4. The Jarvey Farm

Jan 26, 2024 2:36 am
The group makes their way out of Blackwater Creek heading east, the sun hanging low in the sky elongating their shadows on the road. In a short while, the mobsters find a dirt track departing to the north which they take. As they walk down the corn hemmed path, they are amazed at how tall the corn is. At parts it stands nearly twelve feet tall and hangs over laden with bulbous gargantuan ears of corn.

The hum of insects is electric, the constant tick-tick bzzzzzz ringing in everyone's ears. After walking a quarter mile or so through the looming stands of corn, a path opens to the right while the path continues forward. The group takes the right path to the Jarvey farm as the sun passes out of sight beyond the forest and corn to the west. As they walk the path, the corn gives way to a wheat field that spans an acre or two.

Coming out of the wheat, the party enters into a farmyard that is bordered by several buildings. A woman sits in a rocking chair on the farmhouse porch across the way, smoking a pipe. The dimming light prevents seeing her clearly. When she spots the party she calls back through the window. Malcom! We've guests a come calling. A man quickly comes into view, backlit by the lamps of the farmhouse clearly holding a shotgun. He glances at the group and then, almost sheepishly, quickly stows the shotgun behind the door and comes out onto the porch, leaning on the railing. His bright smile can be seen in the dim light as he calls. Ho there, friends. How can we be helpin you?

Jimmy pats Manny on the back, harder than necessary, "Hey there Manny, my friend, why don't you go on and introduce us? You've got a way o' talkin' that might actually get a roof over our heads tonight. Though yous better talk clear or they might have you muckin' around with the other piggies." Manny knows Jimmy enough to know there ain't much friendliness in the jibe, just Jimmy bein' Jimmy.

Manny waddles out ahead of the group a big obsequious smile on his face.

Hiya Sir … M’aam! Mr. Sproutson back in town, said we might be able to find some accommodation for the night. We had a bit of car trouble, and seem to find ourselves stuck. It would only be for a couple of days tops. We have money. He adds to finish.

He stands off the porch waiting for an invitation, wary of the man’s shotgun.

Malcolm and Edith Jarvey

Malcom stands and grips his overalls. Well sure, sure! Come on in boys! Adelaide’s just settin the table an the more the merrier! Edith stands from her rocking chair then winces and rubs her cheek. She walks over to the railing and injects a sober business tone competing with Malcom’s warm manner. We’ve only the one room which two of you could share. The other two’ll have to make do in the hay barn. I charge 75 cents a day for the room and 25 cents for the hay barn. Meals’re provided, of course. Malcolm interjects excitedly, An Ole Pete could have a look at yer car. He’s a bit of a whiz at engines.
Jan 29, 2024 3:25 am
Food included you say? Boy I got an appetite worked up.

He clambers up the steps and sets down his suitcase.

He pats his pockets and finds his wallet and produces a crisp dollar bill.

M’aam he adds as he hands the money over to Edith.
Jan 29, 2024 6:46 am
Jimmy follows Manny and offers his hand in greeting to Malcolm, nodding politely to Edith. "Thank you both for yer hospitality. Where might we find Pete? I'd like to chat about gettin' the car over here."
Jan 29, 2024 2:54 pm
Lenny Considers offering to drive the car over but remembers not only that he can't but that it's probably not a good idea even if he could drive it.

Edith squirrels the dollar away into her apron as she offers a a tight smile lined with pain to Manny and then makes her way inside rubbing her jaw. Pete should be in fer supper in just a minute. Malcolm walks over to a small triangle hanging on the porch railing. He raises it and hits the triangle with a hammer making a dinner bell sound.

Inside, through a short hallway, the group comes to a large dining room with an open kitchen to one side. A large rough hewn table and benches of obvious home make sits beneath a couple of small electric lights. A pretty country lass is setting food about the table. There are some roasted ducks, parsnip and celery soup, large ears of corn, a potato salad and a crusty bread. On a buffet to the left is a large bouquet of interesting looking flowers.

