Hannah sighs and says, "I think the problem is the transmission. What do you think?". She moves to help Holroyd.
OOC:
Hannah will help, since it makes sense she would know a little about the vehicle. The way she acted before was her emotions getting the best of her.

OOC:
In that case @C1NDER/Holryd, you've got the maximum three dice you can get from helpers here (Sigg, Hirsch, Singleton) so you can make your roll now with Heavy Machinary with a -2 to the total number of dice as its Hard and +3 for the three helpers.
Jan 27, 2024 12:41 am
With the help of the others, Holroyd pulls one of the exterior panels of the tractor free and starts exploring its insides, looking first for the cause of the failure, then the solution.
OOC:
With three dice helping, that's 11d6.

Rolls

Mechanical Repair - (11d6)

Working together you are able to get the tractor up and running again!

The engine doesn't sound great - you expect it needs a proper strip-down and maintenance before it becomes reliable again, and you aren't sure how long it'll keep running. You have the feeling there are some fundamental problems with it that you can't fix quickly, and certainly not out here and in these conditions.
OOC:
In Alien RPG your roll is a success when you roll at least one 6, unless you also rolled a 1 on a stress die and the resulting panic roll tells you that any success rolled is negated.

If you roll more than one 6, you can use any additional 6s to invoke a "stunt" - some additional extra positive thing that happens when you carry out the action.

Different skills have different stunts - this post in the "How to play Alien RPG" thread gives you info on them.

Here are the relevant stunts for HEAVY MACHINERY:
- +1 to a later related roll
- Don’t need to roll again for this exact situation
- Half the usual time
- Break it permanently
- You act quietly
- You show off

When you roll more than one success, in the future you can go ahead and edit your post to let us know which stunts you'd like to take.

For you this time, @C1NDER, you can choose three stunts, as you rolled four 6s (the first 6 grants you the initial success, the additional three 6s can be used for stunts.

Hannah turns the key a throttles the engine. It gives a chocked cough and turns over.

"Holroyd actually got this piece of junk running!", she thinks and then says, "Good work, Holroyd. It sounds like it's on its last legs, but it's running. Don't think it will make it to the processor. If this thing kicks the bucket out there we are really in trouble. Alright, everyone get in!",
Jan 27, 2024 3:19 pm
OOC:
I'll wait a day or so before I post, to see if anyone wants to do something other than get on board the tractor and head to Hadley's Hope main base.
Jan 27, 2024 5:56 pm
Janice jumps back into the tractor. He demeanor instantly changed for the better. It's as if a weight has been lifted. Thank God! I wasn't looking forward to walking back to base.

She slaps Singleton on the shoulder in approval. Agreed. Get us back to base. We can always head out again once it's been fully repaired.

Sonny climbs in and sits down next to Hirsch.
‘Nice work, Holroyd. You have my vote for MVP.’ Sonny concedes. He silently glares at MacWhirr- of course she’d never give praise to an employee. He sincerely hoped some day his education would help him rise above the string of amateurish managers/bosses he’s had during his entire adult life.

‘Hey, Hirsch?’ he says. You’ve been around the block a time or two… ‘Ever seen crazy like this before?’

Morgan taps out his cigar on the bottom of his boot, but the stink of it clings to him. He clenches the slightly shorter cigar between his teeth as he climbs back aboard the tractor and takes a seat.

Sonny climbs in a sits beside him. Morgan thinks for a minute when Sonny asks his question. Yeah, he's seen some shit. But does he want to scare this group with the things that made him go AWOL? Probably not smart. Everyone's already on edge. If it was just Mac and Singleton, he might go for the fear factor, but he doesn't want to make Sonny worried.

"Yeah, I've seen some things. Usually it's just people overreacting." He looks away from Sonny, not wanting the kid to catch the fact that he's hiding the truth. "Probably communications or some system went down and somebody got their panties all in a bunch. Now everyone's in a panic."

It's more than that, he thinks to himself, fingering the power switch on his cutting torch. It's not a M41 Pulse Rifle, but it's what he's what he's got, and God willing, it's enough. Something's wrong back at the base, he can feel it.

"Just stick with me," he says to Sonny. "People get antsy when they're scared. They'll probably do something stupid."
Jan 27, 2024 6:52 pm
Sonny relaxes a bit after talking to Hirsch. He pets Jenny and does his best to keep the cat calm on the bumpy ride. ‘Thanks man.’ he says.
‘S’always good to know someone’ll shoot straight with you in the midst of this corporate outhouse.’
The young man smiles at the older one, clearly showing his gratitude.

Holroyd takes the thanks with a quiet smile. As they discuss their next steps, he add his own voice to the mix."Getting back to base..." Holroyd says, "That is best, I think. Yes. I'm confident I can keep the tractor running until then. I worry for the others. Something seems very wrong." He looks to Hirsch, passing a calm glance to the man. "Hirsch is probably right. It may be nothing. I would recommend caution when we get back, however. It wouldn't hurt."

Holroyd sits back and watches out the window of the tractor as the wind whips the dust and debris into a frenzy outside.
OOC:
Stunts:
- Don’t need to roll again for this exact situation
- Half the usual time
- +1 to a later related roll

Hannah smiles at Janice's compliment.

"Alright, next stop home.", Janice says and throws the tractor in gear.

OOC:
@C1NDER I've been reading around the use of the "Don't need to roll again for this exact situation" stunt - where there is a risk, if it is interpreted very liberally, that it could become kinda OP. So my ruling on it is that you'll be able to get this particular tractor up-and-running again, if it breaks, in the same kind of time it took you to do it this time. I'm going to rule that as 15 minutes. So if you got in it again, and it broke down, that's how long you'd need to get it working again.

