend to have a way with animals and creatures he runs a hand through his hair.

Dot looks around the mess of the room and looks panicked. She starts scurrying around picking up fallen books and scattered papers.
Realizing this is going to take to long she flicks her wand and shouts. "Fragor Finis" to try and clean up this mess...
OOC:
Unnatural +3: Could happen, but not naturally
Massive +7: A classroom or bigger
Instantaneous +0:
Witnessed +3:
+13
