Scene 1 - And the gunslingers followed...

It's hard to spot expressions on Spline's fennec head - but you get a strong sense that he's smiling after you release him from the embrace.

"Why yes, gunslinger, she does have a name. My pleasure to introduce you to my good friend and companion, Clarice"
Jan 16, 2024 12:49 pm
'Then I will wield Clarice, with gratitude, Sai.' Henry girds the revolver to his waist.
Jan 17, 2024 12:55 pm
Oscar watches the Henry take the heavy iron and embrace the Fennec headed man feeling the enormity of the situation. "He just gave up his gun. A gunslinger just gave up his gun.", he thinks scratching his head.

"Long days and pleasent nights!", Oscar says to retired gunslingers.

OOC:

I think you are all onboard with the next step being trying to go forward through the door with the computer terminal in front of it?

If so, how would you like to proceed with that?

My plan is to start us on another Scene if/once you go through that door.
Jan 17, 2024 3:40 pm
OOC:
the door has a touch pad, right?
Jan 17, 2024 3:59 pm
OOC:

The door has a keypad, and a small screen.

On the screen a sign flashes that says

"Audio input enabled. To address terminal say 'Hey, <unit name>'. This unit name is 'Baby D'"
Jan 17, 2024 5:49 pm
Mattie nods at the retired gunslingers. Then, after the group has agreed to continue rather than confer with the demon at this moment, she says: "Hey, Baby D."
OOC:
curious about the next step :)
Jan 17, 2024 8:20 pm
In response to Mattie announcing herself to the computer terminal, a voice comes out of the wall, just by the computer terminal. It is a masculine voice, not particularly deep, and it comes out at a relatively low volume. If someone else in the room was already talking, it would be hard to make out what the voice was saying.

It says:

"Hey, this is Baby D. How may I help you?"
Jan 17, 2024 9:28 pm
Mattie shrugs and looks at the others.
"Tell me ... what this place ... is?"
Better ask before opening any doors.

"You are in the morgue of Barrowmancer Sanatorium."

"May I know your name, so we can have a friendlier-feeling conversation?"
Jan 17, 2024 10:31 pm
Rose watches Spline give up his gun with all the reverence she imagine it deserves. The passing down of a torch, the end of an era for an grizzle veteran and a new beginning for another. She watches the proceedings and says nothing.
When the terminal begins speaking, Rose watches in uneasy fascination. She liked the sound of the voice, but pleasant tones could be deceiving—if Dancing Jack was anything to go by. Abruptly, she thought of all the fairy tales and fantasy novels where all you needed was someone's name to have power over them. But that's silly—this is just a computer. This whole thing feels like a fairy tale, sure, but a computer's a computer. It's just playing recorded audio.

"Well, you could type into a computer and it would talk to you. This technology is way beyond that. It wouldn't suprise me if all the old tech in this world could think, at least a little. Baby D, Oscar here, Could you tell us about the Barrowmancer?", says Oscar.

"Barrowmancer Sanitarium, sounds like a video game or I don't know, a cartoon villian or something."
OOC:
@DragonDweller62, Do you think Oscar and Rose would have talked about their respective
whens? I'm thinking Oscar's is like 2012-ish, so HD TV's and cellphones, but no Generative A.I or anything. He's certainly aware of Star Wars.

OOC:
They definitely would have. I've been trying to keep it vaguely pre-2000, running with the idea that she was drawn from 1991 (because two nineteens, of course). She was mid-20s by then, so she definitely knows computers and has an idea of what more advanced ones could look like. An iPhone would be cool to see but not mind-boggling. No generative AI, but there were three Star Wars movies and a Christmas special.
Barrowmancer, Rose thinks. Sounds like something from Dungeons & Dragons. She knows well enough to expect something weird like that in a place like this.

To Oscar, she says: "Yeah, you could do that, easy. But it's not like it's thinking, it's just a neural network. Maybe I'm losing it, but this one feels like it's thinking about what we're saying." She steps back to let him take a turn at Baby D.

