OOC:
@Ishmann welcome to the story Let me know if you joined the boat as a paying passenger or signed on to work for the expedition. Fee free to add background details to a sceen as seems appropriate as well as minor NPC interactions
The boat is like any other designed to move cargo on a larger river. Low, wide, and filled with boxes, bundles, and people both crew and passenger. You happen to be one of the latter though the crew tend to treat you more like cargo. You have been aboard for a couple of days now and should reach the base camp in a couple more. The captain of the boat, a rough no nonsense though fair man, has told you to rest up as the boat will pass into inhospitable waters later today. There are a couple of other adventurers onboard and are expected to take turns on watch till you reach your destination.

Darz Helgar
You, dwarf.
You people see better in the dark than most so I want you on night watch tonight. Pick a partner, you'll be in charge.

And with that out of the way the captains heads aft back to the tiller. As you look around at your options for other passengers to pick you watch teammate you sigh. There is a rather pompus looking elf dressed in finery with a rapier at his waist who sits stiffly towards the prow of the boat. Laying across several crates is a large wolfkin with little to him other than his large muslced form other than his equally large sword. And finally there is merry duende, one of the small folk, chatting animatedly at one of the crew who is the only one who has not told him off or moved away.

Belagroff Bearjaw grunts his acknowledgment to the captain. Staying up all night on watch was not what he expected since he was a paying passenger aboard this supply ship. And the food! It was not up to his high standards, but it was better than starving.

When I get ashore the first thing I’m gonna do is find a good meal.. He grumbled as he rubbed his expansive belly.

Looking over the other passengers he spots a large wolfkin armed with a large sword.

Hoy there! Wolfman! I need someone to stay up with me on watch tonight. And you are my lucky volunteer, he said with a grin.

That is, if your are able to use that large butter knife with any skill. My name is Belagroff of Clan Bearjaw. Who might you be?
Nov 14, 2023 1:53 pm
Adrik Frostbeard
The large beastkin man rolls his head to the side to look at you and a deep low rumble accompanies the words You may call me Adrik. Do you challenge me sword skills? If not then let me sleep. And closing his eyes again proceeds to do just that by the sound of his slow deep breathing.

The fancy looking elf glances at the wolfkin swordman then you and back to the river with a slight sniff just as the captain calls from the rear That means the other two of you have got the dawn patrol. The duende is in charge.

The rest of the day passes leisurely and Belagrof finds a corner to lean against so as to get his face out of the sun and get a few hours of shut eye.

You are awoken by the rocking of the boat and looking up you see the shore a short span away. The crew busily ties the boat up and drops a long plank across the gap. According to the red and blue sky you have maybe a half an hour of daylight before full dark.

Darz Helgar
Relieve yourself and get your grub. You are welcome to sleep on the shore but me and the crew stay onboard and shove off at the first sign of trouble.
You dwarf, your watch starts in a couple hours. If you see any trouble just ring the bell
and he gestures to the iron bell hanging from a pole set into the stern of the boat.

Adrik Frostbeard

Adrik rises from his bed of crates and moves to the shore, sniffing the air. I will be back in time for our watch. You may accompany me if you can be silent and still he says as he glances down at you.
Nov 14, 2023 7:30 pm
Bellagroff watches Arik snif the air and his curiosity is peaked. Is he smelling food? The thought starts a rumble in his stomach.

Don't let my size fool you Wolfman. I can be as quiet as a mouse if need be. Sure, I will accompany you. As long as we are back in time for our watch.
Lead the way.

Adrik Frostbeard
The two of you set out and Adrik begins, , , stalking. The river banks are lined with trees and shrubs which Adrik slides through almost effortlessly.

Roll a test, 2d6, for moving quietly, and 3d6 for finding animals or tracks
Nov 15, 2023 7:53 pm
Huffing and puffing, Belagroff does his best to keep up with Arik. For a large beast he sure moves quickly!

Belagroff move with amazing skill, somehow finding every loose stone and brittle twig, and expands his awareness to new heights catching even the slightest . . . Squrl! . . . movement with his heightened focus.

Adrik Frostbeard
Akrik seems less than impressed. Why don't you keep searching around here. I will move to intercept the prey you flush out. Ok? Bits of sarcasm and exasperation tinge the rough mans voice.

He quickly padds off into the woods and you continue in your activity to help as you may. Then you catch the faintest of scents of wood smoke. Checking again you are certain the smell is not coming back from camp, but up ahead. Looking around you spot Adrik dozens of yards away, half concealed with muzzle raised sniffing the air, who glances back at you. Looking towards the source of the smell he cocks his head, looks back in the direction of the fire smell, then back to you as if asking your opinion.

