Rolls

Hural Osaf: DUTY (7) COMMUNICATE(5) - (2d20)

(812) = 20

Jan 22, 2024 8:25 pm
Hural determines the exact amount that will leave Ordway satisfied but not ecstatic. After a moment, he tosses a smaller bag of solaris to one of the Rats who disappear into the tunnels.

"I'll do you one better," he says once his bodyguards are gone. "I'll fly you there myself. It's on Sihaya Ridge, but it's devilish hard to find if you don't know exactly where to look."
Jan 22, 2024 10:56 pm
"I'm glad we could come to an agreement. If we work out a return trip, we could pay for that as well."

Hural looks to the others, "Are you ready to travel?"
Jan 23, 2024 1:06 am
Marcus gives a curt nod and answers, "Yes."
Jan 23, 2024 3:12 am
"I am, of course." Rook is pleased with the outcome of the meeting. Being taken directly to the location was a welcome surprise.
Jan 23, 2024 6:49 am
Marya watches and listens carefully to Ordway. She wants to assess whether or not Ordway was prepared for, expecting, that their job would be linked to the smugglers. And whether he seems to have any intentions - potentially harmful towards Marya and the others here from House Helsin - in addition to just ferrying them out to the smugglers lair.
OOC:
Will roll Power 8 ("Understanding others is the path to true power") Understand 6 (Body Language focus) with Trait Empath for this

EDIT: I read that as one success, with difficulty reduced by 1 due to use of the Trait?

Rolls

Understand - Power - Body Language Skill Test - (2d20)

(169) = 25

Jan 23, 2024 3:13 pm
Marya picks up that Ordway expected rich merchants and was prepared to defend himself if you attempted to snatch him. That is, he expected to be snatched and was surprised at the seemingly honest and fair offer.

The Rats on the other hand were more than prepared to jump you, steal your valuables, and hold you for ransom. In fact, given their looks when they left, that option might still be on the table.
Jan 23, 2024 4:01 pm
Marya makes eye contact with the other associates of House Helsin and gives them each a small discrete nod, followed by discrete positioning of her body poised for action and combat, and looks around at their surroundings.

"Yes, let's head out." says Marya.

"And let's also keep our eyes open for any recalcitrant Rats. They might yet decide to take this encounter to a more, let's say, vigorous conclusion.".

As they follow Ordway, Marya keeps a careful look-out for any ambushes or aggressive moves against them.
OOC:
I think this is Marya using Understand (Danger Sense), and that it probably best relates to either the Truth drive (trying to uncover possible hidden dangers?) or Duty (keeping her and her house associates safe from danger?). If Duty is better, then is this a case where the drive opposes the action? Or one where none of the drive statements suit the action? (p147 of the core rules)?
Jan 23, 2024 6:56 pm
Rook, no stranger to the ways of the underworld and their often treacherous dealings, lets his senses hover over the surroundings as the group makes their way along the narrow passages.

"I'd be happy to lead if all agree?"

Rolls

Faith 7, Understand 4 - Danger Sense Focus - (2d20)

(202) = 22

Jan 23, 2024 9:05 pm
"Be my guest," Marcus bows his head and gestures with an outstretched hand. "I'll take the rearguard."
OOC:
I don't know if it's required, but maybe a Duty Understand roll to make sure no one creeps up from behind them. Please ignore if it's unnecessary or I've erred.

Rolls

Marcus Syn: DUTY (6) UNDERSTAND (5) - (2d20)

(419) = 23

Jan 24, 2024 4:39 am
Hural follows behind Rook. Trusting the man to know the way back, Hural instead pays close attention for anything upon their path that seems to differ from their approach - any signs of activity or subterfuge.

Collectively, you understand that you've wandered into unsafe territory, and further that the so called Rats are up to no good.

You gather yourselves and Sally forth. When they ambush you, you are ready.

Marya and Rook both sense the imminent attack. Hural notes that one of the stone walls you passed on the way in had moved just a fraction, as if it is a door unlocked.

Marcus, confident in his reflexes hangs back, his ears ready at any signs of pursuit, and pricking at a subtle scrape off shoe in stone.
Initiative in Dune is popcorn style. I chose who goes first, then after their action, someone from the other side goes next, and then switching sides. Spending 2 Threat or Momentum allows that order to be kept on the same side for one extra action, but at +1 Difficulty.

So Rook goes first

A wall opens and the Rats spill forth, guns ready to fire. They seek to kill or dispatch Rook and Marcus, and kidnap Marya and Hural for ransom.