And the +1 to a later related roll will come into play if you wanted to do something related to fiddling around with this tractor e.g. to pimp it, to install something in it, to re-wire it to go faster, something like that.

Next time I offer stunts, I want to try and remember to describe in that kind of detail, before you pick them, what the stunt will look like in this particular context. But we might also find that takes me too much time to do each time. We'll figure it out as we go on.

It's heavy going moving over the surface of LV-426, or Acheron as the colonists now call it. Rocks frequently crumble, rubble and rocks being pushed around by the frequent severe storms, making it pointless to maintain paths or tracks between locations. Because of this, while faster and safer and more comfortable than walking, the tractor isn't fast - managing a speed something like 5-10 km/hr.

The ride back is uneventful. You make several repeated attempts to re-establish audio contact with the colony, but apart from a single garbled panicked transmission, you hear nothing further from them.

It's not pretty - but still, it is a relief when you are able to make out the shape of Hadley's Hope in front of you through the rain and the low cloud.

You bring the tractor through into the nearest entrance, the West Airlock. This lock is away from the main body of the base, and the door is big enough for you to drive the tractor inside. Vehicles can be serviced here away from the constant storm.
OOC:
You can see where this is on the plans on this plan of the colony on the Level 1 Ground Level image. Confusingly, this image lists a West Lock and a "Hadley's Hope Last Day Starting Location" - it is this second one, the one labeled starting location, that you have arrived at.
As you get out of the tractor - very glad to be out of it, after having been cooped up for so long - you hear a distant voice talking over the intercom. It’s obscured by static but you can make out the following:

"This is an emergency message. All colonists must immediately assemble at the main storeroom on the sub-level for safety."

After several repeats, the message cuts off with an electronic screech.
Jan 29, 2024 7:59 pm
Janice climbs out of the tractor and stretches, trying to crack her back and relieve the ache that has settled in. Ugh. I'm getting to old for this.

She hears the recorded message and thinks aloud What the hell. What are those pricks up to now. The message cuts off and Janice looks over to Singleton. We need to get down there and find out what's going on. Who knows what the suits are telling people what to do.

Then to herself I knew I should have stayed back from this trip. Every time someone comes from corporate, it's more work for all of us. Dammit!
Jan 29, 2024 8:14 pm
Inside the service structure around the West Lock, now that the message has stopped being repeated from the intercom, there’s no noise except the soft hum of the colony air circulation and heating systems - and the squeal of the wind outside. This ready room is big, with metal benches and mesh-framed lockers. The lighting here is always dim - and today is no exception. The place has a dusty and disused smell about it. There is a horizontal sliding door - currently closed - that would open into the colony proper. The intercom station is by the door.

There is also an elevator here which leads downwards into the three sub-levels. The main storeroom referred to in the message is on sub-level 1.
OOC:
The "main storeroom" refers to the part of the map labelled "Mass Housing & Offices" - more specifically, the space with tables and lockers and seating in the southern part of that block.
Jan 30, 2024 12:21 am
Janice heads over to the intercom station and punches in the code for the command center. Command center, come in. Command center, come in. This is office Macwhirr. Me and my crew just got back from our trek out to Processor 9. The tractor died half way and we finally made it back. She pulls her finger from the transmit button and adds No thanks to any of you

Janice continues without waiting for a response We just heard the transmission about the assembly in the main storeroom. Can someone please explain what the hell is going on? Corporate shouldn't be meeting with union workers without their rep present.

Janice waits for a response, her blood slowly burning. I'm going to rip someone a new one. I don't give a crap who they are. You can't bypass protocol. I should have been advised of this meeting. She mashes the transmit button Command Center, come in! ... Fuck this.
I'm heading downstairs. Let me know if anyone decides to respond.
with that, Janice opens the door and heads to the elevator.
Jan 30, 2024 1:07 am
"I'll come with you," Holroyd says quickly. He looks to the others. "We should all go. Until we know the nature of the emergency, it would be best we follow the instructions as indicated." He approaches the elevator and presses the button to summon it.
Jan 30, 2024 1:16 am
"Wait, Janice! Something isn't right. Normally those messages play for @#$^* ever. Why would it just cut off?", Hannah says following Janice to the elevator.

"Think about it! Even if Corporate tries to pull a fast one, this isn't how they do it. $%#@", she adds as she catches up with Janice.

"They normally sit you down one by one and then $#@^ you over.", she thinks.
OOC:
Hannah is going but she is just protesting before commiting to it.

Morgan has a feeling, and it looks he's not the only one. He hangs back as MacWhirr heads toward the elevator, then offers his opinion.

"Singleton's right, something's off about this," The panicked messages were one thing. People got antsy. The corporate types making everybody go to one spot... there's no way that's safer.

He follows MacWhirr, but hangs back a bit, tugging Sonny by the arm to stick with him. He looks around for something for Sonny to pickup, anything that might be a weapon. They probably don't need it, but better safe than sorry. Even a length of pipe or a big wrench would be better than nothing. He's got his torch, not that he'd want to threaten anyone with it. But still, he doesn't set it down in the vehicle bay. He checks the straps, makes sure it's secure.

"Hey, Kid," he says quietly to Sonny. "If people are panicked, they might come at us, try to hurt us, or even just hurt us by accident. See if you can find something to defend yourself. Even a length of pipe will be better than nothing. Something you can use to shove them off, swing to keep them at bay."

He's keeping his eye on Mac, Singleton, and Holroyd.
