Once you start exploring underground, I strongly recommend that you map the dungeon. You will get far more out of Stonehell if you properly understand its layout, and you’ll only achieve that by mapping.

As further incentives, I will award XP for mapping on a per-room basis and I’ll allow you to move through already mapped areas of the dungeon more quickly, thereby reducing the number of possible instances of wandering monsters.

I’ll leave it up to you as to how you organise yourselves to map - whether it’s using old-school graph paper or some sort of online/collaborative tool.

This is a great video on old-school mapping. No need to watch all of it, unless you’re particularly interested in the software (Miro) that this particular group uses, but the first fifteen minutes is a great overview of how player mapping can enhance an old-school game.

Use this thread for discussing and sharing your maps.

Yeah old school dungeons basically REQUIRE mapping, I remember them being densely packed room to room affairs.

Mapping is part of the fun!

Do you want us to tell you which character(s) have the maps(s)?

That's an interesting idea, that the PCs would also be making a map. I always thought that the maps were more for the players than something that exists in the game world: a way of helping to envision what the characters are experiencing, memorizing the relationships of rooms, remembering how many steps have been taken, hearing how sound echoes, feeling the walls, etc.

If the PCs are making the map, then it's obviously going to be a character that has map-drawing materials. Do any of our PCs have parchment, candles, ink, quills, and a penknife?

It's up to the group, but I tend to view old-school mapping as a player skill/exercise, rather than a character one. So my default position is not to be too fussy about exactly which character is mapping and whether they have the necessary equipment. Nor whether it's the character with the maps that has just been incinerated by the dragon, thereby losing all their hard work.

However, if there's a preference in the group for a hardcore "PCs-do-the-mapping" approach, we can do it that way. Just let me know.

I also like the idea that we players do the mapping, because if one character was doing it, it might lead to only one player doing the map...and I think it would be fun if more than one of us worked on the map and then occasionally (once a month?) post what our maps look like.

We can laugh at how different they are!

But that's kind of a meta-game entertainment. If people want to experience the old-school feel of assigned roles and have one player be a dedicated mapper, I'm happy to do it.

I could also try my hand at it. I've got some drawing and mapping software that could do with some use XD

The reason I asked was in the old days the mapping player’s character was assumed to carry the map. If that character was disintegrated or dissolved by a gelatinous cube, then so was the map. Which made it difficult for the party to find their way out of the dungeon. I’d prefer everyone mapping though. That’s part of the fun 😁

Here's the maps I have so far. I will update the thread as we explore more and the map(s) gets updated.

Excellent, thank you! Your northern and eastern corridors are each one square too long, but I'll try to be clearer in my descriptions by making a distinction between a "straight section" of corridor, and a "corner section" where there is a change of direction.

Maps are spot on - good work.

Your mapping is a blessing spaceseeker19. So good! Looking at it I can fully understand the situation. Just have to remember to jump back and look for it. I'm not so go at just reading what is written.

You're just missing the other door in the dining room, in the westernmost section of the southern wall.

Burbage says:
As Swan leads The Hellions across the cave towards its southerly and westerly exits, you are able to get a better view of the northern exit and where it leads. A short 10’ tunnel opens out into a second cave. Pressed against the wall of that cave, near the entrance is a group of seven kobolds. They are all doing their best to remain unseen, without much success. Each is carrying a bucket. Beyond the kobolds, further into the northerly cave, your lantern light also picks out the fluttering outlines of (normal-sized) bats.
Are they pressed against the eastern wall or the western one? I'm assuming from your description that cave opens out in one direction or the other...

They're pressed against the eastern wall, albeit in a rather disorganised huddle. From what you can see, the cave to the north opens out in both directions (east and west), but you can't gauge the extent from your current position.

Ah, so they're in the tunnel that connects the caves. I misunderstood. Thank you!

The passage leading west from the Natural Cavern is 10' longer than currently shown on the map.

Your hexagonal chamber is a bit too tall. The diagonals start from the same level as the east and west passages, and each diagonal goes 10' laterally and 10' vertically. So you should end up with a chamber that is 30' in the north-south direction (yours is currently 40').
