The Game System: Legend of the Five Rings 5E (With a pinch of house rules and homebrew setting changes. If I get something wrong, feel free to shout at me!)

The Pitch:

The year is 1204.

In 1170, Iweko I became empress. She reigned for twenty five years, before an untimely assassination by unknown parties in the winter season of 1195. Given the already unstable political structure of Rokugan at the time, the country was thrown into disarray.

Empress Iwako II rose to power. A lesser trusted, and even lesser known, sister of the previous Empress. A young and sickly woman, she had trouble maintaining a grip on Rokugan. She needed a miracle, but time quickly slipped away before all trust in her fled.

Until chance came in the form of Kakita Ira, the famous swordsmith. The youngest of four in the Kakita family, Ira had a reputation for making dazzling weapons. Her katanas were legendary and word of them spread far and wide. Yet, despite all her attempts at surpassing her siblings, she would always live in her family’s shadow.

In the year 1198, Ira found a meteor and a plan formed in her mind. In an effort to create the greatest weapon, one forged of metal from the gods themselves, she extracted the ore from the meteor and created her greatest weapon. She didn’t know of the taint the metal brought.

Those who wielded the sword were cursed to run a bloody rampage. The first murder was her mother, and the second the Kakita’s champion. From there she cut a bloody swath across Rokugan. Behind her, many of the disenfranchised gathered.

This was Empress Iwako II’s chance. She would take the sword from Kakita Ira, and drive the curse out. Through putting down the rebellion and restoring order, her people’s confidence would be restored. The question was, how?

To do so publicly by enlisting the aid of the Kuni Purifiers would suggest she favoured one clan above the other, while using the Yogo Wardmasters would give her a reputation of cloak and dagger politics. Instead, she chose to petition volunteers from the divine clans. She would provide an opportunity for honour and glory, while presenting herself as a gentle and caring ruler.

She even went so far as to do so when Kakita Ira had retired for recuperation in the early spring.

---

The game will feature a three act short structure. Act one will be arriving in the village where Ira is resting, gathering information and heading to her manor. The second will be the manor itself, and the confrontation with Ira herself. The third will be the aftermath and transporting the sword to safety.

Adult/Controversial Themes: Murder, death and revolution. The usual stuff. :p

But seriously, while this is going to be a relatively light hearted adventure for L5R, it has the potential to have some adult themes. Fair warning.

Character Restrictions:
- No Kakita family.
- Preferably something from the core rulebook, but if you want to play something else let me know and I’ll review it.

Specialised Software and Requirements: None. I’ll probably make a discord for us though!

Player Experience Requirement: None required. As I said before, I use a lot of house rules and homebrew edits to the setting so if you do have experience please have an open mind.

How to apply: Simply post your interest below, or if you’re feeling adventurous you could even write up a character concept. I don’t tend to go for first come first served, if that helps!

Welcoming marginalised communities: All marginalised communities welcome!

Hello, I would be interested with the caveat I've no familiarity with newer editions and last played so long ago I'll have forgotten everything I knew anyways. :)

Reading through the description puts me in mind to play something like a gruff Crab combat-heavy--his people fight back horrors constantly. How hard could it be to hold his own against some supposedly cursed sword? Sounds like an easy way to earn honor for his clan.

What school rank are you thinking?

A concept I have toyed with: An Asahina Artificer obsessed with Asahina Yajinden’s legendary weapons rumored to lurk beneath the Asahina temple. The craftsman aspired to imitate Yajinden’s prowess while redeeming his stained reputation, perhaps even finding a place within the fabled Asahina Sohei. To bring a cursed blade to rights would surely be in the spirit of reclaiming such a lofty aspiration?

I'm not 100% settled on school rank yet, was thinking I'd gauge character concepts before I pin it down, but I'm thinking between 1-3. I'll definitely be giving you some xp to play with. Hope that makes sense?

Just in case this goes under the radar.

Maybe we can use the 5e Rokugan rules? In this case I would be in. ;)

Uh... no. I mean we'll be using the L5R 5e rules, if that's what you mean? :p

Seriously though, we could use another player (we've got 3 at the moment) so if anyone's interested, feel free to throw something our way!

The setting is really great. I just don't like the rules part of this system. Have fun! :)

I have often wanted to try l5r. I have quite a few games at the moment and wasn't sure if I would have time to try a new system hence orginally not commenting, but if you need one more for the game to run I can try.

(If someone else is also interested may be best for me to give it a shot another time however)

I think we'll be getting started in early December, so you've got some time to think about it. I'm doing some finishing touches to my plans before I finalise!