There are eight Rats.
They have an Asset (home turf) giving them +1 Difficulty against attacks on them.

Rook lunges at the nearest rat with his sharp blade slashing through the stale tunnel air.

@Qralloq are you saying it might be best to only roll when called for in this game?
Jan 25, 2024 5:01 pm
OOC:
I'm just saying that it's a delicate dance. Feel free to roll in advance if you're okay with me ignoring Momentum generated by rolls I deem unnecessary after the fact.

OOC:
These are minor characters. Drive 5, Skill 5. A Contest is an opposed roll. They roll their skill, setting the difficulty of an attack against them.

Two successes. D3 to take them out. Rook's Slow Blade reduces that to D2 but he scored three anyway. Don't think Dirty Fighting works with his blade. He spent a Momentum and gained one.
Rook stabs one of the thugs and they go down, clutching their belly.

One of them attacks back at Rook.
OOC:
Rook roll your Battle skill again for defense. Nevermind they missed.
A PC is up next

Momentum: 4
Threat: 4

Rolls

Difficulty Defense - (2d20)

(66) = 12

Attack on Rook - (2d20)

(1619) = 35

Since you didn't specify which PC, I'm going to assume that Marcus would go next, combat being his specialty.
Marcus draws his sword and rushes forth, putting himself between the Rats and the people he's been charged to protect.
OOC:
Can he activate his shield as well, or is that considered a second action?

On the dice roll, going with Duty and Battle and apply his Strategy Focus and make use of his Bold (Battle) Talent. But I couldn't figure out from the rules what effect either the Strategy Focus or Bold Talent have on combat, so I'm just going to roll dice as is. :(

Rolls

Marcus Syn: DUTY (6) BATTLE (6) - (2d20)

(215) = 17

Jan 25, 2024 11:43 pm
OOC:
The Focus gives you a critical range in the Skill roll. Normally, you get a success for rolling a 12 (drive 6 + skill 6) or lower. You get double successes on a natural 1. Having a focus increases the double successes range up to your skill level. So the 2 counts as 2 successes, and the 15 adds nothing.

Bold would allow you to reroll one die when you buy an extra d20 with 1 Threat (adding 1 die to the pool of dice the GM can add to NPC actions), and doing. "When you attempt a test using the Battle skill, and you buy additional d20s by generating Threat for the gamemaster, you may re-roll a single d20 in that dice pool."

Lastly, you have Traits, including Swordmaster. This reduces the difficulty of your action when the trait applies.

This was D0 action, I rolled poorly for Defense, so you defeat the thug and generate 2 Momentum.

A Rat attempts to counter attack, firing a conventional gun at Marcus. His personal shield defeats the attack.

Marya or Hural is up next.

Momentum: 6
Threat: 4

Rolls

Defense roll (10) - (2d20)

(1918) = 37

Thanks Qralloq! That makes things clearer, though I feel that I have more reading to do.
Jan 26, 2024 4:11 am
Hural, quick and silent, draws his long-blade and steps in to swing at one of the other Rats, letting the one on Marcus remain focused on the man with his personal shield.
OOC:
Justice/Battle roll, invoking his Long Blades focus.

Just to confirm - his Master-at-Arms talent is of no real use here, right - since these are minor characters and the quality of his long blade isn't important here?

EDIT: and to make sure I'm interpreting the roll correctly - because I invoked the focus, the 2 is a critical (2 successes), then the 7 (1 success) for a total of (3 successes)?

Hural Osaf: JUSTICE (6) BATTLE (6) - (2d20)

OOC:
Wanted to check I understand how this conflict is working.

In the "conflict overview" 1. is "Choose and asset to use in the attack". Marya doesn't have a blade in her list of three assets - I guess I'd assumed she carried one AND as one's not listed, then I guess she uses unarmed combat? Is that how you'd read the situation?

When we attack a Rat, they roll by default 2d20 against their Drive + Skill (for them all their drives and all their skills are set at 5). So one success for everything 10 or below, two if they roll a 1. When in the first attack the Rat rolls 6,6, then the difficulty level is 2 from this roll plus 1 from their "home advantage" trait to give D3?

Rook rolled 3 successes so that Rat is out.

After that, another Rat attacked Rook but got no successes. If they had, then Rook would have rolled 2d20 against their Battle Skill + whichever Drive they chose, and every success would raise the difficulty level for the Rat's attack.

Does this sound right?
