So the target is 13 (=6+7). Rolling 13 or lower generates 1 success. If you have an applicable focus, such as Battle (long Blades) then rolling the skill rank (in this case 6 for Battle) or less, results in two successes.

So the 8 and the 1 are both less than or equal 13 so generate one success each. The 1 is also less than or equal to your Battle rank so would count double if there is an applicable focus. Since you have the focus Battle (long Blades), the 1 does indeed generate an extra.

So the 8 generates one success, the 1 generates two, for a total of 3.

The thug defended (combat are opposed rolls) and rolled two successes, reducing the three to one success. One is enough to defeat them.

The Quality of an Asset reduces the difficulty of actions using the Asset. For a Mook, that's no effect, as they're Difficulty 1 so one hit and out. However, named characters will have a higher difficulty.
