Civilization is at its end. Slowly but steadily, the universe contracts towards an inescapable end. The void between the stars whispers strange and portentous phrases to the unlucky. This is a game about the blue-collar explorers and hard-working laborers in this universe, and the jobs they take to survive in a war-torn stellar system where anarchy spreads and resources are scarce. Without a good aim, and a tech-savvy mind, they will quickly meet their Death in Space.

The End of the Universe

The vast blackness of space is collapsing, in a slow grind towards eternal nothingness. Heralding the collapse is the void, a strange presence that infects and corrupts. So say the navvies, workers who travel farther into uncharted space than anyone else, as they return with stories from faraway systems. Scientists of course reject such claims, calling them tales and nightmares. Yet, even among them, there are some who assert that the universe has stopped expanding. Instead, they say, it is now compressing, at an accelerating rate towards an inevitable crushing crunch.

The war ended a decade ago. And although one of the corporations declared itself victor in the end, all lost. The production of spacecraft, advanced weapons and other technology has since stopped. As a result, everything is now recycled and repurposed over and over again. Whittled down, bit by bit. Nothing is new. Among the unlucky ones trapped in the Tenebris system, there are many that still remember the war. Some grievances are hard to forget.

Game System: We are playing Death in Space, a low-tech sci-fi space exploration setting, also affectionately known as Mork Borg in Space. Similar to other grimdark Borg games, it is rules-like and OSR-inspired. Gritty and realist, the opposite of Traveller and Coriolis and Stars Without Number; some similarities with Alien and Mothership except it's not the aliens that get to you, it's the Void.

Themes: survival, silence, isolation, decay, post-war, desperation, dystopia. The world is old and the mood is dark, both in the literal and figurative senses.

Character Creation: I am looking for 4-6 players, that number is about right for the various roles in a space vehicle. The core book provides various character options, and a particularly enjoyable feature is that it invites players to co-create a spacecraft or spacestation hub together as their starting point. Various tables allow randomisation of traits and backgrounds.

Game Duration and Post Frequency: I'd like to play through the introductory adventure in the core book. From there the space exploration segment embarks, so minimally a proper experience of the game takes us through both. We should be able to manage 1 post a day to 1 post every 2 days, but that entirely depends on what the players can reasonably commit to.

Specialised Resources: I ask that you also join a Discord channel for chat purposes; I have found it to add well to the PbP experience here. Other than that, everything else will be on Gamers Plane.

Player Experience: None needed.

GM Experience: I've just completed Mork Borg and Cy_Borg here, amongst other games (and Pirate Borg might be next). So Death in Space is a continuation of this theme. I'm also a forever GM (and a committed player) across many games and systems. I tend towards detailed setting creation with multiple plots and options in a sandbox, but will behave myself for the introductory part of this adventure at least. :)

How to Apply: Here!

Welcome All: This game is explicitly welcomes friends from all groups.

I'm definitely curious about this, but with the new games I have recently started, I'm fairly stretched already. Definitely prioritize other applicants, but if you end up having a free spot, I'd like to give this a shot.

This sounds awesome! I’ve never played this system before, but have played Star Wars EOE and GMed Star Wars D20 before. That’s just to let you know that I have messed around with space travel mechanics in other systems.

I play DND 5e in several settings, including here on GP. That said, I’m pretty new to GP and PbP in general. I’m good for any posting rate (1+ per day is fine). And I’m on discord with other groups all the time, so happy to use it.

I have the book and it speaks to stuff I love i.e. gritty science fiction horror, rules-light. One of the games I've been in just ended, making it easier to have capacity for a post a day/every second day. Would be excited to play this with y'all! Happy to join a Discord channel as you describe.

If BeardHare is playing, I’d be willing to trade a kidney to get in ;)

Popping the discord channel invite here, in case we want to shoot the breeze about this game.

Thunder Lungz, when you mentioned Star Wars it struck me that the setting will feel somewhat Outer Rim, lawless, derelict, etc, but no oppressive Empire, the opposite of the Force, with nothing overarching. Space mechanics rules are also very light-handed, as befitting OSR-type games. Beardhare, the horror is definitely the all-encroaching emptiness ...

This sounds awesome! Discord incoming…

I've never played Death in Space (or any Borg game for that matter), but I have a fair amount of experience with gritty, OSR-inspired systems. If you have room for me, I'd be happy to pick up a copy.

After thinking a bit more about it, I think I'll have to retract my application here. I don't think I could take this game on at the moment. But have fun with it, and I definitely want to get a chance to play in a game you run at some point, BZ!

This sounds like a good cross for me. I haven't played Mork Borg but ive tried a couple other OSR one shots or short campaigns in fantasy settings so I can dig that vibe. Add my current Sci-Fi kick right now and this sounds pretty good. I'll jump in the discord.

We have to, either direction, me in one of yours, or vice versa!

And it's looking like we're shaping up to 5 or 6 players! Will leave this thread open for another day or two, then I'll send invites.

Thank you so much for your enthusiasm here and over on discord chat, we're at a solid six players, so I'll be sending out invites. Can't wait!
