Several decades long past, a colony of deep gnomes were bustling around being generally awesome in their Underdark habitat. Big dark critters generally left them alone, because, let's face it, deep gnomes are kinda hard core about beating things in the face that are trying to hurt them, and so this colony lived in blissful solitude. During the lumifungi festival, just after the lumi princess was crowned, the screaming began. Hundreds escaped (roughly 1/20 of the population), but none that lived actually saw what fell upon them. They settled right near the surface, in a discarded dwarven town. The few groups of young and dumb gnomes that have tried to go back since have not returned.

And then Sijib was born. His parents, being like all parents, thought he hung the freakn moon. So they actually changed his sire name to Shadowmender in an attempt to strong arm his destiny into bringing his gnomish kingdom back into their home by dispelling whatever foul entity guards it. In the mean time, Sijib apprenticed with a cartographer and spent many long hours guiding gnome merchants to different surface settlements and other merchants back to Lament (the new gnome colony). It did not take the young gnome very long to see the oppression surface races were under from the dragons. He did not know what the status of other underdark races was. He began talking to his merchant friends about wanting to help....to do SOMETHING. Most scoffed and chalked these rants up to him being young and full of ideals (albeit dangerous ideals), but one (and it only takes one) put dropped his name to a lady as a potential asset.
OOC:
He's a dark gnome....so darkish skin. Hair and beard meticulously trimmed. Although travel leathers are his standard, they are well oiled and cared for. Any holes meticulously sewn and mended. He's quiet. Nervous around lots of folks, but forcefully stands for what he believes. Oh yeah, and he's been raised since birth to hate whatever ran his people from the underdark and to believe that it will be his hand (or arrow) that slays whatever it is.

You hear a lot of tales of life on the open sea. Many of them are fancy yarns of bravery and adventure that are shared next to a cozy hearth by some landsman to entertain wide eyed brats. Most folk have never dared to do more than wet their toes at low tide, let alone leave the sight of their precious shores on the wide open waves. The truth is, life on a deck is hard, dirty, and miserable. But 'tis free. At least it was until the Orm-spawned lizards came.

I've never been the best sailor, but I can haul a line and keep my back to the work until the watch is done. I also know how to keep my head down and not give cause for the skipper to tan my hide at the mizzen. A man that knows this can often catch things the rest of his mates miss. When I was first approached for information from a Pale snoop, I gave without qualm. Anything that loosened the scaly grip about our necks would serve all of us. Soon I had my own contact to receive the details of manifests and Caer Tan fleet movements.

Now, Carista, she was a mariner of note! Most agreed that she was the finest first mate between the Shadows and the Steel. She must have been born on the waves and swaddled in canvas. Her eyes rivaled the emerald deep itself. We weren't able to share enough shore leave together, but the time we had was enough to make me wonder if a salt could leave the realm of Umberlee's song.

I should have known something was afoul about the tip from that junker out of Gynli. No right-minded captain would risk those shoals during the Swells. Carista's skipper was a full Deva officer and ordered their caravel to scout for an easy score against the empire. All hands were reported lost during the ambush. By the time a few mates and I were able to get a skiff to the site, nothing was left but ruined hull and rigging.

I have now devoted my life and blades to bringing down the dark souls that are crushing us all. I sail where the Pale Deva orders and on those they place the black mark I give my steel. This cause is all that is left to me and the free peoples of Valladhel.
OOC:
Rhodrick is a human fighter that relies on his agility and twin rapiers to bring down his foes. His leathers and gear are salt stained but kept in good order. At times he is distant with his crewmates but always has an ear open for scuttlebutt and a keen eye on his surroundings. Sometimes he can be heard softly whistling a sad old shanty.

13 years ago in the city of Hrawold there existed the family of Rowen. The family was seen as loyal subjects of the empire. They would always go the extra mile to remain in the good graces of the leaders of the city, yet to the family of Rowen this "good grace" was a means to an end of their own design. Though on the outside they were seen as loyal, their true intent was to help those who were trying to splinter the hardened grip of the empire.

