Character Generation Thread

Nov 23, 2023 2:45 pm
RACES
You may play an aasimar, human, dwarf, elf, gnome, goblin, half-elf, half-orc, halfling, orc, or tiefling. Other races simply do not fit the theme of this campaign. For purposes of this campaign, you may alter any of these races as desired with optional racial traits for the race in question.

CLASSES
You may play alchemists, arcanists, barbarians (unchained), bards, bloodragers, brawlers, cavaliers, clerics, druids, fighters, gunslingers, hunters, inquisitors, investigators, kineticists, magi, mediums, mesmerists, monks (unchained), ninja, occultists, oracles, paladins, psychics, rangers, rogues (unchained), samurai, shamans, skalds, slayers, sorcerers, spiritualists, summoners (unchained), swashbucklers, vigilanties, warpriests, witches, or wizards. Age does not prohibit choice of class. All characters begin at 1st level with maximum hit points for their class and Constitution scores.

ABILITY GENERATION
Ability scores are generated by rolling 4d6 six times and arranging them as desired. Once your scores are placed, apply the stat modifications given below for your chosen race. All characters then receive +2 Dexterity, -2 Strength, -2 Constitution, and -2 Wisdom age modifiers.

LANGUAGES
As this is the Forgotten Realms, consider additional human languages appropriate to your character's origins. For example, those from Calimshan often speak Alzehdo, Thorass (Auld common), and Auran, where characters hailing from Waterdeep might be fluent in Illuskan, Chonadathan, and/or Thorass.

NOBILITY
If you desire to play the child of a human noble family of Waterdeep, you have plenty of choices: https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Nobility_of_Waterdeep and this may affect your choice of skills.

TIMEFRAME
Play begins in Waterdeep, c. 1370 DR.

DEITIES
We will be using Forgotten Realms deities. A fairly complete list is at https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Faer%C3%BBnian_pantheon. For domains, just try to match them up to the 3rd edition domains for the deity in question as best you can. Ask me if you need some assistance.

MONEY
Money is determined randomly, based on class. Even the child of a noble family might not necessarily be rich, and a street urchin could have come into an unexpected windfall.

The following are new feats intended for children. If any of them interest you, let me know and I will provide more information. If you take a child feat, when you move into the adult category or each time you gain a level, you can choose to lose a child feat in favor of a new feat. Note that you are not required to take Child feats. You are welcome to take regular feats instead, but this adds some flavor to the campaign.

CHILD FEATS
Ambitious Grip - You can wield weapons as if your size category were an adult for your race.
Animal Partner - You have a powerful bond with an animal friend.
Antic Companion - Gain mischief points when your animal companion scores a natural 20.
Arcane School Dropout - Though you quit arcane schooling, you still recall a few tricks.
Bookish - Bonus to a skill in which you are trained.
Brash Temperment - Bonus to Intimidation.
Childlike Innocence - Bonus to Bluff and Diplomacy checks.
Combat Antics - You have access to a special point pool called a mischief pool.
Coven Initiate - Use a witch's hex once per day.
Effortless Cooperation - Borrow skills from allies.
Feral Upbringing - Gain bonuses on interactions with certain animal types.
Head of the Class - Bonus on initiative and Knowledge checks.
Incorruptible - Bonus against charm, compulsion, or possession.
Mature Bearing - Bonus on Bluff and Diplomacy checks made against adults of your race.
Noble Scion - Bonus on Knowledge (nobility) checks and another special benefit that varies based on family.
Precocious Youth - Reduce aging penalty in one ability score.
Sibling Rivalry - Gain a bonus on one roll or check that an ally attempted.

That about covers everything available at 1st level and we'll address other stuff if and when it comes up.

For those unfamiliar with Pathfinder, you can find all the rules that you will ever need here and here. A guide to character creation is available here. As noted above, many races and any third-party classes are not permitted, so please bear that in mind.

"It doesn't matter how much you steal, or how often. It matters what you steal, and how you fence it."

Trait: Finding Haleen(it seems perfect considering the setting)
Trait: Bloody Minded
Human Feat: Precocious (Strength)
First Level Feat: Precocious (Constitution)

Crow is a Chondathan orphan who serves as an acolyte for the cult of Tempus, and by extension the cult of Tyr Even-Handed who was Tempus as a living man. Given to the temple by his mother Haleen during the Time of Troubles. He chaffed under such rigid discipline and ran away. At first he starved, then he stole to live. After five years as a thief he no longer stole to live. He lived to steal. It wasn't about the money, it was the thrill of the caper. And the prestige of a unique prize for his early retirement.

Hi Everybody,

Glad to join you all.

I think I'm aiming to create an Investigator who's a medieval pesky kid genius a la Encyclopedia Brown or Nancy Drew (actually my favorite was named Jupiter Jones).

Let's get some rolls:

I've gone ahead and submitted Tom:
Quote:
The son of Reese Everdeen, a minor sergeant in the City Watch, Tom grew up listening to stories of his father's tussles with petty criminals. While his father tried hard to mold Tom into a future watchman, the boy unfortunately stayed small and scrawny (something Reese blamed on the boy's late mother). The only area where he didn't appear to disappoint his father was his skill with a bow--so, Reese jokingly gifted him with a surplus one from the watch which he could barely carry. But otherwise, he was generally hopeless with a sword and shield.

