Scene 1 - And the gunslingers followed...

Mattie heads down the gentle slope towards the farmstead, while Bertie walks with her - sometimes rushing ahead, sometimes racing back, looking around at them all, but especially at Oscar.

Henry follows them, his beast of a weapon glinting in the sun behind her, with Rose and Oscar pulling up the rear.

The rude farmstead is maybe half a mile away from them.

Once they've closed about half that distance, they can all spot the moment when the two figures spot them. The figures stop to stare up at them - one shorter, stouter, wearing a shall over their head, the other taller, thinner, and with a head or face that seems strangely indistinct.

After a moment's consideration, both figures move swiftly into one of the buildings and emerge a minute later carrying shapes which look like they could be weapons. They are also joined by an animal - four legs, low to the ground, fairly small, but with somehow, hm, waving extensions moving above its back?

If they were weapons they brought out, they haven't raised them to point at the ka-tet - however they are standing still, the two human figures and the dog, watching up at you.

"Keep that scattergun handy...." Hendry says to Rose in a low tone and then turns to the strangers. He raises his arm in a gesture of greeting, empty palm open in the manner of old New Canaan.

'We are pilgrims, on this road. Will you offer us salt and bread?' Henry asks formally. 'And we will sit palaver with you, telling you news of the outside world- its triumphs and its sorrows.' the young man says loudly- calling out to the individuals ahead.

'Manners is important.' Hendry chuckles. He missed the predictability of ceremonial politeness that the Suzerainty provided. 'Phillistines, the lot o'ye.' He smiles.

Seeing Henry's gestures, hearing Henry's words, the human figures and the small animal visibly relax their postures. You can all see this, despite being still 200 yards or so distant from them.

The figure with the shawl-covered head raises their hand in a mirrored greeting and calls out, in a gruff weathered - yet loud and penetrating - voice.

"Prithee, pilgrims, you are welcome here with us. We will sit in palaver, share our table together, and hear your news of the outside world. We expect, in these rotten days, to hear more sorrows than triumphs"

As you come closer you realise that the second figure isn't wearing a hat, or obscuring it's face. Rather, the figure has the head of fennec - broad high pointed desert ears dynamic, twitching.

And the low animal. It's a dog. You can even recognise it to be a corgi. Although that'd be a corgi with a set of four octopus-like tentacles waving out of its back. The corgi is sitting looking at you, tongue lolling.

I use red text in my posts to be able to see more clearly spoken words. I find bolding the text doesn't make it different enough from the other text for me to be able to easily distinguish it. Happy for you to keep bolding yours.

"Right." Rose nods, shifting the shotgun against her back. She actually picks up a swagger behind Henry, feeling untouchable with two feet of gunmetal behind her. When the farmers are revealed in all their uncanny nature, Rose's attitude all but evaporates. Her throat audibly clicks, and her gun might as well be an ice-cold twig. She's seen some strange things in the past year, sure, but this is a new weird.

She looks to Henry, as much to gauge the strangeness by his reaction as to confirm the fox's invitation. "That's great, right? We go down, kick back, make ourselves at home . . . right?"

"Alright if I give your dog a treat, Sai?", Oscar says. The once foreign word flows easily from his lips. He pockets his taser in the hidden pocket of his tattered jacket and brings out a bit of dried meat from the dinner before. He holds it up, takes a bite, then tosses it to the farmers' dog.
Dec 16, 2023 1:36 pm
At Oscar's words, the figure in the head-shrouded shawl nods at him.

"Thankee-Sai. Ol' Podge here don't get himself too many treats these days, I'm'a sure he'll take what you got there for him."

And with that, the tentacled corgi - apparently "Podge" - makes his way out towards the treat thrown by Oscar, reaches out with one of his tentacles, delicately picks up the treat, and passes it to his mouth. Couple of chews, a swallow, and down it goes. Podge looks hopefully up at Oscar, his tail wagging fairly vigorously.

Now Oscar is closer, he sees that the dog holds two wicked-looking knives, one each in a tentacle. Podge isn't menacing them at the ka-tet, or pointing them in their direction. It's just, you know, he happens to be carrying a couple of knives with him. Just in case.

