[Game Thread] Mall Maul!

Berto and Kline heard the conversation and spoke out, "It would be a right decision. Also, we don't want to intervene but with such nasty surprises, maybe we should all stick together so that we can save each other's hides?"

Berto's team followed the others and moved towards the Truck bay.

The group weaves their way through the minefield of toad-spider trapdoors without any further incident. The path into the truck bay slopes down, due to the way that most of the mall has sunken into the ground. A large metal mechanism attached to a bin sits in a corner at the lowest point. It looks like it is designed to crush things - a trash compactor possibly. Rotted hoses on the machine have leaked an oily fluid onto ground around it.

Stairs lead up from the bottom of the slope to the unloading platform and a pair of large bay doors open into what was once the staging area for goods to be taken into the mall. On the western wall is a metal door. Trying the door reveals that it is locked, but the whole thing is corroded and it feels loose in its frame. A good solid kick could probably break it open.
OOC:
If anyone wants to break the door down, you can do it (no roll required). Obviously, there will be some noise involved. Or you come up with other plans as you see fit. What do you do?

"Oh no, oh no, the door is locked. Let's go home, nothing to be done," Hannibal says, his trunk still shivering.

"I thought elephants had good memories," Liam growls. "We're not here by choice, remember?"

Travis pills out his Leatherman and examines the edges of the door and the lock.

"I'm pretty handy with tinkering, maybe I can pick the lock with your tool?" Sarah offers.
OOC:
If Sarah could pick the lock, let me know what kind of check to roll

OOC:
Sarah doesn't have any experience trying to pick locks, but she's seen someone do it in town once or twice. The tools she has don't seem quite right for it either. But if she wants to give it a try, she can roll a d20 and add her Luck modifier.

Also, I forgot to respond to Sarah trying to remove the toad spider venom gland. She can make an Intelligence check for that. DC 15 (because the conditions are less than ideal).

As others stood by debating what would be the right course of action, Pung irritatingly growled and looked at everyone with impatience. Noticing that no one was taking any action, he moved forward and pushed the obstacle with his staff in order to topple it down.

Doc Whiskers lends his otter strength to the door toppling while 451 and Dope Man relax in the shade of the dock.

It takes more than a push to get the door open, but not much more. A good shove from a couple of people causes the lock bolt to snap. Shockingly, the hinges hold, and the door swings open with a creak instead of loudly toppling to the floor. Lucky.

Beyond the door is a hallway leading to the west. It goes slightly down, not because it was built that way, but because the whole mall is sunken into the ground beyond the door. The light from outside illuminates the hallway enough for you to see that it hits a "T" hallway junction 20 feet or so away. You can see a door on the far wall. Things seem fairly silent, and there does not seem to be any light sources inside.

OOC:
I made a roll to see how noisey opening the door was going to be. Natural 20. You guys lucked out.

Shh. Secret - (d20)

(20) = 20

OOC: I don't think my party has a torch. Does anyone have a torch?
Feb 26, 2024 4:39 am
OOC:
No, no torch :-( Didn't even think about needing light sources.
Liam: "Dammit, it's darker than my sense of humor in there." He heads back to the bay and searches through the trash compactor for some way of making a torch.
OOC:
He'll look for any kind of stick or rod, wrap it in rags or glue (with Sarah's superglue) any suitable material to the rod, then check whether the oily stuff is flammable. If so, he'll soak the material in the oily stuff, then make a small pile of shavings of firestarter logs, light that for a small flame then light the torch for a bigger flame.

If all that works, he'll lead the way down the hallway holding the torch in his left hand for better light, billy club in his right hand as a weapon.

The others will each be weilding their weapons (Hannibal holding his book, Travis his crook staff, and Sarah her scalpel) as well in case something jumps out at them.

Once we get a look both ways down the hall we can decide where to go next.

"Hey Scruffette, give him some rags," Rowana growls. The janitor complies, offering some rags to Liam. Rowana then pours some of the lighter fluid from her bottle onto the rags. "There you go! A torch by any other name!"

Doc Whiskers takes out his hand crank flashlight and 451 snaps a glow stick to illuminate the darkness. They move with the others to examine the intersection and listen at the door...
Feb 26, 2024 11:14 pm
The now illuminated crew packs into the hallway, moving far enough for the front-most members to peer down the hallway at the intersection. The hallway extends about 50 feet in either direction, with two doors across from the group. Both doors have worn lettering on them in a simple style. The northern of the two doors says "Which Watch". The southern of the two says "RadioShed".

In the distant gloom of the lights, you can see that the south end of the hallway turns west and the north end turns east. Also in the shadows to the north, you can make out another door. The floors look dusty and not recently disturbed. The only sound other than those coming from the party is a very faint rhythmic beat of some kind coming from the north.

OOC:
You folks should probably establish a rough marching order. These are wide hallways - four people can proceed shoulder-to-shoulder if you like. Alternatively, we can ignore marching order, and I'll just randomize who's up front if it matters.

So which way now?

Kline observed everyone's resourcefulness and tried to make a torch for his party. Once, that is achieved, the group follows the other group inside the mall, and under the light of several torches, they notice the two entrances. Pung looks at both entrances but moves to the Southern one, the label of RadioShed looming over them.

Kline, Berto and Carlos follow behind Pung waiting to see what's in the room.

OOC: Pung in the front, rest in the back.

Callie and Rowana are in front, while Scruffette hangs back with her sling at the ready, and Brie pushes the shopping cart along.
Feb 27, 2024 5:14 pm
Doc, Dope Man and 451 all move to the South Eastern door and check to see if it is locked. If not, they open it and peer inside with Doc's flashlight...

Liam and Sarah take the lead, and are ready to enter the RadioShed when it's possible.

Hannibal and Travis follow behind, keeping an eye on the other doors.