The country lass looks up and smiles shyly before lowering her gaze. Edith takes a seat at one side of the long table and Adelaide sits next to her mother, while Malcom pats Manny on the back. Please sit where you li…

A gruff looking man in a plaid shirt and overalls pushes past the group and walks directly to the back corner of the table sitting down and lifting a cup he brought with him and loosing a giant wad into the cup. Malcolm looks at the man with annoyance. Pete, these men might have need of yer help with their car…

The man looks up through low hanging grey brows. His eyes are slightly red rimmed. Pete gives a Mmmhmmm… in response.

"Car troubles," Jimmy says, "we hear you're the man to see about that."
Jan 30, 2024 1:22 am
Manny smiles at the beautiful young woman.

Emmanuel Ziegler, Esquire. he says by way of introduction, losing no time in sitting down to her right on the bench.

And you must be Adelaide? Such a pretty name. He sets his briefcase down and begins to help himself to the abundant spread.

Ms. Edith, this here looks amazing!

'I like Pete' Lenny thinks finally deciding it's Ok to relax hired muscle shouldn't be needed here.

Lenny grabs the leg of the duck, he doesn't think much of the other food, but then again he's always been a meat guy, duck chicken roast beef, sure he'll eat other food when it suits hin, it's probably respectful to at least take a cob of corn.

As Pete walks in Lenny smiles, he likes this guy, he clearly has some good reason to tolerate Malcolm probably brothers, he understands why Pete Would tolerate Malcolm if they we're brothers.

"Can Help Pete." Lenny Says, "Take to Car?"

He's a little worried about leaving Mickey alone but he can't imagine they'll be a big fight at the Jarvey's Farm.

Mickey nods approvingly to Lenny; "Good idea." he says plainly and resumed downing his celery soup which he found surprisingly aromatic.
"Air's clearer, food tastes better..." Mickey thought and sighed mentally. "If I ever get to retirement, this is what I want - getting as far away from everything as possible. Perhaps Lulu would find it nice- fuck's sake! She's your brother's broad, forget about 'er!"
He nibbled some potato salad and turned to their hostess;
"Say Mrs Edith, you got guests frequently around here?"

Old Pete

Pete looks from Jimmy to Lenny and then to Mickey, chewing slowly, before he nods his head yes. What exactly he is nodding to isn’t exactly clear. He punctuates his nod by raising his cup, loosing another fat wad of black spittle into the cup and resuming his meal.
Adelaide Jarvey

Adelaide smiles politely at Manny as she settles in to her meal. As Mickey turns to talk to Edith, he finds Adelaide staring at him. Her eyes carry a curiosity and glint of mischief. As soon as Mickey looks her direction, she grins widely and looks down at her plate continuing to eat.

Edith smiled at Manny and Mickey as she awkwardly ate out of one side of her mouth. This years harvest has been THE best in all my years. Up until this year, we haven’t had many visitors out this way. A traveling salesman every so often… but as luck would have it, we put up some University folks not too long ago. What was the lead professor’s name? Edith asks her husband. Rhoades. Professor Henry Rhoades. Malcom answers.

The food is absolutely delicious. The vegetables are flavorful, the meat is juicy and satisfying. There is something just so filling and wonderful about a country home cooked meal that you all seem to have missed living in the city.
Feb 2, 2024 11:18 pm
"Curious," Jimmy says with a look at Edith and Malcolm, "How long ago were this University folk in town? They still around somewheres?"

Last we saw them was in June or early July by my reckoning. Edith replies. She pauses, putting her utensils down and rubbing her cheek. They were with us for mebbe a month or two.
Mickey feels something press against his leg.

"I see," Jimmy says. "What were they here studying? That's a long time to be away from their classrooms."

Edith asks her husband What was it they were looking fer? Malcom purses his lips in thought and then responds Something about the history of the Valley… the professor said he thought he found something about a settlement here a long time ago… something to do with Indians and… Well I can’t rightly say what else.

Manny smiles after finishing his meal and pats his rotund torso. Ms Edith, that was some geshmack fress

He fishes out his cigarette case and offers the hosts one before lighting up.

Well Jimmy, students were probably studying over their break.

He puffs his cigarette and thinks about Professor Rhoades and the history of the Valley and the classes he took at Harvard back in Boston.

he's a good man.

Lenny thinks back, looking about, could it be that somehow they were related, the valley and their mission?

"seventy six percent." he mutters after finishing calculations.

"do you know place they studied?"