Oscar also sees now, more closely, the weapon-looking object being held by the shawled figure - it's weapon-looking because it's an AR-15. And the fox-headed figure next to them is holding a hefty revolver in one hand. Again, as for Podge, their weapons aren't raised - and you get a sense that both figures are relaxed now about the party moving towards them. But they haven't put their weapons down on the ground because, well, you don't want them getting dirty, do you?

Henry puts fist to forehead in a gesture of respect, foregoing the more formal bow with bent knee. 'You honor us with your hospitality. Shall we sit here, and take in the days warmth?' Henry asks. He maintains eye contact with the shawled figure. 'I am Henry Spatchcock or Pennilton...' Henry introduces all of his comrades, including Bertie. He tries to maintain a cordial yet cautious demeanor.
Dec 16, 2023 7:11 pm
The shawled figure, the fennec-headed figure, and the corgi Podge pay close attention to Henry as he introduces the ka-tet. Once he's finished, all three respond in kind, putting a fist to their forehead (Podge bunches up the end of one of his tentacles and taps it between his eyes).

"May we be well-met, you guests and travellers." intones the figure in the shawl.

"I am Beretta, mistress of this here humble farmstead."

"And I am Spline, master of what little we have here to call our own." says the fennec-headed figure. His voice is high-pitched, almost like he is barking - but his words remain clear.

Podge looks between the members of the ka-tet. Then lets out a couple of yips. And indulges in some vigorous tail-wagging.

"The world moved on a good while ago, but it seems to be moving even further on, even faster, than it used to. And that even-faster-moving-on world, that seems to be bringing even fewer vistors to our simple home than the few there once were."

Beretta looks awkwardly up at Spline and makes eye contact with him. He acknowledges this, and nods.

"Ah, yes, you be right there, Beretta - having said that, it's not so long ago, now I think of it, that we did have a guest here, someone to break bread and more with."

Beretta speaks up and says

"If I may ask... Seeing by your company, by the colour and presentation of your iron, by that force of will I seem to sense just a'radiating off of y'all... Could it be that you are true Oathtakers? Gunslingers? Followers of the Way of the Gun?"

"Mayhap we are, mayhap we ain't." Mattie looks at the woman seizing up their group. "Be that as it may, all things serve the beam. Right?" The woman, hat shading her eyes, looks at the farmer's reactions.

Mattie never even touched her shotgun. She has come down the hill and straight at them.
"Might be time to put away them guns and actually be as hospitable as you want us to think you are, no?"

"You want some chitchat? How 'bout you show us a lil somethin' first? Some hooch, maybe? Some stories of interesting strangers ... may-be?" She takes a step towards them, unfolds her arms and stretches them to either side, showing that despite her harsh sounding words, she hasn't approached with bad intentions. "I, for one, could do with some breakfast. Shall we share? What is it you farm here, anyways?" Mattie looks around to see if there are any suspicous structures, entrances to demon-infested cellars, maybe ... a barn from which to lead an ambush?

The lesson Mattie has learnt, has been a bitter one. She is not so eager to trust strangers in the desert anymore.

Henry laughs a bit inwardly, hearing Mattie take charge of the situation. While he considered himself a diplomat, he appreciates the Wastelander's direct approach.
And like any good soldier he sees the value of falling in line with directions.

'All of our company' Henry spreads his arms out to include everyone he travels with. 'are kin by our shared goals... " Henry covers his firearm with his red shawl and opens his arms. "I am a servant of Arthur Eld- as my kith and kin has been for generations.' Henry frowns, studying the matron of the town. Is this a Taheen? He'd heard about them, but never seen one- and from what he understood they were all servants of the Crimson king.

Henry throws a subtle, cautionary sign to his group regarding the fennec headed man. ‘To call ourselves one of their rank? I hope one day to be worthy…’

As the conversation flows into friendlier tones, Rose begins to see the Spline the fox-man as nothing more than a friendly figure with one unique family pet. Maybe it's the welcoming way he speaks, or how he obviously cares for his little dog and farm. It's amazing how little it takes for people to recognize their fellow people as long as a little touch of personality is present. Of course, the glinting semi-auto is still an alarm buzzing in the back of her skull, but she's a long way closer to seeing this situation as normal.

