The barmaid looks sad while she directs you to Tina's home, she claims not not to know where the husband is, but you might suspect there is more to that story.

It is not hard to find the place you are looking for, it is a small house with a large yard that could accommodate more than one stage-coach, though it is currently empty.

When Tina answers the door she recognises Albert and immediately becomes defensive. "I'm sorry." She says, not sounding at all 'sorry'. "If Humphrey owes you money it is not my problem. He is not my problem anymore."

Obviously she thinks you are collecting on (old) bar-debts, or something.

"What do you mean, not your problem anymore?" Albert asks, a bit confused. "I'm just here to talk. Is he not home? Where is he?" He asks her, not wanting to get into the details.

- Roald and Albert -

"I had had enough of his funny business. So I kicked him out, didn't I." Tina says, also not wanting to go into detail. "You can find him, drunk, at the establishment on Postern Way." For someone who is 'not her problem' she seems remarkably well informed as to exactly where he is.

You —neither as a bartender, nor an ex-drunk— can not be expected to know every establishment in the city, and most of the bars and inns are known by varied names —many interpretations of the crude, hand-drawn signs— but neither of you knew there even was a drinking hole on Postern Way.

"The establishment?" Albert asks. "Is that a new bar I haven't heard of yet? Either way, thank you for your help, Tina. We won't take up any more of your time."

After Tina closes the door, he turns to Roald. "I guess we're going to Postern Way then." he says with raised shoulders.

''Postern way, you say... Never knew there was a bar there. It's not one of those exclusive places, is it? You know, with the fancy clothes and stuff?''
''Shall we have a look, Albert? ''
'' Oh and Tina, do you like us to deliver a message? Some terms and agreements maybe?''
Dec 28, 2023 3:12 pm
Tina shrugs uncomfortably at the talk about not knowing the place, but does not seem surprised by your ignorance.

"Clothes? You trying to be funny!" Tina exclaims at Roald's suggestion. "I have nothing more to say to him." She says, firmly closing the door.

Roald has to ask for directions finding the postern way. They arrive in the not so nice part of town.

'' no wonder I didn't know of this watering hole'' he is thinking while splashing through the mud... Or what he hopes is mud.
Houses here are all the same and all filthy there is only one house that might be a bar, a wooden sign hangs above the door not moving with the wind. The hinges are corroded to the pole, and the sign says... Actually it's just wood. There could have been a drawing once, but that is long gone now.
He looks at Albert with a concerned face, no words are necessary, he knows they are thinking the same thing.
He pushes open the door, it's stuck.
Roald pushes harder and the door gives way. With a loud bang it smashes into the inner wall. Everybody in the bar stares at the two men in de door.

An old couple in the street eye you suspiciously as you approach the only place that could potentially be what you are looking for. They hurry away, shaking their heads in disapproval.

"Shut that door." Says a scantily clad women lounging nearby. She barely looks up at you as you enter, though a large, intimidating looking, man standing near the back entrance glares at you as though you did something wrong.

While there is some drinking going on, it is clear that is not the main reason these men are here, in this 'house of ill-repute'. You see one man being lead upstairs by a giggling, young women —wearing almost nothing at all— and the other men watch as she leaves, apparently waiting their turn. No one is talking to each other nor making eye contact.

Roald shuts the door and scans the room. He doesn't know how the coach driver looks.
Let's hope he is not upstairs...
'' Do you see him, Albert? Maybe we should be careful with what we drink here... I've been in places like this before, and the water tastes more like beer than the beer. The color is also darker dan that of the beer. ''

Albert scans the room. Normally he'd order a drink first. But after Roald's words of warning he decides to cancel that plan "That might be him there." He says pointing to a table nearby where a man is sipping something from a filthy glass.

He heads towards the guy. "Good to see you again, Humphrey. Although, a different location would have been preferable... Do you have a moment to talk privately?"
Jan 3, 2024 12:25 pm
Humphrey starts and then looks embarrassed at being found in such a place, then he bristles as Albert mentions it.

"Private?" He says, sounding interested. He knows that you and Tina are... friends... or at least friendly, and —even though he knows this is wishful thinking— may be hoping you have come from her, on her behest.

"Yes." He says, and leads you out the back door, greeting the doorman in a familiar way. This door is much better maintained, and leads into an alley off Postern Way. The alley is shaded and clearly makes for a more circumspect way into the ... well let's be honest and call it a 'brothel' —though that is maybe a generous term.

It looks like Humphrey wants to defend his being there, and, if you don't stop him, he will launch into a self-righteous speech.

Albert notices Humphrey taking a deep breath, most likely to defend his actions, and stops him in his tracks by raising a hand as a stop sign. "Honestly, I don't need to know. We're just here to ask a few questions." After a short nod from Humphrey, he continues.

