Chapter 2 - The Investigation

Bay is distressed to see how upset Blossom is - but is also increasingly convinced that it wouldn't be safe for her to come inside the circle. She speaks to Blossom:

"I'm sorry, Blossom - it's just that I can see you're within a circle of mushrooms, and sometimes there is strong magic in those kinds of circles. I'm scared that if I come into the circle, something bad might happen to me. I don't think that's your fault, that you have any idea that something bad might happen - and maybe nothing would go wrong. But for now, I don't feel safe inside the circle."

"But! My friend and I are going to see if there's something we can do so that we do feel safe to come and play with you, and have a picnic with you!"

Bay then turns to Sky and says:

"I want to help Blossom - I'm worried about her. Who knows how long she has been stuck inside that circle of mouserooms..."

"Maybe we can find something to help inside that tree - but I'm scared to do that with the crow perched up there."

"We could go back inside the manor and try and find something we could use to trap the crow in? Maybe a net or a big bag? With the crow trapped, things would be a lot safer for us, I think."

"We could also ask for help from some of the other mice inside the manor - I could ask Captain Mortimer maybe? Or Miss Melody?"

"What would you like to do next? I'll follow your lead."

Sky thinks about it and takes a step forward. She kneels down to try and see if breaking the circle is a possibility. The blue coated mouse touches one of the mushrooms with the tip of her boot. Sometimes magic dissipates if it isn't held in a closed shape.

"It might be a good idea to find out more about this child. Mr Filmore surely has come across Blossom. I have seen her before, from the window and maybe the crow is part of the magic and not at all dangerous to her. I, however, do not fancy crow hunting. Have you seen that beast?"

Sky continues: "I'll rather go see if there is something that could help us in that tree, before returning and leaving the child to fend on her own."
OOC:
should she be able to break the circle, Sky crosses the mushroom line. If this doesn't work, she heads for the hole in the tree - slow and steady ;)

Bay keeps careful watch over the scene, her trident at the ready - in particular, she's ready to protect Sky should the crow attack...

When Sky touches the mushroom, she feels an odd compulsion, as if being in the circle is all she's ever wanted. There's an almost irresistible urge to persuade Bay to join her within the circle. However, the feeling passes as soon as she stops touching it.

As Sky uses her sword to cut one of the mushrooms and break the circle, the compelling sensation to enter and stay diminishes but doesn't vanish completely.

Bay observes that when Sky creates a small opening in the circle, the purple necklace on the crow glows faintly, then fades.

A small growl comes over Sky's lips as she draws back a bit. She feels her head clear and turns to Bay: "I think this magic compells whoever enters to stay in it forever. Even until starvation and death." She sits down on her mousy behind in the grass next to it. "Phew. For a moment there I thought about entering in the most wonderful way, then dragging you with me. Do you think it feeds on its prisoners?"

Sky takes up her blade again and wants to widen the opening. "MAybe I can go through and get the kid out, if the opening is enough. If I don't want to leave ... well... perhaps you'll have to drag us both... got any rope?" Bewildered by what she has just experienced, Sky does not really think about the black menace dozing on the dead tree.

"But the acoustics... they are dreadful in here." Hazel replays with a stern face, her brows high up in a mixture of genuine concern and strong rejection. "Let us walk outside. The fresh air will do wonders for your voice, and birdsong will inspire you to new heights." offering her arm, the brown mouse makes ready for a stroll. Maybe they would meet up with Sky and Bay.

This mystery about the house seemed also to include finding a gig for Melody. Maybe the others could help her with this. She already fought skeletons and talked to a vampire in the last 12h, while the other girls went out for a nice walk in the morning sun.

Bay is very relieved that Sky seems OK after having messed with the circle – she was holding her breath the whole time - and let out a squeak of relief when Sky came back unscathed! Bay likes to think of herself as brave and adventurous, but she didn't dare trying what Sky just did! Her admiration for her friend grows even more, having seen this.

Bay worries about the glow she saw in the crow's purple necklace - maybe if all the mushrooms are removed, the crow awakens from its slumber?

With her concerns, Bay turns to Sky and says:

"You're so brave, dear Sky! Yes, it looks like we may be able to help Blossom out of that circle. But please, let's not be hasty - we can be safer about how we do that, and that's better for all of us!."

"Let's go together back into the manor, find some rope, find Hazel, find a net ready to trap the crow, and then we can see about getting Blossom out of the circle."

The gong for Breakfast rings.

Miss Melody looks at Hazel and says, "Oh, all right. I suppose a short break will do me good, and by short, I mean very brief. I want to get back to practicing. We can also swing buy the dining room. Mr. Filmon leaves out pastries for the morning meal. "

Faintly in the distance you can hear a gong signaling breakfast.

Blossom still is encouraging you to enter the mushroom circle, and the crow is still sleeping.

"What a nice mouse he is." replies Hazel. "Let us find him and tell him what a good host he is."

