Arriving in Okamura

It has just gone noon when the Empress' party arrives at their destination; Okamura. The party consists of three samurai, each with a mandate of the Empress tucked into their packs, and a retainer for each. A pair of administrators, and a monk should the village be in need of blessing and cleansing.

They see the village as they approach, built conservatively along the river that cut the picturesque valley. At first it appears as rice fields tended by workers who stop to look at the approaching party before averting their eyes and returning to their work.

It expands into common dwellings; single building huts open to the spring sun. They were mostly deserted, except for children and those too elderly to work, as their occupants went about their daily routines.

Finally, the road turned into the village proper. From the elevation of the road, the party can see most of it in the valley basin below. A headman’s house stands at the front, with a small market for farming goods. Then a handful of more expensive houses.

A blacksmith, likely for farm tools, and an abandoned magisterial post are a short way away. The latter had likely been built in the ambition that the village would grow to something worth noting, rather than the hideaway from the world that it is.

The only thing obviously out of place is the manor house at the top of the valley edge, overlooking the town. It’s far enough away that it doesn’t cast a shadow, but close enough that it’s easy to see. It bears Crane colours, though an aura of darkness and gloom hangs over it.

A single path, on the far side of the village opposite the road, leads up to it. It doesn’t look well travelled.

Agasha Min of the dragon clan was no swordsmith, yet she was a smith, and an engineer. To examine a Kakita blade of such high esteem was a dream come true. Her thoughts had centered on that since leaving Shiro Chiyu. Every lesson in blending iron to make steel, in heating the ingot, in folding steel, every lesson she'd read in a scroll or been taught by her masters echoed in her mind. A Kakita blade of the Kami's own metal!

A chance for Agasha Min to show the equality of her own mettle. She liked that phrase and turned it about in her mind several times.

And then, the village. The blacksmith was humble, a village affair. In a heartbeat she planned a dozen improvements, to focus the heat and get metal to proper temperatures. But that's not why she was here.

She glanced at the manor, clouded in omens. "Daidoji Haru-san, Hida Shigenhide-san, could this be our destination?"

Shingenhide assays the small village and tries his best to keep his expression blank and not to let his disappointment show. If he had possession of such a mighty weapon, he doubted he would take up residence here.

He looks to the manor house and his brow furrows further, the Crane clan, of course.

Still, it will be an honor to face off against this legendary blade. Win or lose, he knows he will do his clan and his school honor and make certain the empire sees how staunch of an opponent a Crab will prove for its wielder.

"I find myself uncertain" the burly samurai answers Min. "I'm not much for hiding. But if I were I planning to hide from such as ourselves, I would pick a larger city where it would seem easier to blend in."

He pauses and looks toward the gloomy shadows surrounding the manor house and then back at the holy man accompanying them. "I do sense something...off about the place, however. Could that be an effect of the blade? Perhaps a ceremony to cleanse the spirits here would not be a bad place to start."

He states back at the others boldly, daring them to ridicule him as superstitious; he has more than enough reason to believe in paying the spirits heed given life on the borders of the empire.

The monk, an aging man of a stocky build that suggests he comes from commoners stock, going by the name of Daigo nods. He sets his jaw as he views the village, then turns to face the samurai. "There definitely is something about this place, aside the obvious, but I can't put my finger on it."

He crosses his arms, his staff leaning in the nook of his arm. The administrators and servants eye him and the samurai nervously, but don't give any comments. While the group watch, someone notices them and jogs toward the headman's house. They're likely to inform the man so a welcoming offer can be given. It's customary, after all.

"If you believe a ceremony of cleansing should be undertaken, my lord, I will do so." Daigo offers a thin lipped smile to Shigenhide. "It may take me some time, though."
Jan 1, 2024 4:06 pm
"Time I am not concerned with, if you are to perform the ceremony then I trust you to take care with the details and follow whatever steps you deem necessary for it to be successful." Shingenhide nods toward the jogger running off to alert the local official to their presence. "But first let us see what politics allows, the headman may no doubt find it presumptuous for us to perform such rites upon his land without consultation and approval."
Jan 1, 2024 5:51 pm
"I would like to oversee this ceremony," Min declares, eyes sharp on Daigo as if jealous that he might do something she should do herself.

She waited a moment and responds to Shigenhide. "That is wise. Our papers from the Empress should not be used lightly to attempt to counter the wishes of a local daimyo."

The bushi in lacquered armor listened to the deliberations underway between the Dragon and Crab. A silver strand wove through his otherwise black hair, suggesting the warrior entered his autumn years. He adjusted the grip on his ji as he remarked politely, "Hai, presenting ourselves to the commander of this town suggests prudence, Hida-san."

The man's Crane mon reflected brightly in the sun. He added thoughtfully, "The kami are beyond my understanding, Agasha-san, but would their blessing return while the offending source remains?"

She bows to Haru-san, and replies only, "As you say. Part of the cleansing ritual will be to actually cleanse the inpurity. We shall have to learn what that is, if fortune favors us." She is careful not to invoke the old Fortunes, for such would be improper.

Not long after heading into the headman’s house, the runner returns with the headman in tow. Together, they climb the steps to the road and hurry over to the party with all due haste. As they approach the group get a good look at the pair.