13 long years ago... Yet to Haesh Rowen his vivid memory only made it seem like yesterday... On that frightful night, Haesh was awoken by the tolling of the bells of execution. His servant rushed Haesh out of his home explaining that he must flee the city by boat or be killed with the rest of his family. He was then put into a cargo box and put on a boat headed for the Noble City of Brewold. There he entered the city on his own with only 20 pieces of silver, the keys from his house, and his night clothes...

The streets became his new way of life. Everyday seemed to revolve around gang life, stealing, and avoiding the law keepers. Sometimes he found himself on the wrong side of gang life, but he always tried to look out for those who could not help themselves. Haesh tried to keep his family's ideals that had been instilled in him for so long, but when you are hungry and cold you will do anything.

Survival brings out the worst in us all.

Throughout the years his memories of his old life seemed to have become warped and deteriorated. Outside of fleeing the castle, he still has dreams of something he does not understand... The dream always starts the same... The white fire continually burning... Him thrusting his hands in the flame without knowing why... The flame did not burn, but wrapped around his fingers and then disappeared. As he pulled his hands back the skin on his fingers between his knuckles glowed with a pale white color. Then the dream ends... Every time he awoke from this dream his hands always itched... Whether this was something from his past or something new, Haesh was not sure, but his hope is that one day he can solve this mystery.

In all this time, Haesh always kept an eye out for how he could sabotage any aspirations of the empire. There have been many rumors regarding resistance, and Haesh has finally gotten the right contacts... Now for the next goal... The Island of Eglar...
OOC:
Haesh Rowen is a human fight with the urchin background... All of his gear is rusted and comes from gang wars and looting. He has a strong hatred for the empire and its supporters. He tends to be paranoid about security, especially regarding his belongings.

Lyss'amir, minstrel of shadows

The story begins with a woman. She was knowledgeable of medicinal herbs and how to use them to cure illments, so people respected her. Rina was her name. She lived in a small house on the edge of the forest, which provided her with bulk of medicinal herbs. So, naturally, Rina spent quite some time traveling the woods. One time she found wounded elven man, bleeding out on the ground. Rina was compassionate woman, so she took him in and nursed back to health. It took some time as wounds were serious and during that time that elven man became something more than a patient.

Nine months later a baby was born. He was named Lyss'amir. The family was happy and that continued for almost five years. Until a messenger arrived. An elf. And the father had to return to his kind. He promised that it will not take long, but ten years passed without a single message from him.

One day, when Lyss'amir was on errand from his mother, some nobles stopped by Rina's house as one of them got sick during the journey. It wasn't uncommon, as she was quite famous around this area. But when Lyss returned from his errand - the house was ransacked and Rina's bloodied body lying on the floor. Thankfully she wasn't dead, but the nobles took the memento from Lyss's father with them. Apparently one of them decided that he liked it and when Rina tried to stop them - things got violent.

After this Rina wasn't the same. And Lyss'amir vowed to find those nobles and make them pay. Not to mention - to get the memento back.
Gathering all the information about those nobles in the area, he set out on the road. His journey was long and quite dangerous, but Lyss was determined and not afraid to step into the shadows. He trained himself in the ways of the spy. Got caught several times, but managed to get out. One time he had to frame an innocent person for his crime. Lyss was watching from the crowd as that person was escorted by the guard and his heart was calm. He had a long road ahead of him and this journey couldn't be stopped there.

So Lyss continued on his trail for those nobles and their trail led him to this island...
OOC:
Lyss is a tall half-elf man with dark-blueish hair (that's how his elven genes decided to show up). Ears almost human, just a little pointy on top. He's handsome, but doesn't like to stand out, so he prefers to do things quietly and stealthy.