Even worse in his father's eyes was the fact that Tom preferred reading to any kind of sport. He was constantly scolded for the fact that he was reading far too much. Tom still had nightmares of the day his father learned his eyes were already worn out to the extent that he was going to need specially-made spectacles. Tom couldn't help it though, reading was his greatest joy whether it be books on language, nature, medicine, or science (the latter of which he experimented with to mix up extracts when his dad wasn't around). Tom's absolute favorite remained crime stories those that his father told and whichever written ones he could get his hands on. He loved hearing about the cunning of the villains and the brilliant ways that constables managed to catch them.

By the time he was seven, Tom was no longer just listening to Reese's cases but asking very detailed questions--at first this impressed his father, then seemed to worry him that Tom was trying to plan out how to do the same crimes without getting caught. That only led to a closer eye being kept on him. But by time he was nine, he was suggesting a few things that his father and his men had missed. After the third time the boy's hunches earned Reese an accolade from his superiors, the sergeant began taking the boy seriously and bringing him questions from his active cases for his input.

However, frustratingly, Tom's found it very hard to get anyone else to take him at all seriously. It probably doesn't help that he's proud, arrogant, and constantly certain he's the smartest one in the any room regardless of their age.

As he grows older, he's only growing nosier; his obsession with justice and the rule of law leading him to insert himself into business where he doesn't really belong and where it might even be dangerous. His dad has lectured him on this repeatedly, that he needs to get a sense of perspective and to know his place.

It's likely that sometime soon he's going to learn a sharp lesson; hopefully he survives it.
@WhtKnt I've got a (stupid) question about starting equipment: I've gone ahead bought standard weapons/armor for Tom; but that seems sort of out of synch with what he'd be carrying around on a day-to-day basis (regardless of my backstory on how he might have gained access to weapons, etc.). So, is equipping the kids like typical adventurers and assuming there'll be a plot point to explain why they're all geared up the right way to go? Or should I revise that to just give him items he'd have around on a typical day and a bunch of money he could buy things with later?
Nov 27, 2023 1:21 am
@WhtKnt I've the same question as @MinMin. I have the character pretty much created, but am unsure of what equipment, weapons, armour, etc she would have, if any. Also, if they are starting in their home city then I would imagine she is living in with her "family" (whoever that might be)

Glad to game with you, everyone. I'm brewing up an Aasimar with the Scion of Humanity racial trait so he's more distant and less straight up angel-ish. Oracle seems fitting. I'm also thinking in the same kind of "discovered magic" vein that runekyndig is in.

Yeah, let's do a "day-to-day" kind of thing and we will work the acquisition of items into the story (or, if you prefer, you can say that it was an inheritance, or something similar). Note that not all of you have to be from Waterdeep originally, you are just there now. You may be the child of an ambassador to the city or a semi-permanent visitor.
Nov 27, 2023 2:44 am
Thanks! I've cleared out my weapons and armor now then to see what I've a chance to acquire during play.

I like the day to day approach. Looking forward to it.

Will this be some sort of solo thing? Establishment arcs?

Anyone want to be siblings with the dashing rogue?

I've submitted my character, and it is kinda a first draft as I need to finish off some of it. Trying to remember how PF rules work, and get thru reading the material. Here is the intro to;

Gern Kempe, Gnome "Gunslinger"
Stocky, with a typical Gnome build and attitude.
Gern has lived all her life in Waterdeep, and she has the scars to prove it. When folk ask about family she never gives a clear answer cause her family is the whole Gnome community. They are all her brothers, sisters, mothers and fathers, and it is one of those who saw enough to think she was worth taking a risk on. So, now she is an apprentice to the Artificier, one among his many students. Her status may be low, but she works hard and earns her place, and he can see her innate skills already showing.

I am going to be a Female Swashbuckler Northlander human from Caer Callidyrr named Selena Silver. She'll have the sailor background. She has always dreamed of running her own Pirate crew after being a part of the Salty Sharks for a long time as second mate to Captain Kidd, so adventure and combat has always been in her blood as being a Northlander. She joined the Salty Sharks after being caught as a stealing treasure and was originally a slave girl to a wealthy noble who planned to use her as one of the girls at one of his pleasure brothels in town when Captain Kidd bought her off the noble for a pretty penny as payment for her misdeed. Plus, he noticed the bruises on her and decided she needed a new path in life. The noble agreed and Selena, who was 12 at the time, was now a permanent part of the crew slowly rising to the ranks and fighting with the rest of them became a fine Swashbuckler pirate with dreams of someday being a Pirate captain. So now at age 19, she wants to go on adventures, make friends, find treasures, and more. She comes to Waterdeep in search of a new adventure, treasure, and new companions to go on the ultimate adventure. She is known to some as "Lady Pirate" but everyone else calls her Selena, or the Silver Pirate, or Lady Pirate as you will always see her wearing a silver pirate jacket with jewels embroidered on it.

Going to get my character submitted today. Excited to play my first ever pathfinder game. ^_^

Submitted Selena Silver to the game so hopefully I did it right. Swashbuckler sounds awesome though.