The runner is an unremarkable man. His short, dark hair is unwashed, and he has stubble about his chin. He’s lean from work, but otherwise nondescript. He seems below noting, and makes no effort to make eye contact or speak when they stop before the party.

The headman, on the other hand, has a few notable features. He looks to be in his early 50s. His grey hair is receding, but is fine enough to suggest a noble birth. He doesn’t look like he has the body for a worker, rather one more suited to court. He wears light, inexpensive clothes but with a rather more pricey haori.

"Greetings, noble samurai." He wrings his hands as he speaks, nervousness thick in his words. "My humblest apologies for not greeting you sooner, we have had trouble this morning and my mind was elsewhere. I cannot express my regret enough, and mean you no sleight."

He glances behind him at the village, and back at the samurai. His mouth moves as though he has more to say, but protocol forbids him from making suggestions of his betters and he says nothing.
OOC:
A Design (Void) check (TN 2) will allow you to know that the haori was likely a donation, one paid for as a bribe or downpayment.

A Sentiment (Water) check (TN 3) will allow you to know for sure that his discomfort is directed at their arrival. Sentiment (Air) (TN 3) will allow you to know that his suggestion of trouble isn’t entirely honest.

The Crane took in the headsman with a glance. The bushi did not discern anything amiss in his words, despite the impoliteness of his absence at the city gates. He held his tongue out of habit, however, to allow for the others to speak first.

It matters little to the Crab bushi how the headman acquired his haori, especially given his apparent noble birth. If anything, he's more interested that the remainder of his garb is less ostentatious, perhaps in the manner of one who puts his wealth to other uses.

Disgusted by the insincere politeness of politics, Shingenhide simply projects his own discomfort at the meeting onto the other man and assumes it must be the cause for his nervousness.

So to his eyes, the headman simply seems unexpectedly relatable for someone in his position.

He is naturally cynical regarding the cause of the troubles the man mentions but lacks the skill to read him further. He hadn't been considering their greeting late regardless, so he takes no offense.

He had really hoped not to be the spokesman for the group, but speaks after a moment when the others do not respond.

"No apologies necessary, I am certain your duties were pressing. What type of trouble did you encounter?"
Jan 9, 2024 2:49 pm
"The river." The headman pauses for a moment, as though considering what to say. "It’s been temperamental of late, and is running low. We can find the reason, and its affecting our crops. Perhaps…"

He trails off and looks at the floor, when he returns his gaze to you, though with his eyes lowered, he has a forced smile plastered on his face. He wrings his hands, which suggest nothing to the lack of food he’s alluding to.

"I wouldn’t dare to guess the mind of the kami, but I’m sure they have their reasons."
Jan 10, 2024 3:57 am
"The river, you say. We're not here to collect your lord's share of the crops. However, if there is something in the area that is interfering with the ..." she pauses and considers how much or little this man might know, before finishing, "reason we were sent, then we might look into it. Tell us or do not, but knows that we can do nothing about things you keep from us."
Jan 11, 2024 1:52 pm
The headman's eyes widen in surprise. For a moment his lips work as though forming soundless words, before eventually he swallows as though trying to keep an emotion from spilling over.

"You would assist us, my lords and ladies?" He bows his head in pre-emptive gratitude. "Then I, uh, might need a moment to collect my thoughts on the matter as best to assist you. Is there anything I can help you with beforehand? Refreshments, or an introduction to anyone?"
Jan 12, 2024 2:33 am
"Perhaps we could meet the officials who oversee the workers farming along the river?" Shingenhide suggests, directing the question more to his companions than the headman. "They could have thoughts on what recent events may have disturbed the local kami."
Jan 13, 2024 1:12 am
She nods at the Hida. She's terrible with those of low station, and has a hard time getting them to do more than the very minimum of what she orders. "Yes, let us do that."
Jan 13, 2024 2:35 pm
"Of course, of course." The headman bows respectfully before turning away to address the person he'd arrived with. "Please inform Horie-sama that I'll return to our business shortly."

Then, with a smile, he leads you toward the rice fields. At this point, the two administrators excuse themselves. They have their own orders and wish to pay a visit to the shrine first and foremost. The monk, not wanting to interfere with your duties, decides to go with them instead. The three of you are led down to the paths between the rice paddies, where the workers make a significant effort to ensure proper etiquette is followed.

As he walks, the headman speaks. "We're not as large, nor as organised, as some of the trade villages. We don't really have official overseers per say, but there are people who keep the workers in line. My son is out on duty today, but I don't see him. It's possible he's gone up river toward the source of the problem."

He waves toward a stern looking commoner standing at the edge of a field. She's on the older side, as you notice many of the people in the village are. Despite that, she looks tough and ready. She heads over, showing due formality, while the headman finishes his spoken thoughts. "Mind you, I told them all to avoid it. Bad things happen further up the river, you see. Accidents, and the like. My lords and ladies, allow me to introduce Mori-san. She's the most senior worker we have."
OOC:
A Culture (Earth) check at TN 2 would allow you to recall information about the name Horie, in relation to your current assignment.

Something about the name Horie strikes Shingenhide, though he has difficulty initially putting his finger on what...