Taking the singer out of the county's earshot, the young adventuress guides the way to the breakfast table while hoping to find Mr Filmon there as well.

Mr. Filmon
The dining room table is adorned with pitchers brimming with water, tea, and coffee. Two large plates heaped with pastries await the mice. The Captain sits comfortably, sipping coffee and enjoying a pastry. Mr. Filmon, the only other presence in the room, greets Miss Melody and Hazel with a warm smile. He states, "Good morning, breakfast is served. I also want to alert everyone about a peculiar incident in the courtyard. It seems something broke into the woodshed, causing a mess with the firewood inside." Pausing, he scrutinizes both Miss Melody's and Hazel's expressions, searching for any sign of recognition. Hazel senses that Mr. Filmon might suspect one of the guests to be involved in the woodshed incident, and he's attempting to discern who it might be.

After some contemplating Sky must admit, however much they want to help the child, without further investigation they should not proceed. It makes sense that the people here have seen the circle and Blossom and know something about the sinister magic that is at play. Also somebody might be able to provide means to deal with the crow. They leave Blossom and promise a swift return with food for her.

Quickly the mice make their way back to the house. Sky dashes into the house and the dining room. The mouse all but shouts to no one in particular:
"There is a child caught in a trap outside, who needs our help immediately. Who knows about her and her imprisonment and will help us get the little pup to safety?" ... while we also lighten her load by extracting the medallion piece...inconspicuously, of course...

The captain, Mr. Filmon, and Miss Melody appear unfazed. After an awkward silence, Miss Melody remarks, "Dear, the local children enjoy playing games. I believe you've fallen for a clever ruse. Don't let it bother you." With that, everyone resumes their previous activities.

"Your utter indifference astounds me. Do you not claim an artist's heart? It's not some sort of childish trickery, I tell you."
Sky's right eyebrow starts to twitch - a surefire way to tell she is losing her countenance with this group. "Bay and I have found a child on the very brink of starvation. She is helpless and alone, completely entranced by a vile trap. Come see, if you don't believe - it will take you all but five minutes to get there." Coldly she glances at the young singer. "If - that is - you can interrupt your comforts for such a time and if you can be bothered to think about somebody other than your own." Arrogant doe.

"And you ..." now she turns to Mr Filmon, "should at least check out the situation for appearance. We can't have a starving mouse destroy the imposing picture of this place, can we? It might also interest you to know, we might have found a crow's nest nearby. Is the safety of your patrons not your concern either?" I bet you aren't insured for any of this ... cheap old mouse Sky crosses her arms in front of her chest and glares at the guests. Not one of them is at least a bit worried for a child in danger? Really?

As she appears Hazel beams at Mr. Filmon as she desires something from him and doesn't want to get bogged down by who did what and pointing fingers for locking sheds and such ridiculous ill behaviour.
OOC:
Planned to sell Mr. Filmon an opera, but now doesn't seem to be the right moment.

Mr. Filmon walks over to Sky with a worried expression on his face. "Oh my, oh my! You've had an awful fright. Please, take a seat. I can speak for everyone here; we are very worried about you. The children in the area are known for playing some very clever tricks, and I truly believe they've got the better of you. Here, have a sip of this." He hands Sky some of his Raspberry Cordial, usually served at dinner. "This will help calm the nerves."

Miss Melody leans over to Hazel, not too quietly, and remarks, "Some people just can't handle spooky places. To be fooled by a child. I would be so embarrassed."

Bay swells with mousy pride at her friend Sky. Bay has been brave soaring over Muusdorf on the back of a sparrow, protecting her friends and family from attacking crows, from cats, from all manner of dangers. But to turn up in company like this and fight to help Blossom, to demand that these society-mice take them seriously? Somehow that's something Bay doesn't think she could have done herself. How lucky is she to be adventuring with such excellent friends?!

Bay backs up her friend:

"I was there! I saw it! There is an enchantment on that child - and saw it affect Sky too! Saw the light change in her eyes as she fought against it and won!"

"We don't want any cordial! We want you to come outside with us. We want you to bring us some rope so we can safely enter the circle with the child in it. Oh, and she's got a name, you know? Blossom? And a net. So we can be ready to catch that crow before it swoops down and carries us off!"

Captain Mortimer, finishing his meal, exclaims with a pirate-like tone, "What a racket first thing in the morning. Mr. Filmon, you better go take a look and fetch some rope. I believe these two are telling the truth, and I reckon it's your job to make things right. Being that it's your manor and all." with that Captain Mortimor gets up and leaves the room.

"I'd rather be a compassionate fool than a self-centered, cold-hearted bitch."

Her arms still crossed she resumes talking to Filmore. "What about the crow's nest, then? Will you at least have a look at that?"

One final chance Sky wants to give these uncaring people: "Anybody want to go have a look for themselves? Maybe help out a fellow mouse?" There were tinkerers and artists, captains and stewarts and not one of them bothered?