At Spline's mention of another guest, Rose naturally imagines the only person they've seen in the desert for months. A cold finger of ice slips down her spine as she remembers the faces in Pittston. She wonders if Mattie is right to be suspicious. That doesn't mean you have to ruin such a pleasant meeting, Rose thinks, but that's not entirely fair. Not after Pittston.

Rose edges into the conversation after Henry: "With that, why don't we continue this conversation inside? 'Sit in palaver,' like you guys said. Maybe you can tell us more about the man you met earlier." She can't remember whether or not one of them mentioned the gender of the guest. Too late now.
Dec 17, 2023 1:39 pm
Oscar hangs back an observes the conversation. He notices the look pass between the man and the woman.

"Are they like me?", he thinks.

It wouldn't be put of the ordinary. Low-level psychic power, the shimmer his companion's call it, is as common as weeds in this world. Still, there aren't that many weeds in the desert.

"We could eat if you would join us.", Oscar chimes in.

Henry remains quiet but respectful- waiting to hear how the residents respond to the situation.

Beretta looks over at Mattie, and narrows her eyes.

"Well, young lady, yes, all things do serve the Spoke, if that's what you be a'meaning. It ain't for nothing that this here farmstead came with the name 'Armadillos Rest'"

"As for putting away our guns - well, I ain't dropping this here sweetheart down into the dirt for no body. This damned desert dust gets all over everywhere, if you know what I mean. And by the look of your there clothing, I think you do know what I mean. Been out in plenty of that dust yourselves."

"I don't say I like all your manners - standing there in front of me, trying to threaten me with your outstretched arms, as you walk here towards MY home..."

"But Podge, and I, and Spline here - despite this young lady's, I think the name was Mattie? - rough manners, we get a good feeling about y'all - and are happy to offer what meagre hospitality we have. Mayhap it's enough 'hospitality' for you if we just all turn around now and head in for a sit-down, a meal, a chit-chat together inside out of the sun. I trust you enough not to shoot us in the back."

With that Beretta beckons you towards the largest of the buildings on the farmstead - a wooden-planked structure, with a corrugated metal roof. A simple door with a fly screen faces towards you, and on the left side of the building a set of concrete steps descend, presumably towards a cellar.

She, Spline, and Podge then ostentatiously turn their backs to you and walk towards the building, a low throaty chuckle and a shake of the head coming from Beretta. You have a feeling that she's seen a lot in her time, and ain't gonna be put out by a couple of rough-mannered guests.
OOC:
The Black Tower Hack lore uses "spokes" rather than "beams" - keeping the world a bit more differentiated from the one written by King.

OOC:
I'm curious- can my character tell who she thinks was rude? lol- i missed that.
Dec 17, 2023 10:20 pm
OOC:
Sure :) Beretta is referring to Mattie - with her "Might be time to put away them guns and actually be as hospitable as you want us to think you are, no?" and so on - and this is clear to all the ka-tet

I've edited to the post to make this clear.

lol- that’s some sass!
Henry shrugs, following the trio- and shoots a side eye at Mattie and grins like a mischievous schoolboy. ’Ms. Adler was raised in a barn, y’all.’

Oscar cracks a smile at Henry's joke and follows along, keeping behind the rest of the group. As he does, he observes the dust covered buildings looking for signs of the Armidillo or the bloody mark of the king.

Why do they think she wants them to put down their guns on the ground? Are they not quite right?
Playing coy, then calling her people dusty - they should be glad Mattie isn't offended easily.

She tips her hat anyway and follows the strange fellows towards their ... house?
While approaching she looks for windows and other possible exit routes.
Mattie also tries to seize up the other buildings. What might their purpose be? Could someone hide there?
"We've come quite a way without seein a soul. Must be awfully quiet around here..."

When they get close to the cellar, Mattie tries to see whether there is a lock on the outside.
OOC:
how many buildings are there? are any of them big or look like more people might live there? what is the layout of the big house - at least from what we can see at the moment? thx

Rose laughs with the others, making a show of losing her nerves, but privately she has already started to imagine what the Dark Man's palaver with Beretta and Spline was like. Did he have a treat for little Podge on his way in? Did he give these humble farmers the pieces that now flashed in their hands? Did he mention that a few gunslingers would be stopping by any day now, so get ready for a storm a-brewin'? Dancing Jack or not, Rose plans to get as much information on the mystery guest as she can from this palaver.