Parallel hails from a halfling village in the Nymph Woods but he can't go back there for "certain reasons". He had been hanging out in Olinyand, trying to make it on his own. By keeping his ear to the ground and soaking up salacious gossip, he discovered that he had a certain knack for putting the squeeze on anyone in power with a guilty secret to hide (but not anyone too powerful, obviously). He had a certain amount of success gaining social influence, power, and wealth by successfully (and secretly of course) utilizing blackmail and forgery to influence people and events. His shame was that he was considered the black sheep of the family for his chosen avocation, using his energies for illegal purposes and personal gain.

As he learned more about those in power, he discovered a secret held by some that he just didn't know what to do with it. Blackmailing someone who had a dark secret was one thing, but a secret that revealed a person as subversive to the dragon power was something he was reluctant to use for gain. The more he thought about what these people were doing and compared it to his relatively empty life, he found his higher purpose -- what if he used skills to help the common folk and make a better life for all of his people in the Nymph Woods?

He did all he could to be noticed by what he learned was called the Pale Diva -- while walking the treacherous tight rope of not being noticed by the authorities -- so that he could offer his services in the resistance movement.

On a personal note, he has now risen to something of a secret legend in his family. While they outwardly refuse to speak of him because of the "shame" he has brought on their family (as they've always done), this is now only to support his cover. They now, privately, think of Parallel as a real anti-hero, and he takes immense pride in this fact. Making his grandmother and mother proud is the driving force in his life. He worshops the ground they walk on, and holds all of the women of his family, including aunts, cousins, sisters, and nieces, in very high esteem. It never occurred to him to keep his activities secret from them -- they just had to know he was a good guy now. Certainly they can be trusted...

In fact, this is the source of his one great flaw -- he tends to believe anything any female says to him (disadvantage on insight).

After finally making contact with the Pale Deva, he'd performed a few tasks around the region that had really impressed -- helping to divert resources along roads more easily highjacked, influencing the rise of several double agents in the ranks of government -- so much so that he was finally called up to the big time. He boarded a river barge down the Cardy River to the Sea of Stars, then booked passage to Elgar for this meet up.

He sees himself as freedom fighter in his own special, if slightly immoral, idom -- after all, he only takes money from the guilty, and they deserve to pay, don't they?

Religion: Parallel formerly worshipped at the temple of Lenocorácilla, the neutral goddess of trade, in the Nymph Woods. Followers there were required to pray to the south at 6 o'clock every morning, and he still keeps up the habit.

Naozar Casma a.k.a "Jandral"

The proud Casma family has always enjoyed favor in the empire owing to their draconic ancestry and fervent loyalty. But in the person of Naozar, the youngest son of the current head of the family, Lord Tanlius Casmar, the apple has fallen far from he tree indeed. Naozar is Lord Tanlius' bastard, the product of an ill-advised dalliance with an elven woman. His illegitimate status, his diluted blood, and his lackadaisical, sometimes rebellious bent have all contributed to his being regarded as quite the embarrassment. Still, the youngest Lord of Casmar enjoyed all the privileges of rank his family name afforded as long as he stayed out of trouble.

Naozar's rebellion goes far deeper than anyone could ever have imagined. Not sharing his family's fierce allegiance to the empire, he joined the resistance in secret. He's very good at disguising himself, and when he's on-mission for the Pale Deva he is always incognito. An ornate mask covers his face (and the mask's appearance changes often). In addition, Naozar uses both mundane and magical means to disguise his face should he ever need to shed the mask. For this mission he has chosen to introduce himself as "Jandral".

Trait: No one could doubt by looking at my regal bearing that I am a cut above the unwashed masses.
Trait: If you do me an injury, I will crush you, ruin your name, and salt your fields.
Bond: I am in love with the heir of a family that my family despises.
Ideal: Respect is due to me because of my position, but all people regardless of station deserve to be treated with dignity. (Good)
Flaw: I hide a truly scandalous secret that could ruin my family forever.