Belagroff nods his approval and grips Baby tightly with both hands. He peers into the woods where the smoke smell is coming from.
Nov 17, 2023 3:49 am
The trees are in the way of noticing anything so Belagroff moves cautiously towards the smell. Glancing back you note Adrik is already out of sight again. You creep along looking around for anything problematic.roll a test to spot anything, 3d6 for your trait.

Peering into the woods as he tries his best to remain quiet, Belagroff looks for signs of trouble.

Rolls

Spot - (3d6)

You instantly freeze as you spot a flicker of firelight. The source of the smoke smell. Searching for guards you are surprised there are none and double check to be sure. The problem is that the fire is in a dense corpse of trees and as you search you catch a few faint voices discussing something. The voices are too low and the distance too great to pick out what is being said.

Roll a test if you want to get close enough to hear without being noticed or let me know your plan
Nov 18, 2023 4:28 am
What is that I hear. Voices! I’d better try to get closer so I can hear what they are saying.

Belagroff inches his way forwards hearing mixed voices

Hush now you lot. Just remember how hard your lives were before we gave you this job. We wait for a bit before sunset then go launch the raft. Same as last time. Just get the guards distracted then we slip it, knock them out and make off with the goods.

Female 1 Yeah, that's what you said last time too. Only. . . . That was a lot of blood and he didn't get back up

Marta Peskryk
Listen Gyna, we do what we can to be reasonable but it they struggle we have to protect ourselves. These merchants have all the money and the guards signed up for this so it's only fair if they get hurt. It's what they get paid for. Who pays us??? No one, that's how. So you just get in that tattered old dress and make sure to be distracting at the right time or you don't get your cut.

As you move to a point you can see a few of the figures you make out a man an woman, from the tones it sounds like they are in charge of things here, heading away from camp.

Sephek Kaltro
You best get them in line Marta. If one of my men gets hurt cause they cant do there job we'll just dump em and get more. There's always more poor folk in need of a job. I'll go get the boys ready

Marta Peskryk
Now sounding much weaker with a trace of panic in her voice Don't worry Sephek. I'll make sure the job is done. Haven't I been a good crew chief. Twice as good as that old hag Janna . . .

They continue talking as they head upstream along a small trail away from the campfire and the 3 other women around the pitiful flame.

Do you want to follow the two or wait till they are gone and confront the three women or head back to camp or something else ?
Nov 19, 2023 9:41 pm
I will wait until they are gone. Then sneak off to find Adrik to let him know what I’ve heard. I think the best course of action is to head back to camp, let the captain know of the bandits plans and set a trap for them. That is unless Adrik has a better idea.

You regroup with Adrik who confirms your report, having heard much the same but arriving a bit earlier he adds that he heard mention of 5 pirates pluss the captain and women.. You recount your tail to the sailors and a quick conference commences. Basically there is a split on whether to try and ambush the pirates or simply sail off down river and avoid the entire situation.

Darz Helgar
The captain turns to Belagroff and Adrik. You saw the river rats, do you think we can take them?

The boat has a crew of 6 and besides you and Adrik there are the other two passengers

Belagroff looks at the crew and other passengers. He grins and says,

A fair fight would be risky. But then again only fools fight fair. We have the upper hand cause we know their comin'. I say we lay a trap for them and rough em' up a bit.

Captain Helgar pulls a couple of his cree aside but tells you he doesn't want to inform the rest or the other passengers. He suggests you and Adrik go to sleep early and he will try to "keep the women from disturbing you".

Adrik is a bit annoyed at the ruined hunt but seems excited about the prospect of upcoming conflict. You both get a decent meal and get to your beds early enough to be down by time the women arrive on a ragged homemade raft looking miserable and pathetic.

Let me know any preparations and plans you want to make before going to bed. Do you stay awake, tell the captain to wake you at a later time, sleep on the boat or on shore, etc...

OOC:
I think i will sleep for a few hours on the boat.
After i wake up, I'd like to talk to Adrik, the Captain and his crew to make plans to ambush the pirates once we see the women arriveon the raft. I think we need to come up with a signal word to activate our ambush.
Nov 21, 2023 10:13 pm
OOC:
It is close to sunset now so the women should arrive within the next hour or so. Make plans now.
Captain Darz shrugs at the need for a signal but likes the idea of an ambush.