"You may or may not know this, but I used to be an initiate of the church of Raynor. And recently I've been reconnected with my faith in a big way." He starts off saying, hoping the mention of Necusle would raise fewer questions from Humphrey's side. "Raynor has tasked me with cleansing a location fouled by darkness and to cleanse it, we need to get to Necusle." He waits a second for a reaction to this, then goes on.

"I'm sure you can recommend us a route, seeing as you're a coach driver. Preferably a route that's a bit more discreet. We are willing to sign up as temporary guards if that helps. What can you tell us?"
OOC:
I hope I approached this the right way. Maybe you guys had something else in mind?

"Really? You? Raynor?" Humphrey says, sounding surprised. "The god of fire?

"Is that why your bar burned down?" He asks, looking at you 'suspiciously' —though it is probable he is joking. "I liked that place. It was handy, you know, before getting home."

When you mention Necusle Humphrey quickly looks around to make sure no one else is listening before answering in hushed tones. "You really don't want to go there. Bad place that." But, when he sees you are are convinced you have to, he relents.

"I have never been that far." He declares, loud enough that any unseen listener would definitely hear that bit. "Not much regular travel to places like that. I have heard of merchants and trader making the run, but they tend to lie about where they are going and then hope to, somehow, convince, entice, or coerce anyone who signed up to stay with them after they find out the real destination. If you go around asking about that place people will get suspicious."

He thinks for a moment. "But it is possible that a merchant that already plans to trick people into such a trip would welcome some who are 'willing'? I don't really want to be associated with that, you get me? But, maybe I could ask about and find such a group? You would have to do me a favour... of a delicate nature... first though.

"You remember my wife, Tina? She won't talk to me. Maybe you can talk to her, persuade her to see reason? If I can just explain..." He turns to Roald. "She always like you, Roald. Said you were a 'good man'... which seemed a bit hypocritical to me, but you can't expect logic from women, right." He tries to grin in a good-matured way.

"What do you say?"

''I don't know man... We passed by your house on our way here and she was pretty decisive about how she feels about you at the moment.
Do you have some sort of bargaining chip we can use? Maybe then I'm willing to talk to her again. How about a promise to sober up, say goodbye to the bottle. It's not easy, that I know, but if you are willing to make a grand gesture, that might be it. ''

Roald looks Humphrey dead in the eye, Humphrey quickly averts his eyes.
'' Think about it for a moment, is she worth it? ...''
Roald gives the man some time to get his thoughts straight.

At the mention of Raynor being the cause of the burning bar, Albert gives Humphrey a deadly serious stare "It's possible."
He lightens up again when the conversation continues.
"Perhaps I can also offer a prayer or a blessing." Albert adds to Roald's idea. "After all, Rayor is the god of conquest. And what is love but a conquest of the heart, no?" He looks at Humphrey expectantly. "That is... if you are willing to join Raynor's cause."
Why not turn this favor into a virtue? He thinks to himself a bit smugly.

- Roald -

"Oh, yes! Definitely!" Humphrey says, quickly tossing out the last of the 'beer' he brought with him to the alley. "I would do anything for her.

"Though it is a little unfair her objecting to my drinking, you know she likes a bit of a drink herself, and often comes home blotto." This last sentence is spoken in a sullen undertone and not really directed at you. He completely ignores the nature of the establishment you found him in and that 'drink' may not be what got him thrown out. His promise also came very easily.

- Albert -

Humphrey is a little freaked out by your answer, and dismissive, at first, of you offer of a prayer, until you explain more.

"'Conquest', you say?" Humphrey says, sounding suddenly interested. "'Of the heart'? I could get behind that. What do I do?"
Jan 5, 2024 4:32 pm
''Ok Humphrey, I will speak on your behalf. Just one more question, will Tina argument that you came here for a reason other than a drink? Because in that case I will have to change my plee''
Jan 5, 2024 4:59 pm
- Roald -

"Here?" Humphrey says with a complicated look of disgust on his face. "I am here because I have nowhere else to stay, and no carriage with which to earn silver for somewhere better. Both of those problems are Tina's fault."

He is trying to skirt around what are are asking, but both of you know the women are the reason for this place, and it is true that Tina liked a bit of a drink of an evening and, unless she has had a sudden change of heart, can not really complain if all he was doing was drink.

"Roald, can I have a word with you in private for a minute?" Albert asks as he steps away from Humphrey.

A bit more quietly, he tells him. "Maybe Humphrey can be our driver? He knows the way and we can promise him some coins for his troubles. It would keep him away from the brothels for a while so he can think about his actions. Tina might like the idea in that regard too. What do you think?"