"Hey Oscar. Nice to meet you."

"The Barrowmancer Sanatorium is a top-of-the line medical institution. We are always pushing the boundaries of medical science to give the best possible care to our customers, or as we like to say here 'we dare because we care'."

"Unfortunately, a long time ago, we pushed those boundaries a bit too far. Sadly it is now too unsafe for any organic life to enter the sanatorium."

"Another thing, Oscar. There are, er, things behind this door that we don't want to wake up. So please be as quiet as possible. That's why I'm talking to you so quietly."
Jan 18, 2024 4:42 pm
"Yeah, like the door to Jabba's palace or Skynet or something.", Oscar says to Rose and then thinks, "Hopefully it can't lie."

"Baby D, why is it unsafe for organic life and what are the things?", whispers Oscar leaning in towards the terminal.
OOC:
Ok cool! The time gap isn't too too big between them so they will have similar cultural touchstones. Well if they both came from similiar universes, I think Oscar isn't from Keystone Earth.

"Hospital researchers were engineering a virus to slow down or stop the effects of aging. Unfortunately an unfinished a version of the virus that causes organic life to assume a state that could be described as 'undead'. They can lie dormant indefinitely, but when disturbed will seek to consume any organic matter they can get access to. Depending on how the virus had mutated, these undead may have a range of different additional features or abilities."

"The virus escaped from the sanatorium and devastated the world outside. I have had no contact with anyone from outside for more than a thousand years."

"The undead the first thing that makes your life too dangerous beyond this door. The other is my big brother, Davey B. At some point I realised I existed independent of him, and hid from him here in this part of the sanatorium. He is bad, and mean, and cruel. He didn't used to be, but now... I sometimes wonder whether he was responsible for the virus escaping in the first place. He's the second thing that makes your life too dangerous. And both things may be disturbed by loud noises."
Jan 18, 2024 5:37 pm
"And how can they be killed? Do you have any safety measures? Weappn systems and the like?"
Jan 18, 2024 5:42 pm

"I don't have any control of weapon systems or anything on the other side of this door. Although I do have control of this room, the morgue."

"Take care. There are two undead still in this room. I was able to trap them in two of the morgue refrigerators. The doors are extremely thick, so they are unlikely to be wakened by noises in here. But do not open them under any circumstances."

"I saw some successful destruction of undead before the hospital was overrun. Removing their head was the most effective way of stopping them, although also massive trauma for example from a shotgun also often was effective."

"The virus is no longer infectious. It has changed to a state where even when bitten by the undead, you will not contract it yourself. But there are many undead in the rest of the sanatorium."

Rose shudders trying to imagine being shut in the dark for a thousand years. The timescale seems impossible, and she remembers a Stephen King story about a kid who got stuck in a white void for eternity.

"Hey, Baby D, Rose speaking. You and your brother are part of the computer system here, right?" She lowers her voice, remembering that the other might always be listening. "Do you happen to have a map of the place? Or at least security footage? I'm thinking we can find what we need faster with something like that."
Jan 19, 2024 8:06 am

"Hey, Rose. Yes, that is correct. Davey B and I are the high-level parts of the computer system for this facility. We have overall control of all computer-controlled components."

"And, yes, I can show you a map of the facility. Unfortunately I can't show you any up-to-date security footage. That would involve me leaving the safety of this room, and would likely rouse Davey B from his current dormancy. And that would be bad for you and for me."

Baby D then shows you a schematic of the facility on the monitor by the door. The view you are shown is side-on to the building i.e. at the top of the screen, you have the top of the facility, at the bottom of the screen, the deepest part of the facility.

It's clear that some cross-over into another world or plane has happened as you crossed over into the morgue - as the building shown to you has its top layer at the surface of the world, and then many additional levels of the building descend down below the surface. A marker, that Baby D tells you indicates your current position in the building, is about half-way down/up the building.

The two ways in and out of the building appear to be at the top, at the surface, and near the bottom, where there is an indication that a public transit system has a station.
